I know much better in this genre who haven’t gotten near the recognition, have written many more songs with much better melodies; that don’t scream self pity, and are a far greater service to the world. 2.1mil monthly listeners on spotify is mind boggling.

One great song (Angels), the best cover of a blues standard (Hard) ever done for that song, a couple other better than average southern rock songs and a couple ho-hums.

Could never get past the guitar style to listen to this band. His signature play-style is what I imagine repetitive water drop torture to the brain would be like. They are actually only one of three artists I permanently blocked from all my streaming services. Disappointing to see this album generated this morning.

Good southern rock Jam. My favorite Allman, Duane, died far to young. But this is a good blues jam.
Guy needed some emotional help. Lyrics obviously coming from a dark place. Hard to listen to. Unfortunately his help never came in a form that could save him. Music reflects a severely tortured individual. Felt sorrow listening to this.

Remind me a lot of a band i really love, Oh Wonder. Xx’s vocals a more present than ethereal than Oh Wonder with the occasional use of 808 drums.
Like the R&B influence in the music and the music in general including the top line melodies and rhymes. Just not as fond of the vocal tonality.
I like other renditions of his songs, well one song, Hallelujah. Not as moved by his performances as I am by his songwriting.
Very musical hard rock album. Live performance inspired. Seamless fusion with symphony. Singer’s lower tenor voice worked perfectly with the highs of the violins. Unique listening experience.
Saved the entire album to my library after only hearing to the halfway mark of the first song. I usually need to listen through multiple times. I’m highly selective of what makes it in there. If asking why..I have no answer for that. The feeling induced by Nixon by Lambchop is ineffable. Which is how art should be I guess. One of my faults is the need to explain everything too much. For a person with many words this album left me speechless.
Great for dance. Techno arrangements but with a slight blend of some classic R&B/Jazz feel eg Earth Wind Fire…albeit a small influence it’s enough for me to enjoy it
Obviously some highly passionate songwriters/performers with high level musical chops. On a personal level I much prefer their guitar and string based arrangements like other ELP albums over Tarkus. The arrangement here is ALL keys…pianos and primitive synths.
He’s widely acknowledged as the King for a reason. His early records on this album are examples of why. Youthful exuberance, incredible vocal chops from singing in gospel church his entire childhood, kinesthetic awareness…he was more than ready to be in the right moment in R&R history. Perfect
What can be said about the artists that wrote thee seminal jam song that every, I mean every, high school garage band played at one time. Prior to having the chops to play ‘Stairway To Heaven’, which came second, the first one learned was always, ‘Smoke on the Water’. Like most jam bands, DP likes to beat the heck out of the same riffs for days..so don’t expect a lot of changes/B sections in their songs.
If you’re a fan of well conceived song intros, you’ll love this album….especially tracks 1 and 9. Rubin is one of my favorite producers. He knows how to catch magic as my artist son would say. This is their best and last (as the death of a founder, Ward, occurred a month prior to release) collaborative effort.
Wow I just don’t get it. Nonsensical lyrics. Though there is a decent melody sense here it isn’t made special by mundane arrangements. Voice is pleasant enough. So far, out of all the albums I’ve heard on this 1001 list, this one’s critical acclaim is the most surprising. Again, I just don’t get this one.
Hard listening. Trebles in the mix are overwhelming. Need a little more soulful influence in my music…non-existent here.
Full disclosure..I’m biased about anything S&G put out as I experienced their 1981 reunion tour as a teenager not knowing what to expect. The music that day was propelled by the energy and enthusiasm of a half million others excited to see the duo reunite after a ten year animus-filled break. They were wonderful together again and expressed their appreciation not only for the turnout but for each other throughout the show. After that I was a fan for life…bought the albums I’d missed, including this one, and was forevermore ’feeling groovy’.
Strange tunings and members all hiding behind one another so nobody really has to stand out. Innovation has to be more than just new or different…it has to work. Nothing works here in my opinion.
Wow what a treat someone gave us when successfully recording and mastering this recording from 1956! A chance to hear Duke and his band live from the early days of the Newport jazz festival is priceless. Enjoyed tremendously.
There are some absolutely great songs on this Beatles album. The obvious huge hits everyone knows but also some lesser known gems like, Here, There and Everywhere. Outstanding.

Wow. That’s a joy and a huge gift to have this album for anyone who loves blues, jazz or just want to know where many other genres (ie rock, r&b, soul) all started. And who better to deliver some of these classics from way back than BB. Had a memorable time at his restaurant/club in Times Square back in 2010 too.
Poor man’s Doors…less memorable songs, much fewer songs, no Manzarek, No Jim. Not sure why they’d appear on this list.

Haven’t ever heard the extended version of “Living for the City”, one of my favorite SW songs. This album is giving something Ive never heard from an artist who changed my perspective of music. Stevie was my gateway into Jazz believe it or not! Love this album.
Definitely not my deal. Aside from Nirvana who I appreciated for their contribution to the evolution many sub genres of rock, the 90s grunge did not sit well with me…likely generational as I need more than just angst.
No matter how much I love Bobs music…some is saved to my favorites…it’s hard for me to listen to an entire album in succession. It’s his voice. It needs to be sparsed out for me.
What’s to say, other than it’s Aretha! The best album on this list so far.
Obvious here is the high level musicality, smooth, soothing vocals/harmonies and melody sense. If you’re good with all synth arrangements then this might be one for your favorites. Personally I need me some real instruments. For that reason, Personal Jesus is my favorite DM song.

If you don’t mind a grossly out of tune lead guitar player, the songs are good, especially the lyrics. I did a rare save of “Elvis Blues” and “Free” to my favorites. She does some nice genre surfing from almost a 50s ballad feel to traditional folk/bluegrass to a modern folk. Just wish he tuned that G-string on the lead guitar. It literally hurt to listen to a couple of his solos. But Gillian is just great.
Clean arrangements, competent vocals, but non-memorable top line melodies and divisive lyrics. Not for me.
Remember this album. Disappointing in 1982 and disappointing now…3 good songs out of 9. Better than nothing..especially these days. I come from the era of the album…so there is a bias. Back then there was rarely any more than one or two duds/album..if any. Do like the Nagel album art they often used. I’m sure Patrick did too…popularity of this band helped him to sell millions.
Classic album with many good songs by a true supergroup that came together organically…not contrived by some record company deal. Beautiful.

I really like this style/sub-genre just not sure this album would be in even my top 100 of this style. Voice not all that appealing. But I give credit where it’s due. She was a founder. I loved the music Spotify picked to play after the final song of the album finished…ie, Tom Waits, the Motels..etc.

Even though I should like Jack’s music based on the attributes aligning with my tastes, I never have. Not even sure why. Most comes down to melodies I think. I’m either touched by them or not..never been by his. I gave the album another chance cause it’s been a minute. Same thing..no likey.
Love the guitar work, parts and tones are both beautiful. Morrisey easy to listen to his smooth vocals. Ironically not as easy to hear him interviewed…although Im one who appreciates alt views as I share some of my own. Thoughtful discussion is so lost in our society today. Shame everyone takes everything as either a threat or a corroboration…as opposed to an opportunity to learn, empathize and or tolerate.
“Vincent (Van Gogh)” is hands down one of the greatest songs ever written. It resonates with so many genius artists never commercially recognized. Musically beautiful as well. Pie is a cultural anthem and the rest is nothing short of a kumbaya hallelujah.
Not sure why they chose to put, ‘Find Somebody’ second on this album (or on the album at all). Some of the rest was good enough to be considered somewhat on the level of a Poor Man’s Beatles…although sample size is small. I consider this a huge (probably too generous) compliment. Worth noting is how they went from PM’s Beatles to PM’s Dean Martin sings a Show tune on ‘How can I be Sure’ to a PM’s Drifters on ‘Groovin’. Not bad overall but nothing that needs to be on this list that includes many groundbreaking artists.
Some genius stuff on here. I always had respect for Kanye’s unconventional methods. Now all I hear is clouded by his antisemitic rants. Unfortunately.
Why were these guys never huge? I think it’s because they sounded like not only a different group on every song here but even a different sub-genre! They never embraced a style. If it were me I would’ve told them to go with that funky almost Chili Peppers vibe they hit on ‘Beautiful’. Guy almost sounded like Janis Joplin on that tune too. As a listener trying to id the band it would be near impossible when any other song from the album came up. ‘Sunlight’ for example, great song but sounds like an acoustic Doobie Bros tune. Then doing a rag time tune. Then a country folk tune. They could’ve been great if they did them, whatever that was. Instead I think someone was convincing them to fit into the time. They turned out to be a poor man’s Lovin Spoonful unfortunately. But I saved the album to my library regardless. A rare thing for me these days.
His voice is haunting. Not a lot of memorable top line melodies on this, his biggest album, other than the Cohen cover. But the way he vocally delivers each and every song as well as some of the interesting psychedelic arrangements makes this album a must listen and must have for me. Wow.
Easy to hear elements of his more rock future in this country album. Alternating suspended to straight cord riffs, etc. Some good songs. Poor man’s Dwight Yoakum who has a similar style but who’s had many more good songs.
I like that his lyrics are more centered around promoting social justice and personal growth as opposed to just booty, bling and drugs. Super refreshing when he emerged back when and the beats stand the test of time.

It reminds vocally of Anthony Kiedis a bit…without obviously copping…which is nice. I prefer lower register lead vocals…with some low end resonance…it’s refreshing in pop music as there is not near enough of these artists who get the spotlight they deserve.
Lots of good memories here. What can you say…truly the king of pop.
Their stuff (some) is good for working out to I guess. Shouting same part vox isn’t my thing. Drums are fun. Nothing else here for me.
