I have heard this album before but it has been awhile. Didn’t get around to relistening but I remember it being very pleasant. Just gonna give it four stars but will relisten eventually.
Enjoyed this a good deal. Not really familiar with this sound or really much from around this time but I found the instrumental playing and vocals from both leads to be pretty impressive. Especially enjoyed the female vocalist whenever she was at the forefront of the song. Some tracks were a bit scant and the writing was a bit rough to me but overall it was enjoyable.
Enjoyable overall but not super crazy about it. Enjoyed the colorful instrumentation and production but it didn’t really pull me in all that much. Really don’t see myself returning to these songs and certainly not the album overall. Found the vocals to be grating on some tracks too. Just not my thing atm
Probably the most I’ve enjoyed a Beatles album and I’ve listened to most of the highly praised ones. Not really sure what it was about this one specifically though. Maybe I was just in the right mood or something. Regardless, it was really just one lovely instrumentation and great vocal performance after another. The narratives from a songwriting perspective were also quite interesting on a lot of the tracks here too. I wasn’t super crazy about some of the more “rocky” moments but that’s just me. It was also a pretty draining listen which I suppose is to be expected given the length. Still, it was super consistent and enjoyable pretty much all the way through.
Went pretty hard overall. Loved the guitar playing on it. The album sounded really clear and that only enhanced how great the instrumentation was. Vocals were also great and engaging to listen to. A couple songs that didn’t quite hold my attention but overall, a great album.
Greatly enjoyed this one. I was actually planning on listening to this today anyways as I recently listened to and loved Siamese Dreams. Compared to that album, this one was much more diverse overall which is fairly impressive considering SD already covered a pretty wide range of moods. This album covers both moods and sounds. You have art rock, shoegaze, alt rock, and even a little metal stuff going on on this thing. The diversity is certainly a good thing, however, considering its massive length. The length is probably one thing I’m not crazy about with this thing. I throughly enjoyed the first album. Honestly, this might be the first double album I’ve heard where I’ve actually felt like either album can be listened on their own. I listened to both back to back but each one felt self contained enough to be great on its own but came together well too. Listening to them back to back does leave me wondering how I actually feel about the second album. I was enjoying it a bit less than the first but that might have just been because the fatigue was setting in. Idk I certainly am not a fan of more aggressive stuff unless I’m really in the mood so that could also be it. I will probably return to each album on its own at a later date both because I enjoyed them both so much and because I want to test the fatigued idea. Anyways, this was a great time. Just consistently great instrumentals and performances. Prefer SD at this point in time but this was really awesome.
Have heard it. Not relistening as I think it’s genuinely overrated and boring.
I have heard this album before. Listened to it earlier this year and have been meaning to relisten. My initial feelings remain pretty much the same. It’s extremely pleasant to listen to and sounds fantastic… but that’s about all I get out of it. No real emotional connection here for me. Nothing I’m really rushing back to because I liked it so much. But, again, it sounds fantastic and the instrumentation is really great. Love the improvisational moments especially. Definitely get why this album is praised, but there’s just not a ton here for me for whatever reason.
Pretty great album for sure. Strong combinations of folk, rock, blues, and even a bit of psychedelic music too. Instrumentation was lively and the vocal chemistry between each member was extremely strong too with several strong harmonies. Not sure if I’m really rushing back to the album as a whole at this point in time though. There’s not really a flaw I could name but idk it’s just not resonating a to with me atm. Time will tell on that front. Still great though.
I’ve listened to this album a couple times before but it’s probably been well over a year since I returned to it at all. This listen has confirmed to me that it’s at least very good if not great. Several really standout tracks here be that Coronado, Fountain Stairs, or Revival. Not really a big dud in the batch either although some of them can kind of ride out or get a bit repetitive. The psychedelic effects on the songs is what really makes them standout I’d say. Adds an entrancing element to the songs and makes them more than just cute little folky rock tunes. Overall, it’s a solid record. Not one that’s got me coming back still but I did enjoy it more than I remembered.
Didn’t enjoy this one a ton. Very melodramatic tone overall that never really pulled me in as much as it needed to. Vocals were way too over the top a lot of the time. A few tracks where the instrumentals did come together in an interesting way though. I could see why someone would enjoy this if they really got into the drama of each track, but it just wasn’t doing it for me. Not bad but not great either for me.
Feel pretty similar to this as I did Aja. It’s pleasant for sure and I can see the appeal but it just doesn’t do much for me. I really don’t know why that is but the fact remains that I’m fairly unmoved. Aja definitely left more of an impression on me overall though. The songs there were significantly more exciting imo. But yeah, I see the appeal but it’s just not for me I don’t think.
Not the strongest album I’ve ever heard but certainly a worthwhile listen if only to hear an album that inspired so many artists. It’s pretty neat to hear how much of this albums DNA can be seen in more modern hip hop acts even ones that aren’t from the west coast. Be that through direct samples of a few songs off this record or just he style and personality that Snoop Dogg displays throughout. It’s a super cool listen from that perspective. The album itself is still pretty good though imo. I think a couple songs do sort of feel like they lack progression and go round and round a bit but there are still some solid tracks for sure. The flow of the album was also really great. Just super seamless transitions from track to track which made the time go by quickly and helped tie everything together. It wasn’t necessarily a “journey” or anything like that but I thought the skits and whatnot did help bring the whole experience together. Wish they were separate from the songs themselves though. All in all, enjoyable record though.
Neat album for sure just to hear what music used to be like. The most interesting part of this album was definitely how short each song was. I feel like pretty much all of them had the legs to go at least one more verse but they just didn’t. I’m assuming that’s because songs back then just didn’t back then. It wasn’t the norm or anything. Other than that, Elvis really is a captivating vocalist. He adapts well to the energy do the song and his popularity is certainly understandable even almost 70 years later. Enjoyed the album overall. Songs were definitely a bit scant but they were all enjoyable for the most part.
Weird album for me. Definitely some tracks here that I found enjoyable like The Sad Skinhead or the apparently mislabeled Run, but other that will probably always keep me from returning to the album like the 11 minute event less opener. Just an album that never felt like it got into a groove for me. It would hit me with an enjoyable track or stretch of time but then just lose my attention. I guess I enjoyed it overall but I’ll probably forget I ever listened to it.
Not really a fan of this one at all. I found pretty much every single before the title track to be almost completely unremarkable. The left and right channel mixing made them almost a chore to listen to as, at some points, it truly felt like each instrument was playing independently and I just happened to be hearing them at the same time as opposed to them being played together as a part of the song. The title track did next to nothing for me too. Never grabbed my attention at all but that’s just me. Don’t really have a reason for it. So yeah not really getting this one at all. Comes off as unremarkable to me although I can see why the title track would be considered pretty important. Never despised it or anything but never really felt like I was listening to anything worthwhile either.
Very fun listen overall. I don't think the topics of the songs were necessarily cheery or anything but the instrumentation was quite colorful and fiery. Vocals were great and never wavered in passion either. I just thought this was a really enjoyable album overall and definitely wasn't something I would have listened to outside of this list.
