Grand Prix
Album Summary

This album has been submitted by a user and is not included in any edition of the book.

Grand Prix is the fifth studio album by Scottish alternative rock band Teenage Fanclub, released in May 1995 via Creation Records. The now-defunct Formula One racing team Simtek provided the car that appears on the front cover. Upon release, Grand Prix received almost unanimous critical acclaim. Writing for The Independent, Andy Gill called it "winsome and reflective", while Angela Lewis of the same publication described Grand Prix as a "breathtakingly superb (album) with finely honed dynamics, nagging harmonies and deceptively simple lyrics". In 2018, Q placed Grand Prix at number 72 in its list of the "100 Greatest British Albums Ever". It was voted number 624 in the 3rd edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums (2018). In 2022, it made number 72 on The Observer Music Monthly's top 100 British albums list. In 2013, NME ranked it at number 282 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Excellent album. I had heard a couple of these songs before but for some reason never listened to it all the way through. Which is strange, because I'm a huge Big Star fan and have always had a positive view of Teenage Fanclub because of their obvious adoration of Big Star. I will be listening to this more. 4.5 stars, rounding to 5.

This is maybe the most consistent Teenage Fanclub album. Thirteen great power pop/rock songs. Bandwagonesque has the best tracks (The Concept, Star Sign), but also some weaker ones.

Love it. I discovered Teenage Fanclub from their compilation album “Four Thousand….” So I was spoiled and took a while to go back to their discography.

For all of the complaints right or wrong, that there is too much 90s UK music on the list, it's ridiculous that there's only one Teenage Fanclub album, when this album and Songs From Northern Britain are right here. Is this them at their Big Stariest? Maybe, but that's a good thing. 5 damn stars.

80s jangle-pop, from the (very) late 80s! A blast from the past even when it was released, but a welcome one. They are one of the most underrated bands, possibly because they were never interested in moving south. A wee Scottish bonus point means full marks!

Melodic, dreamy and bittersweet. This is such a satisfying listen, almost as good as a power pop album can get. It's smarter and more nuanced than a lot of people probably have patience for, but it's an album I can just sit with endlessly and hear new things. "I'd steal a car to drive you home" has got to be one of the great crush lyrics of all time. Fave Songs: Don't Look Back, Sparky's Dream, Tears, Mellow Doubt, Neil Jung, I'll Make It Clear, About You

At first blush I was sort of thinking this was a stinker. But then I started to hear similarities to other bands I like a lot, such as Guster and Rooney. I think it's pretty good! High 3, low 4, but I'm feeling charitable today.

Have always loved Sparkys Dream, rest of this album is great too. Think I need to go back again and listen and may be a five for me. Weird this is 1995 rock and not 2015 indie rock

I don't know, nothing particularly against this but I thought it was a little dull. Pop basically, nothing much to differentiate it from a U.S. band, and the vocalist not particularly strong.

Average 90s alt rock. Nothing standout. 3/5.

I've heard this album before and think the same thing now as before. There's potential here but the generic droning sound is very bleh.

Kind of a Rembrandts-y feel to this, which is I guess appropriate for its release date. Nothing earth shattering or revelatory for me, but it went down easy.

It was ok. Some nice gentle Monday afternoon music. Not setting my world alight though.

I get that a lot of the user list is just people’s preferred picks from their favorite artist instead of what actually made the list but I gotta disagree with this one. Bandwagonesque was way better than this one. This felt a lot more generic alt 90s rather than the sonic youth ish alt vibe of the other one.

Just some more alt rock for the alt rock pile. Not bad, not great. Whatever, man.

Every LP by this band is so bland, as if you took the reigning pop-rock of the 90s and distilled into the most average product possible. This album is another snoozer, just sounds very commercial without anything to give it staying power.

Never heard of this band before but on first impression I thought what a terrible band name. The album itself was a pop rock sound of catchy pop choruses and repeated lines. The instrumentals felt very generic and merely existed. It wasn’t a bad album just felt very mediocre and bland. 5.5/10

Well, this proposal went from more to less, as the tracks progressed it became boring because the songs "tasted" the same. 1.5 stars
