User Albums Summary

Just listened to it a couple days before it came up. Nice to see all the Canadian content on the extras list. Solid folk, liked it. I'm working on a top 100 Canadian Album list and this came up on it.

It was good to listen to. I've got a rule: Live albums and greatest hits albums don't count usually. If this is about greatest albums, we should be talking about a crafted collection of songs released at the same time. Still, I did enjoy listening to this.

Prefer their self-titled album that's on the list, or Demon Days. This to me is a weaker and less catchy Gorillaz album

The album's from the list are art statements greater than the songs themselves made in the moment. A retrospective of unconnected songs from the last 3 decades doesn't qualify. That said, I of course enjoyed the music.

Further, while metal is not really my jam, so maybe I just don't get it. I didn't really think there was anything new or clever here. The music is done well, but every time the singer talked to the crowd I cringed.

I hate always being so pedantic, but this is not an album. The Grammy Award def'n is 15 mins of music and at least 5 distinct tracks. UK Albums chart requires 4 tracks or 25 mins. This is at best an EP. That said I still wouldn't have rated this high. Not that I don't like it. Every piece of music we enjoy does not need to be on an album you need to hear before you die. It's interesting punk songs are supposed to be 2 min long, but punk is also supposed to break the rules! I just think it didn't work. A punk album with lots of little songs would have had a greater effect. The music is good but not new.

Yello was one of those bands that I was surprised had no albums in the book. I guess they're not for everyone. Some people may think it's too facile, or that "Oh Yeah" was just a novelty song, but I love their music. It's simplicity and classic images and symbolism work for me, and the songs are fun. Of this album proper, I find the songs are all hits to me except for Desert Inn and Let Me Cry.

Good music, good fun. We all might have favourite bands, but it doesn't mean their albums are best albums of all time. This doesn't introduce anything new. It's well performed pop punk/indie, but it's not got anything that makes it the best. I've got lots of bands that I love that I would never suggest have a best album of all time....

* Live albums are an automatic 1 from me. Some of the songs on this album made the list in Homework. It's good, but I take this whole listing idea to be a list of "studio albums" and not "live albums" or "compilation albums". Studio albums are artistic statements beyond the songs on it and are what the list aims at. To repackage songs into live or compilation albums is not in this spirit. Imagine a long lasting talented band that has 40 or so popular songs. You can rearrange them into different live/compilation albums in 100s of different ways. If compilations are allowed we'll end up with 200 Beatles "albums" at the top of the list.
