My Aim Is True
Elvis CostelloBetter than I expected—especially because I didn’t like the last EC album.
Better than I expected—especially because I didn’t like the last EC album.
Not really my cup of tea, although it was fine to have running in the background while I was working. Enjoyed Trash Tongue Talker though.
Makes you want to dance, sing along, and gives you all the feels
I guess I’m not a jazz person. Good for one listen but wouldn’t seek it out.
Never really listened to BS before and it’s not my type of music, but I think it’s a really good album of its type. The first song alone had my heart pounding in a good , creepy way.
Meh. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it. Enjoyed it most when I was walking through the woods with my dog. It fit that atmosphere. Was just waiting for it to be over though, by the end of the album. Some of the instrumentals were quite beautiful—vocals a bit whiny and slurry. Wouldn’t convince me to listen to more.
Such variety. Love this album.
This album made me wish I could be at a concert of this album with my friend, Dave. Dave has a great laugh—we would’ve been doubled over for hours at some of the cringey lyrics on this album. Seriously, Baby Girl Window is a title of a song? Alas, I had to listen alone. I’m new to this list of albums and have a lot of listening to do, but c’mon. Artists have been releasing full albums since the 50’s. How are some of these albums making the top 1001 you have to listen to before you die? There have got to be plenty of great albums to chose from. A little surprised at what’s making the cut.
Don’t know that I’d listen over and over but I can imagine their music as part of an indie movie soundtrack or playing in the background of certain restaurants giving a specific kind of vibe to the piece or place.
Okay—not my favorite, not terrible.
Took me back to my childhood. I never knew who sang the songs I liked, so fun to find out ZZ Top sang some of them. They must’ve known they’d made it when Sharp Dressed Man was used on “Alvin and the Chipmunks”. :0) Not a huge fan of TV Dinners though. Would’ve thought it was a Weird Al song if it was funny, but it was mostly just blah. I’ve read that the video was popular though.
Pretty consistent album, with of course, the wonderful Bad Moon Rising
Some of the songs were pretty decent and I added them to my workout playlist, but some I wouldn’t listen to again. I did love how they didn’t take themselves too seriously—made the album more fun.
I wanted to like this and did with the first song, but then every song sounded the same. Ended up meh for me.
I was listening to this on my phone while getting ready in the morning. It felt as though I was on hold with the bank. Perhaps if each song were only 20 seconds long, the album would be okay. But they went on and on, repeating endlessly. In My Arms and Rikki weren’t bad, Musclecar made me giggle with cringe, and Destroy Rock and Roll just listed a bunch of artists I’d rather listen to and whose albums I’m waiting for.
Enjoyed the heavy funk but the lighter stuff on the album not as much. Some fabulous 70’s vibes here though.
That was one weird, funky album. Kind of liked it but pretty sure one listen will be all it gets from me. Would love to know what the artistic version was behind the Armageddon number. All in all, strange but in a good way.
I find myself questioning why I signed up for this list of albums. This was another disappointing one. Whiny, drab, monotonous.
First time listening to a whole album of Bowie’s music and I really enjoyed it for the most part. Some catchy tunes, interesting lyrics, and a really fun concept. Does anybody else imagine Adam Sandler in his Wedding Singer persona when Bowie is singing the last bits of “Star”? (It just kind of sounds like the way he was performing.) No, just me. Okay.
I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would. I agree with another reviewer that the second half wasn’t as strong as the beginning, but overall I found the music light and fun, a little bit of sunshine.
Just a few notes in and you can tell why EJ is such a star. The instrumentals alone are gorgeous. Add in his smooth voice, catchy tunes, great lyrics—love it.
I was a kid all over again listening to this.
Oh, yikes. I gave this a 2 only because JT does have a good voice, although it’s a bit too slick and breathy for me in these songs, and the album is competently produced, but seriously, this is the album David Silver would've put out on Beverly Hills, 90210, if we’d ever heard an entire album from him. Soulless cheese. I couldn’t listen to any song all the way through. Never Again did have a promising instrumental opening but even that didn’t pan out.
First time I’d listened to this album—I pretty much know only the popular side of The Beach Boys. Didn’t immediately love it but I think it warrants another listen for sure.
Some great songs, some a bit more meh. But some great lyrics.
Wanted to hate it—thought I would from the unbelievably long intros to the first song and to “Opening”, but it wasn’t terrible. If this had been a band I saw at some bar, I’d say “Hey, they’re not bad,” but they also aren’t that good. Who chooses this list, I’ll never know? In the end, meh. I may give up on this app and just ask people I know what albums they love.
Obviously they have their devoted fans. I am not one of them. Here Comes Your Man was pretty decent and saves the album for me. I guess I’m just not in love with angsty, aggressive music and I didn’t find La La Love You to be that clever. Instrumentals were pretty good. Guess this is a 3, maybe.
Had heard of Jethro Tull but never listened to them. Sounded a bit more folksy than I was expecting. They really weren’t bad and I very much enjoyed the guitar on Cheap Day Return.
I had just about given up on this list when it hands me this gem. This kind of surprise is why I’m here—fabulous music I didn’t know I couldn’t live without. Super fun album where they are all having a great time!
Definitely a reason why Aretha is the Queen of Soul. R-E-S-P-E-C-T alone earned the albums 4 and everything else was icing on the cake.
A skipping record…wonderful.
I don’t have enough years in my life to justify wasting time listening to 20 songs of this. I liked Cloud Song. I can imagine the strange movies all of this music would make great soundtracks for, but it’s not for me. Gave it a 3 because I think it’s a good example of its genre—I just don’t like the genre.
Tried to listen—too foul for me. Did listen to Gin and Juice as it was listed as Snoop Digg’s most popular. Based my two on that.
Love jazz with lots of wind and brass
Overall a pretty good album with Its a Sin and What’ve I Done to Deserve This being the best, IMO., although I’m not a huge fan of techno dance club style music. But I had to deduct a star for Shopping—a song that seemed to showcase the worst attributes of 80’s music.
I’d never listened to Elvis Costello before but I thought I knew what kind of music he sang. I was wrong. Meh.
Some of the music is fun, but there’s only so much entendre one can take. Have it a 3 mostly out of nostalgia.
Really enjoyed this one—great instrumentals and soulful vocals. Will listen to this album again for sure.
Better than I expected—especially because I didn’t like the last EC album.
Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it
Definitely dated but also definitely an album that should be on this list due to their influence. Love Run-DMC!
Not bad, but not something I’ll listen over again. Dirty and Beautiful were both good, but overall I think the album is overly long and would benefit from cutting many of the less interesting songs.
Meh
I don’t know that I’d listen to it again—too much falsetto for me—but it did have a pretty good groove.
Pretty decent and definitely an album with a lot to say. Have always loved the haunting melody and plaintive way Tracy sings Fast Car.
I’m not a huge techno fan—too much repetition for mes but several songs were good and Don’t You Want Me is very good so it’s a high 3 for me.
I tried to give this a good shot. I know Kid Rock has entertained our troops overseas so he started in my good graces. The first song was not bad—could definitely see working out to it—it’d keep me moving. Went downhill from there though. Too much foul language and goofy lyrics. He’s getting a 2 only because I appreciate those who take their time out to support our military.
I always enjoy Simon and Garfunkel. Music that pulls in the heartstrings, interesting lyrics, but something so simple that you can have it in the background while you study and stay focused. I enjoyed the old people talking—a little slice of long forgotten life.
Really enjoyed the instrumental portion of their songs. The lyrics were hit and miss for me. Better than I thought it would be.
Having lived in Germany, sometimes Germans love weird things just for the sake of being weird. To me, this is a really violent version of Ross Goeller’s music. Reading the reviews, I’m sure a live concert would be an experience you’d never forget. For listening on my phone, I’ll take other choices. Pass.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Love Stevie Wonder and the all the funk was fun. Bonus that the lyrics had so much meaning. I don’t however see myself replaying the album. It’s really more of a one and done for me. I guess I find his more commercial stuff something I’d rather listen to on a daily basis.
I enjoyed it but was surprised by the number of covers on the album. I don’t think it’s the best Beatles album but it was interesting to see this stop on their journey.
Well, I gave it the old college try. In the same way that not every improv skit is amazing, neither is every jazz song. These could’ve done with judicious cutting and although I Really enjoyed the beginning of the second song, but it quickly settled into the same rhythm as the first, what I think of as train wheels clacking (chugga chugga, chugga chugga) that drove me a little nuts after a while. Didn’t hate it viscerally but it’s just not something I loved.
Really enjoyed Smoke on the Water—cracked me up that my teenager knew the song right away. Apparently the marching band plays it. :0) The rest of the album was meh for me.
Not what I was expecting, given the name. The first song had promise. After that, it was just shouting. Not for me.
Creepy murder stories told to music. Hard pass for me
Honestly, it’s the Beatles. I expected to like this more but I found so many of the songs boring or tedious. Maybe it’s just really hard to like entire albums of anyone’s work.
My dad didn’t like Willie Nelson’s voice so we never listened to his music and I assumed his music was bad. But I thoroughly enjoyed his album and the melancholy feel to his songs. His instrumental work is sublime. Downloaded the album and will listen to it again for sure.
It was great to hear young Elvis, just starting out. I’m not convinced this is the best album I’ve ever heard, but it was truly a game changer and certainly deserves to be on this list. I love that Elvis just sang what he loved, whether his cover was worse or better than the original is up for debate, and out of that he sparked a whole new sound. For that, and for several tracks that you just can’t help but love, Elvis has to get a 5. This kind of album is why I started listening to this list.
Only listened to the last two songs, per reviews by other listeners. I’m finding my music tastes are not as eclectic as I thought. I know Jimi Hendrix is a legend and I’ve heard some of his music that I liked, but this wasn’t it. 2 stars because of his legendary status.
This album came out when I was in college and while I enjoyed the songs played on the radio, I never listened to the whole thing. I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed the album. Lots of good riffs and the roughness of KC’s voice. Good stuff.
Man, his music is fun. Not sure how he had a voice after singing, but what a great album.
A bit of an odd name given the sound of their music, but I had heard one of their songs before which surprised me. Good tight harmonies? Decent sings. Very listenable and downloaded some so it’s a four for me.
Great skill does not equal great music. Man, this just wasn’t for me. Couldn’t finish because I felt angry at wasting my own time.
It’s definitely a classic and you can’t deny MJ’s impact in music and dance, although he was a pretty broken and awful human by the end. Some of the songs have aged badly or were never any good in the first place, but there are some real winners here that still make me dance and sing along. For those, I give this a 4.
Yah, no. Not for me. Great drums but I prefer my music not be to someone yelling obscenities at me.
I had never heard any of these songs before but really enjoyed most of them right off. SW has a great groove to his music and an earnestness to his lyrics that I appreciate.
I bet they had more fun making this than I did listening to it. In the right swanky jazz club swilling classy drinks, I can see myself enjoying this and a great conversation. In my kitchen, not so much. Couldn’t force myself to finish, even though I know he’s a jazz great.
Listening to this, I can see I’ve been too harsh on some of the recent choices. Those others were more the competent musicians. These guys…this repetitive droning. A song might start out promising but don’t worry—they’ll repeat it till you’re ready to tear your ears off. This music could be utilized for torture by the government.
Totally enjoyed the shortness of the songs—like a flight of punk. A little sample of each. Made it a lot more interesting that way. However, not since MmmBop have I heard such diction. No idea what he was saying most of the time. Still, not bad.
Really enjoyed this album. It had a clear cut message from start to finish and set out to do more than just entertain.
Didn’t listen to the whole album, just the first four songs. The repetition in the first song started to hug me until it began to build. Then I thoroughly enjoyed it. The rest didn’t stay with me. I’m giving what I listened to a 2.
If you had played this for me with no knowledge of what I was hearing, I’d say it came out in 83 or 84 so I can see it’s ahead of its time and probably influenced others after it. That said, I still found it fairly boring. The only song that produced a strong reaction from me was Other Side of Life which I hated for the whiny tone to the vocals, although the lead singer sounded decidedly Duran Duranesque. Best I can do is a 2.
Fun and danceable. I’ve never listened to Brazilian music before but enjoyed hearing the Portuguese. May not give it another listen but it was good for to hear something new.
Oh, the 70’s. I usually love your music. Found this boring but others really love it, so I guess there’s someone for everything out there.
I enjoyed this quite a bit for being mostly covers. Not groundbreaking but she was easy to listen to.
Had never listened, at least on purpose, to Kasey Musgraves before. Nothing objectionable but rather like a discount version of old Taylor Swift songs. Nothing groundbreaking but decent enough.
Really lovely concert album. Even more impressive reading others comments and learning it was improvised and changed on the spot to accommodate the lesser piano he was using. A truly gifted musician who was even thrilling himself. Glad this came up on the list as I’ve never heard of him before.
A bit strange—felt a bit like listening to an Atari game soundtrack at times. I swear the opening noise on the second song is the sound after Pac-Man eats the power pellet and is chasing the ghosts. But I strangely didn’t hate the album. Didn’t love it either—will probably not listen to it again—but I’ve heard worse. On this list.
Meh
Never heard of her before. Nothing groundbreaking but not terrible. Must admit I don’t listen to the whole album but what I heard is about a 2.
I don’t know that I have ever listened to an entire Stones album. It was okay. I appreciated it more reading others’ comments—definitely a progression to their music.
Rather enjoyed the pathos of this album. The harmonies grew a bit repetitive but the instrumentals were lovely—especially the mandolin—and while I wouldn’t want to listen to the whole album at once again, I’d certainly listen to individual songs in a mixed rotation. They certainly brought you in to the tragedies oft their time and place.
I can’t believe I was a teenager in the 80’s and never heard the songs off this album. Overall I thought it was pretty good—songs that make a point while still being good songs to listen to. Aggressive and funky, a good combination. My one con was lack of dynamic. Everything felt at the same level to me—you can only shout something so long before your shouting is tuned out.
Never heard any Malian music before. Rather enjoyed it, particularly the bluesy number. The blues is the blues no matter the language.
Thought this one was very listenable. Nothing sticks out at me—it’s the weekend and I listened on Friday—but it was one I enjoyed all the way through.
Not my favorite Elvis album but “Suspicious Minds” and “In the Ghetto” are worth several stars just by themselves. I often wonder, with albums like this, if this is the music he (or whoever is in the particular album) wanted to make and would they have been a star if this was what was first released. But you can’t deny Elvis’ place on this list. He changed music forever.
Other than the foul language, I pretty much enjoyed this album. Made me nostalgic for the early 2000’s, and I didn’t even listen to this album then. The lead singer’s voice just took me back.
I know I’ve heard music by Steely Dan before that I enjoyed more. This didn’t feel like their most interesting to me.
Some really good songs that I enjoyed, but quite repetitive. I was drying my hair while listening to part of this, and every time I turned off the dryer, it was like, hmmm, that sounds a lot like the last song.
Never heard of them before but their music was really pretty decent.
I usually like Eminem but this is just a whole lot more cursing and vulgarity than I feel like listening to today.
I really enjoy the melancholy nostalgia that I hear in Randy Newman’s voice. It brings a lump to my throat without really trying.
I've tried multiple times to like U2’s music, as many people really like them and feel their songs are important. But I’m fighting a losing battle—their music is always boring and tuneless to me. Sunday, Bloody Sunday is the sole exception.
Really a pretty fun album filled with a fair amount of hits.
One of my dad’s favorites from when I was growing up. Can’t hear it without getting nostalgic but there’s also just some really good music on here.
Okay, I Love My Car is undeniably terrible, but the rest of the album is so good (any album that contains Bohemian Rhapsody is a winner in my book) that it still scores a 5 for me. Found a couple of new songs for me that I loved and will download. Their harmonies are so tight, FM’s vocals are so strong, their instrumentals are amazing—what rock band has harps in their music? Loved it. Overall, their music was playful. But Love of My Life put an unexpected lump in my throat. How can you not give this a 5?
If only ever heard of their second song. The rest weren’t terrible but lot very interesting.
Overall, a pleasant album to listen to while I was studying. 3 real winners with Sloop John B, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, and God Only Knows. Their harmonies are always so beautiful. This album proves how little I know about music. Had no idea it was so influential.
Maybe I’m tired but I found the album pretty one note and a bit dull. A shame because I really enjoyed their last album on here and I get their importance musically.
Not terrible, but not something I’d come back to and listen to again. Made the mistake of listening with AirPods in—the instrumentals are a bit screechy and tough on the ear that way. Probably better on just a regular speaker.
I don’t usually love live albums, but this one is just so much fun. Johnny Cash has so much charm and humor and an authenticity to him that is winning. Fun to hear the reactions and listen to clever lyrics, even if the tunes are a bit repetitive.
Takes me back
Cry to Me was worth a 5. The rest was a bit blah.
All covers. Not my favorite Willie Nelson, (and given how much my father hated his voice, I feel guilty saying it) but I think he has a melancholy to his voice that works with some of these oldie but goodies. That said, I prefer him singing his own songs overall.
I just find him boring
I’ve always liked the Mamas and the Papas. Such tight harmonies and a dreamy quality to their music. This album contains my favorite, Spanish Harlem.
