The second side of this is near perfect. Unfortunately, besides the killer opening track, the first half leans too much into pastiche Reggae rock that becomes grating by the end of the last song on the A-side. Message in a Bottle is an amazing song nonetheless, but I find The Police to be much better when they lean into their new wave sound.
This one doesn't do it for me. I don't know why, I'm a fan of Pink Moon, but this just feels like a record that became a classic because of Drake's tragically short discography. It is well-made and competent, but besides his angelic voice, the instrumentals are pretty bland or half-baked. "Poor Boy" feels incredibly clunky and out of place, the title track reveals that this cutesy chamber-folk is not actually all that unique, just pulled together by an extraordinary performer. John Cale's contributions are pretty much the only instrumental moments that caused any excitement in me, A mediocre album
Masterful. Not as showstopping as the previous year’s “Pastel Blues” but an incredible album nonetheless
First album on this list I own physically :)
The second disc is even better than the first! The songs flow so nicely together and it paints this beautiful rustic picture of the 20th century. Rocks Off is one of their hardest no bullshit songs that starts the album off with such high energy and that momentum never lets up
Classic. Yes it can be a little repetitive but I think the second side has so much variation in the beats and song structures that I don’t even mind some of the redundancies and “fat” that would probably be cut had this been made sooner. Anyway, a revolutionary album.
Awesome album. I’m getting a lot of new wave from this generator and im not complaining im fortunately a huge fan of this sound. I’m a little shocked to find this album to have mixed reviews, I was jamming the whole time
First side is a solid collection of songs. But that second side is horribly grating and unoriginal. Very average album
Rocks so hard I can ignore that some of it is a lil bloated
Really good. But still very British and annoying
Incredible. Soothing yet invigorating at the same time. Love her vocals and the simple stripped back production. Great songwriting from beginning to end
Paved the way in some sense. For early ‘10s indietronica, but horribly dull and clearly has an identity crisis, unsure of wether or not to take itself seriously
The hits are the worst part of this. There is so much excellent material but the heavy hitters here are so embarrassingly generic. Solid. Worth digging deep into.
banging. Maybe slightly hollow and non-comprehensive. Especially compared to the more avant-grade and folky works of Buckley. Here is mostly just imitations of funk artists from a scene he is very out of place in (still great)
Incredible. His best album. I have no words for just how well produced and realized all these songs are. REAL jazz elements implemented in rock like never seen before. His voice is incredibly dynamic and exciting here. The songwriting has never been this forward-thinking since maybe Low. What a way to end your career.
Just so... bland and soulless. Rubin's production is very good, the actual instrumentals are okay. Flea's bass playing is rightfully acclaimed. But the flow is so terrible, the influences are so hollow, the vibes are just rancid all around. Bloated as hell as well.
Drumbo is fantastic, he’s just a goddamn machine. Everything about this records is meticulously done Perfectly curated this edgy and jarring surreal vibe. Exciting in a deeply special way. The rating here is atrocious, I don’t think the shock would be so big if these people just listened to some fucking jazz for once in their life and realize the music is here actually isn’t that crazy
Trippy, experimental, boundary pushing, and remains to be a super causal listening experience as well. Super fun and light and I want it on vinyl
Just effortlessly cool and smooth.
It can be a little longwinded, but this is a foundational work that has so many great moments in it. The mishmash of early hip-hop and electronic music in P-Funk aesthetics? Unbelievably cool that such a seminal work could also be so eclectic
Raw and so important in the Beatles canon. Plastic Ono band is the defining moment of the public realization that dispelled all the hopes and dreams of millions of fans. The Beatles were dead and it was never coming back. Coming out just shy of the end of 1970, the feelings were still fresh and it comes off in the raw earnestness of the album's content. Even if I find some of it lacking compared even to McCartney's immediate output post-split, I do have to commend the efforts and the introspection rarely seen from one of the biggest popstars in the world
Worst britpop I’ve ever heard. So disorganized and bland. I need to listen to pulp to cleanse my palate
Classic. Super nostalgic and homey sounding. A couple songs are a little flat I find, I think those more willing to submit to the vibe can ignore those mediocre points, but it’s still such an accomplishment of an album.
Love TVU and I love glam rock. But this has always eluded me. Idk why it just feels so unlike the genre in how dull most of the hooks are. The hits are alright, but “perfect day” is the only song I would say is great. The rest are passable to painfully drawn out in Lou’s signature monotone crooning
Precursor to what would be perfected in Ye's college dropout debut
love these albums where the hits are the low points and the deep cuts are plentiful and impactful
Tonally a little funky, and not in the good way. The long songs are always the highlight, almost wish this was an instrumental band at some points. When it gets in a groove it gets REAL good
Somber, has a reflective quality. Can be a bit of a drag but a wonderful drag at that.
Incredible voice but one of the most soulless and uninspired series of recordings ever made. Just terribly empty in production, writing, and arranging
Production consistently amazing. Songwriting dips in quality a LOT. Still pleasant and fun tho
Funk Rock has such high potential but it’s almost always diluted with the most generic and passive songwriting ever
Great album but I don't think it reaches the same heights as those early records. Prefer Young to have a little more country folk and a little less roots rock. Speaks to Young as an artist though how well received he would continue to be
Classic. Super under valued in the grand scheme of metal. Some songs work better than others
Incredible, Bjork should do house again at this level I forgot how much fun this was
Bangers all down the whole tracklist. Constantly grooving and managed to experiment at the same time
Awesome drums on this. Great psychobilly sound that is unique if not a little one note.
Incredibly overrated. Flashy, but clearly lacking in the songwriting and sensibilities to back it up. Covers are great, originals are pretty hit or miss. But when it does miss, it is a drag. Maybe could've been good as a 30 min album. But for a whole hour? Jeff is losing me
Incredibly breezy and exciting live album that serves as a small snapshot into King's genuis on the guitar and as a performer
Most songs don't go anywhere and overstay their welcome in all the time consuming trite 2000's cliche ways. Feels like squandered potential in these early stages. His next two albums are much better.
Pretty good. It is incredible how legendary Beyonce was even at the age of 20 here, taking part in the production, writing, and arranging of every original song here. This album is a little bloated and feels a little artificially and commercially pumped up to a full hour when it could've been a tight 40 or 45. The harmonies are godly though and the production is super forward thinking in a (now) super retro sounding way
Forgettable and generic soul that has not aged as well as his contemporaries.
Iconic at times. Great production all around, despite being a queen, Latifah gets out shadowed by her features a LOT
The bass lines are bumping, the vocals are on point. The lyrics are ridiculous and amazing. Nice runtime. Overall amazing album
WHEWWWW. Funky, fucking funnnnnkyy
This is like a mid can album, remnants of something truly fantastic
This is pretty boring. Maybe downtempo isn’t my thing, but almost everything here sounds plasticy and unexciting
I mean it’s fine. Has some bangers but most of it just sorta washes over me.
So incredibly dated but in some really endearing ways
Deserves just as much respect as the incredible "love deluxe" here we have the soothing, seductive and sleek jazzy backing that is as cutting edge as it is influenced
Transcendent at times. Super chill vibes, great for quiet night to just drift off to. Listen to the subtleties to his guitar playing. Exciting stuff I will need to check out the rest of Ali's discog
Greatest turning point in any high profile career ever? The balancing act here between what the audience wants and what Bob wants is ever present here. This honestly be my preference over Highway 61
A little bloated. Starts off with an absolute masterwork “Tyler” and only slows down after that. Still quite enjoyable
Suffers the same fait as many foundational albums. There’s some all time great music here but as a whole it’s a little underwhelming
fast and to the fucking point. Love it.
Dance music is so close to being my thing EVERY time. But it always peters off into a repetitive bore. That Neil Young cover is crazy though.
Absolutely gut wrenching and heartbreaking and tender and beautiful and INSANELY underrated, how did I not hear this until now?
The best part of every CCR song is the tambourine and it's hardly on this insanely bloated (for being so short) album. Title track goes so hard though
I mean. Whatever. Really more interesting as a cultural touchstone, probably her last album before everything around her became so tense and weirdly organized, both from defenders and attackers. Like looking back on a simpler time. It's still quite simply her most "pop" album. No pop rock or pop country to make it go down a little easier. For the most part it's pretty forgettable but no bad per se
Huge fan of obnoxiously British concept albums that are stacked with drumfills and quick changes. A breeze to get through so I will need to listen again
Iconic but a little tiring at times. Her folksy side has always not really interested me
all killer no filler. Perfect pop and new wave blend.
hooks here are out of this world. If I was making R&B when this was made I would be SCARED. 50 could do both hardcore gangster rap and smooth entrancing little melodies. The last album of its kind in many ways. TCD came along and changed everything
It's 36 chambers. What else can I say
Fleetwood's White album. proves they (at least the 70s lineup) can do more than just soft rock and pop
It's like so incredibly cheesy but stupidly fun but also there's NOTHING that isn't evident from a 30 second snipet
I think i like the second disc a little better. Wonderful but not as impactful as some of the more overtly s/s albums from this era of Nick Cave. Amazingly, equal parts post-punk and gospel and it WORKS
I can never fully get into these alternative dance 90s electronic beats that are so expertly crafted and at times undeniably effective. I respect the hell out of it though, even if I really can only enjoy this kinda music in small doses
A lot more new wavey then i expected. Those speedy bass riffs and complex drum patterns betray the laid back and purported smoothness of their beer thumping, lounging, and callous brand of hard rock presents. Still way too much filler but I do like the sound overall.
60's slop, Alan's psychedelic leftovers
Heartland rock is really cool idk why its been so long for me to listen to this. But really homey and warm album.
Getting whiplash from this album. At times brilliantly forward thinking, at others the most boring sludge that would pollute indie music for decades to come with so many dime a dozen bands that clearly ripped this sound off. final track is a banger. First 3 or 4 are pretty unique and good. Rest is a snooze
Essential mod. Just such a seductive sound. I should listen to more Jeff Beck
Love the MC, and the solos were brilliant.
I love how this sunshine pop / psych follows a soul structure in both compositions and in how almost every song is a cover
Uhhhhh. Maybe the last Metallica album I care about. Afterwards I only get roused slightly by the insane Lou Reed collab, but this was the last light before Metallica stopped mattering to me. Could’ve been amazing, and I admire them a lot for doing it, but unfortunately this is over 2 hours and more than half of it is re/load sooo solid 2.5/5
I mean yeah they rock. Kinda middling near the beginning, but free bird alone does so much heavy lifting. One of if not *the* best rock ending tracks ever
dated. But like in amaizng ways that makes you miss the era
She kinda has one song (except for the beat goes on that's unique and awesome)
Dissapointingly bloated. I guess i miss the rest of the Pixies....
Love parts, think others are way overhyped
Second half, when the songs launch off the safe and familiar, and starts incorporating more of that Husker streak of experimentation... it REALLY shines. 3.5/5
They are just fucking jamming on this shit. I was not a fan of green river but this, with it's long song lengths, and heavy percussive element and large sections of noodling... just amazing
Ridiculous for its time. I wish they went on to make like 10 more amazing albums but from what I can tell they really petered off after this insanely influential trilogy
A classic. Love the mix of ambience and art rock. Not fully enticing to me than some of the more rocky stuff but still very solid
Every song here slams. Possibly getting an even better score in the future. I had no idea sonic youth was so raw in the early days
The highs are incredibly high here. But theres some pretty big slow spots where it comes a lil bit of a bore. Stil love the overall glam and proto vibe
Used to think this was boring. But i was very wrong. I love the drums here specifically. Ending with a twin peaks sample made me sad now tho
A few good to great moments. But very unappealing to me aesthetically, feels very all over the place
Don't know why this is always treated like the black sheep in the big 3 that is this, thriller, and bad. To me it goes above and beyond anything Jackson ever did before or after.
Maybe a little too long for my liking. But it goes so hard when it wants to. A great album
Leaves very little of an impression. Don Henley only gets to sing like one song
Light 7. First side was incredible, the second side has the wonderful every breath but every other song is ehhh
Easy listening. But brilliantly scathing and intelligent writer.
Top 5 new wave album for me. No skips. Crisp production. All around great record
Changed hip-hop forever. Changed music forever. Changed culture forever. Not a single skip, even the skits are apropriately placed and not drawn out. Perfect record. First 10 on this list
Its pretty good. Some slick poppy tastyness here and there. Some tracks feel a little aimless though
