At Folsom Prison
Johnny CashFucking visceral. “I shot a man in Reno just to see him die” & they cheer… Best live album ever.
Fucking visceral. “I shot a man in Reno just to see him die” & they cheer… Best live album ever.
It's better than I remember, but still rather wet.
An immediate must purchase after about 10 minutes of listening. Muddy at his upbeat best. Glorious.
So this isn’t my kind of thing, really, but I can tell it’s great. The range of influences is incredible. I’ll listen again.
Still hangs together great - an absolute classic
Utterly glorious
One of the albums I grew up with, so it's difficult to rate 'objectively' - but I still think it holds up really well as a folk album.
Far better than I imagined. Always thought it would be soft-rock nonsense but it's a fine listen.
Well this is great.
Actually great. I mean I know it's great, but I hadn't properly listened before, and it's brilliant. Shame he's a grumpy sod.
God.
It's great but not my thing & I think it's aged quite a lot. But worth a listen.
Delightful.
Both better than I remember and yet it still sounds very mid-90s. Much better albums from the period.
Far better than I expected despite not really being my genre.
Bloody brilliant. Still feels fresh 30 years on.
Bit of a classic and holds up better than expected.
The most 80s album ever? Possibly, but I still liked it - though can't say I'll be rushing back to it.
A much better album than I'd imagined. More cohesive, less single-driven. Great.
I know it's class, but it doesn't absolutely grab me. Probably better after multiple listens.
Absolute class.
It's decent - gets better as it goes on. But I think sounds rather dated now (which is fair, it is)
Actually pretty good. Hangs together much better as an album than I imagined.
A proper boogie-woogie album. A bit of a classic but I'd happily listen to it again.
I've owned this for years and initially was a bit 'meh' about it, which I now realise was completely unfair. Having grown up a bit it now speaks to me much more.
Hugely better than I remember.
Fucking visceral. “I shot a man in Reno just to see him die” & they cheer… Best live album ever.
Very light music. It may have been innovative when it came out but I have to admit it left me a bit cold.
Not my thing really. Bit too clever for its own good.
Quality vocals, and about as country/western as you can get, but sounds ancient now. Mostly because it is.
I feel like I should be a bigger fan of this than I am, but it does seem to go on a bit...
Inoffensive, and I'm not sure it's a compliment.
Great, but he was a loon.
Glorious, bar the last, terrifying track :-)
Much better than I expected.
Obviously it's really good - just not my thing.
Middling.
Hadn't heard this before. Completely brilliant.
It's fine, but it no longer sounds exciting
Again not my usual genre but it's pretty great. Some fine hooks.
Amazing how gentle it sounds now. Still lovely though!
I know it's important, and there's some decent beats - but it's just not my thing. Sorry.
So well put together.
Absolute class.
Meh.
I don't think it's the best of his albums, but it's still class.
Nice rhythms, but probably needs a second listen before I get even vaguely hooked
You know, it's not bad. Pretty inventive.
It's fine, but it's no Pet Sounds...
Still stands up more than 20 years on.
Decent, but not their best
Loads better than I remember.
Boogie Woogie!
It's really good but you absolutely have to be in the right mood for it.
Well I'm an idiot. Every time I've heard this previously I've been a bit "don't know what the fuss is about". This time, I got it. It's brilliant & I was plain wrong.
Good, and fine production, but it didn't do much for me (though again I don't think I'm the audience)
Quality. Must have sounded epic when it came out.
Never been a better use for vinyl.
Absolutely brilliant. Immediate must buy.
I loved this when I was 13. Very much grown out of it.
It's better than I remember, but still rather wet.
Stone cold classic.
Better than I remember!
Classic
Some great tracks but I've never been a huge fan
Obviously it's absolutely beautiful; just very sparse
Not many albums make me feel as happy as this
Far Bluesier than I thought and much better than expected too!
Far better than I remember
Definitely underrated but also very much of its era
Masterpiece.
Never heard any Nanci Griffith before and it's fine country music
I'm definitely a late 80s/early 90s rap & hip hop fan rather than anything after
Definitely starting to show its age, and the singles really stand out, but still great.
Rod's finest effort. Even includes (basically) a drum solo
Classic
Appalling 80s plod rock, only improved by some slap bass, which ISN'T an improvement. Go away.
Far lovelier than I remember, and I remember it being nice anyway.
Perfectly pleasant album
I am much more a Neil Young solo fan than a Neil Young & Crazy Horse fan... But this is pretty solid.
Old school blues/punk which was probably important but I really don't think stands up to modern listening.
One of the greatest of all time.
Loved it when it came out, but barely listened because it felt so miserable. Still love it, and it's still miserable, but then so am I, so it's fine.
Magnificent, and it just gets better with every listen.
My least favourite Goldfrapp album - but that's not to say it isn't good! A little downbeat for me to love it though.
Great - much better tunes than I'd imagined & it works together so well.
Absolutely cracking.
Not their best (?) but still a great listen.
Sigh. I really struggle with the 80s stadium rock stuff. It sounds so terribly fake and insincere. I get it's fun, but this doesn't stir anything in me. I would give it 1.5 but I'm being generous.
Glorious.
I don't think it's Curtis' greatest work; he very definitely has a style and sticks to it, but it's a perfectly decent listen.
Seriously country. Not really my thing.
The greatest album ever?
It's really good - but not really my thing.
I do really like it but it doesn't grab me.
Almost a classic though I still think it's a touch too long.
I really enjoyed this. Well worth a few listens.
Wonderful. Loved it when it came out, still love it now.
I like it, but I don't love it.
I like it, I own it, but it is just fine rather than glorious
I don't think it's possible for a '60s James Brown album to be bad. This is marvellous.
Godlike.
Absolutely cracking bit of garage rock.
Great pop album.
Peerless. Or it would be if it weren't for the other Led Zep albums. Anyway, it's brilliant - and one of the best starts to an album of all time..?
I like it, it's a chilled out Sunday kind of vibe.
Peak naff but actually the songs are great and it's a proper pop album.
It's a fine album - an enjoyable listen. Nothing truly stands out though.
Some great tracks, a good listen, but it just never elevates higher. Still like it though!
One of my favourite albums ever. What a shame he never understood how loved he'd become.
Good fun, but all rather the same. Still a decent listen though.
It's lovely, late night jazz but pales in comparison to Back To Black. But that's a monster, and this is very solid. Ah, I still miss her.
Greatest album ever?
Not really for me. Nothing stood out.
Quality old school rock and blues
Glorious.
It's a proper rock album. Love it.
I enjoyed this FAR more than I thought I would. Always found Karen's voice too saccarine but actually it fits perfectly.
Glorious. Must-buy.
Solid 3/5. Some decent tunes but definitely a warm up for Hotel California.
It's marvellously average.
I enjoyed this. Decent country.
I like it, but I don't think it's his best.
I like it, I don't love it. But better than I remember.
Complete genius. Pretty much the easiest 5* ever.
