Groove is contagious, not unanimously through the album however

A let down

Amazingly goofy in the best way possible. Also space in my heart for such comical production, I just wish it push the experimental boat out even further

Much closer to the mark in the second half of the album, I was looking for something longer and more all consuming and I got it. First couple of songs felt like get a sloppy kiss from grandma when your horny, unwelcome but at least it’s wet

Really not my cup of tea, I felt like I was being 4 4ed to death, way to straight and rocky for my taste

Really not my thing, embodies a part of American music which i find bland and whiny. It is quite something that they have 10 million monthly listeners and yet still offer so little in terms of substance or experimentation

Explores existential themes, just not as dramatically as i would like: lyrically but not as instrumentally as Godspeed for example

Much better, would have been a 5 if I wasn’t so into the rasp of Tom waits currently, I find Tim Buckley to be a bit whiny, but maybe I’m just whining

The revolutionary spirit in this album is enthralling, whilst heavy metal is not usually my forte, objectively this album is undeniable

Need a to listen to again, but moving swiftly on for now

Clearly a great album just never sat right with me, have always preferred their old stuff

Tidy and polite

It’s funny to me listening to this as an album and not just sporadically, spurred on by nostalgia. Must admit some of the slappers on the album still seem to slap

Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would

Dissonant tidal guitar twangs and eerie anecdotal story telling make this a crepuscular masterpiece

The whine and mope morrissey can produce is truly a great accompaniment to his horrendous song writing, they go hand in hand. Truly, I find the lyrics unlistenable and the musical backing has not a fighting chance to reclaim any sort of dignity

Completely new to me and it’s one of the best examples for tracing its influence throughout the rest of 20th century music. Can imagine muddy waters rolling in his grave and mumbling something about honky music when this album was described as a take on the blues

This is my gateway album to frank Zappa and so I feel unable to properly rate this

it’s very apparent how much influence this album and Sam Cooke in general, has had on music specifically, omitting his profound impact on black music for now. The song chain gang for example is clearly the inspiration or even blueprint for bb kings’ ‘Worry Worry Worry’. I’m just being quite self indulgent and enjoying those sorts of dots being joined in my head, my relationship to and understand of music as a facet of culture is beginning to materialise. We come a long way from J hus and Giggs

Neoclassic it seems

Not my bread and butter, so no utter to mutter

first album i've enjoyed in a little while, i'm a sucker for a harmonica whilst simultaneously fighting the allegations of loving white-boy-blues. Can safely say that the Cowboy Junkies are better than that

One of those brain worms, like the Arthur theme song, or something like that idk. Without nostalgia this brain worm is more of a tape worm, and not the weight loss type

Much more like it, a psychedelic circus act that is interlaced with squealing guitar slides and a bossa nova heartbeat. Really really enjoyed this and it stands shoulders above the last couple of albums I have listened to just by its sense of adventure. Only a 4 because no sound from the album is deified in my memory

Lives in Southampton now which is just rouge from him, needs a re listen

Again, another part of the puzzle, further and further upstream.

Was pleasantly surprised and then I listened to the lyrics

It’s so abundantly clear that the Beatles and their albums are the spark which steered so much of music in the direction it is pointed to now. That being said revolver didn’t pack the same punch for me as sgt pepper or the white album did, perhaps because it didn’t flourish quite as much experimentally. As I’m writing this, a fear grows within me that I have completely missed the point with this album, shall have to re listen and assess my naivety

pure funkstations

Weird album to rate, i common theme of my listening and critiquing has become the tussle between objectivity and subjectivity. On paper this album is great at what it does, but once again my pallet is tarted by the vocals. ‘Bodysnatchers’ is great and so is the jigsaw tune but I just can’t get over the horrible tone with which the lyrics are delivered. Fuck being a critio be fair, how can I include danceability and stank face into my rating scale without perverting the list completely. Anyhow, overall pretty good, ive just heard so much better in the same scope this album is trying to breach

Really hard to quantify, it’s akin to trudging through a marsh after three slugs of ket and then hearing a war horn ring out in the distance, weirdly trancelike and very dystopian. Iggy is synonymous with music performance and I think thats whats missing here, his shrill cry and his skeletal frame convulsing on stage rather than me just sat on my bed with my headphones on feeling rather bewildered

Production is great and this album is more funky than I would have thought, albeit through my rather snobbish lens of pre-implied hate towards anything released after 2005, i still thought it was okay. Nevertheless, I found frank ocean to sing in a sort of mumble rap/whine and I find it deeply unsettling; softness as a singer is a virtue when the lyrics pertain to the same ideals, these two stars do not align when I’m listening to Frankie boi, for whatever reason that may be

Second half of album becomes a rocket fuelled cosmic flight from classical rock to the liminal space of experimentation and eclecticism

Second half funk metal took me by surprise, as they say don’t judge a flip by its flop

Uninspiring

Nothing really like these, Spotify has it down to a tee when describing their output: distinctly ethereal and gossamer

Would love to listen to this with the windows down, tracing the Welsh coast in my dinghy, cigarette in mouth and speakers turned to the max. I should probably learn how to drive

The clearest separation between subjectivity and objectivity I have had before in terms of albums, undeniably great music just doesn't quite speak to me. I have some friends like that and they are great, the ones who don't expect more than can be given, the ones you text after 3 months and everything is still the same, no new expectation and no resentment. I have this same relationship to supergrass and it is a lovely and amicable thing.
