The Modern Lovers
The Modern LoversI've heard this album a few times in my life and I always forget it's from the '70s. It seems newer than that. I feel like it grows on me the more I hear it. 4/5.

I discovered the Arctic Monkeys in college, which is when I started getting really into indie music/music blogs. This album has some nostalgia attached to it for me but I really like it.
I am very much a hip-hop newbie (especially since I was a whole 2 years old when this album came out) so I am not very good yet at articulating what I like about different albums. I am really enjoying this one though, I recognized a few of the songs so I must have heard them I passing. I think my favorite part is the jazzy instrumentation behind a lot of the songs, especially the bass.
I have never heard of Miriam Makeba before today, and I was really enjoying the first half of this album, but I think the tracks in Xhosa are a lot better than the ones in English. I'd probably put this one as a 3 but I'll have to dig deeper on her as I was really liking a few of the tracks.
I first attempted to listen to this while reading through some training for work and that was not working out. I can definitely see how this album was very influential to later punk and post-punk bands. I don't know if it's something I would go out of my way to listen to a lot but I'm glad I heard it. I also had the chance to listen to it with the lyrics from Apple Music turned on and I think that helped. I'd probably give this one a 3.5. I will probably round up in my official rating on the website.
Unfortunately, reggae in general is not really my thing. I thought this was fine, I definitely know why people like it and that it's a classic, but I'm not the right audience for it. I'd give it a 3 but that's 100% because of me and not really because there's anything wrong with the music.
I love this album. I can definitely feel Nick Drake's influence on a lot of my favorite bands.
I think this might be my favorite Flaming Lips album (though Soft Bulletin and At War with the Mystics are also up there).
I love Janelle Monae, not sure if ArchAndroid or Dirty Computer is my favorite of theirs. Could this probably be a few songs shorter? Yes. Still a 5 from me though.
Yeah... I am not connecting to this at all. I usually like weird voices but this was grating. I liked the beep boop part of the second song and most of "On Some Faraway Beach" but was not a fan of the rest.
I have never heard this album all the way through, though when listening there were a lot of individual songs I recognized. I was losing steam towards the end though... I think this album was a bit too long to hold my attention all the way through. Lots of classics though!
I think in terms of influence and significance to music history, this is definitely a 5/5. I terms of personal enjoyment... I think I agree that these songs weren't really meant to be played back to back. I enjoyed each of the songs but I found them to be a little same-y.
I had this one on my personal list that I started about a year ago. I gave it a 3 at the time, and I think I will probably keep that rating. I enjoyed this a lot and I love listening to music written in languages other than English, but I haven't been able to connect with it yet. Maybe I'll need to do some research on the band and listen a few more times.
Love Fiona! 5/5
I had never heard of this band or album before today and techno/house is not usually my genre.... That being said I really enjoyed this and would listen to it again in the right circumstances. 4/5.
This was another one I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about and ended up liking it a lot! 4/5.
There are still a lot of Bob Dylan albums I haven't heard yet, although this one I am familiar with. Like a Rolling Stone and Desolation Row are two of my favorites. I'd give this one a 4/5 as it's not my favorite Dylan album I've heard so far (which is Freewheelin') but it's definitely a great album.
This era of hard rock music does nothing for me, there wasn't anything inherently bad about it, I just didn't enjoy it. Maybe a 2.5/5.
So... unpopular opinion time: I don't like Michael Jackson. I also have a hard time separating art from the artist so I'm not sure if I could fully enjoy this album even if I did like his music better. Perhaps fittingly, I like this album better than Bad which I got a while ago in my personal list, but I am not a fan.
...Are there any hip hop albums from this era/on this list that don't have a song/verse/etc on them about how women are "bitches"? I'm very tired of it. The rest of this album was...fine. I will get off my soapbox now, lol.
I am a newbie when it comes to jazz and I realize that the albums I like in the genre tend to lean more towards vocal jazz as I'm usually a lyric person. But not knowing much about how groundbreaking this was in its time, I like this; it makes me feel a bit like I'm in a fancy hotel in a Christmas movie. ...Also I think the upright bass might be my favorite instrument. Out of context and historical significance I'd give this a 3.5/5.
I've listened to this album a few times but I feel like I don't usually think about it afterwards. I decided to give it an active listen today instead of using it as background noise... ...I need to add it to my regular rotation because I thought it was great. It's not a perfect album but I would happily rate it a 4/5.
I wasn't expecting to like today's album as I don't love most country, but I thought his voice was good and I enjoyed a lot of the lyrics. I probably wouldn't seek this out by I'm glad I heard it. 3.5.
Oof... I forgot how good this album was. Not only are the lyrics wonderfully dark, but the violin throughout a lot of the songs just enhances it. My second 5/5 in a row this week.
I'm pretty sure the only 2 Cyndi Lauper songs I knew before I listened to this album were Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time After Time. This was a lot of fun, though I'm not sure I would listen again as a full album, but I might pull out a single every once in a while. 3/5 for me today.
I'm having trouble rating this one as well because I'm just not very familiar with the genre. I was also having some trouble finding it on Apple Music (managed to find a playlist on YouTube but I'm not 100% sure it was the whole album). I definitely liked the sounds, especially the drums in a few of the songs. I'm giving it a 3/5 based on personal enjoyment but he seems like a very influential musician and I should probably do more research, lol.
I liked this album quite a bit, though I think it started to get a bit tedious towards the end (definitely a me problem, I tend to get bored when songs go for too long). Like some others mentioned above, I think my favorite off the album was Washer. 4/5.
I've heard this album a few times in my life and I always forget it's from the '70s. It seems newer than that. I feel like it grows on me the more I hear it. 4/5.
This one was unfortunately just not for me. It was also much too long. I do really like the cover art though.
I finally got a chance to listen to Arise. I like it more than I expected to. The guitars and drums are good but I am just not a big fan of this style of vocals. This one gets a 3/5 from me.
I like a lot of the Cure albums that come after this one, but this didn't really do much for me. Maybe I will need to give it a few more listens to re-asses but this is currently sitting around a 3-3.5.
That was a lovely way to spend 30 minutes.
I really liked the Michael Kiwanuka album as well, I'd heard of him for a long time but I don't think I've ever listened to him before. 4/5.
I listened to today's album today at work when I was starting to lose energy and it definitely helped pick me back up a little. This wasn't the greatest punk album I've ever heard but I enjoyed it, 3/5.
Yeah... I love this album. I wouldn't say it's the greatest album of the 90's, but I give it a solid 4/5. I hadn't listened to it in a while and I enjoyed getting to revisit it today.
I realized today I don't know most of the songs off of this album except for Glory Box and I think one other. I like this one a lot too! I think both yesterday's album and today's were very different but I'd gladly listen to either again.
I liked this. I definitely preferred the acoustic songs to the more rock-oriented ones. 4/5 would definitely listen to more.
Thanks, I hate it!
Sorry guys, I didn't like the Faith No More album. I can understand why people would like it, but the singer's voice really wasn't for me.
I enjoyed this one. I don't speak Spanish or know very much about latin music but it was definitely a fun dance break in the middle of my work day as my energy was starting to fade. I think I'd give this one a 3-3.5/5.
The album itself is a 5/5 but Win Butler ruined it for me.
So I'm not the biggest Beatles fan in the world, I like them fine I just never connected with them on a deep personal level like a lot of people do. That being said I think this album collectively is one of my favorites of theirs. I agree with everyone above that the last track (Run For Your Life) is my least favorite but I like everything else. 4/5.
I had an ex in college I feel like would be really into this chemical brothers album. I can definitely see it being danceable but I thought it kind of dragged as it went on. 3/5.
Well, I got through most of it but it really wasn't for me. I think I can see why some people would like this though. 2/5.
I admit I liked this more than I expected to... but I felt like a lot of the lyrics were a bit corny. I'd give this a 2.5/5.
