L.A. Woman by The Doors
Aug 28 2023

Classic is the word for this album. From the hypnotic riff of the changeling to the guitar play on been down so long the slow build up of all the songs is mesmerising. Cars hissing. L.a. woman. Crawling King snake and of course light my fire give mr Morrison a chance to use his voice to full effect. Mr Mojo do your stuff.

Hms Fable by Shack
Jul 02 2026

H.M.S. Fable is an album that feels both classic and timeless. It doesn’t rely on late-90s production gimmicks; instead, it relies on timeless melodies, impeccable songwriting, and sheer emotional sincerity. It is a record that makes you feel deeply, makes you want to sing along, and leaves you feeling genuinely uplifted. For anyone who loves beautifully crafted guitar pop, brilliant storytelling, and music with a massive heart, H.M.S. Fable is an absolute, indispensable masterpiece.

Low by David Bowie
Jul 03 2026

The first half consists of short, jagged, and intensely rhythmic tracks. The lyrics are sparse—sometimes only a few lines—dealing with isolation, travel, and emotional numbness. "Speed of Life" sets a wordless, driving tone, while "Sound and Vision" juxtaposes an incredibly catchy, upbeat synth-pop melody with lyrics about sitting in a dark room waiting for inspiration to return. "Always Crashing in the Same Car" serves as a haunting metaphor for his self-destructive past Flip the record over, and the pop structures vanish completely. Side two is a series of vast, cinematic instrumentals heavily influenced by German electronic bands like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, combined with Brian Eno’s ambient textures. "Warszawa" is the emotional anchor here. It is a sweeping, mournful landscape with Bowie chanting in a made-up, phonetic language that sounds like an ancient choir. "Subterraneans" closes the album with a weeping saxophone, dedicated to the people trapped behind the Berlin Wall.

Marcus Garvey by Burning Spear
Jul 04 2026

If you want to understand the true heart, soul, and political conviction of roots reggae, Marcus Garvey is essential listening. It is a raw, beautiful, and deeply hypnotic journey that sounds just as powerful and relevant today as it did decades ago. A flawless 5/5 masterpiece

Murmur by R.E.M.
Jul 05 2026

Released in April 1983, R.E.M.’s debut full-length album Murmur didn’t just introduce a band from Athens, Georgia—it essentially mapped out the blueprint for American alternative college rock. In an era dominated by sleek, neon, synth-heavy British pop and bombastic arena rock, Murmur arrived like a ghost from the woods: mysterious, atmospheric, and completely out of step with its time, which is exactly why it remains timeless. Murmur is a flawless debut. By refusing to chase 1983’s trends, R.E.M. built an insular world that never ages. If you want to understand where indie rock came from, this is the sacred text.

Jul 06 2026

After a brutal seven-year strike against their former record label and the departure of core guitarist Dave Gregory, Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding pivoted entirely away from standard guitar-pop. What they delivered instead was what Partridge called "orch-ustic"—a stunning, deeply mature fusion of acoustic instruments and massive, intricate orchestral arrangements recorded at Abbey Road.

Rock 'N Soul by Solomon Burke
Jul 07 2026

Solomon Burke’s Rock 'N Soul (1964) is an absolute milestone. Often overlooked in favor of later 60s heavyweights like Otis Redding or Aretha Franklin, this record proves exactly why Burke was crowned the "King of Rock 'n' Soul." Rock 'N Soul is a vital piece of music history. It captures the exact bridge where 1950s R&B evolved into the powerhouse soul music of the late 1960s. If you love Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, or classic vinyl grooves, this belongs in your rotation

Duck Stab/Buster & Glen by The Residents
Jul 08 2026

The album consists of 14 short tracks that strip pop music down to its skeleton and rebuild it using cheap synthesizers, cartoonish pitch-shifted vocals, distorted guitars, and unsettling sound effects. The tracks are catchy, but in a deeply haunting way—almost like corrupted nursery rhymes. The production relies heavily on the Digi-Design modifications they made to their studio gear, giving the entire record a claustrophobic, lo-fi electronic texture that was way ahead of its time for 1978.

At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan
Jul 09 2026

At Mister Kelly’s (recorded in 1957, released in 1958) is a masterpiece of live jazz. In an era where Sarah Vaughan was frequently backed by massive, florid studio orchestras, this album strips away the production to present her alongside a crack, minimalist trio: Jimmy Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. The result is one of the most wonderfully intimate, relaxed, and transparent documents of a vocalist at the absolute height of their powers.

That's The Way Of The World by Earth, Wind & Fire
Jul 10 2026

The Title Track ("That's the Way of the World") The centerpiece of the record is an absolute masterclass in arrangement. Maurice White and Charles Stepney crafted a song that feels incredibly light and airy, yet carries massive emotional weight. It represents the absolute pinnacle of Earth, Wind & Fire’s artistry. It perfectly balanced commercial appeal with complex, boundary-pushing musicality. Decades later, its warmth and optimism still feel entirely fresh

Killing Joke by Killing Joke
Jul 12 2026

This album feels like walking through a bleak, smoke-filled, Cold War-era industrial wasteland. It combines the jagged, angular energy of post-punk with a heavy, hypnotic, tribal rhythm section. Geordie Walker’s guitar work here is legendary—metallic, droning, and textured, rather than traditional blues-based metal riffs. Jaz Coleman delivers his lyrics like an apocalyptic prophet shouting into the void.

Punishing Kiss by Ute Lemper
Jul 13 2026

The true genius of Punishing Kiss lies in its production and arrangements, masterminded heavily by Neil Hannon and Joby Talbot of The Divine Comedy. They bridge the gap between traditional theatrical drama and modern alternative pop. The album carries a distinct, cinematic "noir" energy. It alternates between smoky, alcohol-hazed jazz clubs and grand, sweeping orchestral melancholy. Lemper’s vocal delivery remains unflinchingly severe, sardonic, and passionate—she doesn’t merely sing these songs; she inhabits them like a stage actor under a single, harsh spotlight.

Pretzel Logic by Steely Dan
Jul 14 2026

What makes Pretzel Logic stand out in Steely Dan's discography is its accessibility. While later albums like Aja or Gaucho are pristine, sprawling masterclasses in studio perfection, Pretzel Logic still has a bit of a raw, rock-and-roll heartbeat. The hooks are instant, the guitar solos (especially Jeff "Skunk" Baxter’s work) are scorching, and the lyricism is as wonderfully cynical and witty as ever. It’s a transitional album, but arguably one of their most cohesive and effortless. If you are looking for an entry point into Steely Dan’s catalog without diving straight into the deep end of heavy jazz fusion, this is the perfect place to start.

The Undertones by The Undertones
Jul 15 2026

Few albums in the history of rock and roll capture the sheer, unadulterated joy of being young, bored, and hopelessly romantic quite like The Undertones' self-titled 1979 debut. Emerging from Derry, Northern Ireland, during the height of the Troubles, five teenagers managed to block out the political turmoil surrounding them by focusing on the things that actually occupied their teenage minds: girls, chocolate bars, and cousin rivalry. The result is an absolute masterpiece of power-pop and first-wave punk.

Bossanova by Pixies
Jul 16 2026

The Surf & Sci-Fi Aesthetic: Moving away from the biblical and gory themes of Doolittle, Black Francis leaned heavily into UFOs, aliens, and classic 1960s surf-rock instrumentals. The opening cover of "Cecilia Ann" and the gorgeous, dream-like closer "Havalina" frame the album perfectly. The middle run of this album is spectacular. "Velouria" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful love songs of the alternative era (elevated by a eerie theremin-like synth), while "Dig for Fire" acts as a brilliant, choppy nod to Talking Heads.

Dare! by The Human League
Jul 17 2026

Dare did something revolutionary: it proved that synthesizers could feel human. Instead of treating the machines like cold, sci-fi novelties (think early Gary Numan or Kraftwerk), The Human League used them to write incredibly catchy, emotionally resonant love songs. The contrast between Phil Oakey's deep, dramatic baritone and the sweet, untrained backing vocals of Sulley and Catherall gave the record a "party-next-door" warmth that anyone could relate to.

Jul 18 2026

If you are looking for the ultimate "no-skip" R&B album to set a mood, this is it. With its live horns, rich Rhodes piano keys, and Maxwell's effortlessly smooth vocal delivery, Urban Hang Suite remains a timeless, essential masterpiece of modern soul music.

Ocean Rain by Echo And The Bunnymen
Jul 19 2026

Ocean Rain is a darkly romantic, brilliantly theatrical record that captures a band operating at the absolute peak of their creative powers." By swapping out the gloomy claustrophobia of post-punk for sweeping, cinematic arrangements, Echo & the Bunnymen created an album that feels entirely timeless. It is gloomy yet majestic, cold yet deeply passionate. Whether you are revisiting it or diving in for the first time, Ocean Rain remains an essential, breathtaking listen.

Jul 20 2026

What makes the album flow so well is that it feels like a real-time street-corner hangout. The vocal interplay between the four MCs is masterful. They constantly trade lines, finish each other's sentences, throw out ad-libs, and modulate their voices—using everything from frantic falsettos to cartoonish Muquet-like delivery to match the mood. They didn't just write verses; they crafted dynamic, multi-layered group performances.

Jul 21 2026

What makes Honky Tonk Masquerade special is its seamless blend of genres. Ely doesn't treat country and rock as opposing forces; instead, he uses the heat of a road-tested West Texas band to bridge the gap. Ely drew heavily from his Flatlanders running mates. Butch Hancock contributed poetically sharp tracks like "Tonight I'm Gonna Go Downtown" and "Boxcars," while Jimmie Dale Gilmore penned the iconic, melancholic "Honky Tonk Masquerade." Ely’s own writing (like "Fingernails") adds an energetic, rockabilly punch. The record hinges on two phenomenal musicians: Lloyd Maines on steel guitar and Ponty Bone on accordion. The interplay between Maines' soaring pedal steel and Bone's Tex-Mex accordion gives the record its distinct sound—half neon-lit Lubbock dancehall, half border-town street party.

The Atomic Mr Basie by Count Basie & His Orchestra
Jul 22 2026

If you only ever listen to one post-WWII big band album in your life, make it this one. It bridges the classic swing era with modern bop sensibilities, executed with unmatched swagger and warmth

At Budokan by Cheap Trick
Jul 23 2026

Cheap Trick at Budokan isn't just a great live album; it's a essential time capsule of a band operating at absolute peak confidence. It bridges the gap between the melodic sweetness of the Beatles and the heavy, raucous swagger of 1970s hard rock.

Amnesiac by Radiohead
Jul 24 2026

Released in June 2001, Radiohead’s Amnesiac sits in one of the most fascinating spots in their discography. Recorded during the same infamously intense 1999–2000 sessions as Kid A, Amnesiac was initially pegged by critics and fans as "Kid B" or a collection of leftover B-sides. Look past that history, and Amnesiac reveals itself as a dark, claustrophobic, and deeply rewarding album. If Kid A felt like looking at a distant, icy apocalyptic landscape from a satellite, Amnesiac is the sound of being stuck down in the mud, fire, and rubble of it.

Like A Prayer by Madonna
Jul 25 2026

Like a Prayer remains a masterwork because its provocative nature was matched by top-tier songwriting and musicianship. It proved that pop music could carry immense emotional weight without sacrificing its ability to dominate the charts.

Gentlemen by The Afghan Whigs
Jul 26 2026

Gentlemen doesn't ask you to like its protagonist, but it demands your full attention. It’s dark, theatrical, brilliantly structured, and emotionally raw. Decades later, it remains a gold standard for how to infuse alternative rock with genuine soul and dramatic storytelling.

What's Going On by Marvin Gaye
Jul 27 2026

Few albums in modern history carry the emotional weight, musical brilliance, and cultural relevance of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 landmark, What’s Going On. Moving away from Motown’s traditional, hit-factory single format, Gaye crafted a seamless, nine-track concept album that acts as a poignant reflection on a world in turmoil. From the opening chatter and iconic sax intro of the title track, the album pulls you into a fluid, immersive soundscape. Blending smooth soul, jazz arrangements, orchestral strings, and lush vocal layering, the production feels organic and effortless. Songs flow into one another like movements in a symphony—whether addressing war and civil unrest (What’s Going On), environmental devastation (Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)), or urban poverty and despair (Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)). What makes the album so extraordinary is Gaye’s vocal delivery. Instead of shouting his frustration, he sings with a vulnerable, conversational intimacy that makes his plea for empathy feel deeply personal. Over five decades later, its themes remain painfully relevant, and its musical craftsmanship remains untouched. What’s Going On isn’t just one of the greatest soul records ever made—it is a landmark achievement in popular music. An essential, flawless five-star listen.

Want One by Rufus Wainwright
Jul 28 2026

no thanks

Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth
Jul 29 2026

Daydream Nation is an essential, immersive listen that defined an era of independent rock and continues to influence generations of guitar-driven bands

Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby by Girls Against Boys
Jul 30 2026

If you like your alternative rock dark, gritty, and driven by low-end bass swagger rather than standard grunge clichés, Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby is an absolute essential listen. It bridges the gap between abrasive underground hardcore and a hypnotic, danceable swagger that few bands have ever managed to replicate.

Take Me Apart by Kelela
Aug 01 2026

Take Me Apart is a rare debut that feels entirely fully realized from front to back. It avoids sounding cold or overly clinical by anchoring its avant-garde production in universal truths about love, lust, and the courage it takes to walk away

You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen
Aug 02 2026

You Want It Darker is a masterclass in late-career artistry. It avoids cheap sentimentality, offering instead an unblinking, beautifully composed look at the end of the road. Alongside contemporary swan songs like David Bowie’s Blackstar, it stands as a monument to an artist who maintained his creative fire and poetic genius right up until his final breath.

Youth And Young Manhood by Kings of Leon
Aug 03 2026

For many fans, this era remains the gold standard for the band—before they swapped their denim and unwashed hair for stadium-ready anthems and arena polish on later records like Only by the Night. It is loose, reckless, deeply authentic, and stands as one of the most exciting rock debuts of the 2000s.

Viva Hate by Morrissey
Aug 04 2026

2 in a week. You should be reported to the authorities

Aug 05 2026

CeeLo Green's career is defined by high-risk stylistic pivots. Though some of his later solo releases experienced uneven production or strayed into overly polished territory, his best work is untouchable. When he locks into a groove that bridges the gap between gritty Southern rap roots and soaring, theatrical soul, there is simply no one else quite like him.

Private Dancer by Tina Turner
Aug 06 2026

While a few cuts lean into safer, dated 1980s production choices—and some cover selections (like "Help!") divide purists—Private Dancer succeeds entirely on the back of Tina Turner's transcendent talent. It is a document of fierce independence, emotional depth, and a rare second act that completely reshaped the pop landscape.

The Rolling Stones by The Rolling Stones
Aug 07 2026

It captures a legendary band at ground zero. The energy is palpable, the musicianship is tight, and it remains one of the best cover-heavy albums to emerge from the British Invasion. It’s fascinating to hear the blueprint of blues-rock being written in real-time. Because it relies so heavily on covers of songs that many listeners may prefer in their original blues formats, it can occasionally feel derivative. It doesn't feature the grand songwriting heights or distinct personality of the classic albums the Stones would release just a few years later. Essential for music historians and die-hard fans who want to hear where the legend began, but skippable for casual listeners looking for the definitive Stones sound.

Apocalypse Dudes by Turbonegro
Aug 08 2026

If you have any appreciation for razor-sharp guitar work, over-the-top theatricality, and massive, infectious hooks, Apocalypse Dudes is essentially flawless. Universally praised by critics as a high-water mark for garage-punk and glam-punk crossover, frequently landing on best-of-all-time lists for underground rock.

The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground
Aug 09 2026

not my thing to be honest . never really got them

Good Old Boys by Randy Newman
Aug 10 2026

Good Old Boys is not an easy or comforting listen, and its sharp-edged satire has occasionally been misinterpreted. Yet, decades after its release, it remains a landmark achievement in American songwriting—fearless, intellectually rigorous, deeply compassionate, and darkly funny.

Snivilisation by Orbital
Aug 11 2026

Snivilisation is widely regarded as a high-water mark not just for Orbital, but for 1990s British electronic music as a whole. It bridges the gap between underground rave culture and sophisticated home listening, sitting comfortably alongside masterworks by acts like The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, and Aphex Twin.
