1001 Albums Summary

Wanted to love this album, unfortunately dragged in the middle with several songs that blended together into a slog. The bookends are great, highlight is Sprawl II

Understand the significance of the album and overall enjoyed it, but in the end it wasn't quite for me.

This was a confusing listen. After 5 songs I was ready to rate this one star. By the end I was charmed by the production and the sound. The main issue is Wainwright's style of singing is not for me. I was begging him to enunciate the words. This rating could go up after a re-listen.

The music lover in me wanted to like this, however I'm already not the biggest jazz fan and this is a jazz heavy album. Something about her singing out of rhythm with the music made me feel actual anxiety-it's a personal pet peeve of mine.

This album must be listened to with headphones while doing nothing else. It is literally ambient background music, how good can it be? A pleasant listen in a quiet place with headphones but would never listen again.

Albums like this is why I started this. First foray into this band, and what an introduction. Great album; funky soulful innovative- all the buzzwords. Can not wait to listen amany more times.

Possibly the best album of the 21st century.

Some decent songs, but as a whole not for me. Production wasn't great, the mix was off to me with vocals being far too loud.

Strange album. Opening track lead me to believe I was in for something completely different than what I got. No defined genre, but overall a charming album with familiar sounds.

Can't believe I've never heard of this woman. This was a very good album and I'm excited to see more from her on this journey.

Second half of the album was far superior to the first (excluding souvenir). Could have cut 5-6 songs and had a 4-5 star album. I understand they are experimenting with the synth and the sounds it can make, but just because it can make a certain sound does not mean that sound should be recorded onto a album.

Nice melodies and obviously great vocals, but in the end quite boring.

Jazz typically makes me anxious; the random nature does not fit my sonic palate. However this was delightful.

A classic for a reason.

Basically a Bowie album with Iggy singing. Not a bad thing.

Beautiful songs sung beautifully.

What a surprise, one of my favorite bands of the 21st century is on the list. Shocked it was not American Water that was included, but Bright Flight is also great. Sonically nothing special, Steve Malkmus was not a collaborator on this album so it has more of a plain indie sound. However Silver Jews has always been about the lyrics. David Berman was an amazing poet, and the lyrics do not disappoint. I Remember Me is a highlight, and achingly sad song about what could have been. And Tennessee is the best on the album, witty and earnest. RIP David.

This book isn't titles "1001 albums you could listen to before you die" it specifically used the word MUST. Really? I MUST listen to this drivel before I die!? Is it only so I can appreciate all the good music in the world? I'm writing my own book: " Life Is Too Short: 1001 Albums you must NOT subject yourself to before you die" and this is the inaugural selection.

Not sure what I'm missing here. Definitely some bright spots musically but I have a set peeve about music with vocals I can't quote hear or make out what the lyrics are. A few songs needed to be half as long as they droned on for.

Dislike the vocal style a lot-why not try and actually sing? However, musically it was pretty good with some good rythym and decent tracks.

I used to think Radiohead was music for college freshmen who thought they were intellectuals because they "got" their music. And this pretentious drivel proves it. How did Pitchfork give this a 10?? At several points during the album I thought I was listening to Brian Eno's music for airports again. Only giving 2 stars because there are some listenable songs. You can not convince me there are many over 30 die hard fans who actually like this album.

Nothing revolutionary here, quality musicians playing quality music. Good to put on in the background in a good way.

Some great musicianship here, not entirely my cup of tea but the beats and the rhythm carry the album.

This is all forgettable album with nothing to say. Doesn't make it bad, and I actually thought it finished strong. However, how can it possibly make this list? There is nothing special here.

Title track is great. Music is interesting at points and unique in an endearing way. The live cover of light my fire was terrible.

This was a fine album with some catchy tunes however I fail to see how it could be included on this list.

Monumental hip hop album, phenomenal listening experience.

I want to give this 4 stars but the second half of the album drags the whole down too far. Blackout is the highlight for me.

Don't want to give it one star because it's not bad it's just not for me.

Why

First half is a 5, second half is a 2. Round up because sound and vision is so incredible.

The potential for all time greatness was in their grasp. Only if they had a singer.

Take the album out of this book and leave a footnote that one only needs to listen to bittersweet symphony.

Don't let the first three songs fool you, this album is nothing special. Going from Life in the Fast Lane into Wasted Time is so incredibly jarring it infuriated me.

An all time great album in modern music. The title track is a driving machine of energy that gets you ready for what is to come: a multi-genre journey of incredible music. I am a Beatles superfan and this is the album that is most like the Beatles at their peak. Just phenomenal.

Actually enjoyable songs, usually this isn't my cup of tea but found it interesting.

I understand the impact of this album on the career of the Stones and how it propelled them into more experimentation and put them into the conversation with the Beatles. This is close to a four start but there is too much 60s generic britpop for me.

Please more albums like this; 35 minutes and packed with talent and soul. Listed to this on a Sunday morning and it was delightful.

Not Neil's best. I understand the context to the creation of this album and the grief he was experiencing, but some songs are a mess.
