I was not expecting as much harmonica as I was generously showered with in this album. To be blunt, I didn’t like the way he sang 80% of the time, like he’s almost talk singing but I get that it’s a choice and I just don’t enjoy listening to that choice. Lyrics and metaphors were great though, and shout out to the line: “I’m helpless like a rich man’s child,” it did make me giggle. My favorite songs were visions of Johanna, one of us must know, and most likely you go your way. Those three were legitimately very good and I did enjoy listening to them though the album as a whole I don’t think I’d ever listen to for entertainment value but I appreciate it’s old timey, poetic, harmonica filled vibe.
The amount of style change throughout this album is amazing, I like that it shows his ability to create different vibes for different songs and he doesn’t just follow a formula, however it made the album as a whole a little confusing for me. It doesn’t feel very cohesive at times. The contrast of sweet sad lyrics and dark background and outro music in broken drum made it a favorite for me. And I have to go with the masses on girl, it’s a banger. My other highlight was missing, I really like the lyrics of this one. Unfortunately as much as I loved go it alone it was ruined for me by the amount of nah nah’s in the song, just feels like cheap chorus writing. He also did this in E-pro, and with yeah’s and lala’s in rental car which I didn’t love. Overall because my enjoyment listening to this album it’s probably 4 stars but truly as an album and not based on individual songs I liked it’d be a 3 because I don’t think its super put together to be an album.
There were many times in the album I was impressed by the writing and lyrics, but something internally in me just had a hard time taking a yelling man deeply seriously and earnestly as anything more than angry. Which is the reason I generally avoid metal anyways, but regardless I really liked a lot of it artistically because of the lyricism or musical riffs, I just wouldn’t listen for entertainment (such as holier than thou). Although overall I did like it more than I expected to. One favorite has got to be the unforgiven because it dealt with my issue with many of the other songs that there’s little to no variation in singing tone, and when he sings in the chorus of this song, along with a great guitar instrumental made it legitimately enjoyable for me.
First of all, listening to Immigrant Song alone in my car instead of with a bunch of middle aged white men yelling along was a weird experience. It was overall more enjoyable than I expected. Lots and lots of drawn out, somewhat uninteresting, drum and guitar instrumentals in the first half of the album but what’s to be expected from classic hard rock. But then Tangerine hit and I forgot I was listening to the same album. From there the rest of the album was great in my opinion and I still liked somethings from the first part of the album but I wouldn’t go back to it because it wasn’t really interesting to me.
It was certainly a vibe. I loved the saxophones throughout the entire album and would absolutely turn it on if I’m looking for a chill, relaxing, schmexy saxophone vibe. But it didn’t overall grasp my interest cause I didn’t find all the lyricism amazing throughout the album. Definitely high quality stuff though, the lyrics just aren’t the focus, and generally very enjoyable.
This is possibly the most bland pop I’ve ever listened to. None of the songs stood out and it sounds like something you’d maybe put in the background of a birthday party while you’re not paying attention to the music at all. They didn’t do anything especially bad in the album but also nothing actually good. So there’s that.
This was a good vibe. Very groovy stuff, but I don’t think I’d really go listen to it again just for fun. Song to song there wasn’t a ton of variation it felt like but that did make a cohesive album, just not a ton of stand out songs.
