Mothership Connection
ParliamentOh yeah, if this album doesn’t make you move then you better check your pulse! That funk tho! And you can hear how influential this sound is. From 1975 and yet as identified, light years ahead of its time.

Definitive work in the golden age of hip hop. Autobiographical, graphic, and lyrical. Personal preference is to skip all the woman degradation and sexual sound effects. Prophetic lyrics in many ways from foreseeing his own early death to the World Trade Center bombing. What else can be mined from these lyrics that could serve as a warning? Plus, I believe that one song helped that one kid be good at baseball in that one movie. And if you don’t know, now you know!
I would prefer to listen to this in an underground rave in the 90s. Beats like that had never been heard. I wouldn’t choose this to sit and listen in the living room, but it is the perfect soundtrack to get into hyperdrive mode for a good cardio workout!
This would have been a site to see - Sam Cooke being true to himself and letting the music flow from that full band out into the crowd. I hate that his life ended too early and that this wasn’t even released for 2 more decades, but it is a gift for us now and future generations. Thank you, King of Soul, for your contributions to the world of music.
This album proves that George never deserved to be seen only in the shadows of John and Paul. George was not just the extra guitar guy! George could write and play and sing! And that dude has soul, too. These songs are spiritual in nature and have a universal time ascending quality about them. And it’s a whopper of an album! Let’s hear it for George, everybody!
This short list of songs packs some heat! You can hear the pain of longing for love in his voice. The last song takes you to church as you recognize the heartache of the story in the song.
This is definitely a classic worth belonging in everyone’s collection. There are some timeless songs on here that have been sampled, covered, and redone countless times. The Police were great, what can I say?
Dave Grohl becomes more than just the drummer for Nirvana with this solo album that plants the seed to grow into one of the most successful rock bands of our time. This still might be my favorite Foo album despite the success of the sophomore album. 90s grunge forever!
This is a great album and Simon & Garfunkel are an amazing duo. They can produce the most beautiful harmonies that stir you to tears and can get you grooving. My favorite album is still The Sounds of Silence, but this one is good too!
I enjoyed this one. Not groundbreaking, but worth the listen.
I dig it. Only knew that one song, but it’s not my favorite on the album. I like the more raw girl punk sound. Rock on!
ZZ Top is like that really cool great uncle who you kinda wish you were like, but also pity in a way because they are so cool, but also likes their TV dinners too much so they’re always looking for love, but can’t quite figure out how to actually find love because they’re way too into how they dress and getting the perfect guitar tone. So in one way they’re really successful, but not in every way. Classic killer guitars though!
Son of a Preacher man can be identified from the first second! I was unfamiliar with the rest of the album or Dusty, but I appreciated this opportunity to be more familiarized.
The word that comes to mind for this album: RANGE! Musically and vocally and just the vibe. There is everything from tender, soft guitar and sweet soothing vocals to pure raw rock and belting out through the roof. The story of Jeff Buckley is a sad one, which adds to the emotion of listening to this album. RIP
Perhaps infamous Iggy Pop with his band of raw rockers have their most well-known songs from this album. Of course they don’t have many albums to choose from and they made more of a name for themselves from Iggy’s wild live antics. But I can get down with this.
This is an artist I’d heard more of than actually listened to, and this album made me listen to other albums and learn more of Neil’s backstory. Mad props to this dude. I even like some of his songs. I personally just don’t like listening to his voice. Might appreciate a Neil Young cover more than the original.
This album takes me back. I had this on double disc CD and wore it out! Definitely like some tracks better than others, but this one had some of my favorite SP songs on it.
I was not feeling this. Maybe I caught it on the wrong day for me and I need to come back to it, but I tried to listen all the way through and I just couldn’t get there. Different headspace perhaps or just not a style that I was into on that particular day. Sorry Casanova, this story for me was more of a divine tragedy!
I dig it. De La Soul has continued to have an impressive musical career and obviously had much influence on the hip hop revolution of the 80s and 90s.
I was familiar with the Christmas song on this album, but had never heard much else from The Pogues. Now I’m more of a fan! I can say that I will be throwing this album on every St Patty’s Day from now on for sure!
This one was new to me. I enjoyed familiarizing myself with Neneh’s work and found it pretty cool that her father was a jazz musician and that her brother is Eagle-Eye. I cover “Save Tonight” often, but doubt I’ll be covering any Neneh anytime soon. Mad props to her though!
Tom Petty is classic and deserves to be on the list. However, these aren’t my favorite songs of his. I guess that’s why they’re called the Heartbreakers. Don’t always live up to the expectations.
Loved this one. I was already familiar with Arcade Fire, but had not sit down to listen intently. I loved this album musically and thematically. It has a way of feeling new and nostalgic at the same time and provides some perspective and introspection. Will be listening to this more in the future.
Yes! This is an album that deserves to be on the list for sure. 1996 and this still hits so hard. The blending of genres with these sick beats and rhymes and the voice of Lauryn Hill! 5 stars!
My fav Police album. Nuff said.
The Temptations were the classic Motown sound! This album showcased their incredible talent and has all the vibes!
This one was meh for me. I just wasn’t really feeling it, dawg. I kept getting wrapped up in her black hair and some depression listening to this one. I’m sure it has its place in the world, like a sad movie or something. But not something I’d choose to listen to much.
The Stooges definitely embody punk and influenced many great rock bands.
Yeah! This is my jam. I wore this CD out in high school. I still consider it “new” RHCP, but that’s just showing my age. Not a bad song on this album and one I come back to time and time again.
Bowie is no doubt on this list for multiple albums. This one is probably here, in my opinion, because it gives witness to such an amazing and creative artist who was able to keep reinventing his persona and work for such a long and successful career as rock’s more glamorous and artistic personalities.
I honestly hadn’t followed Peter Gabriel as much as Phil Collins post-Genesis, or should we call that Revelation? However, I have mad respect for ol Pete and the work he does. Not something I would choose to listen to often, but I’ll give it 3.5 stars.
This is great for the person who loves that classic 80’s sound. As a 90’s kid I always pushed away from it, but have grown in my appreciation of it. I might check out this bands other stuff since they’re apparently very versatile.
I’ve listened to this album countless times and will keep coming back to it. It is definitely one of my favorite Beatles albums. George’s songwriting really shines on this one with Something and Here Comes the Sun. I love how the last half of the album runs together with songs changing and melding into one another. And the finish (minus Her Majesty) is epic and iconic.
The Genius! I love that it has been said Ray Charles was more influential than Elvis. I agree.
The OG American voice! This album made me wanna sit by a fireplace with a cigar and some bourbon. It’s a whole mood. True classics never go out of style.
Ok, yeah! This is what I came here for. I had never heard of this guy, but now I am a fan! My favorite track from the first listen has got to be I’ve Been Dazed. Had to listen to that one again. I will be returning to this artist and checking out his other albums!
I had to keep this in context. This was 1970, back before everything popular was digital music. This was pioneering and inspired new worlds of production that’s everywhere now.
This is THE G&R album. These famous rockers made a career out of these songs and still are the ones people want to hear. Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child of Mine. I personally don’t care for Axels voice but love Slash’s riffs and solos!
I love Bob Dylan covers! He’s one of the greatest songwriters of all time. I just don’t want to listen to him. But his musical career is impressive and I have mad respect for the guy!
I love this album! Well, actually I really only love that one song, “Where is My Mind?” The rest you kinda just have to put up with. However, this group inspired one of the greatest bands of all time: Nirvana. And many will disagree with me, but it’s no use. Kurt was the best rockstar and his drummer went on to make the Foo Fighters. I haven’t seen any nirvana in this list yet, but I’m still early in the process. I bet Nevermind is on the list. In Utero is their best album, though. Anyway, this is supposed to be about The Pixies.
This was pretty good. I enjoyed the listen. I was unfamiliar with this group before. Not the best thing to come out of 1984, but worth the listen for sure!
Blur is underrated in the US. They flew under the radar, or rather the shadow of Oasis. Damon has stood the test of time with his project The Gorillaz. I liked this album. It’s quirky. Blur has a fun personality about them.
Never heard of this group. Had I been alive back then, I woulda been into it.
I had only heard a couple of these songs, but they’re classic! I enjoyed this listen. They blend psychedelic rock with singer songwriter folk and blues.
I really enjoyed this listen. Had never heard of this group. Too bad they had such a short career as a band!
I dug it.
Amy Winehouse brings back an old classic soul sound with a new biting edge to it. Sadly in the 27 club. Such a weird phenomenon about that. I respect her music, but personally don’t prefer to listen to her.
This is THE Zeppelin album. If you don’t know at least half of these, you’ve been living under a rock. But not the rock of Led Zeppelin!
I enjoyed this. Especially his shitting on America for thinking the world revolves around us. Amen, Morrissey!
I disagree with choosing this album. I could’ve gone my whole life without hearing this one.
This is my jam! I’m immediately transported to the Caribbean when I listen to Marley. But this is more than relaxing beach music. This is about spiritual and political revival. Dancing for revolution!
M&M is some dark entertainment not to be taken too seriously. He proves it with this shock and awe album, but also has a way of saying his twisted mind doesn’t mean he’s doing the things he sings about. He just likes pissing everyone off. And he’s made a good career out of not giving a fuck.
I absolutely love Bob Marley, so it’s great to be introduced to other members of The Wailers. I’m gonna be expanding my repertoire of reggae now. The beach playlist is getting better! And yeah, I think we should legalize it, too. And free every person in prison who has been preyed upon.
Groovy baby yeah… listened to Jimmy Smith all day. Good background music to vibe to while driving around or whatever.
What an odd group. I like a lot of what I’m hearing, but then there’s the extra strange stuff like the space sound effects, animal noises, talk singing, and so on. I have to be a little tipsy to enjoy this.
Gotta give props to the Grandmaster for creating the genre of hip hop as we know it today through his sound manipulation of cutting and scratching vinyl. I also appreciate that the topics are of higher social consciousness and actually hold important messaging unlike most modern popular hip hop.
I love Black Sabbath and this is my favorite album of theirs. They spawned a whole genre of music inspired by their version of dark riff driven rock.
I’ve not gotten into Bowie much before, but I enjoyed this album. It’s a good vibe.
This one was just aight to me. Not bad, but not really memorable. I might need to come back to it, though.
Hadn’t listened to much Screaming Trees, but had heard of them. I liked this album enough to want to check out their other albums
Some famous jazz! It’s amazing the abilities of these 4 musician!
Bobby Womack lived an impressive life. From playing guitar with superstars Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin to coming into his own soul and r&b singing and songwriting. His friendship with mentor Sam Cooke is mentionable and even controversial is the fact that he married Sam’s widow. I enjoyed this album.
Lying, cheating, and drinking. Songs to represent our Country. Never really liked country, but ol George Jones has some entertaining songs, I’ll give him that.
This kinda reminds me of a French Ramstein, but worse. Sorry, I didn’t love listening to this. Sounded like a horror film backing track.
I love The Beatles and have listened to this album countless times. It’s truly a work of art.
America’s OG vocalist everyone. These are some of his all time greatest hits still heard all over the world. Gotta love a classic.
Love this! Soft, whispering, pretty, melodic vocals backed by layers of fuzzy distortion and trance-like rhythms. A sweet spot of aggressive rock and alternative noise, which MBV influenced and perfected!
This is the Run-D.M.C. album to know. These guys brought hip hop to the masses through their collaborative style blending rock riffs with emceed hip hop beats and rhymes.
This album had its moments for me, but overall I’m not a fan. I support her and all she stands for, but just don’t care for her music that much. That being said, I am glad others do!
I bet there’s a lot of Bowie albums on this list. This one has a more familiar rock vibe that I dig. I’ve got a lot of respect for the man.
Janet did well to come out from the shadow of brother Mikey and the other four brothers of the Jackson 5. This album showed she had something to add to the pop music of the day. The dancing and music videos made this project stand out visually. Of course, how can anyone forget the wardrobe malfunction Super Bowl incident? That got everyone’s attention!
OutKast is one of the greatest of the great rap groups keeping the ATL scene on the map. This is probably my favorite album of theirs with hit like Bombs Over Baghdad, Ms. Jackson, and So Fresh, So Clean.
I only knew the disco falsetto Bee Gees, not the acoustic singer/songwriter Bee Gees. Pleasant surprise.
Just listening the The Who, you can see how fans of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Beach Boys would like them, but it was the live performances that set them apart with Townsends wild antics and the destruction of property. Personally, I would rather listen to The Beatles or The Stones, but I’d jump to see The Who live.
I didn’t know any of these songs. I kept waiting for “Anything For Love,” but that’s a later album. Also, this guy reminds me so much of Jack Black that I couldn’t take it seriously. Some of his songs are meant to be taken lightly, but not all. Entertaining listen.
This was an acquired taste. It had some delightful moments and some that were cringe for me. It’s one that needs a few listens to grow on you. Not sure I’ll have the patience for that, but interested in checking out later projects by the group.
I am grateful for the slow rise of REM and their influence on my favorite music genre of my adolescence. Alternative rock wouldn’t be the same without you guys!
Eno has collabed with all the greats. This album is just okay for me though. To quote Oukast, I’m just being honest. Mad respect for the dude, though.
The Eagles have everything needed for mass appeal, they can rock, they can soothe, they can harmonize, their songwriting is smooth, and guitar solos so tasty!
The Waynes World movie in the 90s introduced me to Alice Cooper. What a fascinating person! This album has the song most people know, which is also the title of the album. What I wasn’t expecting was hearing a show tune from West Side Story and the horns and blues influences. Eclectic and eccentric.
I did enjoy this album. I was surprised at how folky it was. Kinda had a Grateful Dead vibe in moments.
Black Sabbath off of Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath! This album has songs that are very Black Sabbathy! I dig it, personally.
I consider them classic glam rock revivalists and they’ve got it down to a science! We cover “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” but it’s just such a ridiculous song. Flamboyant and fun!
Tina Turner is a legend. I just don’t particularly like her music.
At first listen, I was thinking this was just a country western guy I’d suffer through, but then the second song had a vibe similar to an MTV unplugged. The third song got kinda psychedelic and that got me wanting to keep going. Not bad overall.
Radiohead is one of my all time favorite bands. They love pushing the envelope and don’t mind reinventing themselves as they so feel. This album is one of my favorites because it’s a return to guitar driven music with the infusion of riffs and jazz influences.
The Pharcyde have made their mark in the history of popular hip hop. It’s old school, but I mostly dig the album.
Steely Dan’s first album continues to be the crowd favorite! With the most recognizable tunes that fall easily on the ears and create a fun and laid back atmosphere. Jam bandy and impressive solos. Would be fun to see them live.
