An OK album. I quite like the upbeat melodies and the guitar riffs but quite dislike the singer's voice. In my opinion, the album feels its age, meaning it has this overall dated feel and tone to it that just doesn't last well over the years. Overall, most songs were quite forgettable and I don't know if it merits a place on a "must listen before you die" list. I probably wouldn't listen to it again.
Great album! Great rhythm, catchy tunes, I can't help but dance and snap my fingers to it. All songs are instantly recognisable, and you know they hit it big when the tracks are still remixed decades later. The remastered version also adds production value making it an amazing listening experience. Would definitely play again!
Great album! Bob Marley really is a legend and what gets this album on 5 stars for me is that it's not just a pure reggae album - the band are playing around with funky and jazzy riffs here and there making it overall more interesting experience than just your typical reggae tunes.
How can I rate this down? :D It's impossible for me to be objective about it as it brings me back to my teenage years haha. It opens with American Idiot which is such an energy blast! The whole album has a great punchy, light punky vibe that I feel is a crowd pleaser in general, not just for me.
I still can't decide if this album is country or jazz or blues :D It's nice and mellow, soft and emotive. It's again another one for me where I like the soundtrack more than the vocals. I can't stop picturing what this album would be like with a different singer? It's a lower rating for me because of that. Someone with a deeper voice that isn't so focused on doing long shouted sillables would've probably hit better with the mellow melody and the jazzy bits of the song.
It is a hip hop classic, and the instrumentals and beats on some of these tracks are absolute genius. But I can't say that I can listen to this now the same way I was 20 years ago when growing up. It gets a bit exhausting all the swearing, but that's just how the genre is I suppose; although this one has quite a bit of mysogyny on it.
Decent album. A bit tired of generic rock though. Couldn't catch the lyrics all too clearly, so relied more on melody and vibes.
Epic album! What an opening as well with Enter Sandman! The heaviness of the drums and the guitar riff. 100% platinum headbang material. And the guitar solos... damn... flawless.
A very intriguing album. I don't think I've heard anything quite like it before. It's definitely more of a one-off, interesting piece, something to experience for its uniqueness, rather than songs I'd find myself actually puttin on. Overall, not for me.
Blast from the past. A decent quirky album. A couple of classics on there. Overall not bad at all.
All too played and all too familiar. Is it a great album - yes? Is it great enough that I can see it pop up on my listening list and not roll my eyes and sigh "this again" - no. It probably deserves a 5 but I'm just sick of it. And it's just not impactful enough that I can listen to it 100 times and not get sick of it. I'm probably getting a bit sick of all the same rock that this website is generating for me, plus, on my list this album followed Metallica. Now that's an album that takes it to the next level.
Fun album but punk is not my thing anymore. Take away the punk and there's not much that this album offers. It's a piece of history for the music scene at that time.
God I am sick of 70s music. I might abandon the website if this is just going to be an overview of the 70s. The vibe is OK but the lyrics are quite poorly written. The "modern lovers" ? more like the "pre-pubescent lovers". The whole album seems juvenile, like listening to a kid in primary school trying to articulate love and relationships. I'm going to stop it 8 songs in. Why tf does anyone "need" to listen to this album before they die?
What a shit album. I stopped 6 songs in. Why is this on the list instead of Licensed To Ill? I mean if you consider Beastie Boys to be "must listened to before you die" why chose Paul's Boutique? Licensed To Ill at least brought something to the scene, packing a punch with those gritty guitars against their crap rap style and genuinely has a couple of bangers on there like "Fight for your right" and "No sleep til Brooklyn". Paul's Boutique is just crap rap.
Great album. I love ZZ top and their gritty gasoline fuelled ruggedy rock. It's packed with energy and sounds good, even though the lyrics might not be much haha. All I can think of is blue jeans, hot rods, and the open road.
Definitely an interesting album. Not really my cup of tea but after all the tired music I've listened from this website at least these guys are doing something different and it's making me want to find out how the band has evolved since this album.
Quite forgettable
I didn't like this album so much. It's the band's very first and they've grown so much since then! It's a shame really that I have to downvote it, but for electronic music there have been so many advancements since the 90s I can't say it's any good. The band is fantastic though - 10/10. I'm starting to think this is a flaw with this book/list. The list was published in 2005, and it considers albums you "MUST LISTEN TO BEFORE YOU DIE" so they must have had the time to really hit the public. I'm afraid it sadly means it's mostly 70s/80s and dad rock :( anything outside that time/genre will probably suck.
Meh. Never really been a fan of the Beatles outside of a few songs. This album is nothing spectacular. Very mellow, kinda put me to sleep.
Quite enjoyed it.
Quite surprised to see uk garage making it onto the list :D Not a bad album, old school garage, I sometimes think today's garage should adopt more of the old school vibe too. Solid 3 for me
"What in the fuck am I listening to?!" is how this album review started. I thought it's just a choice of intro, to start off an edgy band/album or something. But, seriously, what the fuck is this shit? Is it music? Is it the last surviving piece of tape of a recording jumbled up by a trash compactor that you're trying to play through a rusty blender? wtf is it? I never heard of this band before, and from this album I have no clue wtf they're about. Do they even make music? Maybe they recycle old casettes and try to stitch them together to see what it'll sound like? They could be selling potatoes for all I know because listening to this album I have no idea what's going on. Granted a few of these have a bit more rhythm and melody besides just random noises. The 2nd half of the album was more tolerable than the first. It could be great for the soundtrack of a dystopian/apocalyptic drama/horror production. Fair play for getting included. One of the albums to listen to before you die just so that you can find out such a band or style even exists. I'd justify this being on it more than some shit rock band that's not produced anything noticeable on an overplayed genre. At least this pushes some boundaries, becomes trully unique, and defines a genre of its own, even if you only play it once in your whole lifetime.
Meh
Not really digging it
What's really funny is that I was listening to my previous generated album by the Kinks (also '69) and I jumped straight into this one and for a moment I swear I thought it's the same band. It's like this whole decade melded into one huge band. Everyone sounds the same. I thought I enjoyed 60s/70s rock. This website made me realise I don't. I'm quite done with those decades.
Not bad. Enjoyed quite a bit of it
Quite good actually. I might listen to more Steely Dan. Didn't know them before and I think this album was a great introduction. Solid 4 for me. Loved the more interesting timing on the melodies without to much weirdness or lame stuff.
I'm actually surprised how many Dusty songs I knew without knowing the artist is Dusty Springfield :D I'm glad I stumbled over her. I've listened to another album after this one. Sort of oldie but goldie. Wouldn't turn it down, although not sure how often I'd play it.
"A message to you Rudy" - I've heard this song so many times and I didn't know who it is, ha! Great start to an album. It went so and so from there on. I still didn't hate this album though :)
