Haircut 100
2/5
It's not terrible, but I don't understand the inclusion on this list. Even if you take the UK centric nature of some of the selections, why would this be included instead of something like Ultravox or Visage or Howard Jones? (all UK options) Icehouse or Split Enz or Thomas Dolby? These six are all much more worthy "new wave" inclusions than this album -- even if you were just looking at UK options in the same general timeframe, this is a poor choice. Looking at the charts, Asia would be a better option and bring something interesting to the list... Gap Band IV would have been amazing as an inclusion... Flock of Seagulls debut! Scorpions "Blackout"! Anyhow, poor choice. I owned this record in the 1980s and gave it away back then... it didn't stay in my collection for any real duration.

Jacques Brel

OK, so this is the sort of thing I had kind of expected and also hoped for when signing up for this 1001 albums thing. Yesterday I had Limp Bizkit and today I have Jacques Brel. LOL This album definitely broadened my horizons just a little bit. I am familiar with this style but only in passing. It's the first time I've listened to several tunes of this era and style in a row. Brel is clearly connecting the cabaret with what would become early contemporary French music. Glad I listened to it? Yes. Need to listen to it more? Probably not, it was interesting precisely because I had limited prior exposure. Good selection for the 1001 though!

The Associates
5/5
I was so pleasantly surprised to see this record on the 1001. This album was too weird for my friends back in the early 1980s when we were in high school. We listened to some pretty weird stuff at times, Tones on Tail, Liquid Liquid, but The Associates were too weird for most of the folks I hung out with. Listening to it now I'm impressed with it, honestly, it's coherent and yet very very strange, particularly given the time. It's probably one of the more "effected" sounding records I can think of, unusual for the early 1980s. I'd put in in the same category as Soft Cell. Disconnected odd music for outcasts. Lovely. It's totally fine if you don't like the style or the sound, but for some of us, this is great precisely because it's unique. Bonus points for the "Love Hangover" cover!

I like ska but haven't had enough exposure to everything that's out there. Great record, well played, with some entertaining song choices. I'm slightly tempted to give this album a five, but it's not going to change anyone's life... I suppose unless they are inspired to create a ska band!

David Bowie

Huge Bowie fan, and I was so happy when he surprise released this. I listened to it on and off for eight months or so. Great record. I think it shows a lot of maturity vs. some of his other output.
