1001 Albums Summary

Southern fried swamp rock and blues! Pretty impressive debut. I'd never heard "Simple Man" but it was a standout for me. It's become a bit of a cliché, but "Free Bird" is still an absolute killer album closer.

Some very good ideas and an impressive display of supreme technical command, but dragged in places (at least for me).

It's whatever. Not my thing.

Perfect debut and statment of intent.

Love and Affection was pretty decent but the rest had me snoozing.

Long Promised Road, Feel Flows, Til I Die and Surf's Up are reason enough to give this album a five. Love the proggy productions and experimental vibe of this album.

Decent but I prefer my reggae a little more dubby and weird.

My preferred 80s pop diva (sorry, Madonna). Cyndi Lauper is a total original. No manufactured, super-polished sound and image. This album is just a lot of fun and full of some timeless songs.

Despite some hot riffs, this album can stay in 1984 for all I care.

Always a mixed bag with The Fall. Their cover of Lost in Music is amongst the best stuff they recorded. I'm Going to Spain made me chuckle ("I think it's time I saw the world, and not Australia"). Results may vary.

Living for the City and Higher Ground are so damn good. Strong 4 on those two alone.

This was a tough listen. Not feeling it at all!

Hard to argue that this is anything but an absolute classic. Borrowing a bit from folk, rock, and blues and then dialing it way up with a heady dose of psychedelia worked out pretty well for these guys.

Sounds a bit dated now but still has some classics.

These guys have a good vibe about them. Not gonna always come back to this one, but if I hear it at a barbecue or on a road trip, I'm feeling it.

Some classic tunes, and a truly original style and sound.

Loud, quiet, loud. We get it - it was the 90s. Move it on.

Track 2, "The Calvary Cross", is timeless and has such a great tone. I genuinely can't get enough of it. I don't think anything else on here rises to its height. The title track is also quite good, but the rest of the album, despite being well-arranged/produced, was a bit dark and sombre.

Just look at this album cover - how can you not love Muddy Waters? What a legend. Five all day.

Very promising debut. These guys have a bright future.
