Liked it. Way more instrumentation than I thought back in 94. Didn’t realize Sabotage was so old. Covers a wide array of beastie boys styles.
Masterpiece. Amazing production, lyrics, musicianship. Can’t believe I didn’t know gangsters paradise was a Stevie sample.
Great album. With these I try and keep in mind genre and release date. It’s funny that this was considered raucous when released. Really like the swing, jazz, crooner sound. Upbeat and fun. Really like the call and response, especially with sultry female vocalist (think “baby it’s cold outside” Christmas song). This is only my 3rd album but it makes sense I keep hearing songs that I am I incredibly familiar. On this album, it is “jump, jive, a wail”. I like how he also plays a good trumpet as many of these vocalists, Sinatra, Darin, Martina etc tend to just be singers. Learned he was the voice of King Louie from Jungle Book, cannot unhear that.
Good album. Right down the middle for the British Invasion. Fun and light. Would never be upset if someone puts it on, but would never really choose it. Lyrics were good and instrumentation were easy going. I can appreciate the fact that they were the forefronts of the concept album/band which is cool
Really liked. Fan of bop music and this album has great musicians. I would give it a 3.5 if possible but will go with a 4 as I really think it’s about a 3.7. Perhaps, because this is only my 4th album on this app I am being less discerning and swaying towards the positive.
Amazing album. Having trouble with using the 5 star system. Is it a 5, no but it is certainly above a 4. Still early on this app. 5th album reviewed, still lean towards rounding up. 4.7
Great album. Good lyrics and tells a story. Hard to not judge it based on his other albums but 3.8
As a big fan of the hippie, counter culture, psychedelic movement I was excited for a band that I am less than familiar. Unfortunately, instead of Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and quick silver messenger, I feel I got Charles Manson. I know this album was towards the beginning of the movement, but if released today I would think it was by some poser trying to score young, easily manipulated groupies. Songs and music were fine with some good moments, but also a lot of “just ok” and many similar sounds. I would give a mid to high 2’s. It’s a shame that when looking at art we as a society are now having to look at it through a social justice and inclusive lens. Wikipedia states that this was at the forefront of racial diverse bands during this movement. I cannot help but think this helped critics decide this belongs on this list. Musically I think it doesn’t. I am looking forward listening to “forever changes” which I assume is on this list based on what I have read about the band Love and their legacy.
