Discovery is the second studio album by the French electronic music duo Daft Punk, released on 12 March 2001 by Virgin Records. It marked a shift from the Chicago house of their first album, Homework (1997), to a house style more heavily inspired by disco, post-disco, garage house, and R&B. Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk described Discovery as an exploration of song structures, musical forms and childhood nostalgia, compared to the "raw" electronic music of Homework. Discovery was recorded at Bangalter's home in Paris between 1998 and 2000. It features extensive sampling; some samples are from older records, while others were created by Daft Punk. The electronic musicians Romanthony, Todd Edwards, and DJ Sneak collaborated on some tracks. For the music videos, Daft Punk developed a concept involving the merging of science fiction with the entertainment industry. Inspired by their childhood love for Japanese anime, the duo collaborated with Leiji Matsumoto to produce Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem, an anime film with Discovery as the soundtrack. Before Discovery's release, Daft Punk adopted robot costumes. They also launched Daft Club, a website which featured exclusive tracks and other bonus material. Discovery peaked high across several charts internationally on release. Critics praised Daft Punk for innovating in house music as they had done with Homework. The album produced six singles; "One More Time" was the most successful and became a club hit. Discovery is credited with influencing pop production over subsequent decades. In 2020, Rolling Stone included it at number 236 in its updated list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
This is the Daft Punk album that should have been in the original list!
Great disco/electronic/house album by Daft Punk. A lot of auto-tune on the vocals used in an innovative way.
I do enjoy Daft Punk, and as I haven't heard this whole album, it was great (although "Too Long" was as advertised!).
Baffling why the original list included Homework instead of this.
peak youtube was the homebrew harder, better, faster, stronger music videos. We didn't know how good we had it.
Was this really not on the original list? Or is it so good they let us have it twice?
A few months ago I went to the theater to see a showing of Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. I got to hear this album with the animated visuals which was a fantastic way to listen. I listened again to just the audio when this came up, and visuals or not, its a tremendously great album. Certainly earns its place on a list like this.
This album is hit machine. Love every note of it
Absolutely brilliant.
Rating: 10/10
Lovely stuff
No way I refuse to believe this album was not on the original list! Out of 14 songs on the album I could not possibly pick a favorite. 5
This is another one that I’m shocked didn’t make the list (and took so long to get on the user list). It’s peak daft punk and is endlessly catchy and exciting what more could you want.
Last night I had a dream about you
Yes, obviously should have been on the original list.
Oh yeah!!! This is soooo good! I defy anyone to listen to this and not instantly become a robot dancer. Seriously inspired and thanks to the person who chose it!
How was this not in the 1001? It'd be in my top 10! Every single track is a stone cold classic or a technical masterpiece.
French house, disco, nu-disco, house, electro-funk. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Not their best, however a brilliant album. Enjoyed it very much when it was released
4.5
This is pinnacle daft punk. Turn of the century making some electronic bangers that still are fantastic to listen to. They have to be one of the best electronic groups of not the best. This album is not only great on its own.m but had such an impact of other music since its release. 8.3/10
French techno!
So I was a little disinclined to like this one at first, as it kicks off with "One More Time," a song I have never particularly liked. But as I got into this, I found it to be an incredibly creative and engaging album. It's really the quintessential post-Millennial party album and a high water mark in its genre. It's less clubby and more accessible than Homework, drawing on a more diverse range of musical styles. Full of quirks and stylistic flourishes that give it so much texture and depth, without ever seeming overwrought. Just a pleasure to listen to. Fave Songs: Veridis Quo; Voyager; Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger; Short Circuit; Crescendolls
Some albums are good, some are great, then there are those like Discovery that is innovative and transformation. This is a brilliant album...I am going 4.5 stars.
This is the superior daft punk album. Excellent stuff
The remix/dance spectrum is not a main genre for me, but there's a reason Daft Punk were crown princes in this arena for decades and I'm always down to spend an hour in their world.
I never enjoyed Daft Punk. Partly due to overplaying, but I find their hits annoying. But I thought this one was better than "Homework." And I can't deny the influence and innovation.
It's pretty great, let's be honest.
Daft punk eh whatever. NI FU NI FA 3/5.
Good shit boys
I've been to so many tech conferences in my life, and twenty years ago this was the music they played as people were gathering in the big hall for the conference keynote to get people "hyped". Didn't really work for me then, and still doesn't today. Just doesn't do it for me. 2 stars.
Nowhere near as consistent as I remember it being. "Face to Face" is amazing, "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and "Crescendolls" are pretty good as well, but the rest is generic, overly long electronica. Really weird production on here as well. Can't describe why it sounds so off to me. It's strangely hollow and uncanny valley. Especially noticeable on "One More Time". "Alive 2007" is better. 2/5.
