Track 1 took me back to being a teenager and 7 straight back to Notting Hill . Gentle , easy listening .
Obviously 2 great singles but could take or leave several of the others . Could sense that Franz Ferdinand were influenced by this album . Last track lifted it off not a 3 review for me in spite of slightly uncomfortable lyrics .
As expected - not for me .
Instantly recognisable vocals and guitar - instantly forgettable 70s easy listening Radio 2 music .
Surprised how much I enjoyed this as I remembered it as a very angry album. Some clever lyrics and a well deserved second listen .
Just as well albums were shorter in the 60s as I'm not sure I could have listened any longer . Flashbacks to films that had girls in short dresses dancing unrealistically in nightclubs . Did recognise a couple of the tunes -Acker Bilk did it better .
Another instant 70s soundtrack .Gave it one more star because of 'Our House' which I have always loved . Prefer the Simon and Garfunkel type ones . Mostly forgettable .
Has 'Papa was a Rolling Stone 'got the longest intro ever ? Over 3 minutes and still waiting . In spite of that it's still another short LP .
An album as old as I am !!! I hope I'm wearing better . Interesting but no Woody Guthrie. Fine in the background but no desire for a second listen for me. Best when the hard edges are softened by either Guthrie or the harmonica . I imagine Lennie , George and Slim listening to this .
Never bought any Smiths albums at the time and this justifies my decision . Another instantly recognisable but forgettable album . Interesting to listen to but I shan't be going through any more of the back catalogue in the basis of this .
An hour and a quarter ! Remember this album vividly. Background to teenage parties and afternoon Radio listening with David Hamilton . Ended up playing this on the Sonos rather than the sound bar as I thought it deserved the better sound quality . Enjoyed it . Not enough to buy but would listen again . Almost a 4 . Top of 3 as some of it is a bit samey .
Giving it 3 ... just . It feels as though half of the album is really good and the other half pretty derivative. Found Skeleton Key almost unlistenable .
Interesting. I suppose this is what this is all about , listening to things I would never have come across usually. Not certain I would listen again for choice but it was ok in the background . Take 5, obviously a classic , easier listen than some of the others . Like the album art work .
Of its time . Missed it when it first came out - can't say I'm that sorry .
I second Jim's thoughts . Obviously my idea that I quite like The Eagles is not based on this album Think I've been influenced by Hotel California .
Didn't get them when I was young and I still don't . Awful . Listened to the remastered version and it was terrible so dread to think what it was like first time round . First track was dreadful and it got progressively worse . I just knew from the title that A Day in the Life of a Tree was going to be dire . Can I give it a zero ?
Ok but a bit 'poor man's Nirvana' If this had been a book it would have needed editing .
Clown Strike almost unlistenable. Glad when it was finished .
At last , one I would actually listen to again .
Can I give this zero ? I'm so not the target audience for this . I even listened to it in a residential area and I still didn't get it .
He's got a lovely voice . Several tracks are a bit 'film soundtrack ish' , I can imagine Alan Bates and Julie Christie on screen . Not more than a hair's breadth between Duchess and Dylan's Lay Lady Lay . Will need to check which one came first . Ok but wouldn't listen again .
Boring , repetitive grey noise .
Going back to ones I missed . I knew this was going to be a 4 but did think it might be a 5 . Having listened all tge way through on a car journey I stick with 4 . Do live a concept album though . Would give the video a 5 .
This passed me by in 1973 and I can't say I'm sorry . Will not be bothering to listen to this aden .
Could only be improved by listening/dancing to this in a big top on a sunny evening
OK . I kind of remember this sound ... elements of Genesis instrumentals at times . Not sure I'd listen again though . Almost a 3 , top end of 2
I'm sure we've had a bit of a boogie at Jane's at the end of a party to something like this - probably needs some sunshine, vino and company to really appreciate it . Quentin Tarantino may have used bits in films - or even Breaking Bad. Background music . !
Glad when this finished ,
Skipped several tracks - too Rah for me - Canyon Jam was10 mi utes of wondering if my speaker had broken or wondering if itcwas finished yet . Jasco and Itsari were actually listenable . I suppose albums like this are what this is all about . Shan't listen again though .
Boring - meh.
Solid 3 even though History is one of my all time favourite songs . Didn't feel the rest of the album was quite the same level .
Started off enjoying a trip down memory lane but it got a bit samey.
Good solid 3. Perfect gentle Saturday afternoon listening. A lovely clear album.
At last - an album that I knew even before listening was going to be a 5 . Love this , always have , always will . Amazing videos and superb live performance video too . Too hard to pick a favourite track . Whichever is playing .
Well I enjoyed this. Recognised the voice straight away and I'm certain Ive heard most of the songs in Frankie and Benny's over the years. Wouldn't be out of place in The Godfather either.
Maes B chills. Instantly back to the late 90s. Has worn well. Cymru does Britpop.
So good I listened to
it twice straight through . Big Radiohead hole in my collection needs fixing .
Bit of a mixed bag , not sure I'd listen again . The good bits are very good but the rest is a bit pretentious .
The singles are worth listening to but the rest was just vanilla .
I have to admit to living a jig at a do when Come on Eileen comes on even if it's not cool anymore however I could take or leave the rest . Feels a bit dated now .
Nice background album . Halfway through I realised I hadn't heard it before but it just sounded like a mix of Simon and Garfunkel and Belle and Sebastian. Interesting to listen to , didn't skip any tracks but wouldn't necessarily choose to play it again . Top end of 3 but not quite enough for a 4 .
I really was dancing to this when I was 12- at youth club in the village hall . Enjoyable blast of the past . We all thought Marc was the sexiest man ever and Hot Love is still impossible to sit still to .
Bit ordinary . Bottom end of 3 .
Not for me . Just noise . Every track started the same . Thank goodness it was only 28 minutes long .
Recognisable but ultimately quite disappointing.
Great . Love a bit of FBS . Perfect warm up for a weekend of music in a tent . Especially liked first track .
The sort of thing this project is about - never heard them , or heard of them ! But enjoyed this . If an album has an A side and B side this would be it . Would listen again , probably with headphones to appreciate the first 3 .
Not as great as I was expecting .
OK
I'm going to steal someone else's review - now we know why he's called Skip !!! I'm certain it was taped like this that made Andy Kershaw decide he didn't want to be John Peel . Endless , awful knob twiddling mixing in a bedroom . No wonder he only did one album .
Not for me .
Preferred the quieter ones , ok ish background music . As Sinatra would say 58 ' was a very good year' but this isn't as great as Glen Miller .
Nice background but a bit samey .
Apart from Pretty in Pink pretty forgettable . Not quite a 3 .
Surprisingly disappointing.Virginia Plain the highlight but the rest a mixed bag .
Amazing that this is 60 years old and I seem to remember listening to it at so many different times . Lovely, anyone who sings about Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost is up there in my book. Always think about Homeward Bound when I'm sitting on Warrington Bank Quay platform. Good solid 4.
It doesn't get close to Nirvana . Wouldn't dash out to buy or listen to this again .
Sort of music you hear from a pub juke box but don't choose yourself.
Well....First thoughts were 'what the heck?' but the background music drew me in as it was so lovely and then I started really listening to the lyrics . I did find the higher pitched screechy parts a bit difficult but I think this could be one of those albums that you just need to sit really quietly and immerse yourself in . Could only find it on Youtube where she clearly has some very committed fans . Not far into a 3 but a 3 nevertheless.
Remember the single and liked it but found the rest just average . Bit soundtrack to an American teen movie sort of music .
My first refuse to listen to . I have to leave a 1 though as it won't let me comment only .
Really liked this . Listened it to twice straight through .
At first I thought it wasn't as bad as I was expecting but after a while it just all sounds the same . Not as 'rah' as it might have been but still not my sort of stuff .
Another one that goes on too long and sounds the same .
