Is This It - The Strokes, Indie Rock, 2001 - USA, 29.5.26 The Strokes' debut album is a energetic blend of old meets new - the grittiness and more DIY feel of an album you feel like you'd hear back in the booming days of 70s rock with the likes of The Doors, with a sprinkle of punk elements. Yet, lyrically in particular, the sound is modern, opening the doors to a new era of rock and indie in the 2000s, to the likes of The Libertines and Arctic Monkeys. I suppose, in essence, that's a definition of timeless. The overall sound is simple, but in a way that makes you want to listen closer. Lyrically, Casablancas talks of the lives, relationships and struggles of urban youth, namely in New York, but it's accessible enough that it immediately gave me flashbacks to the gritty adolescent shows of Channel 4 in its hayday - Skins, Misfits, Inbetweeners. Overall, this album just takes the awards for ~cool~.
