My Love Is Cool

Yes! This was on my short-list for albums to submit, so happy to see it has been added. Honestly, all 4 Wolf Alice albums are pretty solid, but I listened to this one a lot in college so I have a lot of good memories with it. No skips on the main tracklist for me. And they released basically a whole 'nother album via the extended edition. Highlights from that are Storms, 90 Mile Beach, Heavenly Creatures, and Blush. Great pick, 5/5

Great indie rock album. Quite varied in tempo and intention. Some songs really rock, others are more dream pop and quite catchy .

A fine album by a fine band. They get better, but this was a good start.

Listened to this band previously and enjoyed their refreshing take on rock. This LP loses itself at times and tends to wander, but the sense of experimentation throughout makes it a refreshing listen. Wish the guitars were heavier throughout to match the highs of the more aggressive tracks, but overall enjoyed this one and being reminded about this band.

I like the female vocals. Has Metric upside occasionally, but otherwise pretty unremarkable 2010s rock.

Had no expections, but enjoyed every bit of it!

I’ve spent more than 4 years listening to an album a day - Originally I expected to be done more than a year ago but then the user-submitted album assignments began and even though several times I have run out of suggestions for several days the albums keep coming and I now have stopped thinking about when I’m done with this project. Fortunately suggestions like this dreamy, satisfyingly crafted album more than make up for listening to a few duds. This was a debut release?! It feels so well-crafted and modulates itself well… just when I think maybe the listening journey is going to just loll about in the doldrums some pop drums kick in and start driving things forward. I don’t think I’d ever have discovered this album on my own, and god knows the algorithms that are designed to please me based on my listening past aren’t going to venture out too far, so thankfully we still have something like this with some human power to keep expanding our musical horizons.

I’m currently obsessed with Wolf Alice. Honestly believe they are one of the best bands out there at this moment. Anyone of there 4 albums would make this list for me, Iv had the clearly on repeat since it came out. So can’t not give this a very bias 5 stars.

Brilliant alt rock. The first track didn't capture me, but the rest of the album was a rocketship with very little dead air.

Funny I get this the day I am traveling to London for music. Every time I go to London I do something Wolf Alice related because they are maybe my favourite currently active and touring band. I saw them live four times in 2025 and was lucky to get to meet and talk with all of them after one of the shows A signed Wolf Alice setlist is one of my favourite pieces of music memorabilia. I did see the 43 and went to the Hawley Arms (where the band played in its early days) today so obviously this is an instant 5 stars for me. I considered a Wolf Alice album for my submission but ultimately decided against Any of their first three albums could be on here (I love The Clearing but do t think you need to hear it over the other albums) and maybe someone will submit Blue Weekend. I am intending to see Wolf Alice two times this year so yeah I love them. Bros is one of my favourite songs ever. not really getting any but a super biased opinion here but WA is amazing and I love this album. My personal rating: 5/5 My rating relative to the list: 5/5 Should this have been included on the original list? Strong yes.

Very chill and catchy album, perfect for brooding.

I liked this a lot. Musically it is not terribly sophisticated (not always a bad thing). Its main weakness is being so stylistically all over the map that as an album it lacks coherence. But it has enough intelligence and heart to tip into great territory for me.

Love is cool and so is this album

Right up one’s alley – fresh-faced, pop- and New Wave-infected indie rock. The unevenness (endemic to such sub-genre hopping and shape shifting) may be attributed to exploration, a young band’s earnest seeking of a true musical identity, say. A little dream poppy here, a little thrashy there, some shoegaze-y penumbras floating above. “Bros” is most winsome (even allowing for the near-rip-off of Silversun Pickups’ “Lazy Eye”). “Silk” is cool, too, but gives off serious Tennis or Beach House vibes. The hidden track certainly merits greater prominence. Lots of other winners along the way, too – “Moaning Lisa Smile,” and “Freezy” chief among them. Dude could/should sing more often. Front-lady is just the sort one is given to falling in love with (see also Snail Mail, Japanese Breakfast). Somehow missed that they’re British, as they seemed so credibly American. They offer some resonance of Blonde Redhead and Alvvays (more recently). And there’s one cut that sounds all the world like a Missing Persons tribute band. Great choice , recommender. This certainly belongs on list proper. Other records are strong, too.

A great indie debut from a band who keep going from strength to strength. This was my favourite album of theirs for a while, but the new one is possibly even better. Some absolute bangers on this though with You’re a Germ, Your Loves Who’re, and Giant Peach and some really nice more subtle tracks like Swallowtail

A band I keep hearing about but have never got round to giving them a listen, enjoyed it.

This has a lot of potential and I definitely want to revisit this album! Very cool sound.

This was a new one to me, but I enjoyed it. I'll check this one out again.

Fun album, that pulls form an early 90's sound. I like it.

Went in expecting hard edged psychedelia, got Florence & the Machine lite. Not bad. Not great.

At a different time in my life this may have found its way into my heart, but I think I’m too old to fully enjoy the emotions of this. Sophie Ellis Bexter sounding vocals at some point too.

The original albums is a good set of 13 songs that had a wide range of genre bending with modern sound. The deluxe version is 90 minutes and I’d say they get even more creative with the inference between indie rock, shoegaze and poppy sounds. It has a wide range of style while all still feeling quite cohesive. It’s a nice piece of work and all around pretty good. I don’t find myself loving it but I enjoyed it. 7.0/10

Trip hop a la Teardrop by Massive Attack. I hope the upbeat and fast switches keep going.

Good amount of variation in the songs here - it’s poppy, shoegaze-y, noisy and fuzzy. Pretty heavily indebted to 90’s alt, which I won’t complain about. They get a nice NEU!-ish groove going on in the first half of Giant Peach, which I enjoyed. Worth revisiting, I think.

I swear, I did listen to this. I know I did. But I cannot remember a single solitary thing about it. It made that much of an impact on me.

Not that I want to sound as if the guy that I am suddenly wants women singers to compete with each other or anything, but in that far-too-glossy, post-British-indie-landfill category, I think that The Last Dinner Party now beat the crap out of early Wolf Alice. I don't hate this band, generally speaking. I even have the somewhat uneven -- yet also sometimes great -- *Vision Of A Life* on my shelves, along with their last LP *The Clearing* (unfairly panned by a lot of "professional critics", in spite of its actual contents). I don't have the very bland and very linear *Blue Weekend*, though. This one I really *hate*. When it comes to Wolf Alice's debut *My Love Is Cool*, I have a rather neutral stance. A stance that's slightly tilting towards the negative, I have to say... The songs are very competently composed, performed and recorded, I suppose. Some arrangements are worth a quick listen (the very unexpected, oddly-placed interruptions in "Your Loves Whore" are pretty cool, for instance). Yet too many of these songs overstay their welcome for me, or they go to some quite indecisive places, as nicely as most of them start. And the stylistic twists and turns would be better negotiated in some of the band's later albums. The only way I can understand why we have so many reviewers gushing about this quite middling debut in this section is that said reviewers are making the common mistake of confusing style with substance. Never understood the cult fanbase for this band in Britain, by the way (which is maybe why some critics also ended up getting fed up with them and unfairly panned *The Clearing*, very ironically). Yeah, Wolf Alice are harnessing a wide scope of rock genres in this debut, but do they do all those styles justice? Do they write dynamic songs with truly memorable vocal lines in this one album? For me they don't. Beyond the arrangements, most of the tunes feel flat, without anything even remotely resembling to a cathartic moment. Guess clueless youngsters discovering this act during their college / university years fell in love with the *idea* of indie-rock music Wolf Alice was offering them. Hope at least some of them later dug further into the past AND the future to discover better stuff in that umbrella genre. Because if they did so, heck, how can they now say frigging Wolf Alice is the best band in the world? How??? And it's more than a little maddening when you see this British band wearing their influences on their sleeves so visibly -- a very derivative move that can only emphasize the flaws I've mentioned before... Those influences basically go from Hole and The Breeders for the more aggressive tracks, to atmospheric shoegaze or shoegaze-adjacent references such as Slowdive or Beach House for most of the rest, to put it very simply. And this particular record in the band's discography only makes me want to return to the real deal instead (do the reviewers praising *My Love Is Cool* in this section even know those influences that well? Reading those reviews, I have my doubts, honestly...). Wolf Alice have good music tastes. Their love for those old acts is cool indeed. But the old acts themselves are cooler. PS to the user who selected this album: giving a 2/5 grade to Nirvana's *In Utero* is probably the gravest sin you can do in my book (except giving it a 1/5 mark, of course). You won't fully understand the real power of authentic alt-rock / indie-rock until you revise your judgement on that one. For me, that's non-negotiable. As for the rest, and in spite of what I have written in my review up there, more power to you for loving Wolf Alice so much. Browsing through your galleries, I think we can actually see eye to eye about many great acts, and I want to end my rant on a conciliatory note at least.
