Classic badass but fun quintessential queen. First track has some wild thrash metal guitar passages. Sometimes the kitchy 50s Americana vibes reminded me of Zappa. There’s a little bit of filler on here but altogether Queen doing what they do best.
I don’t want to be curmudgeonly and genuinely go into every album assuming I’ll enjoy it but in the pantheon of pop music I’m really at odds as to how this album made it to the list.
For the most part it’s bland oversimplified musicality and woeful woeful lyrics leave me feeling deflated.
The singles on this album are bops and there’s one decent Ballard towards the end but all in all I came away from the experiance thinking less of Taylor Swift. Lorde or Miley Cyrus made better pop albums in this era just to name two alternative examples.
If I could have a decimal rating it would gain an extra 0.5 for ‘style’ and ‘shake it off’ but otherwise it deserves the 1 rating.
Firmly in classic album territory. Such a fun easy funky listen.
A near perfect album. Nilsons many vocal stylings match the ever changing feel of each song on the album. From emotional ballads to funky experimental numbers, minimalist blues to hard rock and all done without feeling disjointed.
Bit of a hard listen this. Starkly brutally 80’s. The production really grinds against Cohens voice. I enjoyed parts and especially ‘Everybody Knows’ but I can’t say I was sad when the album finished and thankfully it was rather short.
Freaky, sexy, swinging, psych 60’s rock’n’roll at its purist. Dirty fuzzy production makes it feel cohesive amongst the clangs and crashes and yells and screams.
Really phenomenal in every conceivable way really. Big contender for best ever debut album.
One of those albums it’s hard to say a bad word about. Somehow fun and mystic. Pop, folk, glam, rock. She’s one of a kind.
I think I like this best of the two ‘74 Queen albums. A little more bombastic and theatrical. Some just unreal performances on here but no real hits. Feels a bit more like a concept album.
Wouldn’t have expected to see Travis on this list. This album is nice, a little too clean and cutesy for my taste but it is elevated for a pop/soft rock album. Like a watered down bubblegummy Radiohead.
The instrumentation is quite intricate and gorgeous at times but the lyrics can be a little cringe and the vocals a little dull.
Cool nuanced use of country instruments (banjo, slide, harmonica). It’s alright, wish I could give it 2.5 but I’ll bump it 3.
Lovely little soft rock/pop album. I got this on the day Mr Gibb died so a little more sentimentality there from a fellow Aussie.

Not exactly what I expected! I thought these guys were more collage/indie rock but it feels like proto-deftones. Interesting!
I love this album. Yeah it’s full of showy virtuosity but also deep grooves and snappy hooks. That Simon and Garfunkel cover is insane.
