It's a great album. Don't get me wrong. It has that slight disco feel but still scratches that minimalist edge that you don't really get with many albums from the seventies. It's original, it's creative, it's unique, it's talking heads, but unfortunately, after 3 or so songs, they don't really know what to do with themselves. The pressure to release another good album after their previous hits were high and they didn't take that time that they needed to really carve out and perfect every track. They keep that original feel throughout the album but they don't use it properly; and you eventually get tired of it. For someone who likes this kind of style, it's a great album; but if you're looking for fresh and interesting music, you might get bored with this one. 3/5 stars
When I started listening to this album, I already had "More than a feeling" stuck in my head. It's one of those songs that when you start hearing the melody, you know it has that attracting flare that makes rock music so good. And after having a chance to listen to this album, I can confirm that "More than a feeling" is not their only good song. Before I listened to this album, I kind of thought that Boston was a one hit wonder. So, I planned on listening to the first song on the album and then listening to the same classic rock beat. However, I can confirm to you that musically, their is a lot more than classic rock in this album. Boston uniquely dives in to country and pre-progressive rock while keeping the same sound elements of a classic rock band. One song that stood out to me well was "Foreplay/Long Time". The beginning sounds like a intro to a Dream Theater concert, with the piano riff and the sudden jerks of the low distorsion guitar. The constant modulations in the first two minutes also makes it seem a lot more progressive than it is. Seriously, I would think that this it was a dream theater song. That is until you realize that dream theater wasn't formed until 20 years later. Another song that really stood out to me was "smokin'" which has a country vibe that keeps their own style. There are other songs/things that I would go into depth, like "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" which is a very soothing song that I really love, but I won't write any more. My only complaint is the distortion sound. It's not bad but they use it on every goddamn song and it becomes very painful after two or three. A lot of songs would do much better with a clean, softer guitar sound. Musically, however, this album is great and I really appreciated it. 4/5 stars.
Wow. What an album. Deservedly the second ranked out of all the albums on the global ranking. Each song well refined, well recorded, and well thought through. In the midst of nearly killing each other, they managed to somehow all shine through, pitching in a piece of their creativity into each and every song. It refrains from being repetitive but still has that nature in which it weaves together into one large project. Based here, but my favorite just has to be Dreams. Such an iconic song. I won't be surprised if it has a resurgance in popularity with teens (if it hasn't already) just like Iris by The goo goo dolls. 10/10.
bit biased here, but not my cup of tea tbh
Wow. I usually don't like or listen to rap, however this hits hard. It blends in jazz through samples and that really appeals to me. I hope there is other rap out there like this because it's great. Ham n' eggs is great. That horn riff will be stuck in my head for a while now ngl
When did repetitive, boring, monotonal, wanna-be rock win 3 grammys? In 2010. This album has no creativity whatsoever. It doesn't create ideas, it just riffs the same one on the same instruments for 15 fucking songs. Like what the fuck is this one of the worst albums i've ever listened to. 0 stars
classic oldies album. good stuff
Not her best album (Post is, go listen to that one plz). It's not bad. But it's not good. She develops GREAT ideas. I really love the orchestration and the rythms. I'm an avant-garde kinda guy, so I love Bjork's work. It's just this album.... she creates all these potential-high ideas, but she doesn't go anywhere with them. They are just... ideas. 6/10
only good coldplay album
tooooo heavy
Feels like trying to talk to a delusional on-drugs and alchohol creep but everytime u try to say something he interrupts u. but instead of interrupting u he interupts the music. the lyrics and the music are fighting lol. unlistenable. 0/5
not bad, not good. reminded me of when a lemon fell on my head and i stepped on an acorn at the same time. it's just that kind of music
no thank you
Not sure how I feel about this They were trying to be something that they weren't. They played with style but didn't add their own emotion to it. 3.5/5 stars
You can understand why he wasn't a big hit. His music isn't necessarily mainstream, it's more dark and unique. The album as the whole misses that little smack of excellence that makes artists like Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the rolling stones, ELO, and tons of other artists popular. However, that doesn't mean that there isn't certain moments in the album that catch you. American Gothic is full of those little sparks of magic that make it a good album. If you don't have the patience to listen to the less attractive and more contemporary, you're not going to pick out the feel-good classic rock moments. David Ackles knows what he's doing, but the audience he's intending it for isn't exactly a large population. American Gothic, the title track, is one of these contemporary songs that may not be easy to listen to but it has that interesting, dark aspect that takes a different perspective to understand it's brilliance. If you look at the lyrics you can put yourself into the shoes of the character being described, and suddenly the music kind of surrounds you and puts you into a complicated, dark, somewhat somber, but creative world that Ackles creates. Love's Enough is the main moment in the album. I would've made it the title track but that's not my choice. It's a sobby ballad but it has that harmonic center that's unique but mainstream enough to be a feel-good song. Very ahead of it's time in a way but still great. Not much more to say. Just a nice song The next two songs were an interesting listen. They were kind of similar in a way but I apriciate the uniqueness and while others may not like it I found it pleasing. That's just personal taste. Oh how I wish that Oh California was a longer piece. It's another moment that's worth listening to, something I'd play again. It's a bit more groovy and I live in California so that's a W. It's a happy atmosphere that gives a break from Ackles' relentless somber feel. Good song in general as well, it's very inspired and satisfying. Another Friday Night just felt off a little bit. sort of misplaced in the album and it kind of felt like what you were thinking about last friday. eh Family Band had a kind of reminiscince and nostalgic feel to it. Enlightening in a way that makes you feel bittersweet. It's a very evoking piece, that's for sure. Midnight Carousel was interesting to say the least. It was weird, simply put Now I loved waiting for the moving van. It was similar to Love's enough but different enough to not sound repetitive. It creates an atmosphere while still having a relatively normal tonal center. It took a tone of harmonic twists that weren't jolting but rather pleasing. feel-good is the best way to name it blues for billy whitecloud is a blues. no more explanation lol Montana song was great but just a little long. I absolutely adore that orchestration though I'm tired of writing. You get my point. It's not a great album but it's not a bad album. 4/5 for uniqueness and captivatingness (not a word lol)
