‘tame’- less kind to my ears first thing in the morning… ‘Wave of Mutilation’ on the other hand… ‘Here Comes your Man’ makes me feel nostalgic! It feels like pop- mind you, in the nineties I thought Radiohead was an appropriately jolly band to play at a party, so what do I know?! ‘monkey Gone to Heaven’- very familiar! And, one of the best songs about a monkey. ‘la la Love you’- I like the fact that there’s no ambiguity about the lyrics. I do love the noisy riffs, and tuneful melody combo.
I really love this album. It is like being Cleopatra and getting into a lovely warm bath of milk (Tigermilk).
I really enjoyed listening to this! I love ‘I got a Woman’- great track. It does get the hips moving- even on a Sunday morning! You can imagine that this must have been scandalous for fifties ‘dads’ whose teenage daughters were listening to it!
Coming back to Dolly, I feel less judgemental of sentimentality! I love "Coat of Many Colours" and "The Way I See You." The lyrics of "If I lose My Mind" makes you sit up and listen, particularly considering this was released in 1971.
‘Love Me’ and ‘The Great Divide’ are the stand out tracks! The rest: meh. Searing, incisive commentary, I know...

What can I say? I tried, but it is just not my thing. I once went to a jazz club in Budapest (Beth will remember this!) and thought maybe it was a turning point for me on my musical pathway, but it was just a cul-de-sac…
I really enjoyed listening to this album! I knew ‘Headache’ but not the other songs. I’ll definitely return to this one.
I really like this- psychedelic and medieval! I found the rhymes and lyrics in ‘Bert’s Blues’ particularly pleasing!! ‘season of the witch’- rivals ‘Monster Mash’ as a great Halloween tune. ‘breezes of Patchouli’- great title! This song really appeals to me: ‘Darkness of my mind…’ ‘Museum’- also loved this!
‘shoot to thrill’- hyper-masculine lyrics. Unpleasant to modern sensibilities. ‘What do you do for Money’- once you hear the misogyny, you can’t escape it. ‘givin the dog a bone’ is the icing on the cake. I didn’t listen to any more of this. How, even from a musical point of view, can this be considered one of the best albums of the past sixty years? How can the lyrics be extricated from the musicality? Ugh.
I found this ok, but maybe a little too much over breakfast. When it got to ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’ I was hoping for an ABBA cover…
I liked this and would definitely listen again!
So happy to hear this!!! It was fortuitous that it was delivered on a Sunday morning!
Very eighties! Smooth operator- I always thought it was someone who connected telephone lines…
Despite Van being a dick, I love this album soooo much! I have so many lovely memories attached to this album, especially the song ‘Into the Mystic.’
I really enjoyed listening to this album-very familiar yet just before my time.
Loved Novocaine for the Soul and Susan’s House- the big singles!
A great album for Christmas Day!
I had never heard of this band or artist before so it was, for me, a new discovery. I think the beauty of this album is in his voice, which has such an impressive range.
I enjoyed this for about twenty minutes before it all got a bit samey… it is obviously an influential album though so I’m glad I listened to it.
This is our Hogmanay listening! I really enjoyed this and have added it to my playlist. I can’t believe I’ve never listened to it before.
Well, this album starts with a bang! If it starts with a primal scream, where will it go? This is an album worth a second listen.
I found this strangely disappointing- I wanted it to be more than it is.
An album from my university days! I loved listening to this again! It seemed so familiar, yet it is old. I can’t help but think it is timeless in its melodies and smart lyrics.
I ‘discovered’ this when I was 19 and at university and it quickly became my favourite album. Listening to it again (as I do often!), it is layered with memory. I love ‘A Case of You,’ which appeals to my romantic sensibility, the meaning in the lyrics evolving over time. ‘Carey’- wonderful instrumentality, poetic lyrically. ‘Blue’- ‘songs are like tattoos’- aren’t they just?
I think I need to listen to this again. On first listen, I thought it was a bit dull. For aficionados, that must be a shocking statement! I enjoyed listening to Dangermouse, a mashup of Jay z and the Beatles.
Very funky- very listenable ! Everyday People and Stand! We’re my favourites!
I loved Fiona Apple in the nineties and I didn’t expect this album to be a Tidal 2. I expected it to be more grown up. I loved the humorous irony in the lyrics and in particular the hilarious lyrics on ‘Rack of His’. I think it definitely warrants another listen as I get the feeling that like Tidal, there’s always something new to discover. It’s called ‘Fetch the Boltcutters’ - a pithy command of ever I heard one and once she’s unleashed, Fiona doesn’t hold back and I love that!!
If you don’t listen to the lyrics, this is an incredible, multi-dimensional album with such creative sound. But, I hate the lyrics. Can you separate the dancer from the dance?
I really enjoyed this album . Great lyrics.
This is nostalgia in an album! I love everything about it- Stipe’s voice, his lyrics and the sound. Radio Free Europe is a brilliant tune.
I wanted to like this and maybe I would if it was on in the background?
This is like listening to one’s brain deconstruct.
I missed this when it came out so it was great to see what all the fuss was about.
The issue here is Eric Clapton being a lunatic. It does make you hear ‘Sunshine of your love’ and wonder what the hell happened to him during the intervening years. This is- musically- a brilliant album but my enjoyment of it was hampered by Eric’s views that the planet has been hypnotised into getting vaccinated.
I didn’t listen to it all, but I enjoyed the dramatic gothic sound!
This has lots of familiar songs on it. It makes me feel nostalgic, but with a more critical ear, it is pretty bland rock.
This is so much better and enjoyable than I expected!!!
I actually find her voice a bit overwrought and I can’t listen to it all in one go. It lacks subtlety and nuance in the sound, but you can’t deny that she’s a good song writer. I’d probably prefer to listen to Kraftwerk than this.
What can I say? This was an absolute joy to listen to!
Listened to this twice and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Old fashioned but so enjoyable! It took me back to watching Calamity Jane as a kid!
This requires a second listen.
Great voice and I loved the big songs like Bad Moon Rising!
I didn’t know this album at all. My knowledge of the Beach Boys begins and ends with Pet Sounds. I really liked this album- it seemed so familiar. I can totally hear where Belle and Sebastian get their sound. Those Harmonies…
Fabulous and so nostalgic for me. I remember seeing Blur perform Park Life on The Word!
I LOVE Teenage Fanclub. That is all I can say. From the minute I put this on, to the minute it is over, it is such a genuine pleasure.
A good album with some real classics!
This was ok, but I prefer Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday… This probably deserves another listen!
Energetic and fun! I enjoyed this a lot!
Ol’ blue eyes is a brilliant crooner and has a mellifluous voice, but I find listening to this like being in a lift in an enormous hotel and it is going nowhere really slowly.
I really love this album. It is like being Cleopatra and getting into a lovely warm bath of milk (Tigermilk).
