You've Come a Long Way Baby
Fatboy SlimIncredibly repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly rep rep repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly rep repetitive.
Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly rep rep repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly rep repetitive.
Don't like this much as the other Lana albums. The super high-pitched voice that enters into these songs is grating. I appreciate the range, but it's hard to listen to for an entire album and breaks up what are otherwise quite pleasing songs. All that said, I appreciate the melodic setting of Lana's albums - they are like floating on a cloud. Until you come crashing down because of the high-pitched squeal, of course.
Sometimes I wonder how these albums got picked and if this is just a random album generator... Fewer than 4M stream total for this 1982 album and it's easy to understand why. Turning it off. Unlistenable. Horrible. This is supposed to be music?
What can I say... I'll buy into the hype. Adele has an incredible voice, her songs are catchy, sultry, emotional, fun. The entire album is a solid piece of work, and easy to listen through all the way. In fact, I'm on #3 right now. She has clearly earned diva status with songs that will likely persist for decades.
Liking the slower Elvis songs. First time to go through an Elvis album and I can see the lasting appeal.
It's ok. I can't tell if they copied the B52s, or if the B52s copied them... Probably more a 2.5 stars, but I'll round up to a solid 3.
It's a fun album with a distinct sound. I wouldn't mind putting the Yeah Yeah Yeahs into a rotation of music to listen to more often than once, so for that, 4 stars. The acoustic songs at the end of the album are also a nice touch. Great to hear the song without the heavy synth presence.
Eclectic. The first song on the album, and the most played, is definitely the worst. If you can make it through that one, the album gets quite a bit better. Probably gets better again if you're tripping on some kind of substance - but I wouldn't know. It's fine. Average. 3 stars.
If I'm the drummer of Offspring, I'm ripped, super toned and worn out af after each concert. High energy music that lacks some of the later production qualities. This was Offspring before they sold out. Also includes the ultimate college youth song, Self Esteem. This song alone propels it into 4-star territory.
Rock and roll with some bluesy-ness to it. The lead singer has a distinct voice and sound, which is good if you dig it, because there's not much change.
Song 1 sounds like Elton John did it. Instruments almost drown out the singer. This album has become incredibly repetitive for me. Slow and non-changing drum beats in 4/4 time have me bored.
Sounds like a circus. Didn't really like it.
Nice album, good variety. Sounds like Jimmy Fallon singing....
Too much trumpet... Another Jazz album autoplayed right after this and I immediately thought... ahhh, that's better.
Nope. Not sure how this album made the list. 53M listens on the first song and then a combined 17.3M listens for the rest of the 13 songs.
Really like this album. Nice sound quality to it, relaxing, a bit ethereal. Overall very nice.
Interesting Irish drinking song album. Each song is rather similar, but I don't mind it too much.
Was an ok album to pass the time.
Very repetitive - but that's their style.
Album is a bit all over the place. Some songs are nice, some got way too much radio play in the 90's and some are downright weird. Overall a nice break from other things I listen to, but won't rise to an album I've GOT to listen to.
Had to check on Song 2 if Bruce made a religious album. I'm just not a Springsteen person. Appreciate the band in the back, but the singing... uhg.
Classic album all the way.
Decent album.
There must be a reason that The O-Man only has 195k listens on an album that was released in 1987... Not a great album for me. Verging on one-star.
It's ok, nice background music.
Classic Rock, a bit more mellow. Definitely reminds me of the 1970's. I've been digging classic rock lately, so this album works well for me. Much better than Butthole Surfers.
Could listen to a instrumental version of this album much easier than this one with screaming. Glad I made it through the end. My ears need a break. Ouch.
Classic album. Takes me back.
I liked it. Quirky, but a nice sound.
Interesting sound - low production. Sounds like a guitar plugged strait into an amp and recorded. A bit dull.
Nice background music for getting work done.
A bit odd, a bit musical, a bit over the top in places. Had never heard of this person but don't mind the album.
I knew it was going to be weird... Just not sure how to listen to this. More drugs maybe?
Super chill. A few classic songs. Tough to rate the entire album a 5 though.
Very much the 1980s. Pretty good if you can tolerate the VERY 1980s sound this album. Going a bit further... this album has a very distant sound. A lot of echo, and it sounds like the singer is standing a few feet back from the microphone. Interesting sound.
Nothing much to comment on here. Sounds like it could have been from 4 decades ago - but also a sound similar to Fun.
High energy with some rock-a-billy undertones. Hah, undertones... that wasn't intended but it fits. Digging this album.
I just don't have the passion for Bruce of others. It's ok, but not something I'd ever choose to listen to.
If I were in a 1970s hippie commune, I'd expect to be sitting in a field with butterflies fluttering around, and us hippies perched on logs crafted into haphazard chairs listening to someone with a guitar singing folks songs while the rest of us swayed back and forth and attempted to harmonize. And if I did that, I'd have this album
Listened to this album half a dozen times to try to get a feel for it. Overall it was background music while I worked. A couple of songs stood out and caused me to take notice. Nothing grating. Good album.
All the classics!
Meh. 2nd David Bowie album on this list so far, and I'm just not impressed.
90s era rock. I never got into Radiohead like all of my college friends did. An album that's easy to listen to with no real weaknesses ... unless you don't like grunge era guitar.
Punk rock! And the best kind, short and quick. I could imagine that this album possibly influenced many an underground punk band afterwards.
Definitely a classic, but not the entire album. Some huge huts on this album and pure rock 'n' roll, but some songs are lacking, and the overall sound starts to get repetitive.
Kanye certainly has things to say. An album filled with a lot of variety, and perhaps one of my favorite songs that I didn't know existed - Runaway.
Sometimes I wonder how these albums got picked and if this is just a random album generator... Fewer than 4M stream total for this 1982 album and it's easy to understand why. Turning it off. Unlistenable. Horrible. This is supposed to be music?
Lighter punk feel. Easy listening for the style of music and a couple of the "hits" on this album.
Wow. Really enjoyed this album from start to finish. Variety, musicality and it even sounded like Prince singing a couple of times. I honestly had to check to make sure it wasn't. One of the better recommendations found via this 1001 albums list.
Actually don't mind the brass in this... I like it better than the 80's synth of the same era. Some definite Latin beats as well, which creates quite the aural offering.
I can't say I'm an expert on anything Beatles, but I tend to like their earlier poppy stuff better than there later weird/progressive things. This seems like one of those weird progressive albums, so must be later in their catalog. Not overly impressed by anything I heard - it's ok and therefore 3 stars.
Very Aphex Twin like... Repetitive, but not annoyingly so. Actually made some really nice background music for working. A couple of duds, but overall not too bad for being a relatively unplayed album.
Super mellow. Not sure how I feel about the falsetto in every single track. Nice groove, for sure.
Such a crisp voice on George Michael - it's one I've heard thousands of times in my life, but I'd never listened to an entire album cover to cover. I appreciate the vocal talent that is conveyed on this album.
Not terrible. I don't have any commentary to provide, but it was inoffensive and fairly calming to listen to.
I can appreciate the energy in this group, and am particularly impressed by some of the technical guitar playing. Reminds me of college when this type of music was in.
An entire album that sounds exactly the same? Decent sound, and enjoyable, but hard to distinguish one song from the next. They definitely have their "signature sound".
Wow. I guess I didn't realize that The Sonics were behind some of the more recognizable oldies that I know. The Beatles arrived into JFK airport in 1964, and with them brought a rock-n-roll sound that would influence generations of people (not to mention musicians). I imagine The Sonics - and their up beat, in your face music - at that same point in our country's history. And I wonder if the disgust by the older generations was as palpable, or even more so, than it was with the Beatles. Their sound is so loud that it frequently distorts the recording equipment being used - just a funny to think about this at the time they were part of.
80s diva, belting out hits without the benefit of auto-tune, but with the benefit of a lot of synthesizers, big hair and some saxophone cameos. I don't hate the album because I don't hate the sound of the 1980s.
I'm 2 songs in, and if this doesn't get better, not sure I can make it through the remaining 19 songs... I think I need more LSD for this album. Now 5 songs in - I just can't. The looping effects and screeching make this album un-listenable for me. I shudder to think what the remaining 16 songs have to hold.
She has a good voice, and the album does a good job focusing on her and not a lot of instrumentals or production. I appreciate a good singer, but the album just isn't for me. It's not bad though, so 3 stars.
Very much an 80-90s sound. Smooth and easy listening with a couple of 'classics' intermixed. At some point I'm expecting Paula Abdul to start singing....
I've heard a lot about Steely Dan and their production quality/perfection. I really want to dedicate more time to this album, but have now gone through it 3 times, playing in the background while I work. It's fine, but didn't stand out. Maybe this would change with nice headphones and a dedicated 40 minutes to do nothing but listen, but that's just not how I consume music.... All that said, these 3 stars are more a reflection on me, and less on them. Unless they deserve 3 stars, and then it's totally them.
Super groovy, man.
Yep. It's a Lenny Kravitz album. Amazing how the sound hasn't really changed and is so unmistakably Kravitz. A unique voice and style that has a groove, and it works.
I'm not going to say anything about Jimi that hasn't already been said. Dude can shred, and some people will enjoy it and others will only hear noise. I'm somewhere in between. I can appreciate the skills necessary to create this sound, but at the same time, it's a bit heavy on the ears. Found myself glad when the 1:15 of album was over.
I've always found Aerosmith to occupy an odd spot in the hair rock genre. The wailing of guitars and voices is certainly there, but in many ways it's a very musical band. Their songs have infiltrated my life, and I was reminded of this at a concert at Cheyenne Frontier Days a few years back. I didn't realize just how many Aerosmith songs I knew intimately. Pop40 radio sweethearts for sure. This album has a few of the classic songs we know and love from Aerosmith (Love in an Elevator?!). It doesn't get annoying and is a good listen from front to back - something that cannot be said of all hair metal bands from the 80s. Well above average and verging on 5 stars.
A fun album. Sounds like what I imagine a supper club in Miami the 1930s-1960s to sound like. Definitely have to like brass, as there is an ample amount of trumpeting throughout.
Sometimes these albums have songs that I wonder if they could actually ever be reproduced again. Song 4 of this album, and 19:52 is one such song. It sounds like someone tinkering in basement, and I'd be shocked if this same 19:52 could ever be reproduced. Anyway, that's neither here nor there. The album was ok. The screeching in the last track brought it down a half star for me, and that's why it's 2 starts instead of 3. I don't need car tires on pavement, blenders and grinding in music. The more screeches the lower the score. Simple.
OK, I made it through song 9 and I've heard enough. Death metal just ain't my thing and this didn't help. It's listenable, barely, just barely. 1.5stars rounding to 2.
Reverb or echo or something. A distinct sound that I always apply to the 1980s, and then checking the year of this album - yep 1987. It always sounds like the people are singing in a tunnel with the mic at a far end. It's an ok album. Nothing off-putting and has been a nice mix to work to. Can't say I've overly paid attention to it in the background, which also says something about how nothing really strikes or hits hard enough to be noticeable.
This album could be the soundtrack playing in the intro credits to a 1970s movie where the cops are chasing the badguys. Not a fan of the sound at all, and the saxophone could be dialed down a lot.
No screeching. Hooray!! A nice calm background beat session with subtle layering. Doesn't get too repetitive, and a nice groove to crush through some work. I particularly liked the last song "Alive Alone" - a bit more mellow. Ethereal, even.
Honestly... getting tired of "noise" albums. Screeching violin strings, or crazy guitar/amp feedback in a recording is ridiculous. The song Heroin dropped this down to a 2 star for me. And it's one of the more played songs on the album. I just don't get it.
I enjoy the sound of Elliot Smith but definitely have to be in the mood to listen to him for more than a couple of songs.
17 songs spanning a 46 minute album. Just my attention span! There's is quite an eclectic mix of songs on this album. Some psychedelic stuff, some surf rock, but all quick, to the point and done. Sometimes it's nice to be in an out in 3 minutes.
I just can't be bothered to write a review of this music. And that's exactly the mood I'm put into listening to this. Courtney couldn't sound more detached with a wish-I-wasn't-here sound. It's pretty easy to hear the Kurt Cobain influence in her style (or maybe he stole her style for his music?) Of course it's her sound, but I need a bit more spunk in my life before I try to go jump off of this building over here.
Hit or miss - sometimes it sounds like he's just yelling into the microphone, and other songs are nice to listen to. All unmistakably Van Morrison, but wish he'd leave the yelling to other artists.
A good mostly instrumental album to have on in the background.
If Young MC sang in a foreign language, this album would be him.
Fun instrumental. Great background music.
Nice and smooth, not really huge beats. Glad that the interlude's that were popular in 1990s hip-hop albums have somewhat been toned down.
Recording quality is pretty horrible and detracts from the overall album. Guitar is dialed way up, and gets repetitive. Originally marked it as 2 stars, not very enjoyable album overall. Dropping it to 1 star as I'm not going to finish this album. Terrible.
Just not a fan of Bruce. Voice is dull, lyrics are meh. I don't relate.
Yet ANOTHER 70's/80's punk album. A bit more musicality and not quite as repetitive as some of the other 658 punk albums that are being recommended here. It's fine, but nothing really standing out to me in any way.
Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly rep rep repetitive. Incredibly repetitive. Incredibly rep repetitive.
I don't know of a better Kanye album from front to back. Plenty of classics, and a hard working Kanye that hadn't yet made it as a rapper/front-man artist and wasn't totally weird yet.
Out of 325 albums suggested on this platform it really feels like 300 of them are 70s/80s era punk rock. Maybe I need to hear this many albums that all sound the same before I die, but it's grating on me. 8 minutes in and I'm longing for something less repetitive. If the entire album is this formulaic 50 minutes and 39 seconds is going to feel like a lifetime...
A bit shocking that this album came out a year later than Slippery When Wet, Look What the Cat Dragged In and the same year as Girls, Girls, Girls. When viewing from that perspective, I have a lot more respect for the album as a whole. REM was pushing a new sound onto the airways, and if you listen hard enough, the tinges of 80s synth retro can be heard within a mellow rock album. Maybe not the most ground breaking album of 1987, but considering the noise around them, a noble effort at creating a new sound of the moment. Maybe with more makeup, blaring guitar solos and lyrics about girls they would have had more than 2 singles come off of this album...?
I can't really get behind this album. It's rock, and I suppose in some way it might be catchy to some, but there aren't a lot of songs I've heard that I think I should go back and listen to. It's a shame that Black Hole Sun is the one that gets all the airplay, as it's not the best song on the album. Perhaps the most Top40 radio appropriate I guess. Overall, better 90s rock bands if that's what you're craving. 3 stars - it's ok.
A noisy album with a reasonable amount of ska undertone. It's catchy enough in some respects. Vocals sometimes seem to be an afterthought.
An entire album resting on one song, 3 minutes and 7 seconds in length. At least give it the respect it deserves and capitalize it on the album cover. This isn't a 5 star album, but it's hard to rate it less than 4 given the influence John Lennon has had in the world, especially with this one song. Is this a case of where the hype is actually greater than the output? Perhaps... perhaps......
Really harsh trumpets that seem to overpower what is trying to be accomplished on this album. It's jarring every single time. Without them I'd probably rate this one star higher. Love the mood and feel of Ray Charles on this album and we really don't need blaring trumpets to compete with him.
Didn't like this album at all. Can't really find much redeeming about it. It's different, but it's not especially easy to listen to. Perhaps that's the appeal? These guys are raw and not sellouts? Finally turned it off at song #12... Couldn't make it through the whole album and didn't even want to. 1 star.
Is any song different than any other song? Honestly could have had one consecutive track 1 hour and 12 minutes long and it would have accomplished the same thing. I don't really listen to lyrics, so whatever insightful philosophy Bob is singing to us all is lost on me. The album isn't bad... just really repetitive.
Chill album, with some nice instrumental bits. Didn't stand out too much, but was pleasant to listen to while working.
Nice and calm. Like a Spanish-speaking Norah Jones in an odd kind of way. I dig it.
This album holds my least favorite U2 song of all time. U2 is ok, and this album is ok. This whole album is adult contemporary Top40 music that they can play in a dentists office... I find it quite amusing that the song play count falls like a rock after song 6. It's like the back half of the album doesn't even exist.
Really enjoying this album. Now on the 3rd listen through. Kate's voice and the production of it has echoes of Madonna from time to time. I enjoy the various components of each song, with numerous effects. In a way it's dreamy, very calming and has a way of keeping my attention. It's a catchy album, and in the back of my head I'm a bit sad because I'll never remember to come back to it and listen again.
Twice had to look over and see if I had gone past the album and Spotify started auto-playing an R.E.M. album.
An interesting album, which definitely sounds like 90's alternative with a slight bit of grunge mixed in. Guitar pedals to the rescue! Pretty good album overall.
Very eclectic. This is the kind of album that I'd have never found on my own, but I enjoyed. Almost like a movie soundtrack.
The good thing about this album is that it's only 35 minutes and 3 seconds. Sounded like a standard punk album. A couple songs on here that aren't too bad; I liked TV Party, even the highest played song Rise Above didn't hit with me. Overall, wasn't my thing. 2 stars.
I never got into Radiohead like so many others in college. Listening back, I still don't get it and can only wonder if the music were supplemented with some kind of mood altering substance if it would resonate with me more.
Some hits we've all heard, and the rest of the album is ok.
