I don't know much about jazz, but when I think of jazz music, this is exactly what I hear. I don't know that I've heard this before, but it felt like I had. Feels like a pinnacle of the form.
Not something I'll frequent, but would be great background music while working. Track 2 was likely the weakest.
Anything making fun of monarchs and people in power is good with me. Title track was awesome. Track 2 is a little slow and almost folksy in it's composition.
I'd personally focus a little more on the punky side of this music, but I also understand that Morrissey is like, an idol of post-punk. There's a lot of indie influences in this, and I don't love indie. But I can see (hear?) that this was likely groundbreaking forty years ago. Lyrically though, this is right up my alley. It's political and it's depressed. Interestingly, I liked the second side a lot more than the first. Wikipedia indicates that's where all the singles came from anyways. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out was excellent.
Excited to listen to this. Message In A Bottle is one of the greatest songs ever written.

Onto track 5. This album rules. I enjoy the songs I knew from The Police but this is groovy. A little punky, a little new-wavey, definitely some reggae in it (track 6 especially) my favorite of the three albums so far. One I would legitimately listen to on some regularity, and I'm just starting side two. Side two wasn't quite as strong and I thought No Time This Time was a weird song to end with. The Bed's Too Big Without You was a single for a reason. Still a really great album.
First one that came over the weekend, then we had the historic Spokane fire where Izze described it like we're the butthole between two butt cheeks that are on fire.
Not my thing. At all. I do like the horns in song 2 and it's quite catchy. Song 4 says it's in Garden State and Seven Pounds, and it does seem familiar. I can see the quality of this record and the musicianship, it's just not my thing. Very easy listening at least, but it's all kind of samey. Almost similar to some pop-punk and punk records where there's not a lot of major variety, just minor variety between the songs.
Oh boy. I fucking hate Kanye the person, and I've never been impressed by the music of his I've heard. Here we go...
1 - Dark Fantasy. I like the bounces around musically, like the choral vocals that are probably sampled elsewhere like most rap songs. Jesusfuck I do not like rap... was actually really into this until Kanye started rapping.
2 - Gorgeous. Applicable to the beat, not the vocals. FISH STICKS! What a fucking dipshit. Also fuck this guy. KYS you Nazi freak. Why am I listening to this.
3 - Power. I recognize this one. Very famous song, famous lyric. Don't like the ending, just the popular chorus and the King Crimson bit with the 21st century and drum fill.
Is this guy's entire schtick just slapping a bunch of other people's music together and rapping over it? Because that's how this has felt. I know that's very heavily what rap is, but I don't get why this or Kanye are considered special. I know this is my old-man-yells-at-cloud moment but while I recognize the production value of this record, I don't understand what makes it special at all. I am not likely to comment much more on the songs.
BUT HEY I KNOW ALL OF THE LIGHTS, AND I DON'T THINK THERE'S ANY SAMPLES! Monster sucked. A lot.

First album from a band I've seen live! I'm not a huge Pixies guy (and live, they blasted through a bunch of songs and didn't interact with the crowd at all, kinda weird) but Where Is My Mind? is one of the most known songs of all time. (And this album was name dropped in Here It Goes Again by OK GO.)
Each song flies so fast I haven't taken individual notes but this is right in my wheelhouse. Could see this becoming a favorite. Broken Face fucking rules.
I don't love the vocals of Black Francis (never have) but the song structures are absolutely my thing. The constant quiet/loud is a little jarring, but it works really well here. Would listen to this again.
60's pop! Interesting. I like some historical pop but I've legitimately never heard of her. This is exactly why I wanted to go through these albums.
It's pretty catchy, but nothing is standing out to me as "OH MY GOD." I can respect the musicianship, and totally understand why there's a lot of musicians (Elton John primarily) that call her a massive influence.
First album that I've listened to previously before this project! Not to get onto my soapbox, but this shouldn't be considered in the greatest bands ever. Greatest supergroup sure, but Jimmy Page was already a successful musician (as this band was once "New Yardbirds".)
Anyways - classic, classic album from a legendary band. Good Times Bad Times and Communication Breakdown are all-time songs IMO. Not a lot to say here. Exceptional from front to back.
Not a big folk guy, but this is EXACTLY what I think of when I think of folk music. I don't think I know enough about Cat Stevens (or whatever his name is now) to judge him but I know he's quite controversial.

Anyways, the harmonies and pop stylings of this album really capture Beatlemania to me. 60+ years later it still hits, just as catchy as it was. Title track and Can't Buy Me Love are legendary Beatles tracks.
Something completely new to me! I don't know that I've ever even heard of Supergrass. This sounds like something I would have enjoyed discovering in my youth. Very pop-punky. It's also very British, but I don't know fully how to explain that.
Going to guess there's at least two other Zeppelin albums that will be here, possibly three.
I don't know that I know this one as intimately as Led Zeppelin I, but Black Dog and Rock and Roll have always been favorites (and Stairway is maybe overrated...) but this always has been and always will be an excellent, world-class album. Again, not a ton to say here.
Punk rock! Another great day lol. I don't know this band at all, although I recognize the name. The saxophone constantly showing up is really cool. I dig the hell out of this album. Let's Submerge immediately stood out as something that could have been written by a contemporary pop-punk or ska band.
Minus the constant saxophone, it's like someone heard the Sex Pistols and said "we can do that but better". Not sure if I'd qualify it that way (regardless of how fake SP might have actually been, that album is a classic) but that's what this comes off as. Really good shit regardless.
Catchy, but this isn't for me at all. Don't know that I've ever listed to Afrobeat before. I respect that this criticizes the Nigerian government (and may have gotten Kuti's mother murdered and his commune destroyed) but I won't likely come back to this. Each track being over 12 minutes long is real difficult for my punk rock heart to accept lol.
Pretty classic album. I haven't listened to it front-to-back before, but am familiar with multiple songs from it. It's musically very solid but it's not quite my thing. Kinda latin, kinda jazzy, kinda progressive. Really good stuff, but I feel like I probably should be blazed on the couch listening to this on vinyl to really appreciate it the way it needs.
I'm not a big art rock guy. I am aware of Wilco and Jeff Tweedy, but this is not in my wheelhouse. (over half the album are songs 4 minutes or longer!)
I liked Kamera a lot (3:30 lol) but most of these songs are too soft and slow for my normal tastes.
More music that isn't really for me. I recognize Tinseltown in the Rain though. Not into jazzy pop music, but like most of these records, I can recognize the artistry.
Oh this is punk as hell. The actual song Kick Out the Jams is about to be a new favorite. Love live albums, love punk (or protopunk), love a vocalist who uses the fuck word. Some songs are a little longer and bleed a little closer into more classic rock-and-roll or even hard rock and metal, but if you wanted to argue this as one of the first punk rock albums, you wouldn't be wrong.
Another Pixies album! This time their third, guessing that means Doolittle will be in this list of albums too. I like the song structures and the dichotomy between the choruses/verses in that traditional Pixies quiet/loud thing. Doesn't quite hit as hard as Surfer Rosa IMO.
All time classic grunge album. They're the key grunge band that didn't suffer the deaths and breakups the rest of the major ones did. Even Flow and Alive are excellent songs. You could say that about much of this record. I will give props to anyone who gets bored of this though. It's a little plodding at times if you aren't a huge fan of Vedder's vocals. I really enjoy the dark lyrics (emo boy at heart here) but if you aren't a fan of that growling crooning thing he does... this could get old fast.

I mean, I can understand changing and sampling from other songs as an art form. But I just don't understand Kanye's appeal, or whatever of it existed when he was generally popular.
Someone tells me this gets better after four songs. Because holy autotune, holy overproduction, holy shit. I don't mean to yuck people's yums, but this just doesn't do ANYTHING for me other than want to put something else on. I get it, I'm a white dude from middle class middle America, it's not made for me. But I just don't understand the appeal. Was it because gangsta rap was big at the time and the rap audience was looking for something different?

I don't know the title track, which probably means I won't know anything from this record. It's very sweet lyrically, and wow Dolly had a hell of a voice.
A few songs in and maybe I don't hate country music as much as I thought I did, maybe it's just modern country that doesn't hold any appeal to me. This won't be a daily driver, but if THIS was the country music I heard growing up in b-f-nowhere, I might have taken a liking to it. Doesn't hurt that Dolly was a good person too. RIP.

Vicious sounds almost like something that Bowie would have wrote... then I went to Wikipedia and found out he was the producer of this record and was instrumental in getting Lou Reed's career going. Pretty cool.
No shit. Can I Kick It? is from Walk on the Wild Side???? Holy shit. Heard that sample for years and didn't realize what it was. I understand immediately from the lyrics why I hadn't heard this song before, even though it's Reed's biggest. Not something you get exposed to in conservative America.
This is a little slower for my typical tastes, but side A was excellent. Side B wasn't quite as catchy, and felt like it slowed even more, but all-in-all, this is a really good glam album.
David Byrne! I only know a few Talking Heads songs. This should be fun. Is this the most prototypical "new wave" band ever?
Bryne's vocalizations are probably not for me. I enjoy them on the first play, but I don't know that this would hold up on constant listens for me. I've enjoyed the shorter songs (Thank You for Sending Me an Angel was really good, seems like that was the hit from this record) but the longer songs drag a little for me. I do like the synths and "80's" sounds (on an album from the late 70s) but the punk in me wants more from the punk bases of the music.
I can see where this would be someone's favorite band but it's not really my thing.
Hell yeah. One of the greatest rock records of all time. I don't recall a skippable track across this record, but it's been a while since I listened to it.
It's not hyperbole to say that Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child O' Mine are three of the greatest hard rock tracks ever written. Hell, almost every track on the record has it's own Wikipedia page. It's really damn hard to think of a better side than the G side, across all the music I know.
Honestly... what could this band have been without ego? Cool that Slash and Duff came back. I just hope Chinese Democracy made it into the 1001 alb... bahahahaha.

I really don't know what I'm listening for here. The beats are fairly catchy but everything's fairly slow paced and it kinda just blends together after a while to me. This sounds very much like generic 90's rap to me. It's probably a genre-and-sound defining record, but I don't understand the nuances of rap enough to know.
It's pretty good music to have on in the background of my workday, but I don't know that I'd come back to this much.

I'd call this disco? It's not something I'd normally listen to, and probably won't go back to it much, but the vocals are incredible and the beats are really groovy. I don't really have a ton of commentary on this. Disco was never and will never be my thing. Cool to get some exposure to it here though.
Janis Joplin. Hell yeah. I don't know that I know this record, but acid rock is awesome. I'm too sober to listen to this record as it's intended, but it's excellent. Piece of My Heart is an all-time song and their version is my favorite. This album is really interesting sounding, as the fake crowd noises make it seem like it might have been live (it was not.)
I have never heard of Shuggie Otis before. This sounds like typical 70's funk. When I think of a generic 70's movie, and generic 70's music, this is what I think of. I don't mean that to indicate that generic = bad, but that it's very much the prototype or stereotype of what I think of 70's funk/soul.
Really easy listening, but I don't find it super engaging. (Not shocking, for someone who prefers punk and metal and music with more speed and aggression.)
My first Springsteen record on this project! I recognized Badlands immediately. This is a little darker than I expect out of Springsteen (admittedly, I could name about four songs, I'm no expert.) It's a little dark and moody, but that's right up my alley.
Honestly the most I know about Springsteen is actually Weinberg... and hoo boy is he a force on this record. The drumming is exceptional. I'll come back to this again.
Wikipedia says this is a grunge record?The first song (Country Home) is definitely not the grungiest... it feels like a Neil Young song. Wikipedia also says this song was written in the 70's, so that would make a lot of sense.
Okay. Now we're on to Fuckin' Up. This sounds like a real grunge song. Huh. Who could have known that Neil Young had range (end sarcasm.)
Gratuitous solos are here in some of the larger songs! There's a handful of really long tracks that I'm going to assume are similar with extended instrumentals.
This was... not as good as I was expecting from the concept of "Neil Young + grunge". I'd rather listen to something else Young did, or an actual grunge act. The two together did not go as well as I'd have thought.
