It’s just too long. I have a hard time judging Kanye of 2010 with Kanye of 2024. He might be the worst rapper on his own album (that’s still pretty good considering the heavy hitters). He’s definitely the worst singer and the auto tune is not great. Is there a Chris rock interlude that just went on way too long??? Cut out a half hour. I think there’s a great album in there
Didn’t know this album existed. Ok. Kind of discordant and experimental sounding. Not one i’d revisit.
I don’t enjoy robert plants voice, especially when he gets to cat in heat yowling levels. Felt vocals and kind of lame lyrics get in the way at times. Some songs are a bit long and repetitive. But the highs are high Kashmir is great.
Biased 5 star vote. Been listening to Metallica since I was 8 in 1986. One of the best produced and sounding live albums I’ve heard. Unique idea that doesn’t make sense on paper. No Leaf Clover and the underrated -human are really strong songs. If you know anything about Metallica, James Hetfield’s vocals have a lot of feeling and depth as well. As a long time fan, there are some songs I wish were there, but wouldn’t change the set list, would only add.
1-5 is 5 star. 6-10 is 2.5 star-ish. A 4 then
It’s great. Remembered it as losing a lot of steam after the first 3-4 tracks. Raising Hell is a great song I’d completely forgotten about. I’d give it a 5 except it resurrected Aerosmith. At the time that was cool and remained ok for awhile. However it resulted in “I don’t want to miss a thing” so minus one star. (Not really, I was giving this a 4 anyway).
Liked a few things - low key, laid back mood, smooth delivery But the repetition got old fast. I never want to hear the sentence ‘I left my wallet in el segundo” or the name “Bonita applebum” again.
Liked the mix of bowies style and jazz. Just not my style.
Weird. Pretty sure one of the last songs was a gaggle of geese talking to a hunter or farmer? The story behind the album is quite interesting, I just couldn’t get on board with it. Yet, somehow this felt ahead of its time and influencer of music to come. I can appreciate that, I just didn’t enjoy it.
felt like a transition from 80s to 90s. Liked more as the album went on. Good vibe.
Was not expecting to like it this much. Changes is a great, great song. The rest of the album is paced well and the piano is great. Sold 4+.
Great groove through entirety of album. Nice vibe with meaningful lyrics.
I just learned electronica sparks anxiety for me. Even when it’s mellow like this. Thought it would be a good album to listen to while doing some worK. Didn’t work out that way.
Pretty Typical cure.
Starts strong and fades a bit. Guitar work is clean and interesting throughout My sister had this on vinyl back in the day. Bit of a different listening experience.
Great guitar work, arrangement and playing Enjoyed more as the album went along. Will listen again as I struggled to understand the lyrics and I think his songs will resonate quite a bit with me. Would have been a surprising five if the lyrics came through.
Average. Babylon is a good time. Thought there were some weird, unnecessary touches added throughout and got a bit repetitive on the back half Probably won’t listen again and wouldn’t be interested in seeing this guy live. Kinda mid as the kids say.
I really enjoy bluegrass and old country. Very familiar with Knoxville Girl and other Appalachian murder ballads. Which is a crazy genre when you think about it. I like the Louvin Brothers but hadn’t listened to a full album in one go. Thought it would get boring and grating. However I enjoyed this one from start to finish. The vocals do get repetitive. Lyrics are cool, just the vocal style goes to the well a few too many times. I definitely miss country like this, though pigs’ll fly before modern country stops focusing on getting drunk in a lifted truck and throwing furniture off balconies.
Great album. Kinda bad luck it came in a specific run for me. Had dire straits and Louvin brothers right before the high both have basically 0 distortion in the strings. I know Hendrix was kind of a pioneer with the distortion, just became a bit overused as the album went on. Liked the real bluesy tune and did not care for the psychedelic tune. Everything else seemed a good mix of the two styles. The first bars of Purple Haze are just fantastic.
Favorite album so far from a band I hadn’t heard of previously. Felt like a road trip, I just wanted to throw it on and head a direction. Such a mix of styles while keeping a consistent through line. This album will definitely go in my personal rotation and I look forward to their other albums.
Definitely could have died without listening to this. I’ve skipped or changed stations more incubus than I’ve ever listened to them. Was hoping the deeper cuts would be at least decent. Nope. The vocalist is terrible, the lyrics are pretentious, everything else is ok at best. What is even the genre, soft Nu-metal? Definitely sounds like a band finding their sound. I think they are still looking 25 years later. To sum up, this sucks hard.
I don’t get simon and Garfunkel. Always seemed like a you had to be there type thing. So if I was puffing the magic dragon in Greenwich village in 1966, I might be all over this. Judging by my reaction to pot, it would be a race between the pot and the album to see what knocks me out first. I guess I’m more like Bluto in animal house than a beatnik/hippie.
Enjoyed more than I thought I would. Familiar with goodie two shoes, but not this Felt like the Sex Pistols if they really learned to play, knocked off the rough edges, and had a great producer. (Though that pretty much would make the Sex Pistols uninteresting) Liked this one more than I thought I would. Had the two disc remaster, so it seemed like it went on too long, but they may have been the deluxe version.
Pretty gimmicky. Beats were good but overall way too long. Never a fan of the skits. 3000 is a solid song. Though I did I enjoy the references to a a horse in a hospital and half man, half shark, half crocodile. John mulaney and ManBearPig are good times and bump this up to a 2
Wasn’t sure what to expect. Always thought what’s the story morning glory was above average, but didn’t really get the hype about Oasis. Took me a couple songs to get into it and accidentally listened twice due to a work thing. Really grew on me. Liked the full sound and could feel their influences, while it still felt like a unique sound. Could hear some Beatles, Bowie, Sex Pistols and it went a lot harder than I expected. Solid 4 for me
Great debut album. Liked his later efforts much more. This felt produced like WuTang with the dirtier East coast sound. Perfect length. Feels a 3.
Not big into prog, which I think this is? Roundabout is a good tune I was familiar with. Sounded a lot like Chicago I think. In fact I’m pretty sure I thought roundabout was a Chicago song. Anyway, not a horrible listen, didn’t really standout. EXCEPT for the (what I think) is Spanish style guitar sprinkled throughout.
I think there’s a great album in there
It was ok and part of the list.
It’s fun but gets pretty tiresome even at the length. Once you’ve heard the first few songs (which are great) you’ve pretty much heard everything you need to hear.
Too long and got a bit repetitive. Overall I liked it and the variation created within a central sound. Wish they could have trimmed a little fat is all.
I enjoy traditional music from all over. I appreciated the explanations since I am not super familiar with Indian music. Always liked the sitar in Paint it Black (favorite song, all time) and even Metallica used sitar in Wherever I may Roam. Cool album, appreciate the lesson and will definitely look more into traditional Indian music. It is a cool, mysterious vibe (I’m probably brainwashed from the shows and such using sitar to indicate mysterious, foreign vibes). Still cool af
I don’t understand jazz. Feel like the musicians are so good by the time they are able to play jazz. It’s hard to differentiate what’s good. The note precision and timing is so good on this album. Like too good. Plus I saw the movie with the jazz drummer and I am too dumb to think of the name. Miles teller and the guy who played the newspaper guy in Spider-Man. For Christ’s sake what is wrong with me. My brain keeps telling me it’s drumline or rickroll neither are close. Jeez, it was a normal day, felt with it for the most part. What is happening? Anyway, that movie every one knows makes it hard for me to listen to jazz. Like watching Chinese gymnasts or any Olympic swimmer. Like you know you are watching the pinnacle of that event, but you can simultaneously see or hear all the absolute torture and sacrifice it took to get there. And the there is my monkey brain unable to even begin to appreciate just how good they really are. Though it was an unseasonably cool evening. I drove through dusk with my windows down and this album playing. That experience was enjoyable. Ill give ol’ Dave a 4 due to the idiocy of this review.
Have Van Morrison and Dave Matthew’s ever been seen together? Just got a similar vibe between the two, not really the same musically I don’t know. It thought this was ok.
Psychedelic surf punk? I liked it. Where is my mind is a classic. The rest are ok to pretty good. 3 with a bullet.
Steely Dan is boring - the proto-elevator music. It doesn’t suck and it isn’t good. Band name has an interesting backstory.
It was ok with really good guitar playing
Really good! Felt old school meets new school. No real standout songs, but good variation and consistent vibe
Good listen. Had the Ramones earlier in the week and felt a lot of similarities. Liked this better Interesting to think what buddy holly could have done.
Hello is a really good song. Well written , engaging lyrics and performed super well. Since that song was ubiquitous when it came out, I don’t think I really listened to it. Really subverts expectations The rest of the album is ok, not much my style.
So 80s My dad grew up in north St. Louis and saw Tina a lot when she was coming up. Talked about raucous shows. Missed that here as it just sound like corporate 80s rock. Given her story, I wish they made the backing fit her story and a lot of the lyrics. Vocals are great, just feel it contrasts with the music not in a good way.
Exactly as advertised in the album title By the time I get to phoenix drags, other than that, this was a great listening experience.
Thought this was just ok. Nothing really stood out well put together, I guess I expected more
Pleasantly surprised. Figured it was going to be entirely gimmicky as I remembered scooby snacks back in the day which is still a fun song. A more subtle hip hop rock mix. Fun at the beginning, more hard hitting on the back half. A fun time, though maybe a little long.
New Year’s Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday are good. The rest is blah and I don’t get the attraction of u2
Is this the soundtrack for Dary’s Super Soft birthday party? Steely Dan is so boring. I don’t get it.
Ok. Didn’t care for the vocalists.
Didn’t expect to like this. Might have been a perfect storm of my headspace at the time. Mysterious, sexy, haunting
Alternated between movie soundtrack and video game soundtrack.
Ok. Kinda like Radiohead but more boring and the singer is meh
Listened at perfect time, was cruising a lake area headed home from a long weekend of hiking and paddling. Sun was dropping and this album just fit the mood.
Not what I expected from rundgren. Ok. A little too easy listening for my taste
Ok
Every ac/dc Album is a 3
Felt like listening in a park on a summer night.
Modern disco?
Quality but not made for me and not my style. The thank you song at the end was weird considering they broke up after this.
Vocal Harmonies are really good the big songs are still around for a reason Just not my style.
Seems pioneering given the release. Electronica is just not for me
Love the funk.
Didn’t expect to like. Did like very much after the first song.
Really enjoyed most of the album, the only knock I have is the background conversations that were not clear enough to understand and just clear enough to get in the way of the experience. Just didn’t understand what he was trying to do. Otherwise a a good listen
Wish it was longer.
Kinda fun, pretty repetitive.
Better than I expected.
Hard to judge this as times have changed. Still think it’s and revolutionary and necessary hip hop album. Kind of like hip hops grunge or punk movement. But the themes are just… bad. Probably a 5 15 years ago, but I got take it down to a three.
Feel like a high degree of difficulty and I liked it more and more as it went on. Ultimately not something I d likely need to listen to again.
REMs REMiest album I think. At least it’s the one I consider quintessential REM
Pretty good, fun
Never listened to the whole thing. Almost perfect.
A bit bloated and over produced. Cut it down a bit and it’s a 4, as is it’s a 3 from me.
Listened to version with extra tracks on Spotify. Too extra. Not sure at what point this album became a drag, but I assume it was before it was before the album xtra tracks. And the live song at the end was super obnoxious.
Nix the skits and this is probably a low 5.
I’ve always felt like you either love Janis Joplin’s voice or you hate it. No in between. I love her voice and I feel like everything comes together for this I love her voice and what she emotes. Always thought it was cool kristofferson said me and Bobby McGee was her song and as much as I’ve heard that song, I don’t get tired of it. It’s a 5 for me.
It’s probably better 80s Brit pop rock than most. Not my scene and seemed every song was pretty interchangeable Just didn’t resonate with me.
Not an unpleasant listening experience. Feel like I can hear influence on later artists. Not my thing.
Feels like the score for a musical. Couple good songs on there. But, my god, the sheer 80s of it all.
Ehh, had a tom waits feel at the beginning and just felt like they didn’t push what they were doing far enough
Thought the vocals were a bit loud in the mix covering what sounded super interesting in the background. Got a little tiresome
Ok. Never really rose above, nor feel way below. Perfectly ok. Liked their later work a bit more.
Was a 3
A 3 for simply being titled exactly what it is.
I typically like emmylou Harris. Didn’t think this was the best example of her work.
I think the FDA had a recommended daily amount of Tom waits. I think this album goes over I appreciate Tom waits for just not giving af. Hard to listen for a hour though.
I’m a big Metallica fan. This is probably my least favorite album. Though it’s still good and I get why it broke them big. It’s got baggage for me, 1991 and I had already introduced my friends to Metallica. Those same friends acted like they discovered them and I was the bandwagon fan. Plus my 6th grade recently ex girlfriend was talking about listening to them now. F all them. Haha. It’d be a 4 for me with or without the baggage.
Really enjoyed this. The percussion is fantastic. Expecting jazz and (for my cretin tastes) and a this blasts at you and maintains a frenetic pace throughout.
Was expecting more. Good though, liked other early Bowie better.
First half was great, got a little weird for me in the last half or quarter
Didn’t really care for this, got super repetitive at the ends of lots of songs, which made it sound over produced.
Enjoyable listen.
Remember having a crush on Shirley Manson back in the day. Only happy when it rains was pretty much my vibe for a while. Album was much better than I expected. Figured the hits would be good and not much else, but overall good
Nice to listen to. Seemed toward the end of the folk era and at the genres limit. ^ | Probably just me trying to sound smart. I’d listen again
She’s a good singer. This is way too long and not really sure of it’s impact overall. Got pretty old
Really liked how this one started. Felt like walking into a speakeasy back in the old days
