The Downward Spiral
Nine Inch NailsI didn't like this at all. It was like a whole record of a CSI theme song

Great to step into the 90s hip-hop sound today. I love the simplicity of the record. It's so effective and lets LH (and Wyclef Jean and Pras obviously) shine. I hadn't ever noticed to the chord structure of Killing Him Softly and I thought it was genius. My big takeaways are that sometimes simplicity is king and that LH is goated.
Alright, so damn unique. I hear some of the Madchester sound here. It feels so out of time and place. I had no idea what to expect. What a strange, strange, singular record.
Side A is way, way better than side B. There definitely is some filler here, and the back half is a bit tedious at times. But damn if it doesn't start off so strong. And Knopfler's guitar does so much heavy lifting here -- even if the song was a bit meh, it's so fun to hear him work his magic. Good listen overall.
This one didn't strike me the way Doolittle did/does. It's quintessential Pixies, so I'm a fan. But a bit more mid.
Not for me, but I appreciate it. I've got a real lack of love for early 90s and late 80s acoustic stuff. I really appreciate Chapman, and a few songs really stuck out. But this style isn't for me. She's obviously A+.
Not my favorite Neil Young, but some complete bangers here. I'm partial to Neil in 80s and 90s, but the early stuff is iconic.
Man, what a ride! I feel like I've been inducted into the School of Understanding Nile Rogers -- what a pioneer! So simple and so groovy.
Okay, so damn cool. This is inspiring. Great listen for work. Fun to hear jam music that isn't a rip off of Grateful Dead.
God damn, man. So good. Just in awe.
I don't like these guys. Not for me. Give me Simon, leave Garfunkel at home.
Pretty fucking great. I hadn't heard any of these songs that weren't megahits. Now, I've got no idea how anyone sings like this, but holy hell these songs are money. 90s to a fault.
So damn cool. Amazing, amazing jams here. I don't really care for blues-heavy rock, but this is great. Major fan. Psychedelic in all the right ways.
I mean, yeah. It's amazing.
I mean, it's good. Just didn't click with me in a major way. Wasn't ever knocked off my socks by anything or even found a song I really glued to. I prefer a lot of Plastic Ono stuff to this, but you know -- to each their own.
Some of these songs I knew, but others were new. "Sometimes" really blew me away, first time to hear it. I mean, this is a super inspirational record. Some of the production choices baffle me, but in the end, its peerless. Awesome album.
So insane. The sound of this record is so alive. Like you’re in the room. I’m amazed by this.
Absolute dogshit
Jesus Christ
This was killer. Reminded me a lot of the Curtis Mayfield record I listened to from this list. So many stand outs. I’m gonna keep coming back.
Been a favorite for a long time. No notes. Just peachy.
Really surprised by and loved this. I thought I didn't like lounge or lounge-adjacent sounds, but I was wrong. Lots of good songs on this record and the instrumentation is stunning. The arrangements were wild. I forget which one, but towards the end there's a guitar panned right with a quarter-note delay that's panned left and it's doing some Garcia-like shit. Very inspiring and did a huge lift for the song with something really simple. Fan.
I just can't do this much accordion. Fairytale of NY is a banger, though.
Heard it lots. Awesome to revisit. So many songs I forgot. One of the better double records.
Probably the OG GD studio album. Always amazed by Bob and Phil. I guess I didn't realize that they close the record with Truckin'. That's a move of some sort.
Yeah. Still amazing. Those Albini drums are so special.
Loved the beats here. So fucking creative. And obviously the revolutionary hymnal vibe is excellent. I so dig PE
I guess I get why my parents wouldn’t let me listen to this. It’s great.
Respect, I guess. They’re studio lords. Funny songs. Maybe a bit too meta for me.
Really liked it. Not my usual fare and won’t revisit soon, but huge respect
One of my all time favs
I absolutely loved this. So short and sweet. Was weirdly moved by this on my walk this morning.
Really wonderful. A little tiring at times, constant harmony is difficult for the length of a record. Still, so beautiful. Not many stand-out songs, in my opinion.
Just not really for me.
Jesus fucking christ
Just bangers. Straight kooky bangers. Early TP is inspiring.
She's so cool. Her band is amazing. I really appreciate this, but I'm probably not going to grab it for a casual listen. I don't have much of a penchant for the dark, goth-y punk sound.
Pretty stellar. One of the last vestiges of rock. Side B is way better than Side A, imo. Flowers is probably the best modern front man? And who the hell is on bass? What a tone and what a player.
Annnnnnnd a wild perfect record appears!
Maybe just not for me. I can’t get there with gothy stuff. Fuckin bass tone tho
I really liked this! Testify sent chills down my spine with the punchline, GO! Is a classic. I totally dig it.
I mean. This is like the Chat GPT version of New Wave.
It’s an all timer
kerr: [clapping] [varejao walks by kerr on his way to the bench] kerr: [eyes widen, puffs out cheeks, mouths "wow holy shit"]
Sounds so similar to Marshal Mathers LP. I get why mom wouldn’t let me listen to him.
I didn't like this at all. It was like a whole record of a CSI theme song
I love their later stuff way more. Early Stones is a little meh, but it’s still the damn Stones
Just a lot of ripping off the Beatles here. And some strange production? And weird takes that usually wouldn’t make a record?
I enjoyed! Production is amazing.
my god this is incredible
it was as boring now as it was when it came out. I didn't like it then, I don't like it now.
Not nearly as banging as Live From Memphis, but yeah. It fucks
Absolutely incredible. Generational
Meh. was a fan in college. Don't know if my tastes have aged well enough to listen fairly.
Im never going to enjoy ska. Cool artifact tho
Really cookie cutter. Rolls us every 70s trope in one record.
little repetitive, but they were so ahead of the times.
I generally really liked it. Maybe a bit bloated and I don’t know how long I could’ve done that voice
More variety than I appreciated. Lil Led Zeppelin rip off
Little overwrought and over baked for me but I can dig
I cannot support this band
Kiss my ass prog rock
