Thank God the song from XXX is on this one! While I didn’t love the album overall it made me feel like seeing Rammstein live would be a hella good time. Like all metal/industrial metal it’s a little silly and the German man purring in my ears the whole time didn’t help. I kept picturing people listening to this and feeling tough and it just kept making me laugh. Like every user submitted album it’s definitely worth a listen though

This was really good

Album #73 (1001 challenge extended): "Mutter" by Rammstein (2001) "Mutter" is the third studio album by German Neue Deutsche Härte band Rammstein. Neue Deutsche Härte (dance metal) and industrial metal are the Wiki-listed genres. Six songs were released as singles. The bandmembers included Till Lindemann (vocals), Richard Kruspe (lead guitar), Paul Landers (rhythm guitar), Christian Lorenz (keyboards), Oliver Riedel (bass) and Christoph Schneider (drums). Commercially, the album reached #77 in the US and #86 in the UK and, critically, it had decent reviews. "Mein Herz brennt" ("My Heart Burns") opens the album. A melancholic synth and creepy talking. Tinny drums which go pounding. Loud guitars and a funky-ish bass enter. The loud-soft-loud. Hmmm...not as bad as I was expecting. A marching sound starts "Links 2 3 4" ("Left 2 3 4"). Late 80's/early 90's Ministry industrial guitars and beat. A la "Just One Fix." Whispering and a hair metal sounding guitar solo. A ticking sound and a voice counting up to 11 start the first-released single "Sonne"("Sun"). Hey, I took German in high school and can count up to eleven too. A heavy guitar riff and pounding drums. Evil-sounding vocals. Dramatic background synths and a operatic female backing vocals. "Freuer frei!"("Open Fire") starts harder with a dance industrial beat and a buzzing guitar. We are firmly in industrial music territory now. Sirens and more opera-like backing vocals. After a few songs featuring synths and strings, they're back to industrial music in "Rein raus"("In Out"). The repeating guitar riff and Lindemann repeating the title. A song about sex (see title). An actual middle eight with synth-key strikes and various vocals. A screeching guitar and dramatic synth end. Well, I have to admit that I expected a lot worse. Industrial and dramatic. Heavy repetitive guitar riffs and tinny and pounding drums sometimes with dance beat. Most songs have loud and present synths and/or synth strings. Lindemann has deep and authoritative vocals which can be chanting and whispering as well. The fact that the vocals are in German adds to the sinisterness for some reason. I can't say I'm a fan of all of this album but when they went late 80's/early 90's industrial Ministry, it sounded pretty bad ass. And for that, if you're a fan of that music, this is worth a listen. 3 out of 5

I have a friend who is a huge Rammstein fan. I’ve always been scared off by my lack of understanding the language. I am really happy I’ve listened to this. The flow and feel and emotion carry through whether you speak German or not. The album hangs together well as a cohesive piece.

Another baffling omission. I have never really been a fan of the band, but I appreciate what they are doing. Speaking German, I understand the songs are about which is always very German. My personal rating: 3/5 My rating relative to the list: 4/5 Should this have been included on the original list? Yes.

Good excuse to polish up my rusty German. Rammstein again delivers a solid metal outing on this LP, not re-inventing the wheel but delivering a pretty damn good wheel regardless. German metal always has a certain polished, melodic heaviness to it, graceful yet distorted progressions pairing well against the language’s sharp edges. Cool add and an enjoyable listen.

Loved Rammstein back when this album released. It holds up pretty well in my opinion. Still gets me head banging.

Neue Deutsche Härte, industrial metal. Lo esperado de Rammstein. Un 4.

An absolute classic

eh, not really my thing, but I can see the appeal - 6/10

Been avoiding Rammstein so long thinking they were overrated. But this was surprisingly good

Aw hell yeah Rammstein rocks! Good stuff.

Me gusta más Sehnsucht, pero este no está mal.

fuckin' rad. Haven't listened to these guys in ages

Hell yeah! A great album, from a time in my life when I was exploring this style of music, and I knew just enough German that it didn't matter that genius.com didn't exist yet! Heavy and hard, and an album that demands to be played loud - what's not to love!

I wanted it to go harder.

The strength of this album is it's simpel riffs of really short guitar notes, that make it sound very 'strict'. It produced a lot of Rammstein's best known song, and surely is a banger of an album

👎🏻

Onhan se Rammstein aika hauskaa kuunnella, varmaan hauskempaa vielä jos ymmärtäisi saksaa. Maksimaalista.

A really great introduction to industrial metal. Some of these songs could probably be considered classics now, and the whole album has a huge, distinctive sound. You almost forget they’re singing in German, the music and Till Lindemann’s delivery are so powerful that the language barely matters.

Another band I've heard about forever but hardly heard any of. Happy to read that the kind of persistent suggestions of, you know, Nazi-sympathist dogwhistles seem to be pretty much baseless. The German flavor of America's Satanic Panic, to be applied to all deep-n- dark scary music, maybe. Musically it seemed pretty standard metal, a little more operatic and theatrical than I expected. Not really for me, that vocal affect I don't much care for in much metal is all that much more so delivered in Teutonic growling. I didn't dislike it though.

Wow I can see how this had a lot of influence… really great album! Spieluhr was so great I listened a few times and looked up a translation. Surprising that of the 6 songs released as singles off this album this wasn’t one of them, nor was Zwitter which is another favorite. This kind of fun dark industrial metal appeals to me a great deal. Definitely an album worth listening to some more. Lots of fun even though I mostly have no idea what they are singing about.

In which industrial metal broke containment and caught on a little more in the anglo world. In the time since this came out I've picked up enough german to understand most of the lyrics, which is mostly useful for revealing that Rammstein is very funny. Like for all the intensity of their music, they distinctly have a sense of humor and irony about them. It's a fun extra layer. Bumping them an extra star for cultural relevance, they really should have had something show up on the main list.

The juxtaposition of the utterly silly (the music) and the utterly art-ponce bullshit is very pronounced here. The music is campy industrial with the dials turned up to eleven. The visuals of the album sleeve are, as alluded to, a pinnacle of art ponce. Maybe not pinnacle. Nadir. Ultimately, Rammstein are far more on the silly side - and I wish they'd properly embrace that in the way that (say) Rob Zombie did in essentially the same genre, because it'd be much easier to justify the time for it. The music is what we're here for though, ultimately, and yes - it's pretty good. Not great, mainly because they do approach things from a very precise, meticulously planned hyper-spectacle mindset, but for a time in the early 2000s this sort of thing was lapped up by people who saw the club scenes in The Matrix and either wanted to be Monica Bellucci or wanted to be dommed by Monica Bellucci.

Such a gimme pick that I've completely forgotten this wasn't on the original list. No Rammstein album was for some reason. Certified classic. Legendary 6 track run of some of the biggest industrial metal hits of all time, and the second half ain't too shabby either. Geiler Scheiss, 5/5.

Standouts: Sonne, Ich Will, Mutter Really great sound. Loved the album when it came out - so listening to it now in my old age it brings back some good memories. Glad to see this added to the list. 4/5

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Mein herz brennt, Sonne, Mutter, Zwitter

Mutter is the third album of German metal band Rammstein. This type of music style is called Neue Deutsche Härte, a crossover style drawing from Neue Deutsche Welle, alternative metal, groove metal, electro-industrial and techno. I think Rammstein also owes a lot to Die Krupps as a Industrial Metal band. As on all Rammstein albums this album also contains funny lyrics that are a bit polarizing also. This album is their first album with ballad like songs (f.e. "Mutter") that work out fine. Personally I prefer Sehnsucht, their second an international breakthrough album. Still Rammstein is not a band to listen to on an album, you should see them live. Their live shows are among the best in visual, pyrotechnical and chorographical design and a treat to attend.

Rammstein isn’t my thing, but it’s not bad for what it is

Rammstein is a band I have been aware of since as long as I can remember but haven’t ever really listened to them because it’s not my type of music. This album hasn’t changed my mind but full respect to them.

Sure sounds like Rammstein
