Definitely interesting… my first Metallica album so I’m not used to it but I’m definitely trying to lean into it. I think I like “…And Justice For All.” I also like the opening to “One.” However, I did fall asleep listening to this one.
“Shhh / Peaceful” made me feel like George Clooney walking through a casino I just robbed. Classic, good time, wish it was longer.
Hm this is kinda weird, but I don’t hate it. “Da Funk” is certainly iconic. AND “Around the World” of course! I can see how in the 90s this could’ve been really groundbreaking. Really dislike “Rollin’ & Scratchin’” and also “Rock’n Roll” probably because of all the scratching. Sorry Daft Punk but I don’t think you’re my vibe.
I like this more than the Daft Punk. Love the title of “Exhuming McCarthy.” This album just has a really classic 80s sound and I enjoy it! I don’t think I’d taken the time to listen to REM before; I’d definitely listened to “Welcome to the Occupation” before, though, and obviously “It’s the end of the world as we know it.” And “One I Love”!! I feel like I keep hearing tinges of “Save it for Later” by the English Beat in some of the songs and I don’t know if that’s just in my head. I was especially interested in listening to “Lightnin’ Hopkins” because I thought it’d be about the artist. It’s not, but it’s still a sick track. Basically, this album has a bunch of bangers on it and it kept surprising me… like oh! This song is on here! And this one, too!
I hope this album is as sexy as it looks. Okay French rap! I fear I would appreciate it more if I understood what he was saying but also it’s cool. The beats are fun and I like the musical influences that bleed into it.
I am very excited about this one I love Solomon’s voice. “Cry to Me” is so iconic I can’t imagine it not existing… imagine it’s 1964 and you hear this for the first time ever. Also I think “Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)” has a melody that sounds really familiar… I gotta figure that out. “Can’t nobody love you” is just one of my favorite songs ever. The instrumentation is “you can’t love me all” is awesome.. go horns go! This album is just great. The easiest 5/5.
Fuck yeah. I don’t think I’d heard “Jimmy Jazz” before and I like it. I also like “Hateful.” I’m sure I’ll say this often but this is a very classic rock album.. it’s reliable and you know what you’re getting and what you’re getting is good.
Phenomenal, show-stopping album. No notes. Listening to it all the way through, I definitely had a deeper appreciation for what it is as concept album, whereas before I just loved a lot of the songs on it individually.
I have never heard of this before! I know X’s “Wild Thing” and that’s it. I do like it—feels exactly what early 80s rock should sound like. I like how the lead singers voices sound together. I like what the guitar does on “Adult Books” a lot. Some of the other songs just kinda wash over me. I would definitely enjoy this as a concert but probably wouldn’t choose to listen to this in my own.
I’m so sorry please forgive me but I saw “Heads Will Roll” and immediately thought of Glee… This is a good listen, though. “Skeletons” feels like something you’d listen to while standing on top of a truck on the freeway… gives me “All My Friends” vibes.
All praise for 90s rap. I will probably give this album 5 stars but I recognize that is betraying my allegiance to West Coast rap. My favorites are: “NY State of Mind,” “Life’s a Bitch”, “One Love,” and “Represent.”
The Young Gods sound familiar but looking at their popular songs I don’t recognize any of them. More French music! “La fille de la mort” is giving circus vibes.. and now it’s like hard rock metal on the second track? What is happening! It’s not getting better and I do not like it.
Okay The Cure! Okay spooky scary skeleton opening to “One Hundred Years”! I think my problem with the cure is a lot of their songs do tend to sound the same.. but some of them are really good! I just haven’t heard the ones on this album. I like the guitar solo in “A Strange Day.” This is tough because I just let this one wash over me and wasn’t very into it… feels illegal to rank The Cure at 3 but… here we go.
LETS GOOOOO. One of my favorite albums. “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” has a very special place in my heart. I really love this album.. comfort album!
Oh this is gonna make me sad…good sad but sad. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” did bring a tear to my eye.. There is something very poetic about his last non-posthumous album being full of other people’s songs he wanted to sing. Slay for “Desperado.” And his “We’ll Meet Again” is so perfect and bittersweet.
This cover reminds me of the bad guy ghost that chases you in the Halloween version of Space Mountain. The delta blues influence is STRONG- especially in this opening track- this is totally not what I expected. I don’t know how much I like his voice, but I appreciate the musicality. I like “Dirt in the Ground” and the instrumentation in “Such a Scream.” And “Who Are You” has a lovely ballad sound to it, so does “A Little Rain.” I also think “Black Wings” is kinda groovy. Need to listen through again.
Gotta be honest I don’t think I’m a huge Pearl Jam person but it’s time to try something new. I think what I’m learning about myself through this project is that… maybe I don’t like 90s rock that much. Which feels like blasphemy. I do have a lot of respect for the guitar though… the guitar solo on “Alive” really got me. I think I’m giving this a 4 because I appreciate that it is good at what it’s doing.
Ok Santana! Ok groovy time! Ok wind chimes! Oh “Black Magic Woman”…. A song that sounds kinda like sex should. Come on cowbell in “Oye Como Va”! I love the guitar on this album of course—shout out the solo on “Hope You’re Feeling Better”—but I think the diversity of instrumentation on the album is especially noteworthy.
Oh fuck yeah. Immediate 5 stars for the sole inclusion of “How to Disappear Completely” which holds a special place in my heart. This album is a lil droning and intense but that’s ok. It’s lowkey giving ambient music at times?? Especially “Treefingers”… but in a good way. “Optimistic” is good, too.
LETS FUCKING GOOOO. Can I even say anything? This has to be one of my favorite albums of all time. No notes.
Very anti-imperial and very timely to 2004. Morrissey really flipping off the crown and parliament! It’s a little lyrically literal and also very dooms day… but I guess that’s Morrissey? It didn’t make a huge impression on me if I’m being totally honest, but I understand why it’s important.
Banger after banger from Millie’s father-in-law. “Livin’” and “You Give Love” AND “Wanted” on one album is crazy!
Neva heard of these folks before! It’s ok! I liked “Star” and “Medication.” And “Trainspotting” was vibey.
SHUTUPSHUTUP!!! This performance of “Suspicious Minds” did something to me. This album is part of the Elvis come back…. Post ‘68 comeback, the return of THEE Elvis. I’m so sorry Sofia Coppola you can’t make me hate Elvis. I love the choral singers; I especially noticed it on “Long Black Limousine.” And the cover of “Gentle on My Mind” got to me… I didn’t know he did that! It’s slower and I kinda like it. Glenn’s is still the best, though. Oh also “In the Ghetto” is on here. This album just makes me think of Memphis… which obviously it would but y’know it just does. Even “Kentucky Rain” sounds like Memphis.
Pissed this isn’t the album with “Little Black Submarines” but I guess I’ll get over it. It’s vibey. It’s just the first song but I like “Everlasting Light.” It’s giving Arctic Monkeys realness or 1975…. Is that illegal to say? Maybe. “TIGHTEN UP”!! Ok I understand why this album is on here because “Howlin for You” is also on here. I like “Unknown Brother.” I like this album.
Not the sort of album I expected on here but I don’t dislike it! And I always love a live album. Okay accordion?? I will say I don’t really know what genre this is? It’s nice instrumental music, I just think it’s a little disjointed sometimes? And I feel like for instrumental to make an impact it really has to *do* something for me. It’s just hard to rank this against “Rumors.” Maybe I’m a bad person for having this take…. I just don’t think I love it. I’ve decided it’s the vibraphone! It’s throwing me off. It’s a 3.5 so I’m giving it a 3.
I’ve heard of massive attack… why? Is it sexist that I’m surprised I’m hearing a woman? Probably. Oh there’s the guy (I’m listening to “Safe From Harm”). These folks are English??? Nevermind “Blue Lines” is so British. I like this. A lot! Especially “Daydreaming.”
An immediate 5 star album.
Doggies. “Girls & Boys” is iconic. These other songs are okay. I think I like “Badhead” too. And also “Magic America.”
Faust?? Ah, German ambiance industrial music. This is gonna be a tough one. I feel like I’ve been listening to “Krautrock” for 15 years. I think I like “The Sad Skinhead” maybe.
I *am* young American. All night! One of my favorite samples in that song, too. I love when samples make you reimagine an original. “Fascination” is kinda gay. Omg speaking of Beatles covers and samples. I don’t really like “Can You Hear Me” that much… it’s hard to when “Fame” is an option. I also like “Who Can I Be Now?” quite a bit.
A live album?? Maybe I’ll like it more? “The Ecstasy of Gold” fucks I love Ennio Morricone. I’m scared to ask but where’s the Metallica? I found it, it’s in “The Call of Ktulu.” This also sounds like the Space Mountain Halloween ghost vibe. As cool as this is, I fear it’s still Metallica which I don’t really like? 3.5
This is super interesting and I like it! and I fuck with the album cover’s font. I really like the instrumentation. This is easily a 4/5 album. I like the percussion in “Gidelam” and “Olel” a lot. This is just good vibes! “Sy Sawande” is very bright and calming.
Oh shut up come on. This is already one of my faves… though I’ve never listened to it all the way through! I like the opening to “Duncan” this is cool, it sounds a little Dylan-esque. “Run That Body Down” is good.. I’ve heard it in a movie or something. I also like “Peace Like a River.” Obviously “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” is huge. And I’m sorry but “Hobo Blues” opening is a banger. Easy 5/5. Oh and the “Paranoia Blues” unreleased version is fun.
NO WAY I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!! I have listened to this in full before but looking forward to it again. “Big Iron” is so important to me. I think Marty just has a really good voice, too.
Gram Parsons! 1974! I like “Return of the Grievous Angel” a good amount. I really like the medley and “Love Hurts” is also great. Emmylou feature is a slay. It’s very country but I like the vibes and the twang.
I feel like this will make me cry? I don’t think I know any of these songs but that’s okay. “Story of Isaac” is intense I’m not super into it. The album title is very apt. I like “A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes” more. “The Partisan” more like The Parisian (is this French??). Ok hot take this album is kinda a downer! What’s that instrument in the back of the songs… I looked it up it’s called a “Jew’s harp.” It’s very prominent in “The Old Revolution.” I’m sorry Leonard these songs kind of drone.
Woah another Arcade Fire!! Oh first song in and I already fuck with it. This is kind of a long album but I do like it. “City With No Children” has a good sound to it, too.
This is ok I think. Kind of like that one Arcade Fire album, I need to be in a specific mood for this. It’s just a little washy rock..
BLESS UP I’ve been tired by some of the album picks and this is just solid slay show stopping amazing.
Oh I like this. Talk to me Ray! “Night Life” makes me wanna slow dance and share a bottle of red. “Lonely Street” is a little sleepy. This is kinda honky tonk but I do like it. So I definitely thought it was one type of album and it was another kind of album, but I’m not disappointed. It’s maybe a 3.5 but I don’t have the heart to give it a 3. So, 4.
Ah yes I’ve been meaning to listen to this one. I predict a 5 star rating. Update: It’s a 5 star album.
Funky and cool. Vibes. Yeah this is good. Early 70s soundtracks are unbeatable. Rip Freddie. “Think - Instrumental” is nice.
Idk what this is but here goes! Oh nvm I know this song “Clandestino.” Why are all these songs familiar? I don’t like “Bongo bong.” Same with the French one. This reminds me like Chicano Batman a lot.
YEAHHHHHHH immediate 5/5 I love this album and “Thirteen” is one of my most favorite songs ever. I love this album because it has “Feel” and then a song like “Thirteen” on it. And the “Ballad of El Goodo” my favorite “Desperado” knock off. Or prequel. I forgot “when my baby’s beside Me” was on this album!
Another song called Motion Sickness?? It’s kinda fun, just not better than the other one. Albums like these make me wonder why they’re here. Not in a mean way just that I don’t know why! I don’t dislike it, I just don’t explicitly like it. It’s nice to have in the background of my drive, though. A solid 3.
YEAHHHHH I’ve been so bad about listening to these on time but THIS??
This album is my Everest. 59 songs, over 3 hours. Her voice is flawless. How did it happen? And how lucky are we to live in a time where we can hear it… I know this will be a 5 star album I just want to actually listen to it. Update: I have done it. 4 stars bc it’s long!
Classic album. Gonna be a 5 star rating and if it’s not idk anything anymore. Come ON drum beat in “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” ugh I miss disco. It didn’t go anywhere, I just don’t listen to it as much anymore.
Jumping back into this challenge. First track is starting off funky, so I like it! 1990 is crazy though. I keep finding myself thinking “this sounds just like Depeche Mode” which is funny but also proves their sound is so singular. Ok Personal Jesus!! And Enjoy the Silence!! I don’t like Clean but I am happy for him.
Not gonna lie this opening is really turning me off. I fear this will be a 2 star album for me cus I’m really not into this…. I’m only on the second song so we’ll see I guess? If I’m being totally honest this is kinda unlistenable. I thought i might have a winner with “Weeping” but I fear not. I can see how this album may have felt ahead of its time, and therefore interesting, but I do not like it.
Is this album too long? And I have to wait so long to hear “Tusk”? Hm. I think I like “Rumors” more but I do like this! “That’s Enough for Me” is fun. “Tusk” takes the cake though it’s just so cool.
This will be five stars sorry team. Bee Gees mean a lot to me and this album is very important!! “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” is very personal to me and also all of us. Hot take I’ve finished the album and I didn’t like the rest of it…. So… 4.5?
Crazy to listen to this album after my Jazz Sabbath exposure. In a funny way, Jazz Sabbath made me appreciate “Snowblind” and “Changes” even more. Big fan of “Laguna Sunrise.” 4 stars.
Easy 5 stars. All love for “Blueberry Hill.”
I wish I remembered how I felt when I heard these songs for the first time. Crazy.
I will be skipping the bonus tracks sorry soft boys. I think this is okay. Just all kinda sounds the same. But not bad!
Is it possible this is a 3? Maybe a 4? “The Weight” does a lot. 3.5 I’m sorry.
Never heard of this before. Eh.
Always funny to open an album and already have every song liked or added to a playlist. However, not the best Beatles album.
Great, but not Songs in the Key!
Biiiiigggg fan of the doors but this is not my favorite album of theirs, so we’ll see how this goes. Despite lyrical content, I did not enjoy “Alabama Song.” Yeah this is just okay. 3.5? 4? Ugh.
Johnny Cash’s voice is something that is very special to me. I like his live albums especially. 4 star!
Oh yes he is. I enjoyed this but didn’t love it? So maybe it’s a 3… but that doesn’t feel right. 3.5?
This cover concerns me, Joni. Update: I was right.
I like this but not sure if I like it enough for a 4. Maybe!
Hmmm I’m kinda bored! It’s not bad I’m just not hooked.
I like The Band! I’ll say it!
This first song is long. This whole album is kinda weird! But like okay?
Well, I’m scared by this album cover. But I’m on the first song and I kinda like it. Update: I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it.
So I liked this but did I love it? Not really? So like 3.5… which is getting old tbh.
it’s an automatic 4 for Baba O’Riley imo. really solid, another banger from 71
one of my faves, an album for all seasons but especially an LA cozy winter or spring.
