Nighthawks At The Diner
Tom WaitsThe skits before every song were obnoxious. There were moments that were ok but this record just feels like bad stand up comedy and talking over a light jazz beat.

It feels kinda silly to review this. Immediately while listening I could tell even compared to a lot of other albums on this list, this really stands out. I’m not surprised it’s tied for first as the number 1 album to listen to. I think it’s hard to separate the bias of knowing that it’s a great album and that so many people love it, but it really is that good.
This album has a lot of cool instrumentation. It’s a lot slower than what I typically find myself listening to. I really enjoyed Mothers Daughter, but the rest of the album I felt like I got lost in the pacing. As a guitarist, I was impressed with Santana’s ability, but it’s not something I would see myself returning to regularly. If at all.
I enjoyed my listen! Metal songs tend to be little bit too long for my usual taste in casual listening, but I really enjoyed the songs that progressed into 2-3 distinct sounds as they played out. The second half of the album was stronger to me, I really enjoyed disposable heroes and Orion.
The back half of the album was stronger to me. The way the final two songs blend into eachother is awesome. I can definitely hear the influence of death grips and jazz throughout.
The lyrics and delivery are kinda corny but somehow it all works. I really enjoyed this album. Satellite of love was a standout for me!
I liked this album. I could see myself listening to Lovers Rock with the windows down on a nice summer day.
This was cool. Obviously imagine is the big song but the rest was decent. I understand the criticism that the Beatles together sound better and I agree but I think this holds on its own.
Realized I need to pay more attention to lyrics. This album was all acoustic and kinda sad. It was ok- not my favorite Bruce album.
I enjoyed this. Could definitely see the influence of their sound in the 90s after them.
I really liked the variety of sounds on here. Album got noticeably better when I swapped from my car audio to my ear buds. Will be trying to listen in my ear buds moving forward.
I wanted to like this album more. Some of the elements I really enjoyed, others sounded really loud and abrasive. I did appreciate the experimentation with sound in a more “analog” way then modern production methods.
This album was kinda boring. Musically it was ok but it was kinda monotonous by the end. There’s more interesting music from the 80s to listen to.
It was a fine album. Realized I actually knew lovefool, the rest kinda feels samey. I do kinda like the baby voice singer vibes. But I’ll be honest man of the year by Lorde really overshadowed this record today.
It was a fine album. Blues feels kinda “samey” to me. Songs were a little long. I can’t be satisfied had some cool harmonica work.
This was fine. Smooth. Nothing really stood out to me in particular. I didn’t mind listening. I was surprised how old it was- it felt much more modern.
I’ve only recently started enjoying country music, and this is absolutely the kind of country music I can get behind. So personal and genuine, good guitar and instrumentation, just felt good start to finish. A bit shorter than some other albums on here but it was the perfect amount to keep me engaged throughout. I really liked Omaha.
Okay album. Was interesting to learn this was the follow up to thriller. The hits were good, the rest of the album kinda fades into the background. So many HEE HEEs!
First album I know I will be returning to on this list! The experimentation is great. I can hear the influence on many of the artists I listen to today. Nude is fantastic and so is jigsaw falling into place.
Classic rock sound. I think this could have been in 4 territory but it’s too long and monotonous. If it were half the length with only the strongest songs it would have been more powerful.
I feel like this was a 2 teetering on a 3 but I ultimately decided on a 3. Some of the mic effects and production / mixing techniques were very cool- other elements of this album just went a little too long for me.
There was some really cool beats and production techniques on here. Flowed nicely from start to finish.
No skips! I knew the hits but this whole album just kinda flows together and keeps it entertaining. It’s also pride month so it feels fitting to be listening to it now. I definitely will be returning to this album
I liked this! Sounds like classic 80s. Also found out the lead singer is gay so happy pride again!
I had to listen to this album more than once. At first I was just kinda meh about it, but the second listen really brought it together for me. The second half of the album is insane. Completely caught me off guard. Very few artists are doing the same sort of thing. Originally I was gonna rate this a 3 but the second listen bumped it up to a 4.
I liked that there was a story to the album. That was about it. Reminded me of final fantasy or church music but pixelated. The rock elements were cool. On a day I was nicer this could maybe be a 2.
Cold beverage stands out to me for being exceptionally weird and not great… it’s kinda a funky album. I like the singers voice. Beyond that, it’s kinda slow and boring. Sounds a lot older than it really is.
Had to listen more than once to pay more attention. This album was kinda sad- it’s funny because most of the actual sounds and the beat and their voices sounds more sing songy and light. Wouldn’t it be nice is a strong opening track and the contrast with the theming of the rest of the album was too good.
Probably kinda biased since my dad really likes U2. This album was chill. Reminds me of songs I listened to growing up. The political climate right now while listening to it is… yeah.
I liked this more than I was expecting. It was kinda slow/generic rock for awhile, but the way that the production would change and get more experimental and genre blending was really cool. The random death metal screaming in one of the songs caught me off guard but it worked in the context of the whole album.
This was fine. Nothing particularly stood out to me. It was smooth. I read the description comparing them to Oasis and honestly I didn’t hear it. This is more boring, but inoffensive. I wouldn’t mind this on in the background.
I feel like this could be four and a half stars. It’s such a loud album and so abrasive- the mixing makes it feel fuzzy even though I know it’s an intentional style choice. The way the album slows down at the end contrasts sharply with its aggressive opening. The elements of electronic music and metal blending with the rock is very cool. I really enjoyed this album.
Did not like this. There were some cool moments but ultimately I probably wouldn’t listen again if it was my choice.
Really not very memorable to me. Felt really generic. It was a fine listen but nothing that really captivated me.
Kinda boring. Nothing really stood out to me. It was fine but only fine.
I feel bad not rating this higher when everybody pretends to like Bob Marley but it was just ok. I don’t think I like reggae all that much. I loved the drums. Would probably enjoy it more if I was able to pay attention to the lyrics but this project has taught me I’m not very good at that.
Had to update this to a 1 after listening to his other album. Would not listen again I did not like this.
This was not great. I liked it more than his other album I listened to the day before. I’m not good at paying attention to lyrics so I missed a lot of the gross horny stuff. This is definitely 1-2 territory but since I liked it better than his other album I’ll give it a 2
This is probably objectively a 4 but since I’ve been listening to this album since my childhood it’s definitely a 5. The initial track run at the start of the album is so crazy it’s hard to imagine it’s just hit after hit after hit. Was so happy to get this album after a week of 2s.
I liked this album. Sail away was a great song. Reminds me of John Mayer / that early 2000s singer songwriter pop. Easy to listen to, if a little forgettable at times.
A very 3 album. I didn’t like the one song that abruptly ends it made me feel like I accidentally skipped it on my phone so I had to go back and listen twice and it was still jarring the second time.
Wow. I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I was going to. It’s weird… lots of Alabama mentions. And of course Lynyrd Skynyrd. Truthfully, I liked it all, the worst part of this album is that it just goes on for too long. Also, having the last song be from the perspective of the plane crash is absolutely insane.
Kind of a long album that all blurred together for me. Not particularly my cup of tea. My mom really likes prince so I tried to be especially interested but felt very middle of the road to me for this most part.
It’s funny listening to the bands that my dad had so many opinions on as I was growing up, and finally getting to form my own. Lyrics were forgettable for sure, but the face melting guitar that cuts through this whole album was fantastic.
I don’t love a live album but I actually really enjoyed this. The boys are back in town is an absolute classic. The rest flows very nicely together.
When I saw jazz I got scared but this was actually ok. Not a traditional “jazz” album that sounded like elevator music or was boring. It was kind of monotonous but if this was on in the background or something I really think it would add to the vibe.
It was ok. Definitely can tell Bjork is in the band… it’s a little grating but I could see the potential in how it all started. Probably wouldn’t listen again.
Jazz is not really my thing. Kinda boring. Some of it sounds so chaotic and anxiety inducing, I prefer the smoother bits of it. It is cool to have a bunch of different songs all blend into one.
I was surprised to see so many negative reviews for this album. I liked it. A little slow / samey at some points, but it was soft and smooth and I’m a sucker for debut album.
I think I’m biased because my dad really likes U2 but I enjoyed this album! More so than the other one I’ve listened to on this list. I think it starts out stronger than it finishes.
I really liked this. Good rock for cruising on a summer night.
This was a fine listen. Kinda strange, but I’d happily have this on in the background. No songs stuck out to me as big hits from one another.
Kaity and I both think his singing isn’t great. I was happy this album was in the 30-40 minute range since I’ve had so many long records recently. The guitar is good. The lyrics are clear and crisp, unlike other records I’ve listened to from the same time period
I knew this album existed from knights of cydonia on guitar hero. I also have a special place in my heart for muse because my friend David and I absolutely jammed out to them hanging out in my room on a really good day. Flows nicely. Sounds out of this world.
The skits before every song were obnoxious. There were moments that were ok but this record just feels like bad stand up comedy and talking over a light jazz beat.
Solid 80s rock album. Synthy. Pimpf at the end was cool. Otherwise, kinda samey but wouldn’t mind having it on in the background.
I loved this. Probably because of my dad haha. I do think a lot of it sounds similar but that’s ok because it’s a damn good song. I really liked if you want blood (you’ve got it).
Didn’t love this. Was kinda boring. I saw that there are 6 albums on this list so maybe another will resonate more with me.
I had never listened to their debut. Much more rock than the more indie than the stuff I’m familiar with. I especially liked the closing track.
The guitar on this album is great. Compared to in rainbows, I enjoyed this slightly less. Could maybe be 4.5 potential but I rounded down in this case. Would be happy to listen to this again.
I can’t believe I’ve never listened to this album. I knew heads would roll but the whole album together is fantastic. Hysteric and the acoustic version blew my mind.
The worst part is that I could see the appeal of some parts of this album… but everything else associated with kid rock and his lyrics solidifies the 1 ranking.
I liked this. Got kinda bored through it but I wouldn’t be mad to hear it on if I was out and about.
I enjoyed this. The electronic elements were cool. The songs were a little long for me and there wasn’t a big pay off or huge song I was blown away by.
This was decent. I liked most of it but overall felt bored. Very listenable on all accounts.
Blues really isn’t my thing. The album was “fine”. It didn’t captivate me. Probably wouldn’t listen again if I was making my own choices.
I thought the songs were excellent. As for musical style and delivery, I was less impressed with bob Dylan’s singing. Will be interesting to get another album by him.
I think I liked this better than the other Elvis Costello album I had before this. The short songs are great- the album goes by quick and it’s all quite catchy how it just flows through. This was decent!
Heavy. I love that this app gives you an album when a relevant person dies so everybody listens together. Truthfully I think I liked Ozzys solo career more than I liked the Black Sabbath days, but it was still good. Lots of variety on here, loved changes.
I’m glad I listened to this twice. In the morning I thought it was just ok, but on my way home from work driving, sun shining, music blasting I really connected with the record a lot more. The back half of the album hit a lot harder for me.
I liked this other than the other bob marley album I had. Obviously it had some of his iconic songs. I think I also liked the remastered version I listened to because I could clearly hear him singing and hear the instruments.
I knew karma chameleon. But the rest of the album kinda sounded like the same thing arranged differently. The songs were a little bit too long for how repetitive they were. I did like that the final track was an instrumental interlude that really cut me back to reality with how sharply it contrasts the vibe of the album.
Wow. Blew me away. Felt like a musical in a way- I haven’t really liked the other concept albums on the list to this point but obviously this is in a different caliber. I understand why it has stood the test of time- and how its perception has been shifted compared to its initial release and how it is revered now.
I enjoyed this album. Glad to have some female representation on this list when it’s so tilted toward the male rockers. I actually had to listen to some of the songs twice and I enjoyed it more on my second listen.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. Some of the bars and rapping are a little tiresome, but the production on this is very cool. Reminds me of a concept album but more in the experimental hip hop space. I think it’s an interesting inclusion on the list, though I wish it felt more cohesive or polished and flowed together better.
This went on for what felt like forever. Mirroring some of the reviews here, he has a great voice but it’s also so irritating at times. Some fun samples throughout, but I’m not sure I’d want to listen to this again.
Im just glad there were no words. Was a smooth play from start to finish. I’m still not understanding jazz as a whole genre. Maybe it will click for me at some point on this list.
This was really interesting! Love that it was their debut as a group. The genre blending of the album really worked and I loved how all the rhythms just sort of rolled and worked together. I’m less into the yell-singing but I understand that’s kind of a vibe of its own. Overall a very solid album!
My only other exposure to Tom Waits was Nighthawks at the Diner on this list, which may be the strongest 1 I’ve given to date out of my 100 albums. This was substantially better. I didn’t love it, but it actually sounded like an attempt at making music. I actually really enjoyed some of the slower songs on the record, but the voice/gristly/evil delivery of the rest of the songs just really isn’t grooving with me.
The singles run on this album is crazy. If you asked me to name Michael Jackson songs, they would be on this album. If there were half ratings I think this would score a 4.5 but I will round it up for its staying power.
Not a huge hip hop fan but this was ok. It was very vulgar, but the delivery was crisp and clear and the beat was a good pace to actually listen to the lyrics.
Such a sad album. Her voice is so unique and full of soul and depth. The songs are fun. For as much rock that is on this list, this album stands out amongst that. It’s funny that when I was younger, I thought Amy Winehouse was before my time, not realizing she was alive and active artist at the time. Will always enjoy this record.
Very consistent album start to finish, which is as much of a strength as it is a weakness for me. The flow, delivery, and overall vibe didn’t vary that much from start to finish. I love the clarity and annunciation, the beats are great, fundamentally it’s just not something I’d find myself choosing to listen to on my own. Not bad!
This is probably a 3 but I grew up on Linkin Park so had to bump to a 4. I think the rapping bits are weak and are not really my style, but the overall vibe and angst captured here is great. I love this album.
I was impressed by this album! Not familiar with their work at all. Immediately reminded me of more rock version of Lana Del Rey. And funnily enough, when the record had finished it auto played right into her. Rock bands with lead female vocals just make sense. Would listen again!
This was an ok album. Reading the Wikipedia description comparing them to nirvana is crazy because I wouldn’t have made that comparison on my own. But it was solid alt rock. I didn’t mind.
Didn’t know anything about the artists until I read the reviews and saw some strong opinions. Without all that context, this could have been a 4. I loved the long, rocking guitar solos and duets. However, this is just way too long and could be much more concisely done. For that reason I am giving this 3.
I enjoyed this. I definitely notice a break in the albums post 2000- where the production and recording all became much more crisp. Overall, this was a decent listen. I found myself wanting to like it more. There’s a lot of things here that work for me but ultimately it didn’t have a standout song or moment for me.
Hated that it was a live album. Hated that it was a double album. Maybe would have been fine at 45 minutes but this dragged on too long.
This was good! The 17 minute song at the end was crazy. The album didn’t overstay its time. The organ was really interesting throughout… reminded me of weddings. And also video games. Very cool contrast between all of the instruments.
This was an exceptional album. Probably feeling a little biased since I had Abbey Road as my first Beatles album on this site. The record starts strong but kinda lost me in the middle. I think this is a solid 4.5 album but I will round it down.
I did not like this. It was slow. Boring. Suicide was especially egregious. Im more accustomed to the psychedelic sort of vibe working better in a rock styling and I think it does work better in that genre. This was a chore to get through.
I enjoyed this album! I recognized the big hits but I didn’t realize that they all came from the same album. Not only that, I’m familiar with the originals but I’ve also heard several artists cover these songs. Fun album from start to finish. Heart of glass is a crazy good song.
Did not really enjoy this. The metal aspects and some of the production are fine, but the vocals leave something to be desired. I actually don’t even mind the screaming, and I can see the parallels to other metal bands in their delivery and intonation and anger, but this delivery was just a little grating and corny to me. I wanted to like it more.
This was a good listen! I’ve been having a major Oasis phase and though I do see some parallels… this feels a little more flat. Some of the production is incredible, like On Your Own. Essex Dogs was an interesting way to cap off the record as well. Damon has such a unique voice I immediately recognized it when I started listening. I’ve only heard his gorillaz work! Overall, it was decent. On a better day I might lean closer to 4 but I think a 3 is justifiable.
Heavy 90s vibes here. I definitely have a soft spot for this sort of sound. It’s pretty safe in terms of production. I recognized drive, and I really liked pardon me. Working through this list has made me realize I am more partial to the nu metal sound than traditional metal. Which maybe means I don’t like metal but I did enjoy this haha.
Really enjoyed this! Very smooth rock. As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, there’s so many layers to the sound. Lots of different instruments featured on the record too!
I liked this album! Like many of the other commenters have hit on, this list has so many britpop groups… most of which I am unfamiliar with. This was an easy listen. The genre influences definitely bounce around. I also love the album cover of the greyhounds. I think the first half of the album was stronger.
