Loved ‘The Gift’
Loud clashing guitars not for me, too chaotic and overstimulating, I lose concentration and it just sounds like noise to me.
Everyone was right. Was sure I wouldn’t like Joni Mitchell’s music that much, folk is not really my genre, but it really is beautiful. ‘River’ made me cry. ‘California’ ‘All I want’ really great. Amazing album.
Couldn’t finish it. Not the type of music I can listen to for very long at all. Really don’t like Big Band/Swing type stuff. If it had lyrics I might have been able to sort of distract myself from the sounds and stay locked in and keep listening maybe?? I tried!
I liked this one!
I skipped the ones I already knew I really liked ‘The Song Is Over’, never heard that one before. It took me to the deluxe version and I didn’t listen to the repeats and live versions which I think is fair.
Pretty good! Haven’t listened to ‘Wake Up’ in years and was surprised that I was kind of over it by the end considering how much I loved it back in the day. Love a full orchestra/band, band.
Fun! Listening to a whole album really puts what I wrongly considered to be just gimmicky songs (Our Lips are Sealed, We Got The Beat) into context. A good morning walk album.
Fucking great album! Nostalgic and also surprising - not really any bad songs a few I hadn’t heard that were as good as the popular ones. Amazing voice it’s hard to believe they haven’t held onto the amount of success they had with this album.
Has my favourite Radiohead song on it. I can’t tell if I’ve heard more songs from this one than I thought or they’re kind of just the same 2 different vibes (lyrical melody composition(?), song/verse structure) over and over. But that’s just having an intentional musical style I guess? Either way there are only 2 of 11 songs I’m not really into - My Iron Lung and Just. Great album.
Never heard any of these songs before. Pretty corny sounding style of yacht rock/jazz rock but interesting lyrics and subjects. It was fine background music and catchy at times, not hard to listen to but easy to tune out of, for me. Nothing made it onto the playlist and I wouldn’t revisit it.
A good one! Always really liked “Into The Mystic”and am surprised I didn’t come to love any of the other ones on this album as much, I thought I would be more into this than I was. Still so great to hear an actual band playing music with much less digital input.
Really liked this one! Always hated ‘Blister in the Sun’ (still don’t like it) and always liked ‘Please Do Not Go’ and found that I really liked every other song. It felt nostalgic in a weird way like I had actually listened to the whole album from beginning to end like this at some point.
Wow! I had no idea this would be as enjoyable as it is. I skipped Cherish. Really interesting religious and family themes, pretty sad at times. Loved the bookending of Like A Prayer and Act of Contrition.
This was fine. I didn’t have any strong feelings about it either way and didn’t feel engaged with it at all (maybe bc It’s been a long work week?). It wasn’t bad and I was surprised i didn’t like any of the ones I hadn’t heard as much as Feel Alright. I wouldn’t turn it off if it came on but I probably wouldn’t choose to listen to it.
Really great! Super engaging, way easier to listen to than I thought it would be considering the musical style and overall length. They’re all very interesting songs this is another one I’m very late to!
I enjoyed this! I’ve never dedicated time to properly listening to jazz I’ve always thought I should try but never really have and i’m so happy I liked it. Sarah Vaughan is SO charming I loved all her unpolished unserious moments. It doesn’t lose anything from being a live album, it adds to it, the vibe is relaxed and warm. Really appreciate getting this one as my first real listen to jazz.
Listened to most of it, definitely not for me. A mix of meandering orchestral prog pop/rock and sea shanties? I appreciate its uniqueness and The Exorcist thing is sort of fun I guess.
Nothing really interesting to me. Tangerine was alright but I wouldn’t listen again. Also knowing when he sang about “girl/little girl” knowing that that’s probably exactly what he meant bc of how he was carrying on back then (still?) is fucking gross.
Not for me. Scrubbed through the last 10min song bc there was just no way. Still not into big band type music, and this one was also corny and boring. Kind of interesting lyrics/themes to some of the songs.
This was alright. Definitely got bored by the end of it and skipped through the final instrumental but stayed engaged with it pretty much the whole time. Interesting, sad/disturbing themes and lyrics in it, genuinely hope whoever this is about got away from this dude (permanently) he seemed like a dangerous arsehole/incel. I liked the musical style itself.
It’s christmas and this is a christmas album.
Really great! So good. Very touching hearing his age in his voice, not diminishing anything at all only adding to it. Really liked it.
This is so great! I loved this album when I bought the CD in high school and I still think it’s awesome. Definitely too long though I just skimmed through the lyrics of the interludes rather than listen to them and i skipped all the radio-popular songs I’ve heard a thousand times before (Hey Ya, Roses, ILTWYM etc). Speakerboxxx is my favourite of the two and both are so creative and fun and really interesting and easy to listen to.
I like Britpop and this was completely forgettable, as a record and a band. It’s 10 minutes after I finished listening and it made absolutely no impression at all I don’t remember a thing. Crazy that this would be on a list of albums of must-hears before you die.
Surprised how little I enjoyed this considering how much I like Back To Black. I like Help Yourself a lot but the rest were not engaging to me it was a bit of a slog and I scrubbed through a fair bit. Vocally she sounds like she’s trying to emulate something as opposed to how natural she sounds on BTB etc with the same singing style. Interesting subjects and themes she was kind of a pick-me asshole on this one, it was a fitting life-account for a 19yr old.
Pretty fun! Mostly engaging but was a bit meandering overall but that’s his style I guess. No strong feelings for or against.
Lovely to listen to while walking! I didn’t like any of the songs on this one as much as the other songs of his that I’m familiar with, but I liked it overall and found it engaging. His voice is so amazing and feels so good to hear, it’s very easy listening. I have no connection to religion but hearing someone like Stevie Wonder sing about it is very moving.
No strong feelings for or against, it was nice background music but I didn’t connect to it at all I found it easy to tune out of. Really cool that he played most of the instruments himself!
Good album. I haven’t listened to any of these songs for a long time and I don’t actually like the album quite as much as I thought I did. I don’t remember her whole thing sounding as much of an affectation as it does listening to it again now. She had a great voice though she was obviously very talented and I like and appreciate her vulnerability.
It was alright as far as meandering prog-rock goes but it’s still not for me, this one didn’t change that unfortunately, I thought it was pretty boring. I’m hoping that one day I’ll find something in this genre that I love!
It was alright, I enjoyed it enough for it not to be a 1 star. Nothing really stuck out to me.
I liked this! Great chill ambient music but not in a way that fades into the background. Great walking music! I already really liked Glorybox and I enjoyed the rest of the songs as well I didn’t get bored of any of them.
This sucked and was corny and boring. Barely made it through most songs. Nice voice I guess. You can tell it was mostly old white dudes that picked these albums.
I can tell I’m supposed to think it’s interesting but every song is the same group of 3 or 4 noises over and over again and it’s boring. I love Talking Heads and I like Roxy Music but this was nonsense. Weird/avant-garde isn’t automatically good but I’m sure it was ground breaking at the time so that’s cool.
Really fun! I listened to the French version and it was super easy to listen to the vibe was very cool! Love a new-new wave 80’s queer pop vibe.
Another live album that isn’t impacted negatively by it! Great voice I would have loved to be there it sounded like such a fun time. Chain Gang was a great song I hadn’t heard before and obviously Bring it On Home to Me was fantastic as well. Really liked this one Sam Cooke is amazing.
I love this type of interchangeable faceless 90’s alt rock! Great walking music with a good nostalgic vibe despite not knowing any song apart from ‘Mrs Robinson’. Nothing too special but I liked it.
This was nice to listen to but I definitely lost track of what I was listening to and tuned out more and more as it went on. Nothing too special, no real stand out songs and it was a bit samey for me.
This was nice to listen too, great vibe and interesting lyrics. I don’t know or listen to much Bob Marley and I was surprised I recognised a couple of these songs. I liked it but didn’t love it.
It was fine. 3/4 through most songs I was like yeah ok I get it. Sounds like the type of music Jamie Oliver would choose as a theme song for his shows. It’s pretty creative and it’s cool that’s it’s female led. Nothing really grabbed me.
It was alright. I feel like they have way better stuff than this? More blues inspired than I realised. There wasn’t a song I hated and I LOVED Passive Manipulation, Meg rocks. Fine album.
A classic! Very nostalgic. None of the other songs are quite as good as the most popular ones but it’s a fun, kooky easy listen. I’ll never skip a Crowded House song.
It was alright the song I thought where bad where laughingly bad but I didn’t hate it. It sounded interesting I guess.
I really liked this. They’re a lot weirder sounding than I thought they’d be, it doesn’t sound like just one thing it’s definitely “dorky” sounding but still good. Interesting themes too not just really syrupy love songs like I thought.
Not for me. Renaissance faire nonsense that wasn’t enjoyable to listen to. I tried to listen as long as I possibly could but found no enjoyment in it at all.
Listening to all these is starting to feel more and more like an obligation now and this album was the real first casualty of feeling this way, I skimmed though most songs. I definitely like their later stuff more than this album it doesn’t really go anywhere. Always thought the group was a cool concept though.
