A tour de force of 60s music that I generally dislike. Harmonizing vocals in a very 1960s style. Acid psychedelic stuff. Great guitar though on Come Back Baby (terrible voice...can someone else sing?). My Best Friend is pretty solid though, even though it's a bit cheesy.
Classic rock album - kind of heart-breaking, especially Have You Ever Loved a Woman. Layla is a classic too, although not my favorite song, even on the album. Clapton's got a pretty solid voice but the guitar (especially with Duane Alman) is fantastic. Really solid album although simply not my style of music. I've always kind of hated Layla for some reason.

Solid album...classic texas blues style. La Grange is such a classic. I would say it's a little bit boring as it's the same stuff over and over, but that ZZ Top sound is so iconic, that it's really fine.
Ray Charles is my kind of music. Bangers like Let the Good Times Roll and It Had to Be You. Some hidden gems too. Some reviewers commented that they didn't like the big band sound...I love that stuff. Not sure what they're talking about...Ray's voice is clear, strong, and not drowned out.
Solid album for 1963....shows all the promise of James Brown. Some catchy songs, but really I just don't think I'm a James Brown fan, especially the live stuff. I know that's sacrilege but I want something more polished from a production standpoint. The music was INCREDIBLY tight, so I can't fault James on anything musically. 4/5.
Surprised at how much I actually liked this. Not normally a grunge rock type of guy. Probably my least favorite song was Rooster, probably their most famous. Dam that River was really solid though. Them Bones too. Really depressing album though. Hits hard.

Solid solid album. I relistened to it a couple of times and it really slaps. Stay with Me, opening with Miss Judy's Farm, etc. It's a bit of a background band sound but that is fine. It's like there's a party going on in the background. Rod Stewart's voice is awesome too.

Often rated as a top 10 album, it doesn't deliver on that promise for me. It's great...some absolutely great songs (loved Computer Blue and the singles are, well singles), but something just didn't quite click for me. It seems so theatrical...probably the whole movie thing but whatever.
Undeniably important in establishing music for the next 15 years. The beats and rhythm are fantastic. Snoop Dogg, RBX, and Dre are fantastic. Definitely dated today with the homophobia and misogyny and everything Dre has done, but from a musical perspective, still solid. Not my style, and some of these songs are rough ("The Day the Niggaz Took Over") but good.
Honestly, probably the biggest surprise. I love "Sweet Dreams" but didn't realize the rest of this album is also pretty fucking solid. Sooo...80s. Weird at times (like the sax in The Walk) but it all seems to work so well. That hook in the song Sweet Dreams is absolutely incredible.
Like The Flaming Lips or The Postal Service, but way weirder. Some really solid tracks. Loved (and saved) Tonite It Shows and Hudson Line. Lyrics were a bit....Vampire Weekend? Cool album. Not mind-blowing though.

I say this a lot, but not my favorite type of music but this one got me into it. Motorhead knows how to fucking rock. It's not like the craziest, most diverse set of songs, but these guys can play well and it's straight fun.
I don't know if this is one of those things where I find it boring because it sounds like just standard music, but it really doesn't do anything for me. I don't really like Tom Petty's voice, I kinda hate this sound. It sounds like it smells bad or something. It just kinda feels like classic rock filler.
I like the review that says "like your drunk neighbors are having open mic night". I get the punk aspect with the gritty aspect but this album is kind of all over the place. It's like an Elvis impersonator is singing for a while, then it's Beck if he wasn't talented, songs stop and start randomly. Like the beginning of "Love All of Me" is cool...some sort of Beach Boys or Strokes riff to open and it's going great, and then they just completely ruin it. It's not as bad as that Genesis album, it's a tiny bit less annoying, but still, this is really just "noise". I feel like I'm someone's father saying "turn that racket off".
This is somehow both better and worse than I remembered it to be. 4 singles that are sing-alongs. Some real surprises....loved "Glamourous Indie Rock & Roll". Kinda Queen-ish? I think Flowers gets derided a bit for being kind of over the top at times, but who cares. Music is solid. Not life-changing, but totally solid.
There's a couple ways to go with the rating. If you understand jazz, I think you'd be nuts to go with anything other than a perfect 5. I don't think this could ever be a 1...everyone on here drips talent. So, it's odd, if you don't really understand jazz, I'm not sure you could give this a 5, and yet something like a 2, 3, or 4 seems kind of insulting. I'm not a huge jazz guy, so I'm going with a 3 + 0.75 for the exceptional talent, rounding to a 4. I hope one day I "get it". Tracks 1 and 3 are the shit though.
Well, this is clearly a David Bowie album but with the rock aspect of Iggy. A win for sure. Some classics like Lust for Life and The Passenger. Really enjoyed almost every song on this album and was all about the message here too. Fuck the detractors, live hard, rock on.

Great album. I accidentally listened to an album that was basically just versions of Rio over and over...it didn't get annoying and I think that speaks to how great that song is. Hit after hit on this song. Simon LeBon has such a great voice. Duran Duran is like if The Cure wasn't so depressed all of the time.
Beautiful voice, such a strong opening too. I didn't mind the "errors" in lyrics or knocking the microphone. It's a live show and it's jazz. I guess I just wasn't 100% into some of the songs, thus the mediocre review.
Gaye's got a great voice and some of these beats really are fucking amazing. Like I really liked Everybody Needs Love but.....these lyrics are so boring and so repetitive and just really weak. At times, the music also sounds like it's from Sesame Street (looking at you "Anger")
I really love the feeling of the music. So calm. Bob Marley's got a great voice too. Extra points for "Three Little Birds", probably the only song that has calmed me down in a moment of real anxiety. I don't agree with Marley on a lot, religion, social views, and how to create change. I think he's way off-base with the music and the meaning, so significant points deducted. Like..."Guiltiness"...placing a lot of blame whereas he and his family are the richest in Jamaica and their religion oppresses many. Play without lyrics my man.
On the 1,001 podcast, those guys loved this. To me, I was REALLY struggling by the fourth track (Charlotte). I'd say that this is just a very unsettling album and I really don't want to hear something like this again. It's REALLY not my style and I'm kind of surprised that it's anyone's style

I love this album. It's nostalgic for me, it's got a great innovative sound, it's easy to listen to but also really entertaining and takes a lot of turns. I dare say, this is a 5.
Actually pretty surprised by this. I thought "Brian Eno" and thought weird elevator music or something. Instead I got early Talking Heads type stuff. I wasn't super into the first track and that kind of put me off, but I got used to Brian Ferry's voice, a bit of a poor man's Midge Ure. Still not 100% my stuff but I appreciated it.
I think this other commenter summed it up well; "I have the zeal of a convert." She's got such a beautiful voice. Most of these songs are so much fucking fun. This album represents as much as I will ever love Ska. Solid album, "A Message to You Rudy" and "Concrete Jungle" are highlights. Sorry, not really in a mood for this at the moment, so the score probably reflects that.
Not my style but I can't deny that the song "Who You Funkin' With" is a goddamn banger. 80s style rap, Kraftwerk beats, and a bass that slaps the earth. The rest of the album is kind of messy.

I'm not the biggest folk fan nor really a big fan of Ryan Adams but that asshole can write a catchy riff, play a guitar, and has a great voice. I'm not ranking stuff based on if I like someone, but based on the music, as unbiased as I can be. "Listen to Oh My Sweet Carolina" and tell me you're not swept away in some sort of classic American love story. Like COMPLETELY LISTENABLE. Decent country/singer-songwriter stuff.
Well made, some real bangers, some real duds though too. I generally like Mike Stipe's voice and the instrument work is super solid. I'd say a 3.5 just because of those duds. Really was not into a bunch of songs toward the end.

I think I just have to admit to myself that I'm not as much of an early rap fan as I remember or would like. Love Snoop's voice. Love some of these songs (Gin and Juice of course, and Gz and Hustlas was a new surprise for me, same for Pump Pump), but the lyrics are like....a lot. Great beats though.
This is such a great mixture of surprises! It's somehow hard punk while being minimalist. Mannequin is such a awesome jam. Who would have thought that I would think is 28 second song is a good song and yet, they kinda pull it off.

Ever seen It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World? Remember that scene where Sylvester is at home and dancing in some sort of drug trance and doesn't hear the phone? That's what this sounds like. Weird, not good, 70s shit that is trying to be experimental, but just overly horny, over the top, and cringy.
I was kind of obsessed with this album when it came out. Not sure why as I was never a huge Beck fan. That said I'm torn between giving this a 5 because I obviously love it or not giving it a 5 because I may be bias because of how comfortable I am with it, but whatever, that's some philosophical rating bullshit that I'm not diving into. 5 it is.
I hate embracing sadness. Really, I hate it. This drips of it from the lyrics to the music. I can't deny that this music gets to me though, like it really cuts. It really makes you feel, so for that reason, I'm giving it 4 stars but I'm never listening to this again.
Wow - I never realized that I was a massive Black Sabbath fan. This is undeniably a 5. Lyrics are so solid. Concept type album. Innovative and super unique (for the time) sound. Like if Led Zeppelin was pissed. I am grading this a 4.75 on my personal tracker, just because this isn't exactly my style of music. Something about Ozzie's voice just rubs me a bit wrong, but it's probably because it's so "70s" and I generally find the 70s a bit gross.

Lots of anti-suburb lyrics. Great musical sound. I can never really get past David Bryne's voice though. It's just a little too weird for me. Some catchy tunes but I feel like David kind sings like we're all marching or something, interspersed with some screaming. A point off for David, plus another 1/2 point off for not being like "I love this"!

Wasn't a 100% into the voice, but it also had it's nice points. Would be a 4.5 on my personal scale.
Pleasant, not offensive, somewhat interesting but kinda like 80s elevator music. Elevated synch-pop is about right. Into some songs (looking at you "Automobile Noise") while others were kinda just annoying ("Heatwave")
I'm three songs in and I'm giving it a 5. Green Onions is absolutely iconic but the rest of these songs deserve to be seen the same way. This version of "I Got a Woman" is an absolute slam dunk. They could have Yoko Ono do solo shit for the rest of the album and I'd still give it a 5.

why is Freak Out! considered a good album? I find it annoying. I understand it's satire but the lyrics are annoying. The music is unlistenable. It doesn't sound like pop music and the Zappa is missing the actual music that is evolving. The year before The Beatles put out 3 great albums. Dylan was putting out albums. The Rolling Stones had great albums. His point is invalid. It's just annoying. No one is claiming that 1960s pop was incredible but it was incredibly listenable. This misses on listenability as well as being an endless, unfunny, pointless joke. Imagine if an SNL skit went on for an hour, with the same joke, but also with terrible music. Fuck, I really cannot express how much I dislike this album.
What's amazing is that this album sounds like it just came out (or maybe I don't listen to modern music?). It's like they set the standard for the next 25 years. BOB was on repeat for me during high school. Fresh and so Clean is in my head all of the time. Ms. Jackson is outstanding. Too many skits and short bits, but alright, whatever.
With a song titled "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey", you know this album isn't going to stop short on being explicit about the message. The horns on this album are incredible. The vocals are outstanding. The lyrics, well, they have a clear purpose. A mixed gender, mixed race funk band that delivers and isn't obnoxious. Hard to pull off, but it does. I was into this. I like a lot of Cure songs. Three Imaginary Boys is an incredible album. I really tried to get into Seventeen Seconds but it just kind of faded into the background. I actually listened to this album 3x without realizing it was replaying. It was just like....nothing.

D.A.N.C.E. is maybe....the greatest song ever written? 😂 Several others were such amazing surprises. Hear me now lord, bring me more Justice albums.
Like I'm all about The Watermelon Man...great track, but the rest of it just kind of fades into the background for me. It doesn't catch me really at all. Talented as hell and funky. I could see dancing around with this but really, just couldn't get into it.
I really like Bowie...like a lot. He's just so cool as a person. He's this enormously famous person but something about him just seems down to earth. That said, this album just didn't strike the same chord for me. Maybe it's my hatred of John Lennon or the disco-style sound on this album. Loved the lyrics, loved some tracks (Young Americans) but a bit less than what I expect from David.

Songs like Stupid Girl really seem to erase any good will The Stones built up with me for Paint It Black. Cool bluesy stuff, but the stones just feel kinda gross in this album. Listened to just the original album songs, which were all great. I like Janis' raw voice and the variety of styles on the album. Polished but not. I'm not like a hippie and find some of these sentiments kinda dumb, but whatever. She can write too. "Windshield wipers slappin’ time" is a great example.

I was about to give this a 4. It had so many great hits. Super Stupid seems like early Gary Clark Jr. There was some funk and some hard rock. The opening track was cool too. Then, these last two songs...weren't...great. Back in Our Minds was unsettling and Wars of Armageddon was just a bunch of noises over funk.
Not all poets can be musicians. This album contains good poetry but Cohen has no vocal talent, and the melodies all sound really basic. I find it difficult to focus on the lyrics because the musical aspects are so offputting. A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes has something that is barely listenable going on but then he feels the need to add some weird twang thing in the background. Like fuck off and just write lyrics dude.
I think Black Sabbath is probably the band that I am most disappointed at for never having gotten into until now. This is the second album I've heard and another just masterpiece. I'm giving it 4.5 stars, just because I still am not 100% aligned to the dark sound
I'm a big Beastie Boys fan and although I think Paul's Boutique and Licence to Ill are way better, Ill Communication is solid, although maybe a bit disjointed. It also seemed a bit dated. On the plus side, it's just FUN and the beats and music are super solid. It's full of hidden gems like Sabrosa and Futterman's Rule. Better than average, but not a star album
Some really catchy, good stuff. Emotional, raw, and really well produced. I'm really into it. There were a couple of songs that didn't really hit home with me like Nocturnal Me, but they're still alright. Just a bit overly theatrical. I'll be listening to this album again and again.

OK, this is a bit more bearable than the other Tim Buckley album I listened to (Greetings from LA) but I'm really not interested in feeling like I'm at some sort of medieval English circus. I think the lyrics are actually quite good, but the music is so bad that it's distracting. I don't even know any of these songs, but I want to. I feel like I'm transported to a smoky club in Chicago. It captures this world perfectly.
"Born on the Bayou" is one of those songs that I had an a mixed-tape that played over and over, so points for the nostalgia. The whole album is soooo....dirty (in a good way). I think the fact that these guys are from California makes it all the better and is amazing. Slight ding for the sub-standard version of "Good Golly Miss Molly", which is kinda frantic, but without the pizzazz of Little Richard. Some songs like Graveyard Train, do just seem like filler though. If you're going to have a 7 song, 33 minute album, don't have half of it be filler. Still Born on the Bayou and Proud Mary raise all boats.

This album is kinda all over the place. I thought I had accidentally clicked on a George Michael album because of the first song. Then it becomes a 90s jazzercise album. The song "Loaded" is pretty good too, but it's just everywhere in 90s music. So...so so.
I respect Patti Smith. She's got great lyrics. I liked a recent podcast interview I listened to where she was the guest (with Ezra Klein), but I'm just not really into this punk/folk stuff. It's alright, but a lot of these songs just don't hit for me. I need my punk to be a bit less folk and my folk to be a bit less punk.
