giving me such a dense album for literally my first day on this site with me being a total beginner to rap is definitely a choice. while the beats stuck with me right away i had to go home and spend a couple hours looking over the lyrics for the album to really hit. i don't think anything in it will make my playlist but it's really easy to tell why people think it's one of the best hiphop albums ever. i admire it from afar like i'm looking at a famous painting behind some glass and red rope at a museum
fave track: one love
some albums are really meant to be listened to live and i think that's the case here. although blues is a bit of a hit or miss genre for me, i did enjoy this, but i felt like i was missing something huge by just listening to it on spotify instead of being there in the crowd myself. i'm sure if i was there, i'd give it a high 4. the recording is portraying the live experience the absolute best it can, but it'll never reach the real thing
also unfortunately i'm a shuffle listener and i don't think any individual track in this album would sound good shuffled in a random playlist. it's a sit down and listen to the whole thing in one sitting experiences
fave track: worry, worry

girl idk what you're yapping about this is great

when i saw the folk tag i was dreading this because i really do not like folk music. but when the first song started i was like oh! it might be nice! then the rest of the album played. i could not care less about this type of music and i don't understand why anyone would. i'm so sorry
the only track that made me feel some semblance of emotion was the last one, but even then it felt kind of heavy-handed. thank the heavens that this was short, unlike some other folk albums i've listened to and similarly disliked
fave track: scarborough fair / canticle
i really wanted to like this but it didn't catch my attention outside of a few sections (the few sections mostly being guitar solos). some fun ideas here and there but nothing that stuck with me. also it being mysteriously not on streaming made it kind of annoying to look for but that's no fault of the music
fave track: one nation under a groove
a chunk of the songs lacked a "bite" (for lack of a better word) that made them fail to keep my interest but there are definitely a few gems here and there. it caught my attention whenever they picked up the tempo. i'm not really a fan of the female vocalist
i'm a bit sad that i don't like this more because i'm sure the people who like this are really cool. i wouldn't complain about hear this playing in the background at some kinda gathering but i think i'm a bit too much of a loser to ever find myself in that situation
fave track: chapel hill
always heard of this band but never listened. when i saw the comments about the lead singer's voice being grating i thought it was an exaggeration but they were immediately proven right. the production isn't bad. it's quite my taste at times. but the vocals are SO awful that i couldn't even focus on it. he sings like when you're at karaoke and you're not very good at singing, so you do silly voices to hide your embarrassment and make all of your friends laugh instead. at least it kept the album from being completely boring because i spent half of it with my face twisted in a grimace (total lie) (i was unbearably bored) (it sapped my energy like a parasite)
fave track: 1979
awful spotify tagging that'll mess up my lastfm aside, i actually liked this one quite a bit. i like her voice, i like the instrumentation, i like the dark and melancholy tone... i don't really know what else to say. i just enjoyed it
i see people complaining that it's too "cheesy," "theatrical," or "dramatic," but i found that to be the best part. it brings to mind the image of a woman hugging her large coat around her and looking wistfully out into who-knows-where as the wind whips her hair around, and it's so fucking corny and outdated, and that's what makes it good. like of course the song with french lyrics features an accordion in the outro. she's literally looking camp right in the eye
i actually wish it was even MORE melodramatic because it lost my interest for a bit in the middle. maybe it's because i spent my entire teenagehood in my school's choir and theatre departments. once a theatre kid, always a theatre kid. we should all have more fun
fave track: the case continues
i tried hard to get myself to focus on the lyrics so i could at least give this a 2 but it's so hard when the performance is this monotonous and devoid of emotion. the greatest lyricist in the world couldn't get me to care about his music when it sounds like the audio version of stale bread crusts
fave track: so long, marianne
really surprised by this one. i expected it to be a 2 at best but i enjoyed it. fun, dreamy production, and i like the lead singer. it's almost like a stereotype of what 80s music sounds like (in a good way). it didn't blow me away but it's good, easy listening
fave track: when love breaks down
it's... another blues live album! i actually like blues a lot. i lied last time. it's just that i can't give any blues live album higher than a 3 because listening to them gives me massive fomo I SHOULD BE THEREEEEE
fave track: please please please/you've got the power/i found someone
i was excited to listen to this after seeing people describe it as dark, moody, and gothic. and like not to be that guy but is the dark and moody in the room with us? because the lights are very much on in here
fave track: porcupine
i've always heard of queen. everyone has. but as someone young who grew up listening to weird kid music i never actually listened to them. i did have high expectations knowing their track record and they were actually met! and then they lost me and then they had me again towards the end. so i don't know really. even the tracks i liked aren't something i find myself returning to personally, but i did thoroughly enjoy them while i was listening
by the way i wish groups pre-90s would stop getting their albums reprinted on digital with those "20whatever remaster" tags tacked onto the end of the track names because wow that is ugly
fave track: father to son
i was excited when i saw the genre tags but this is kinda boring not gonna lie.. i feel this way about a lot of other 60s releases regardless of the genre so i think this era of music is just really not for me
fave track: thru the rhythm
i've had a conviction that ambient is one of those genres i just can't bring myself to enjoy because i listened to one rather famous ambient project and found it really boring, so i thought i'd think the same of this one but i really liked it actually!
i've had a specific song on my playlist and i've been wanting more stuff like it for a while and this is exactly that. happy! got earthbound vibes from this one (MASSIVE COMPLIMENT) i also got slight maplestory ost vibes omg am i crazy. do i sound stupid
do you know that era of cgi from the early 90s when they were still trying to figure out how it worked so people put out these really weird, esoteric, liminal short films/rendered images with no plot and only trippy animated 3d visuals to show what they could do? this sounds like that
the only thing is that i'm not sure when i'd listen to this because it's outside of my usual realm. but i think i should just listen to it more and it'll find its place in my playlist eventually
amazing chill
fave track: best friend, paranoia

another blues album so i thought i was going to just give it the same review as i did the others, but something about this one was a just a tiny bit dull in comparison to the others. still the same score as all the others though
fave track: i've got my mojo working
i don't like the way some of you talk about women in pop music
fave track: i'm ok
just kind of an average rock album to me idk. doesn't inspire much emotion. kinda monotonous. didn't hate it but i'll forget about it as soon as the day is over
y'all seem to really hate this elvis costello guy what's the lore there
fave track: i want you
most fitting artist name in music history
fave track: talisman
pink floyd fans when they tell you to wait 8 minutes for the song to get to the good part
fave track: shine on you crazy diamond (pts. 1-5)
i'm conflicted and a bit sad that i am... i really like this but also it falls just short for me :( i love the instrumentals but the toplines leave something to be desired. the melodies just aren't compelling to me BUTTTTT the backing tracks are so good that i'm compelled to keep giving it chances until it fully clicks. so in a way this is a provisional 4
i do think it's just a touch too long though
fave track: bag lady
i personally think we should smack the person who came up with the "world music" genre upside the head because i've heard folk music from every continent and somehow all of them are just classified as world music in the west. it's frankly insulting
anyway i agree with what most people seem to think about this. it's pleasant listening. really beautiful at times. but does get repetitive quickly. i don't think i'll ever return but i had a good time while i was listening to it
fave track: soukura
never listened to them but i've always heard the name. coming from someone who knows literally zero things about them i was a little... let down? i don't know maybe i just expected something in a heavier direction. it was okay!
fave track: supernaut
didn't think much of this one. some interesting tidbits here and there but it just felt kinda average to me. there's some painfully outdated sounds, especially in the vocal performance. unfortunately outdated indie rock from this era isn't really charming. it just gives quirky millennial burger joint
fave track: dlz
i'm glad to see that white people making their artist names randomly themed after japan isn't just something that popped up around the 2010s. it's fitting here because with the lead singer's voice i expected him to start wailing out a vkei song any second
fave track: halloween
i do like it i like it so much but omg 3 hours is ridiculous. surely there's a better way to include ella fitzgerald in this list?
if i owned a cute little cafe this would be played back to back at least once a week but since i do not im just kinda sitting at work really wanting to listen to something else. i did get through the entire thing though. it's a long track run but it's not unpleasant by anyyyyy means. like never in any universe does this deserve less than a 3
fave track: by strauss
i've always admired her but didn't really tune into her music. this record is a bit too sleepy for me but i will continue to NEVER play about amy as a person. the fact that she released this at only 19 is both astonishing and depressing
these days i see people trying to crown amy winehouse daughters by saying that every rising pop girl who does even slightly jazzy music is "like amy." but now that ive finally given one of her albums a full listen i understand how ridiculous that is. not even close girl.....
fave track: in my bed
really like this guy's voice and the really gravelly sound to it. also he knows how to have fun! love his interactions with the crowd and had lots of fun even though i don't usually enjoy spoken word. probably the most fun i could have while also admitting that i probably won't listen to this on the regular. just because i don't think it fits into my daily playlist
fave track: putnam county

i don't really get ittttt i'm sorry. i fail to hear anything enjoyable to me personally here. this is my bias against folk music talking again isn't? i'm so sorry. i promised i wouldn't do this again. uhhh i didn't totally dislike it! i liked the atmosphere for some of the songs!
fave track: the old man's back again
i wanted to like it more than i did because i've always been interested in this band but it didn't quite hit for me. performance felt just a bit whiny in parts.. but i did like it more than albums from the 50s-80s i've listened to on here. i didn't want to submit to this notion but yeah music does change throughout the ages and i'm just a zoomer chud loser so of course i like the 90s-2010s more
fave track: electric feel
i wanted to like this a lot more than i do but something is holding me back... it feels maybe just a bit too digestible? i think i sound crazy
i was gonna save my rating for until i could sit down with it with more focus but i don't think it'd bump my score up or down if i did
fave track: one of them
this actually didn't end up sounding like what i expected but i liked it! i really dig the mood and the instrumentation is soooo good. i dont really like this kind of vocal tone though. and i dont think the album as a whole is too long but some of the songs are. the instrumental interludes were actually kinda more interesting than the vocal tracks
interesting little gem. this is what i would imagine an ispy image would sound like if you turned it into music. particularly the one with all the wooden blocks and little cars. yall know the one
fave track: another pearl

the one song that i liked was so much better than the rest of this album that you could've told me it's a different band and i would've believed you
fave track: my generation

fave track: another girl, another planet

fave track: 99 pounds
i think i just don't like this specific sound of rock and its surrounding genres but its okay because im trying. this one isnt bad
fave track: morning glory
any of my australian friends will tell you that's probably not true
fave track: brainwashed
i've gotten like 4 british rock albums in a row so i'm starting to get a bit burnt out but this one is actually interesting. they get a bit silly with it
kinda music the main cast of night in the woods would like
fave track: skeleton key
i just know there's an og 2013 tumblr hipster who does NOT play about this album
fave track: north american scum
i was gonna make a snide comment along the lines of "i bet this would go hard if i was a 45 old man" but i actually kinda liked it.... maybe im the 45 year old man
fave track: you gotta move

fave track: black wave / bad vibrations

fave track: the real slim shady
i feel especially bad about this rating because i respect this album a lot but it's just not music i find myself enjoying listening. i'm sorry
fave track: if not now...
is this seriously the beyonce album they chose to put on this list when it's not at all her best work
fave track: blue
i'm starting to fear that i just don't really like rock music
fave track: orange crush
there were some real moments of beauty in here but i found myself unable to care about a lot of it. and it felt a bit corny at times? i can name an album with a similar style of writing that i liked more because it felt like it wasn't taking itself as seriously. is what i mean
fave track: sun forest
me putting this on the aux trying to impress vampire trade
fave track: sacred
i'm sat here wondering if i just dont like music as much as i previously thought i did or if this list is just majorly skewed towards genres that i find boring
fave track: tokoloshe man
it's nothing i haven't heard before but that doesn't mean it's bad. i like it! because it's my taste! #pureofheart
fave track: big eyes
i was SO scared that i wouldn't like this because i haven't liked any of the other acclaimed albums ive listened to on here so far. so im really happy to report that i actually loved this
masterful song writing. so easy to pick up and definitely a crowd pleaser but not at all dull. i think this is just music for everyone
fave track: movin' out (anthony's song)
had the scariest experience of my life when i was listening to the song titled "birmingham" and a lady with the last name birmingham came up to my desk at work
i listened to my first 1st gen kpop album just the other day and i think ive about had enough of people saying the n word when they have no place to. i'll just stick with the toy story song here thanks
fave track: kingfish
i don't have as much to say about this as i probably should because i don't have enough context to understand why this album is so revolutionary but.. i mean i liked it! that's something right
fave track: bargain
it's definitely music
fave track: allergies
this is fun! and weird! there were some parts that reminded me of some k-indie bands i like and it made me want something more serious and emotional but then they went back to the fun weird stuff and i liked it all over again. a bit repetitive though
fave track: london loves
when i started this list nobody told me that it would be 70% okay-ish rock albums that i wouldn't gag at if it shoved itself down my throat. guess that's my fault
fave track: fillmore jive
^ and it's not even close
the individual songs didn't really stand out to me. they all kinda sounded the same but not bad! i liked it still. and an electric live performance to boot. it's a good time
fave track: darlin' companion
i was really dreading this one because he's my first repeat artist in this list and i hated his first album so much that it made me decide i hated 2 whole genres of music. but instantly this one is more my speed. what a difference 50 years can make! it's still a bit too slow and monotonous for my taste but i like it more than my last listen from him. it makes it hit harder seeing that he passed just a few months after this came out
bro's all up in my ear tho. actually i think that's a big reason why i like this one more
fave track: leaving the table
