9/10. Ooh, when I saw this I wasn't looking forward to it because I didn't think Beautiful Freak was all that, but it seems like another instance of the main list just not picking the most enjoyable album to represent a particular artist.

Daisies of the Galaxy is the third studio album by American rock band Eels. It was released on February 28, 2000, in the United Kingdom, and March 14 in the United States, by record label DreamWorks. When the band's label requested that a clean version of "It's a Motherfucker" be recorded, the song was re-written as "It's a Monster Trucker", with modified lyrics and sound clips of lead singer Mark Oliver "E" Everett speaking "trucker lingo" on a CB radio.

I liked the Eels record that was already on the list, but I LOVED this one
Oh yeah, a better entry for Eels by leaps and bounds, just overall very interesting for the time period.
A lovely album, their best
Mr Es beautiful day is such a freaking awesome song. Hadn't heard that in a while. Thanks for suggesting.
Love Eels and have loved Eels ever since I heard Fresh Blood
Beautiful album! The melodies en lyrics fit together incredibly.
Interesting record. Didn't know the artist, Beck vibes also. Nice discovery.
I slightly prefer this to "Beautiful Freak," but I still don't like it. As the cover might imply, this mostly sounds like warped children's music.
Really liked this one. I like the singers voice and I remember this band from the Beautiful Freak album that was on the list. Will check out more of their stuff.
The causes between indie music, transcendental sadness, and time feel complicated in Eelsworld. The middle term comforts, as either an everyday or a just-at-the-right-time. The record explicitly plays with the clock as well: "Angry little whore" is a new archetype, even as aspiration, and infancy bookends.
I love the Eels but for some reason I don't listen to them that often. So I was very happy when this one came up. Great album! 4 stars.
I've heard the name Eels before but don't know anything about the band. I long ago decided in my head they were a garage punk/noise/alternative band, kinda like the Pixies but heavier. Ok that’s the wrongest I’ve ever been in the 1001 albums list. I’m usually at least ~75% right. This falls under the big “alternative” umbrella but beyond that it has no resemblance to what I predicted. I hear a bit of Nirvana in the vocals and lyrics, but otherwise it’s… alternatively poppy? Bit of piano, bit of guitar. Not too bad, didn’t drive me insane but wouldn’t listen again. 3/5.
Rock indie
These chill dudes again
Pretty much what I expected from another Eels album. I think if I was a bit more lyrically inclined I’d have more fun with these albums. 6/10
“I Like Birds” is kind of cute. Other than that track the rest are sorta meh for me. Not my thing in general, although there are a few tracks where Eels overall are not bad.
Pretty solid alt rock, but didn't rise particularly above the pack for me.
Très bon, une bonne écoute ! 3.5
... or how a chronic depressive tries to give the image of a person who seeks to be happy... without succeeding. Luckily I don't see myself reflected in it, but I appreciate the quality of Mr. E's art and especially his inner struggle that he reflects in this set of songs
Eels' music has never been something that really grabbed me. I understand that it's good, but I just don't feel it. I can listen to this and actually enjoy it, but it doesn't stick with me.
Good shit
This was really good. Swings deftly from quirky to contemplative, with a rich musical palette. Much better than the Eels album that made the list. Thanks for sharing. Fave Songs: Estate Sale, Daisies of the Galaxy, Flyswatter, Wooden Nickels, It's a Motherfucker, Mr. E's Beautiful Blues
Eels is good, I love the vocalists voice, but the album is just kinda boring.
Hard to explain but I simply cannot get into his music. Maybe it's the depressive vibe that hangs around the songs, I just don't know.
Whining dross
A trip down memory lane. Nostalgia aside: great album with some timeless pieces.
I used to swear by this album, especially, "Jeannie's Diary" which the former me would try to convince you is better than anything Leonard Cohen wrote. That's still the hill I'm willing to die on.
Good, but not as good as Beautiful Freak that is on the main list.
This is my first user album and I’m excited by this concept because I’m expecting some great albums that even I noticed were missing alongside some total shitpost bullshit. As for this one, I definitely liked it more than the eels album on the list but I also only really remember novocaine for the soul, which was better than any songs on this one. Tiger in my tank was my fav from this one.
Well, it's not even the best Eels album but it's so laden with nostalgia and great songs that it was a joy to go back to!
Mr E's beautiful blues
I gave Beautiful Freak 4 stars and I honestly don't remember anything about it, I must have liked it and I like this too. I'm curious to see if that album reminds me of Beck as much as this one does because if you put this on and told me it was a late nineties/early aughts Beck album I would definitely believe it. That being said regardless of if that's a fair comparison, I really did enjoy this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeTt4-0XH2U Trivia Mark Everett has expressed regret over allowing the song to be used in Road Trip, citing concerns about the album’s flow and artistic integrity. Despite this, the song remains a fan favorite and a testament to Eels’ versatility and creativity. WTF, Mark? Road Trip is an awesome movie. Goddamn right, it's a beautiful movie, uh-huh
Indie music crossing over with Beck and guitar driven rock.
Why this over Electro-Shock Blues?
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Flyswatter
I recognised the languid vibes and gravelly voice, but could place it till the last track (which is an excellent way to end an album)
I did not like Beautiful Freak at all so I was not excited for this album. However, this album is clearly better. It’s more interesting musically and had lyrics that are less self pitying. However, this music is very much of its time and the late 90s/early 2000s production style is very apparent.
Indie rock, indie pop. Ni fu ni fa.
I went back and read my review of "Beautiful Freak", since I recognize that this band already had at least one (maybe two?) albums in the book. My opinion hasn't changed all that much: it does remind me of Beck, with the kind of lackadaisical, laid back atmosphere. Lyrically, it's fine? It feels a bit simplistic at times (a la "I Like Birds"). It's a bit twee, and doesn't really leave more of an impression than "90s jangle pop/rock". Favorite tracks: "The Sound Of Fear", "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues"
Eels has some hits on the Holes and Shrek soundtracks so this was exciting to hear. Reminds me of There Might Be Giants, just a bunch of quirky songs about bugs and birds and whatnot.
Ok
This was an alright album. I’d say better than the last eels album but a lot of the songs on this didn’t stick out in any memorable way. It was a well produced album with good instruments it just fell a little short of me capturing the essence of what other people find great it in. Overall it’s fine but I wouldn’t revisit it. 5.8/10
We had another Eels album on the main list, I do remember that. Little girl with freaky eyes. Gun to my head I couldn't tell you the difference with this one. It's more of the same, again, we're doing the indie rock thing. I feel like I should be nicer to these albums that were picked by fellow travelers but come on guys, is this really "must listen before you die?" Does the album you picked really add anything to the conversation? Favorite tracks: Grace Kelly Blues, Mr. E's Beautiful Blues. Album art: I do like this, it's that old school '50s aesthetic art style. "Dick and Jane" stuff. Very cute, good color scheme. 2.5/5
One Eels LP on the official list was already one too many, and this album is somehow even worse. Playground songwriting, no sense of coherence, and a piss-poor vocalist who sounds like he’s barely trying are only part of the problem here – add in some forgettable backing instrumentals and this somehow manages to be both boring and annoying at once.
