Not for me tbh. Too british
Great song! Wait, wtf, this is an album?
stroking my shit rn. 4.5/5
I listened to the first half or so. Clocks good
This is really fucking ugly so far but I really like the guitar lines on Albatross. Almost hypnotic. The Suit is standard punk subject matter but it sounds as boring as what it’s describing and it works. Most other songs I checked out of tbh. I I’ve never heard a Sex Pistols or PIL album prior to this so I don’t have a reference point but this was alright.
A lot of the songs themselves feel sort of aimless, and even with some great string sections I can’t help but feel like something’s missing. Bjork’s delivery is very drawn out which takes away from the drive that this album could’ve had. And tbh it’s hard for my ADHD ass to stay engaged when she sings about her breakup at a third of the pace that even most pop singers manage. But her voice is still great and the strings are beautiful. Still very worth a listen. Homogenic and Vespertine are still obviously better but I’d say this is around the level of Biophilia, which I’d much recommend if you haven’t heard before.
Favs: Stonemilker, Quicksand
Much better than today’s talentless “mumbo” rappers. Bring back that old-school hippity hip-hop! #thewesthasfallen
Vibes I think. No lyrics in rock songs is always kind of a turn off for me but I’m kind of grateful for it here since the guy’s voice is really pathetic and annoying. But it’s funny so I’ll give it a pass. I really don’t like how all the drums are panned to the right the entire time. It’s really distracting and grating after a while. Nevermind, it’s not really vibes
This album SOUNDS like Adult Swim. It’d probably be a 5 for me if some songs were extended a little bit. Jethro, Where I’m Going, Inferno, the title track. All of them sound like they still have some steam in them but get prematurely cut short before they can really go somewhere. I don’t mind if it gets the run time to over an hour. I saw Thundercat live and he knows how to do a solo. Hell, it can go to 2 hours and I still wouldn’t mind that much.
I’m just gonna rate it as close as I can to the average since I didn’t listen the whole way through. I’ve been exposed to this album’s hits ever since I first listened to the radio, and I gained a newfound appreciation for Rolling in the Deep and Rumour Has It after actually paying attention to the lyrics. Both great songs imo. I stopped at Set Fire To the Rain and I still don’t really care for it. I never really fucked with Adele too much, but I’m glad that most of the hits actually deserved to be hits.
Nothing crazy, I didn’t really pay attention to the lyrics, but I didn’t mind it when it was on. I liked Paul Weller’s voice.
Most 60s music generally hasn’t aged too well. Mainly, most songs that got any sort of radio play were under 3 minutes, and as a result I feel most of them are over before they’re fully realized. That’s why I never really fucked with The Beatles or The Beach Boys. Simon and Garfunkel run into the same problem, and it’s unfortunate since I like Sound of Silence. It sounds pretty nice, I don’t mind it when it’s on, but I don’t think I’ll ever revisit it.
Very happy to have heard this the whole way through for the first time. Classic.
Timbaland and Missy Elliott MIGHT just be a better duo than Timbaland and AI Biggie.
I’m surprisingly unfamiliar with Bob Dylan’s discography, but after Highway 61 I know I need to do some digging. Like a Rolling Stone is genius and Ballad of a Thin Man is also a classic. I also appreciate how most songs are longer than 4 minutes. It really avoids the pitfall that most 60s albums suffered from of not being fleshed out enough.
While most were extremely positive, I just wanted to provide a response of sorts against some of the more critical reviews, to put it lightly. There are some who disapprove of the sex and violence Kendrick portrays on this record, as well as his frequent usage of “bitch”. I understand why they’re offended, and as a big rap fan, even though I’ve just had to accept it to a degree, it’s still very justifiably off putting to so many.
However, while I can’t say for certain, seeing as most of the reviews seem to come from after a first listen, these complaints arise from a very surface-level understanding of the album. People hear guns, dick-measuring, and drug use and jump to conclusions about this album’s message and moral character. But that could not be further from the truth. good kid, mAAd city is a complete indictment of the gang violence, hypersexuality and addiction that he was surrounded by growing up in Compton. That’s the reason why all his friends die on the track mAAd city, why he mourns on Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst, and why he turns to Jesus to cleanse his sins. Real is the realization that being gangsta isn’t what should make him a man, but rather, being there for his loved ones and giving up on the greed and hatred that his peers pressured him into.
Yes, this album is violent and misanthropic in its subject matter. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. At no point on this album does Kendrick talk down on his listeners or come off as preachy. Were this album just “gangs bad” or “drugs bad” without going into detail on exactly why, it would be extremely patronizing. Kendrick Lamar is better than that. And not to mention these beats are great, and Kendrick’s flow and lyricism are exactly on point. Absolutely one of the best rappers of today, if not of all time.
I’ll put wires in your jaw like Kanye
Super fucking chill. Very nearly a 5 for me
I have now acquired a taste for freeform jazz.
I’ve studied with this on in the background multiple times, and I loved it every time.
I wish listening to MBDTF didn’t financially contribute to Ye with all the bullshit he spews on the daily, even if it is just fractions of a cent on streaming. Because this album really is amazing. Power and All Of The Lights will forever be unreal bangers. Runaway will still manage to make me cry 10 years from now. Lost in the World is beautiful, powerful and soulful. Ye and his collaborators (except maybe Jay-Z) did an excelllent job portraying the lows that they still face at the top of the world. The isolation, the lack of loyalty, the ridiculous expectations. The production is obviously stellar as well. If you can put aside your reservations about Kanye West the man, you’ll find that Kanye West the artist’s greatest work is one of the best albums of the 21st century.
I was pretty indifferent to much of this album. I found it pretty repetitive and it blended into the background. But I do appreciate how it made the effort to at least explain traditional Indian music to western audiences. Even if I don’t revisit it, this was still a very valuable look into a culture that I as an American never really interacted with.
I feel like I’m missing something honestly. I need to give this especially another listen. I want to love this the same way all the critics do. I wanna understand why this is the new t-shirt album.
I need to give this another listen. I feel as if there’s still much more to unpack. Great listen, soothing, intimate, yet somewhat chilling. We lost Nick Drake way too soon. To anyone reading this who’s struggling: it does get better. Your problems are likely temporary, but suicide is permanent. Save yourself, and love yourself today, right now.
Some cool stuff, a lot of plodding around. I respect The Fall much more than I like them. I get they’re super influential within post-punk, and most of my favorite music today most likely wouldn’t exist were it not for them, but this isn’t anything to go super crazy for. It’s alright. I might revisit it but for now my opinion stands.
Super solid jazz album! Miles Davis is considered a legend for a reason.
I see so much of this album’s DNA in experimental music today. That said, this was an exhausting listen by the end of it. I think I’m not gonna revisit this one for a while.
I’M NOT HERE
I’M NOT HEEEEEEEEEERE
If it weren’t so noisy it would be a very boring pop album. Instead it’s boring AND painful to listen to 😍
This isn’t one of my favorites ever but I know that if I was there when this dropped it would’ve blown my mind. Helter Skelter is awesome, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Revolution 9. On the cusp of rounding up to a 5.
