Modern Kosmology
Jane WeaverI don’t get the inclusion on the list here. Very derivative and not really unique in any way. Compared to others on this list I’d say this has gotta be in the bottom .1%. Confused.

True showcase of Stevie’s incredible voice. The whole album is smooth like butter. Some VERY funky grooves thrown in here, too.
It’s fine! Ella is great. I’ve just heard these songs 1000x times. Gershwin is fine but Ella sounds better on other artists.
Fucking great. Ethereal.
Cemented what I believed before which is that the Stones get one good melody or line in a song and just really coast on it for anywhere from 3 to 11 minutes. A couple great songs save this from being an absolute slog of a record.

Truly incredible. I’ll take any opportunity I can to sit down and listen to this art from front to back. To think that this came out in ‘72 is wild. Bowie was always 10 years ahead. Hard to find much to complain about here, other than various recording quirks that come from a record in the 70s. My favorite on this list so far by a landslide. What an experience.
It’s good. Definitely hear the CS+N in this album a couple times. Overstays it’s welcome, though some of the instrumental jams make up for that.
Not much to say here lol. It’s good instrumental stuff but casual sitar isn’t really my jive
Honestlyi liked this more than I thought I would. A lot of emotion on this album. Good instrumental too
Other than freedom, it doesn’t really hit any particularly spectacular notes for me. It’s good, but I’d say that’s about it. Some great lyrics in there from a strong man but just pretty average overall album.
What can I say that hasn’t been said? I will say, there’s a couple songs on here that really made me think about knocking it to a 4/5 (I’m looking at you, Maxwell) however the rest of the album more than makes up for a couple silly ones. Iconic song after iconic song. The last 3 songs are such an experience. The build into Carry That Weight makes me want to SCREAM every single time. A gorgeous album.
Really good chill hop. Definitely will keep this in my rotation for background music
It’s like someone took all of Michael’s B-Sides and crammed them onto an album with too many interludes. Feels like the song Rhythm Nation was just played in the background on repeat while they wrote the rest of the album.
Man these cats are cookin’! Good instrumental, weaker on the vocal side. Southern rock with a side of jazz.
God, man. I think that a lot of my issue with this has the potential to be the Seinfeld Syndrome. A lot of jokes on that show seem cliche and dumb to a first viewer now because they established so many of those cliches. Maybe because Bob Dylan pioneered so much, maybe it sounds shitty and derivative on a first listen in 2022. Maybe I’ve always hated Dylan’s voice and no matter what I do I can’t get past it. There are other vocalists worse than him that I can listen to…there’s something about him that just really gets me. Look some of these songs are certainly written very well, but some of the rhyme schemes on this album feel like My First Singer-Songwriter Record. The intro track has one of the worst sprees of simple one syllable rhymes I’ve ever heard. Maybe we’ll get another later Dylan record on this and he can redeem himself in my eyes, but until then I’m happy to shelve this one.
Honestly, this album could just be “Carey” and I would rate it 5/5. But every single song on this album adds on to the last. A true pinnacle of emotion in recording. Her voice on this album is like raw sadness and love. Easily one of the best albums of all time.
This is super fun! Great background music for me since I’m missing out on the lyrics.
Not great.
Close to perfect. Clean production, iconic songwriting, sticky melodies, and a strong message. Never overstays its welcome, even on two different 9+ minute songs impressively enough. Realistically one of my top 10 albums of all time.
Iconic! This album has a lot of classics on it. Definitely cemented Van Galen’s sound. A couple meh tracks on here keep it from being incredible, but Eruption is almost enough to warrant a 5/5 on its own.
The production on this album is actually incredible. However, vocally it’s a rollercoaster that goes up really high and then just stays there. The Boys know how to have a good time but eventually I want something else other than getting yelled at about girls and pranks and crime.
Really enjoyable listen. Opens with Judy Blue Eyes which absolutely RIPS. Some of the songs border on early prog rock, with some really incredible instrumentation from all parties here. A couple boring songs keep this from being perfect but overall a VERY solid album. And a great showing for first album as a group.
Pretty cheery standard Christmas music. Gotta dodge the Ronettes the whole album because I hate that woman’s voice more than life itself. Pretty same-y, which is a product of the Christmas music but still makes this pretty boring in the grand scheme of things.
Man, fuck. I hate early Dylan’s voice so much it’s not even funny. On this album especially it truly feels like someone is impersonating him. I’m giving this a 2 because I think if someone else sang this stuff it would be good but I genuinely can’t get through this man’s voice. I Fucking hate it.
First half is late stage disco perfection, second half loses a little momentum but closes strong with ‘Burn This Disco Out’. When he’s on, MJ is the best pop star to ever do it.
Solid proto-90’s alt. Suffers from the usual problems with experimental albums of this era, e.g. ideas not fleshed out enough, faults in production, etc. still some solid ideas on here and definitely an unexpected listen.
Kinda feels like a lot of decent ideas just thrown together. Some good stuff here and there but really bogged down by some very fleshed out bad ideas. Susan’s house.
I see the merit here but it’s really not for me. I prefer more punk in my angry female alternative. She does interesting stuff for sure but just not my style.
I really enjoy this record!! Incredibly influential album. I wish a few of the songs strayed more away from the power chord mess that the rest of the album represents. (and one that doesn’t suck like Polly)
I was really surprised by this album. First listen to the first couple of songs had me NOT loving it. The next day I came back and ended up listening to My Girls a couple times in a row. Since then, I've realized this album really rips! I think a couple songs tend to overstay their welcome, but save from that I was a huge fan.
It's alright. I like the sound their going for but for some reason the songs just dont particularly interest me.
I see the talent in the band here, but this album is kind of boring to me. Sometimes it kind of feels like they're playing just to play. Obviously, some of the songs are very well written, but some of the ideas just get pretty tired.
Yikes! Human is a good song, other than that I have absolutely no interest in this. I genuinely can't tell sometimes if it's her voice or a theremin but either way it doesn't sound right.
Look they’re super talented. I just don’t particularly enjoy this sound. In my opinion there’s too much repetition with not enough change to keep me interested. I know this is a crazy influential album and I know there’s other albums in this space that I really enjoy so it’s hard for me to rate it this low but it just doesn’t hit for me.
I was really tempted to give this a 3/5, but I think I'm overly critical because I love Doolittle, their previous record, so damn much. But honestly this is a great alternative album. Lots of later bands who used Pixies as an influence can be heard here.
Classic punk. Heavily political and full of protest without ever not feeling fun. Makes me wanna drive through a brick wall.
This album puts down the roots of the hip hop infused alternative pop that would end up fueling more than two decades of collaboration filled, masterful albums. Certainly one of the more experimental sounding of Gorillaz’ discography, there are more loose ends here than I would like. A couple ideas definitely don’t end up going anywhere. Still a fantastic debut showing from the worlds most successful virtual band.
Woof. I wanna say I think there is merit here because I think Korn was genuinely influential to the sound of rock after this album. Was it a good influence? That stands to be seen. The first song on this album is bad. Freak on a leash, while I hesitate to call it good, is at least a song I know? There’s an Ice Cube verse on this album! It’s pretty bad. That’s kind of how I feel about everything involving this album. Like, “oh cool this is a thing! Oh shit. It’s bad. “ is pretty much the monologue though this whole album. I’m giving it a 2 because I think it was a majorly influential album…but man this is really bad.
Pretty boring generic late 90s R&B
I don't have much to say about this. Hardcore background music.
This went crazy when I was 12. As an adult, Em’s early shock and awe horror style just doesn’t hit the same way as it did in the early 2000s. It’s not shocking and it’s not interesting, it’s just kinda weird. Rhymes filled with murder and sexual assault, farts and piss. Some greats songs and rhymes are held back by how awful the subject matter is. Feels like it’s specifically aimed at 12 year old boys. Only so many times I can hear someone say they’re gonna sleep with a teenager and kill their wife
Surprised! Definitely some derivative stuff but also some really fun Brit pop rock.
Legendary! Jimi has some of my favorite riffs of all time and at least two of them are on this album. His blues infused melodies are just as interesting as his guitar work.
Whoa! This one surprised me. Not familiar with these guys past Pet Sounds, which is a fantastic album. This one I had not particularly heard of so I was really pleasantly surprised that this was so damn good. The happiest punk rock record ever.
ALMOST nothing interesting about this whatsoever. At least they are playing well?
2000s hip hop at some of its best. There’s a reason Missy was and is considered the Queen.
I’m very middle of the road on this. As a 98 baby I really don’t care about an old dude talking about how 9/11 made him feel but I get that the songwriting here is good.
Good world music. Great instrumentals.
Great blues and songwriting, just not personally my thing.
An incredible showcase of skill. This album is my favorite jam band style album I’ve ever heard. Whipping Post is absolutely insane.
Standard DNB. Pretty boring.
Wrestled between 4 and 5 for this. The talent here is insane. My only gripe is I just don’t love Deep Purple’s songwriting. I love listening to them play and this has the most insane drum solo I’ve ever heard, I just wish I liked the actual song parts more.
Some fun instrumental moments but I really don’t care for here vocals or lyrics at any point.
Definitely good and can clearly see the influence. The beats and flow really steal the show here, as the rhymes really have not aged well, especially compared to the contemporaries at the time.
A couple good tracks and great tight production but ultimately a bloated album that tends up linger on ideas far too long.
Put me to sleep
Like the Beatles without the depth
I’d like it if they weren’t so damn whiny
Tried 3 different times to listen to this. Nothing bad about it just didn’t grip me in ANY way.
Solid pop rock with some really bad ballads
Can’t get past the vocals honestly. Fun instrumentals and the lyrics are fine but he needs to clear his throat
Just not really my thing
Diet smiths
One of the best modern country albums period.
Rough rough late new wave
Schools out is the best song on here and I wouldn’t say schools out is my favorite song
