Abbey Road
BeatlesOne of the greatest classic albums of all time.
One of the greatest classic albums of all time.
Not a heavy-ish metal fan, but you can't go wrong with Smoke in the Water anytime. This is Deep Purples best song by far. The final four tracks starting with Smoke.... improve upon the first four tracks which left me "meh".
Didn't like The Police 40 years ago ... and now I recall why. While Incan't speak for the technical point of view, from an interest perspective, this album is crap. Still don't like The Police.
All songs sounded basically alike. Uninspiring even though some songs dance beat was ok. Not my thing
No fear ... this album is crap. Nothing worth listening to as it is an expression of personal beliefs. If 0 rating available that would still be too high
One of the greatest classic albums of all time.
Nothing special. No tracks particularly stood out.
Electro-funk ... not interesting sound and the lyrics make no sense.
The band's charisma seems to explode despite not yet really achieving stardom. Keith Moon's drums are a standout. The entire album, lyrically and musically, sounds like a group nearly ready for big time.
While not a fan of electronic music, the arrangements by Gregory along with Goldfrapps alluring vocals are surprisingly enjoyable. Listening to the songs brings me back to the old torch songs with an updated sound. I can hear the theme songs of Sean Connery as James Bond and envision the sultry tones/movements of Marlene Dietrich. Overall a pleasant listening experience.
Listened to only one song .... Glory.. The remainder of the songs I blocked due to explicit content which I chose to restrict.
Liked Nilsson's work back in the 70s, but not enough to purchase anything. Feel the same way still...interesting to listen to, enjoyable s well, but mostly because if his uniqueness.
Traditional African style beats mixed with some rock and roll crested an enjoyable listen ...
Uninteresting... unenjoyable music
Sounds like typical UK popular music ... relatively uninteresting since I prefer lyrics that tell the story. Bottom line ... not my cup of tea and generally boring music. Lots of electronic noise with an occasional break in the pattern for a ballad/soft rock attempt.
Enjoyed listening to classic Byrds harmonies. Despite having only a few big hits, their sound was unmistakable and pleasant to listen to today. My fave would be their folk-rock collaborations and their toe-dipping into country-rock with Gram Parsons.
Right in my wheelhouse....soft rock, great lyrics with a heavy dose of folk to complete the set. One of the best ever duos.
Eliminated by choice all songs with explicit content. Of the songs I heard, I'd give the rating a zero if I could. A "1" rating implies there might be hope for this music ... which is not the case. Cannot Realistically Accept Poor (CRAP) music.
Early sounds unpolished but potential is visible. They make the jump between hard rock and more softened rock easily. That said, still not a great album compared to layer works by the group.
Cash is a true legend, and maybe singlehandedly kept country music alive in America. That said, he transcended nearly all genres. This album is a terrific compilation of covers for the most part with only a couple exceptions. The tones of the newer cuts are hauntingly beautiful and feel as if Cash knew his time performing was nearly up ... and perhaps his life also. I was left wishing I'd heard "Streets of Laredo" sung by him when he was young ... and hoping I never again heard his rendition of Roberta Flack's "First Time I Ever Saw Your Face". This album seems a fitting tribute to his legend and also a soulful goodbye to his mortal life.
Not really a funk or disco fan, but to me many of the songs on this album seemed to me to be based in soft or light jazz which I do enjoy. The tones were smooth and enjoyable...the lyrics not so much. Overall, pretty nice listen.
One of the best bands of the 70s hard rock era, this album is all over the place....in a good way. We can hear the strength of the band in the diversity of music contained in the album. I never heard much beyond the commercial hits of Led Zeppelin, and no one tires of the classic Stairway to Heaven. so getting acquainted in this album with the gentler rock and folk side was unexpected but enjoyable. This is a really strong album.
This album has a very smooth tone with a melding of light jazz and smooth rock. I also think I hear some background African beats in a fee of the songs, but the jazz overrides. I know the reviews indicate a rock and soul vibe but I don't hear it as much as I hear the soft jazz tones. Very easy to listen and enjoyable all through the song list.
My first thought listening to this album is they tried to mimic the success of a large band similar to Chicago from the 70s forward. Unfortunately neither their "sound", vocals, nor their songs were particular inspiring. Easy to see that why they were not very successful which in no way says they weren't talented. I suspect they are talented musicians but beyond playing their instruments they lack the vision to create a uniqueness that could differentiate themselves from the rest of the wanna-bes.
I loved the Mamas and Papas as a teen and still love their sound. Cass Elliot's voice was so pure she could carry the group. They were a power group with fantastic soft rock sounds that still resonate well today.
The best album of The Beatles early period (aka before Rubber Soul). Really can hear the progression from the very early bubblegum pop (I Want to Hold Your Hand; Love Me Do) to broader, deeper, rock and ballads. Fantastic to hear the writing of only John and Paul and see their growth over the early days. It's always been EITHER the Beatles or the Rolling Stones .... two groups, two totally different talents and styles. I don't begrudge the Stones fans, but the Beatles are my choice by miles.
Folk music is one if my favorite genres, and within the genre, American, Celtic, and Scottish would be my go-to listens. Unfortunately, my hope for this album was never realized. Folk music often sounds similar song-to-song, and the transitions on this album were somewhat unexciting. Sandy Denny does a very nice job but the songs left me flat rather than inspired with the exception of 'Percy's song' which was written by Bob Dylan.
Was familiar with the band by name, but not its music. Understand why .... does nothing for me. Rendition of Simon & Garfunkle's "America's is junk.
Not a fan. Lyrics seem pointless and not in sync with the rhythms. Move on. Cannot believe this album is highly rated.
I was looking forward to this album when I saw it pop up ... but was frankly disappointed. The continuous reaches to his falsetto or screeching voices was irritating. I think he was better suited for folk or ballads with his haunting singing voice, but you have to wonder why his songs are so dark and despairing.
I bought this album when it was released. Bought it again when life moved to CDs. It's been on my streaming playlist for years now. One of the greatest duo groups of all time and this album is the culmination of their prodigious talent both individually and together. The poetry of Paul Simon's writing and the diversity of the song genres is classic. A great album by artists at their prime!!
Liked Randy Newman for his comedic novelty songs and musical scores, but was not aware of this album. Good Old Boys is an anthology of the American Songbook that we Americans would like to sweep under the rug. An all too poignant look at American history through the clear eyes of a poet willing to expose the uncomfortable truths.
Not sure why this album gets any attention at all, and do not understand it's critical acclaim. Senseless guitar noise with monotonous vocal trash. Garage band that needed to stay in the garage with the doors closed and the car running.
The music by itself is quite enjoyable... intoxicating almost. The lyrics of many songs are also often interesting, but the combining of the two just seems completely out of sync with each other resulting in a boring and mundane listening experience.
Steely Dan's jazzy and soft tones sound as good today as they did in the 70s. The group is both commercially and technically successful but I think their claim to fame is their sound is not duplicated by other bands. They are simply pleasant and easy to listen to without sounding redundant. Thank goodness for their music instead of the electronic and punk rock pretenders out there who just jam and scream making noise rather than making music.
While I like the blues, I just can't get excited about this album or others like this. After about 15 minutes (2 songs), I'm ready to take a nap. Clearly others love this ... but not me. 2/5
I think the genre is mislabeled --- should be junk rock, not punk rock. I'd give it 0/5 if I could. Quit after tracks 1 - 3.
Not bad as punk rock goes ... until you get to track 4 or 5 or 6... Same anti-establishment theme in every song and nearly the same tune. BORING as crap!! 2/5
Hard rock band with social themes... pretty interesting listen. 3/5
All I CAN say is: * CANNOT figure out the genre * CANNOT understand the lyrics * CANNOT say I liked it or disliked it I'd had enough when the COLOGUARD advert came on to end it. 1.5 / 5
Not my genre. After half the album the novelty wore off. 2/5
I vascillate with jazz. I like background music with smooth/soft jazz, containing nice rhythms and sweet tunes. But then I listen to this and hear perhaps a technically superior album that sounds like musicians just jamming in their own heads and realize I really dislike this style. 1 / 5
NOT a big soul fan, but this is Aretha. Great album of Aretha in her prime.
Not a punk fan generally, but this album moves away from the the screaming, whining "rage against society" typical punk. As such, while still not my genre, Joy Division showed musical talent and I found this to be a reasonably enjoyable listen. 3/5
Fortunately I had no access to this music in the late 80s. At least each song sounds different compared to most alt-rock bands, but still not for me. 2/5
Surprisingly interesting listen despite the redundant lyrics that typify this genre. 3/5
The rhythms are intriguing but the lyrics become boring song to song. All in all, seemed to be a relaxed listening experience as background tunes.
Second album of the Pixies ... Bossanova was worse than Doolittle ... Stupid lyrics and mic screaming. Waste of time. 1/5
Musical production and composition of ABC is really nice, but the lyrics seem forced and sub -standard for a group this interesting. On whole however, when I tune out the lyrics I like what they've created. 4/5
Classic Springsteen with solid lyrics covered by his gruff, unimpressive voice. BUT...you simply cannot help feeling good after listening to his music so who the hell cares about the technicalities! 4 / 5
Decent band, but do not understand the rating system unless it's a sub-sub-sub-sub genre. Nothing special about these guys.
It's so refreshing to hear an artist write and sing songs that would appeal to Brandon Carlisle, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmy Lou Harris etc. Fold comparisons to Dylan and Townes Van Zandt may be a slight stretch, but Lucinda's songwriting and singing is terrific. I live the fact that she's not sounding (or being made to sound) like Taylor Swift!! 4 / 5
Not really my genre, but that said the listening experience was OK. The music was creative in that all the songs didn't sound alike. But, not something I'd enjoy listening to frequently. 2/5
My third Pixies album ...still don't like their music.
Smooth blend of pop and various rock genres. Pretenders are easy to listen to. Chrissy Hynde's lyrics are generally well constructed and meaningful with very nice productions. 4 / 5
The reggae beat gets old after a few songs as does the constant oppression style lyrics. I'm just not into this artist or his music. 1/5
Easy listening blend of soft jazz and pop. Fantastic album, and have enjoyed this band for years. Always a smooth listening experience. 4 / 5
Violet Femmes more folk/country songs I enjoyed, but the rest not so much. Gotta go with 2/5.
The Louvin Brothers are country music royalty like the Munroe Brothers but probably not heard by many of the people. Their influence is unmistakable but I think other artists were the recipient if their skills more than the Louvin's. I also think their appeal will be a thin slice of the listeners in 1001 albums but it doesn't diminish their impact. 4/5
I have a love - hate relationship with the blues, and this album feeds that polarized relationship. The Thrill is Gone is a classic but How Blue Can You Get just drones on and on. Figured out that I don't like electric guitar jamming!!! Gotta go with 2/5 despite recognizing the fabulous talent of B.B. King.
Meh...not bad but not exciting either. 2/5
Dusty's voice is unmistakable and it's hard to tell who does sultry better ...... her or Better Miller. Loved Dusty's cover of Spooky where she drops a little signal re: her sexuality. Of course her top hits are always nice to hear, but this album was very enjoyable all around. 4/5
Just not the song selections for me. 1/5
Transformational music by the G.O.A.T. band of the mid rock and roll era.
Transformational music by the G.O.A.T. band of the mid-rock and roll era. Simply the best.
Havn't really paid much attention to Coldplay in the past, so this album was good for me to get acquainted with them. Thought their voices were OK, their lyrics OK, but the synthesis of the music, lyrics, and voices exceeded my expectations. Will be paying more attention going forward. 4/5
Always preferred The Beatles to the Stones, but still enjoyed many of the Stone's songs. This album seems like a compilation of those songs I liked. The Stones, correctly so, didn't try to copy the Beatles sound. This independence, and their longevity, has given them the recognition the deserve as one of rock's most influential and recognized bands. 4/5
Can't deny the R&B influence, nor the talent on the guitar despite not liking all the jamming. Nonetheless, his legacy was stunted by his drug use and death. There is a lot of be said for the longevity of your work which Hendrix doesn't have, so ultimately his greatness is diminished by his flash in the pan existence. 3/5
Like some songs, don't like some songs. Generally not a fan of their music. 1.5 / 5
Not my genre. Numerous songs not heard due to explicit lyrics which I choose not to listen.
Have always like Dire Straits music. They had a different sound than other bands of the era with Knopfler's voice leading the way. The band offered a pleasant alternative to the screamers of punk and metal where you could just relax to comfortable beats and enjoyable lyrics. 5/5
Was aware of VU but like most everyone else, couldn't name their songs. Nonetheless, VU was a pleasant listening experience although I'd likely not purchase anything. 2/5
One of the best rock n roll bands ever. Unique sound and terrific lyrics. 5/5
Had not heard this band. Interesting listen, but not sure how much I like them at this point, but the music grows in you. 3/5
What can you say .... while maybe not technically great musically, she's arguably the greatest female pop marketer of all time and certainly in the top 3 with Beyonce and Taylor Swift. Her music is easy to listen to and her impact on the pop genre is unmistakable. 5/5
Doesn't do anything for me ... not my genre. That said, much more interesting than other punk/dance bands. 2/5
Didn't really know what Gothic Rock was, so this was a new listening experience. Don't create much for the dark, negtive/morbid lyrics but the beats were OK. 2/5
There is no way in hell this crap is one of the 1001 most influential albums of all time. Pure waste of time to listen to this crap. 00000/5
Have never heard of, nor heard this band's music prior to 1001... Music was pleasant to listen to but I cannot determine why their review indicates they were so groundbreaking. Pretty "meh" to me....nothing special to set them apart from the myriad of other bands that sound like them. 3/5
One of the Iconic bands of the late 1900s and early 2000s. 5/5
Not a big punk guy, but Green Day is the exception. Good lyrics, smooth beats instead of screaming guitars, percussion, and vocals. One if the best. 4/5
Not bad, not great. 2/5
I expected this to be a polarizing album between the soulful balladeers who like sweet lyrics and gentle chords vs the hard screaming junkies who want loud instrument noise with screaming singers of 3 word lyrics for 7 minutes. Album sounds (and is) very dated 80s, but Raitt's smooth tones fit well with the mellow moods. 1001 albums ranking is a joke, but this album is a easy listen and one of the original fusion albums of rock and blues with blues taking the lead. Throw in a little country tones s well and you get 5/5 rating.
Just not into David Bowie's music. I can accept his influence and legacy but do not enjoy listening. 2/5
I really like Apple's more jazz focused work as opposed to her rock efforts. The jazz genre seems perfect fit for her style with lots of creativity on which she can focus. Nothing wrong with staying in a narrower lane. Give her 3/5 overall with 5/5 within the sultry and jazziest melodies.
One of our greatest modern poets. Like so many lyricists, his poetry translated easily to music an songwriting. 5/5
Very "meh" about their music. Like some, but uninspired by most. 2/5
By choice, I don't listen to explicit content. 0/5
Just cannot get interested in this stuff. 1/5
Might be rated as a great album by the experts, but is crap to me 1/5
One of the greatest of all time. 5/5
