Psychedelic Soul. Great album to start this musical journey. Great songs with outstanding production. The vocals, drums, bass, piano, horn inflections! It feels like you are sitting in the room with the musicians. Definitely has a vibe to the album- Black America runs throughout. The interludes and song themes and album title definitely tell a story and it flows together so effortlessly. Elements of Badu, Beyonce, Withers, Gil Scott-Heron, The Roots, and more, yet uniquely Solange and fresh sounding at the same time. Too many highlights to name, nothing about this album I did not like.
Good album. Undeniable voice. Fresh sounding music with an old school vibe. It is a little rough around the edges in some spots, but the artist was rough all over. Fun listen. We know what happens when she gets a polished production... this one is on the cusp. Some great music. Loved Fuck Me Pumps, In My Bed and Take the Box. The two "hidden tracks" after the outro were nice as well. The album and sound definitely bring me back to the early 2000s - a nice musical time capsule. The voice maybe gone and gone too soon, but it will always be remembered as soon as you hear it.
Quintessential Lou Reed. Such a fantastic record. He pioneered a sound and this is it- New York Punk/Hippie Rock & Roll. Nothing too fancy but revolutionary and timeless in its simplicity and sound. Can't go wrong putting on any Lou Reed record. This one brings the goods, with such classics throughout. Starting with Vicious, throw in Walk on the Wild Side, Perfect Day, Satellite of Love and Wagon Wheel and you got yourself a 5 star album.
Avant-garde rock music. Love David Byrne and Talking Heads & Fear of Music is an example of why I love them. Nothing or nobody really sounds like them. They are a band where you pick up something new and exciting with the 1st listen as well as the 100th. This album is a feeding frenzy for "modern day" jambands, with Cities, Life During Wartime and Heaven often covered by an array of bands. Great album from a unique and truly amazing band. Besides the aforementioned tunes, I Zimbra, Air and Paper are standout songs on an album full of bangers.
Pacific Northwest Grunge. Love the sounds and emotions of this album. So many of Alice in Chains classics come off of this record. My favorite song by them, Down in a Hole, along with Rooster, Angry Chair and the title track Dirt. I have definitely given more time to the acoustic versions of these from the fantastic MTV Unplugged, which is a bit more up my alley. Nonetheless, it is great to play this one loud in all of its grungy glory. RIP Layne! I am sure there could've been so much more great music if you were still with this world.
English Punk. Never heard anything from this album before this listen. Album had great flow and intense energy. Two tracks that stood out were the opening Frightened and the final track Music Scene. Would be a good album to have knowledge of in certain settings... settings that I often don't find myself in.
80s Girl Power Pop. And it is awesome! Just a killer album with banger after banger. Loved this from start to finish. Such a fun listen.
Love The Kinks!! Such an underrated band. Every album of theirs is fantastic as far as I am concerned. This classic from the late 60s is no exception. Just great songs and music that flow together telling the story of Arthur and the life around him. Great stuff. Need to add this one to my ever growing Kinks vinyl collection.
This album demonstrates the limitless powers and talents of Prince. It has a little bit o' everything - Politics, funk, jazz, psychedelics, soul, rock & roll, and of course, sex. A true masterpiece.
An ethereal listening experience. Beautiful album with amazing compositions, arrangements, lyrics and production. Kate Bush was a trailblazer for the female artist (I remember after first listening to this album thinking Tori Amos owes Kate Bush for her sound). Love how this album basically plays as two separate musical suites, with Side A as the mesmerizing Hounds of Love and Side B as the haunting The Ninth Wave. Fantastic artistry and a truly great album.
Enjoyable album. Celtic folk-rock. The horns and strings throughout add a lot to the compositions. Come on Eileen and the cover of Van Morrison's Jackie Wilson were the only two songs I was familiar with, but not a clunker on the entire album.
Iconic voice. I do love Morrissey and The Smiths. This album is great. Certain People I Know is going to end up on a playlist. Will definitely be revisiting the album again as it full of great guitars and songs.
The 90s had such a wealth of great rock albums. This album is full of quality 90s soundscapes. A mix of glam, grunge, pop and rock, all blended superbly into a cohesive album. With a band made up of an amazing producer and killer vocalist, no wonder it is a slick and polished piece of art.
Revisiting a stone cold classic. What can you say about Highway 61 Revisited that hasn't already been said? It is one of the all-time great American albums from perhaps the best to ever write songs. Over the years, different songs have become favorites or hit differently because there is just so much to take in from these amazing songs and music and to process and interpret them along the stages of life. This album should be required listening in high school English classes. 5 out of 5 from Mr. Zimmerman.
Trippy Euro hip-hopish rock? A genre I do not have a lot of experience with. I enjoyed the album, but nothing really jumped out at me. Good for background music. I liked the more ambient grooves in Pumpkin, Overcome and Abbaon Fat Tracks (fuuny tune).
Solid 70s hard rock. They get called the American Zeppelin and this album is a good example of why... however I would much rather listen to any Zeppelin album. Solid guitar work, vocals and songs, just nothing too special in my opinion.
Hauntingly beautiful and somber listen. Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
Like a moody ambient dream. Moving flawlessly in and out of sleepy rock through lackadaisical Americana. This is an amazing album full of stellar tracks. Stoner gold.
Thick, gooey bass grooves. A fantastic and fun listen. The foot never comes of the gas pedal. Sick collaborations and just silky funky, soulful, jazzy sounds from beginning to end.
Great folk rock. Great songs. Everything is great about this album which I have loved for quite some time now. Always enjoyable and an enduring piece of art from Linda and Richard. Stands the test of time.
