1001 Albums Summary

This dropped while I was training for the 2015 Richmond Marathon and also the birth of our first son. The marathon playlist was a weird combo of both Kendrick and John Denver. Classic. Marathon at 45, 3:40 and change.

Holiday magic. What else can you say?

Probably best album from my birth year. Cecilia still such a banger.

I’ve listened to this so many times pre-2000, that I don’t know if I need to give it another listen today. It might diminish it in ways that time does. I think it was a 9/10 then hopefully it still is. I’ll give it a solid four stars.

Got about half through. Maybe the second half gets beyond meh 😐. Not feeling it.

God damn this album cover is great. Fairytale in NY will always speak to my time in Saskatoon, SK. And my desperate need to get out. Listening to this album for the first time all the way through seems a little silly now and a little repetitive. Does ‘Fall From Grace’ and ‘Fairytale’ work well in any number of compilations? Absolutely. Could I listen to this entire album twice a year? Doubtful.

If you would have told me this was released in 1996, I would’ve totally believed you. Without Trainspotting, I don’t know how many people would have heard of this. One of the best, most appropriate soundtracks of all time. Renton channels Iggy and never has a soundtrack better accompanied the filmed source material.

Took a stroll down memory lane and found ‘Guerolito’ which was a compilation of the full album worth of remixes. Not as good as the originals, but they never are. Just different. Probably my third or fourth favorite Beck album. Solid 7/10. I always remember this tour, since it was right in the middle of the RC. Bonnie Y brought in all the iron-one that were sold at merch for me to stick on their own T’s. When asked at the concert whether she wanted them applied to tees - she just let them know that ‘she has a guy’.

Nothing stood out here. Would I give it another chance? Maybe.

Whoa. Tour de force. Prob shouldn’t have sat on this one for thirty years.

First year grad school. The first important CD of that new era for me. In the days before the internet it would be years before I had known of the web of music that preceded the latest Bob Mould offering. I am since much more Bob Mould aware. Special thanks to Marla in undergrad Chem lab that wrongly assumed I already knew who this was.

Remember iTunes? This would have been exhibit A of nobody buying the album and spending $0.99 for Paper Planes. Nobody bought this album. And the 18 people that did, they just skipped down to Paper Planes and played it on repeat. Given all that, it’s pretty good. Probably couldn’t make it through twice.

The Jeremy and Jeremy performance in Deliver Me From Nowhere was a great insight to this album. I had listened to this album off and on for the better part of forty years and the story behind it is likely much better than the following album. While it’s probably my fourth or fifth favorite Springsteen album, it’s still a five star banger.

Pretty boring. Don’t get jazz. Yet.

Alright - listened to this for the first time. Beginning to end. First time through thought it sounded super jazzy. The second time funky. Better the second time

Played it as background. Probably better as an in your face alternative.

I just don’t get this one.

This entire album sounds like it could be an entire Tarantino soundtrack. I’m guessing every cool cat in 1971 owned a copy of this on 8-track similar to 1994 when everyone had a copy of REM monster.

It’s hard not to listen to this with jaded 55 year old ears and not hear tinges of parody. At the time this was a serious hard rock/ metal that would have at fist had a very distinct audience. As it softened like warm butter, or the world hardened this became a mega hit. Kudos Metallica for teaching future generations how to rock.

Ugh. I own this. I had to check the date to remind me that even at 27 years old, the frontal lobe has not matured enough to decipher hype from excellence. I listened to exactly 1:49 min before I had to turn it off. To my credit, I don’t think I’ve listened to the entirety of this album.

I think solid. Listened to the first half.

Finally some Pixies. Not my favorite Pixies but the entire catalog is five stars aside from Trompe Le Monde and Caribou. IMHO. Tony’s Theme - does it get any better than that?

Didn’t realize how influential this album must have been for David Bowie.

Sounds a little dated now. But that was a thing back then. Incorporating some movie quotes into the music… It’s got a vibe.

I think this is probably a four star album, but I only know one song. There’s got to be a reason I haven’t heard the entire thing in 50 years. And I still haven’t. I’m docking it a star for that.

I don’t really get blues either.

So good, listened to twice in a row.

I had misremembered the sequencing of this album, so much so that by the time Tusk finally played I had thought I had missed it during the first hour. This is really a much more solid album than I remember and it is probably still only my fourth or fifth favorite from Fleetwood Mac. Solid member of the catalog. Maybe it will move up the rankings.

Perfect. Will try to listen at home loud. Definitely a top 100 album of all time.

I got good JM Jarre vibes from the early 80s. It’s why CDs were invented.

I don’t own this CD. Though I’ve heard it hundreds of times. At first when I saw the cover I was thinking Georgia Satellites. At the time I probably would have given this a 3-star review just because it wasn’t my thing in 1990. It probably still isn’t, but it just seems so familiar, it seems easy. And now I guess it’s classic.

Third or fourth favorite Bowie album.

Core memory album. There probably isn’t a bigger, better album in my canon of defining albums. This one I discovered by myself, for myself. Stranger in a strange land, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I’m thinking back to where I would have bought this, and I can’t place it. I see a dump bin in the front and I can’t quite place the facade or any of the particulars. I can’t even remember a record store in Saskatoon.

These Beau Brummels have absolutely nothing to do with Billy Joel’s Beau Brummel babies. I gave it have a chance. What a great album. Added it to the Library.

Had to knock it down a star since it killed the Oilers five game win streak. Not my favorite, but I mostly get it. Unlike jazz.

There’s some famous quote about everybody that purchased the Velvet Underground album started a band. Something like that. Not sure about Liz Phair - but everybody who bought this loved loved fucking music. Not sure how many started bands. I didn’t.

I’ll default to four stars. It will take another few listens to establish this one.

Anything Canadian is likely going to get four stars and above. I’ll give this one five and verify later this week.

Coming of age shouldn’t mean twenty years old, but maybe I was a late bloomer, at least musically. This is definitely a landmark album and one that I add to my list.

This album will always remind me of my first year living in the city. $0 in the bank, mostly not a care in the world. Getting that first job and feeling like I won the lottery every two weeks. Discovering the city and always on the hunt for music. I bought this down in St. Marks Place and its newness vibed with mine.
