The Bends
RadioheadLovely voice, unexpectedly. I find the music unmoving, unmusical, as if it’s being made up as it goes.
Lovely voice, unexpectedly. I find the music unmoving, unmusical, as if it’s being made up as it goes.
Great voice. My favourite tonal range. Intentional musical structure which encourages anticipation of chorus, sing-a-longable. I do love a near-church choral arrangement. Son of a Preacher Man is a classic for the ages. Windmills of Your Mind a nice revisit.
Peppy instrumentals. Don’t enjoy the voice quality or ability. Too close to yelling over the instruments for me. Does nothing to recommend itself over every other garage band.
Wow, great voice and a love a choir orchestration. Just wow. Downloaded album ASAP. Turned out I already had a LOT of Solomon Burke. Who knew!
Horrible. Uneven sound so blasts on occasion. Simply dangerous for hearing (which might be a blessing.) guns and civil disobedience in the videos + gangsta shit. I’m not the target audience for this nonsense.
Again I’m not the target as this seems more acid rock than the Moody Blues-ish rock. The principal sings at a constant falsetto scream, interesting in one song not the whole album. Also the scream approach makes every song sound the same, with the exception of That’s The Way, which sounds Indian inspired. So in all, interesting for one song but too samey for the whole album (except song above.)
Sad that she kinda disappeared only to resurface when a Country cover of Fast Car was so very successful. She has a lovely voice. I get her and Joan Armstrading confused although Tracy is 10 years later, discographically
Just nope. Tedious music. I’m not the target audience.
What was that!? 60s rap? Random percussion and barely no recognizable instruments. Ah, bayou blues. Hmm. Not a welcoming voice. It sounds as if it’s being made up in the moment.
Arrangements very country. Not a great or evocative voice. Unmemorable songs. Next!
Suck skilful music writing. He deserves all the accolades. Great voice too. 5 star musician! I particularly like the interesting arrangement in the title tune, what a variety of sounds. It seems to be played less frequently than others ( on Apple Music playlists to be honest.) on this album, there are admittedly a few less interesting tracks (less catchy, forgive the shallow evaluation.)
Again instruments are so loud that the singer has to scream. Uninteresting, generic rock.
Juvenile sounding recording style. Ok voice poorly backed by few primitive instruments.
Well orchestrated, lovely toasty voice. Interesting to listen to. Great for traditional slow dancing. Nice musical flourishes.
Psychedelic pop is not for me but they are not untalented.
Sweet Dreams brings a smile to my face. Great arrangement too. I read about the origin of the song and creation of songs in general (per Annie Lenox). Starts with a sound/riff, in this case the very beginning of personal sound studios/home computer. Illustrating! Great dance tune too. And that face/eyes in the MTV video (Annie, not the cows though they’re sweet too.) Not fond of many other songs but this was their beginning so…
Nice instrument work, screaming voice which I find excessive and completely uninteresting. Next!
Great guitarist. I’m not fond of breathy singers. Seems like a lack of vocal ability. He talk/sings too. Seems like depression music. Still they’re not screaming or rapping so an automatic pass from me (in a good way). 3/5
Reggae! I’ve always loved reggae even though the beat remains the same. Looked up Burning Spear and Marcus Garvey. I’d heard the name of the latter, good to read the Hx of the PanAfrican movement. 4/5
She has good voice. Bland music though. She’s not overpowered by the instruments so that’s a plus. It’s listenable (and totally forgettable.) 2.5/5
A masterpiece of an album. Danceable, singalongable. Perfection. 5/5
Horrible screaming and banging. Vocals not much better. 1/5
Interesting. Good voice, bluesy, melodious. Horrid songs, almost talky, hate the lack of musicality. 3.5/5
Noisy instruments with no music, no singing. Who likes this! 1/5
Another 100% yelling album. Horrid. No warms. 1/5
Classic tune, Take It Easy. Song 5/5. Witchy Woman, 5/5. Peaceful Easy Feeling 5/5. I didn’t know they only formed in 1971 and this was their first. Had the Desperado album, of course. So sad that Glenn Frey is gone, he was hilarious in Miami Vice. Album 4/5 for bangers. The Laurel Canyon documentary was so good about the formation of all these seminal rockers. For me, my music awakening so makes this album 5/5.
What a warm hug of a voice. I will always appreciate Willie. A tad too County to appeal to my tastes but welcome nonetheless. I prefer his mainstream covers. 4/5
Great album 4/5. And I’ve always thought Heart of Glass was the beginning of white-person rap.
Peppy, dance music. She has a pleasant voice. Backing instruments are good, fully composed. There’s talking on the cuts which rakes me out of the enjoyment. 3.5/5
Well Sting is always welcome to my ears. I first saw him in Monty Python’s Secret Policeman’s Other Ball and I was stunned by his voice and ethereal beauty. Message in A Bottle is iconic. 4/5 (saving 5/5 for Barbra or Neil or Sarah or Glenn)
I hate live albums, the cheering seems propagandizing. Music is louder than the voices. The Boys Are Back in Town is 5/5 so overall 2.5/5
You Are The Sunshine, 5/5, brought a smile right away. He has a lovely voice. Talented musician. Superstition, wonderful guitar work. I Believe, nicely isolated voice. Overall 4/5
Did not like the clamour.
Great beat on Lonely Heart. A banger. 4/5. Good voices. Nicely balanced instrumentation vs voices. It Can Happen is nicely singable. Album 3.5/5
A classic 5/5. The boss. So danceable, great music. Vocal focus. Every one a banger. Well ok don’t love Downbound Train. But all the remainder is memorable. And that cover!
Nice voices, peppy beat. Surprising. Jackie Wilson Said is a classic Celtic Soul. 4/5. Come On Eileen is fun 4/5.
Heroes 4/5 but I never cared for his musical style, too much talking. But his style was his own and also ever changing. Still to my taste 3/5 only
1/5 hate talking albums hate rap hate hip hop
Nice voice, nice guitar work. Sounds almost Celtic. Not singable or danceable. Everybody Hurts gets the most airplay. A bit too plaintive for my tastes but if I was sad, this might be just the ticket. 3.5/5
Loved The Young Rascals. Harmonious. Only 2 surefire hits on this album (as the cover says) but a lovely start. 3.5/5
3 huge hits, what’s not to like. Sledgehammer, In Your Eyes and Red Rain. My only complaint is the inordinate length of many songs intros. 4/5
Rap, blechhh. 1/5
Wow, I’ve never heard of them. Nice instrumental backup, interesting choice. Good voice. Sonnet is lovely. A 60s sound at times. Definitely on the psychedelic side. 3.5/5
If I was feeling rude, I’d say, “What is this shit?” Radio, traffic noise, repetitive drum codas, puleeze… 1/5
Rap again! Horribly. Though I do appreciate the Hispanic backing. 1/5
Too instrument forward, sounds like every other yelling rock band. Nothing memorable. 2/5
Plays guitar well. I’m not fond of this country style. Musical voice, though. 2/5
Love Sam Cooke, dislike live albums. Classic tunes though so 4/5 Chain Gang, Cupid, Twistin’, Having A Party. Gold!
Non-music. Pretentious. And the misspelled label is the nonsense cherry on top. 0/5
Quite the “stable” Phil Spector had. Enjoyed all but Bobb B Soxx, sounded 10 years out of date compared to the other groups. I’m sure he stole horribly from all these artists but at Christmas, all is merry and bright. 4/5
Very uninteresting, skilled, loud guitar work with near screaming vocals. 2.5/5
I don’t love or revere The Stones. Great for dancing, of course. 3-4 good tunes here. I’m not sure what the remaster is accomplishing, as the voice is lost to the instruments. But You Can’t Always Get What You Want is true 5/5 gold; see The Big Chill. 3/5 overall.
Not up for jazz. All bleeds together. 2/5
Not up for rap. Just a cash grab by people who can’t sing or play an instrument. 1/5
Not my favourite rock. Kashmir is a good tune with voice balanced against instruments so that screaming isn’t required. 4/5. Other tunes not memorable. 3/5 overall
Some great tunes, in a variety of styles. So many tunes on the album, good value at the time. The sound is a little thin as in under orchestrated by current standards. I Saw The Light 4/5 It wouldn’t Gave Made Any Difference 4/5, Hello It’s Me 4/5, the rest 3/5 so 3.5/5 overall.
Bob! I do love reggae. Something about the beat mimicking a heartbeat. I think 3 Little Birds is the most famous track but for me, One Love/People Get Ready is pure gold. 3/5
By the 90s, popular music had become this. Grungy sound. Uninteresting. 2/5
Peppy but not good voices. A tad emo. 2/5
Badlands is a peppy iconically voiced banger 4/5. Prove It All Night is good if a bit samey. The slower tunes are ok. His voice is peak Springsteen. Overall 3.5/5
Of course, Hallelujah has become iconic, used lavishly in TV shows at tragic moments (the best IMHO The West Wing when Mark Harmon is shot to death) 5/5. So beautifully soulful. Better than the writer/artist Leonard Cohen’s version. Which is saying something because that’s awesome too. The other tunes are largely forgettable despite being one of the tragic Jeff Buckley’s few legacies. 3.5/5 overall.
The king! His voice sounds at his best. His country roots are strong at this point yet his voice elevates it to pop/rock. Truly a game changer. No notes. 5/5
3rd reggae album in this list, seems disproportionate since there’s been no Irish or Canadian albums! Only Stir It Up is memorable here, 2.5/5
Screaming is not music. (See also rap, hip hop, heavy metal, hard rock for the most part.) 1/5
They seem to be yelling the lyrics. 2/5
