Fun… but loads of nonsense mixed in

Enjoyed this more than the other 2 albums of theirs I’ve listened to. Last track drags big time though.

First song was alright, 2 and 3 made me feel a bit ill. Cindy Tells Me had a nice bit of Bowie going on. Then Driving Me Backwards upset me again. Enjoyed the title track.

The vocals become very grating after the 18th minute of cellular song and there is no respite following that. The wailing on swift as the wind sounds like he’s trying to wake up from the nightmare that is this album. First song is alright. They can thank me for the 2 stars.

P-funk, uncut funk, the bomb. This is a certified classic.

This is what live albums should be about. Puts you right there in the room with him. If I could give it 4.5 I would.

Perfect album

As far as Jazz records go, this is certainly one of them. Pleasant background music.

Didn’t mind it, can imagine enjoying it more on repeat listens. Last song is the one for me.

Pleasant enough, and I’m sure it would be lovely playing in the background with a ropa vieja cooking away, but I found myself getting bored quite early on.

Easily Lorde’s best work. Very cohesive pop record which doesn’t over stay its welcome.

Feel the same way about this now as I did when it came out, I just can’t get on board with the vocals. Fair play to the man because he was clearly on his last legs when he recorded this. It’s a well written record as you’d expect. Bang Nick Cave on vocals and you’ve got something I’d return to.

Not my cup of tea

Really enjoyed this.

Quite difficult to rate this one. Enjoyed the more electronic parts, but the some of the lyrics were quite embarrassing.

Armageddon been in effect go get a late pass STEP! Classic, unrelenting and massively influential.

Blew the budget on their big single. The musical equivalent of a jazzle sweet, looks fun on the surface but it’s ultimately a bit naff and unsatisfying.

A gold standard jazz record, but that can only equate to a maximum of 4 for me. I think if it had a touch less Wynton Kelly and a touch more James Cobb I could reconsider.

Feel like I’ve listened to every band around these but this one has passed me by. I enjoyed it, Jesus Etc I did recognise and that was the standout for me. Getting The Shins and Yo La Tengo similarities. Could easily be a 4 on repeat listens. You know what fuck it, it’s having a 4!

I dunno this one just doesn’t really fully click for me. I think it’s the long songs.

The fella is a complete twat, but he was less of a twat back here, and this still holds up.

Some decent songs, feels like a collection of demos though overall. Not a fan of the ones the other fella sings. Probably won’t return to this. Bubble & scrapes a 3.

Really toes the line between peaceful and irritating.

Still not massively for me, but there was a time when this would have been scoring lower. I can get something out of it at least nowadays.

Bit of fun, but there’s a time and place.

Hit and miss, some clear standouts, others were a bit grating.

It’s nice and chill but didn’t wow me. Feel like he came in on the wrong key on Reasons and it was too late to back away from it.

Decent, walked so El Camino could run.

Enjoyable for a while but does get a bit annoying if you aren’t in the mood.

Enjoyable, chilled, good vibes. Strong 3.

Other than a couple of songs I didn’t really like it.

I like blitzkrieg bop, but I get why I’ve never given this a chance before. God knows how anyone can make a distinction between any of these songs.

Didn’t mind this. First song reminded me of Bill Callahan. Everybody’s Talkin’ is a straight up classic joint. Would happily bang this on sat round a poker table. You wouldn’t want more than 40 minutes of it though.

Not spectacular, singles are the clear standouts, did enjoy 40 as well. Ain’t bad either, just alright.

Ramblings of a mad man. Got to track 4 and had to call it.

Classic, but last two tracks always get skipped for me. 4.5.

I had a nice time, I’d have probably left before the encore though.

Quite fun, vocals get on your tits after a while. Equator can absolutely get fucked.

Not particularly my thing, but you can clearly hear they’ve put their heads together and worked hard on this. Reminds me of a mate’s dad who insisted on playing this in his car at every given opportunity.

His best work for me. Following up commercial success from GKMC by bringing in the likes of Thundercat and Flying Lotus is bold, got to respect it. Just a really well written, well structured album that needs to be appreciated in full.

A classic. Always preferred the first half mind, just too damn good.

Started out alright but tailed off during the middle. Apparently written as a soundtrack to a fictional film, I think he changed his mind on what the film was 2 or 3 times during recording this. Probably a 2.5.

Probably not top 5 Bowie for me, but still damn good.

He’s got to catch you on the right day. Every now and again he’ll hit you with something where you are thinking ooh I wonder where this goes and then he rips it up entirely, what a tinker. Sprawling, cosmic jazz.

Close to a 4, just find it a bit boring at times. There are some proper standouts though.

Some great songs here. Could easily give a 4. Last couple aren’t as strong though.

Feels A-side heavy this one. Some really good songs, but the more traditional folky ones aren’t for me.

Alexa play New Wave Hot Dogs by Yo La Tengo. **Now playing: The New Tango by Astor Piazzolla.** Enjoyed the first song, the rest I just don’t know if I needed in my life. Started giving me anxiety by the end.

Nice enough

It’s one of those cases where the image and performance of the band is better than what they put to record. It gets an extra point for being produced by Alex Chilton though. Birra fun.
