Good album. Definitely some tracks on here that I was not as familiar with. Remember finding a good copy of this used at a thrift store in college.
While a fan of Bowie, I've never given this album much attention. I like this era of Bowie - songs are characteristic of the ones you hear on the Bowie at the Beeb recordings. Seems like there are a few instrumentals on here or at least songs with very little singing, which I find rare with Bowie albums. Glad to have 'discovered' a Bowie album this late in the game.
Nope - nothing involving Eric Clapton. Google 'Eric Clapton racist rant'
A formative rap album for me. Chuck D's deep voice and Flava Flav's shenanigans at their prime.
Enjoyed the album but not sure how often I'd come back for a full listen. A few songs were a little too quirky for my taste.
Not a bad listen. At least 3 classic songs that most people are familiar with but I dug ‘Round and Round’. It was a midtempo rocker that I can hear in other bands that came after them. Worlds apart from the Aerosmith that got their 2nd wind after the Run-DMC version of ‘Walk This Way’ that I was more familiar with.
This album is pretty much what I know of bossa nova. The first song is 'Girl from Ipanema' - which everyone knows. Definitely worth re-listens and something I can just put on as background music.
Listened to this album from my brother's recommendation when it first came out. I'll admit that it didn't take the first few listens - the rap style was different than what I'd been listening to such as A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, etc. It was more choppy and less flowing to me. Little did I know how it'd grow on me and pretty much everyone else. It's a classic with some duds in there - like the skit(?) in the first minute and a half of "Method Man" or the use of the word "gooks".
This album was not bad but just not my type of genre.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding the concept of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die but it seems like it’s spelled out in the title. I just have no idea why this would be considered one of those albums. I guess as artists, it’s an accomplishment or milestone to say you played your songs with a symphony. But I’m going to guess the number of fans that have thought “I’d really love to hear some live Metallica songs backed by a symphony!” are few. I could have happily lived without ever hearing this album. I certainly hope the Metallica albums at least up to the Black album are included on this list.
I originally got into RHCP at around 15 years old, I think around the time 'Freaky Styley' was out and stopped following them as closely after 'Mother's Milk'. I sort of outgrew them at that. Actually listening to this album, I found it endearing - maybe from a feeling of nostalgia. The band is really talented and despite some hamfisted bits of being funky and Anthony Keidis' lack of vocal and lyrical virtuosity, I enjoyed listening to this album and have a new appreciation for their later works.
I've been in some type of mood for this type of music lately. Definitely good for the occasional listen.
This still stands up after all these years.
Steely Dan can be polarizing but I am a sucker for their catalog and this one is one of their more solid albums.
My introduction to Pavement in the early 90s and one that I regularly go back to still.
I always appreciated Jimi Hendrix but never truly dug in to his albums. This was a great listen - it really is a classic album for a reason.
Great album with a number of songs that could be considered ‘hits’ or at the very least, ones you’re already familiar with.
Again, another album full of classics.
This album was a letdown to me when it first came out. It's since grown on me a little but hard to compare it to the feeling of listening to Master of Puppets or Kill 'Em All for the first time.
Classic - love this album. One of my favorites when I went down a Bowie rabbit hole in my earlier years and still stands up. The tracking is great - each song seems to be in the right place. Even my least favorite track, The Bewlay Brothers (still a good song), is just a great closer song.
Whew - I’ve enjoyed other John Coltrane albums but this one just didn’t work for me. Maybe it was my mood but it was just hard to listen to.
