Maybe my ears are at fault here (or the sound of streaming services is so shitty to make the matter discernible) but I can't hear any pivotal difference between the original version of this album and the 20th anniversary remix by Steve Albini (the drum sound?). Rest in peace, Steve, by the way. We lost a rare pair of ears -- among other things -- the day you left us... Apart from that, I've never heard of these guys before today. The highlights of this pop-punk full-length debut are "Extra Medium", "Pray For Rain", "It's Never Be The Same Again" and "180 Emotional Ollie" for me. The rest is pretty good for the genre. It feels lived in and heartfelt in a dorky way indeed. Mikey Erg's vocals are especially on point for me -- raspy, but melodic and expressive in all the right manners. Not so sure of what makes this album so special compared to other pop-punk LPs. Maybe some stylistic 180-turns into other music genres, as in very short parts of "A Very Pretty Song For A Very Special Lady pt.2" and "I Feels Better Tonight", or the whole of "Rod Argent". which indeed harnesses The Zombies' early artistry... But it's not as if the Ergs! added a lot of those outside ingredients into the formula... That said, listening to the record again I can see myself warming up even more to it. Maybe what makes The Ergs! one-of-a-kind is paradoxically some sort of "universal" feel for American melodic punk that turns them into a platonic ideal for the genre, gathering the artistry of all sorts of times and places into one single artistry that's still cohesive enough. Now currently listening to their compilation *Hindsight is 20/20, My Friend", and it sounds close to perfect for the genre as well, or conversely explores further some other tones in a fashion that's both tongue-in-cheek AND exciting. It's fine. Another punk album I've never heard before. I get into this kind of music. Might take a few more listens to decide if I like it or if it just a quick fun listen.... 3/5

Dorkrockcorkrod takes a bit of time to get going and doesn't always stick the landing on a record that interrupts its own momentum often, but it's largely half an hour of good fun, decent pop punk melodies with that almost melancholic energy that the genre tends to deliver. I liked Most Violent Rap Group, Running, Jumping Standing Still and Vampire Party most, solid 3/5, there's a lot better from the pop punk scene but they were solid and enjoyable.

Not the biggest fan of pop punk. It's okay, but a lot of it just sounds the same. 3 stars.

Fun poppy punk that was short enough it didn't wear on me at all. The titles were pretty interesting but I wasn't able to listen to this and follow the lyrics closely. Might like it even more if I do that.

Even though this LP featured some fun, poppier punk, it ultimately failed to register with me. The instrumentals, production, and overall execution are fine, but 1700+ albums in and I’m drowning in just fine listens. No disrespect to The Ergs, just not feeling that this is listen before you die material.
