Punishing Kiss
Ute LemperThis album sounded more like a soundtrack to a Broadway musical. He voice was smooth and strong but just couldn’t digest the actual songs themselves. Definitely not for me.

Song 2 is about the only song worth listening to here. The rest is just a Blur!
Definitely not my cup of Cream! Reminds me of a raw James Brown, but definitely not my taste. The songs just seemed to ramble on like they were just having a jam session without a real finish in mind. I can imagine they were having a good time while doing it. Music wasn’t terrible, just not my thing.
First listened to this on vinyl back in the 70s. My uncle had the album and we that the cover was so funny. Little did I know then that I was listening to pure genius at work. I knew who The Who was at that point and they became a regular on my radio. From Baba O’Reily to Won’t Get Fooled Again, mix in Bargain and Behind Blue Eyes, you have some of their best work here. This album stands the test pf time. Daltry’s strong lyrics, Townsend’s guitar and keyboards, Entwistle’s bass and keyboards, wrapped up with Moon’s drums make this album legendary! When you hear the starting keyboards on Baba, you know what’s coming next and know it’s going to be epic!
I know she was heralded as a pioneer for solo women, but definitely not my taste. She sounds like someone we’d see playing in a coffee house. Strong voice, but just too slow for me.
This is the album that really put Oasis on the map. Unfortunately, the so called “next Beatles” could never get along long enough to prove it! They definitely left their mark with this album with some amazing hits. Too bad they will only be remembered for their family feuds and not their musical talent.
I tried, I really tried, but I just can’t see the attraction. A quintessential folk album of lost love, anti-war and love found. Bob tells his tales, but nothing that keeps my interest. He was good for his time, I guess.
I had never heard of Janelle Monae before listening to this album. Not sure how this even made the list. It was a mishmash of a bit of everything and I could never get straight who she was as an artist. Felt like a compilation of songs she would have sang trying to win American Idol or something. Comparing her to Bowie or Prince is just absurd. I’m sure she hits a chord for someone, just not me.
Was this a joke? This seemed like some sort of musical theater versus a true album of something I really needed to hear before I die! I definitely could have done without ever hearing this album. Seemed like a wanna be Bob Dillon type with no talent. Every song sounded the same with just some random spoken lyrics.
Where it all started with ODB, Ghost Face Killa RZA, Method Man GZA and the rest of the clan. Very raw, but makes a statement. Not their best work, but some good old school hip hop. Sounded like they were having g a good time together while making it. Saw quite a bit of personality in all of the clips within the songs.
A little funk, a little soul, a little R&B, a little do-wap. This album was all over the place. The Temptations definitely led the way for those who followed. Not their best album, but a few gems here.
Bono’s lyrics, the Edge’s guitar riffs, Larry Mullen Jr’s drums and Adam Clayton’s smooth bass! What a stellar album. I believe they’re second best next to Joshua Tree. I remember the first time I played it, Zoo Station was such a move from their previous work, but hooked me immediately. One was just magical. Played it at my wedding! So many great tracks on this album. I can still remember the Zoo TV tour concert at Jack Murphy stadium in San Diego. The stage was so amazing. Like nothing I’d ever seen for a concert before. So cutting edge, just like the album at the time, yet still true to who they were. I’ve probably seen U2 more times than any other band, besides the Cure, and never tire of their amazing talent.
I’ve always loved the Kinks. Part of the 60s British Invasion. They have some great hits. Unfortunately, none on this album. I can see the timing of this album was during the Vietnam war, so the subject of several of the songs makes sense. Just didn’t strike a chord with me.
Some fun tracks here. Jack’s vocals and guitar are solid. Meg’s drums are simple at best, but do the job. A fun listen, but not their best.
Made we want to get up and dance, and I hate dancing. Sounds like they pioneered the Salsa genre. Not my vibe, but fun.
All I ask is why? Am I being punked? This isn’t music, just repetitive noise!
Other than Bodhisattava didn’t recognize a single song. Actually never knew what they were saying in that song until today! Album had a definite 70s vibe to it, but even as a youth of the 70s, I grew board pretty fast. I know that Steely Dan had many more hits through the years, they’re just not here.
Still not a Neil Young Fan. Finally started to rock a bit in the last few songs and it was over. His voice just doesn’t do it for me.
This is a band I have truly never heard of until now. Reminded me a bot of the Who. Enjoyed the listen, but not knowing any of the songs it was hard to connect. I’d probably listen again of it was being played somewhere.
First song was fun, went down hill from there. Never heard of this guy. Now I know why.
I really like Queen, but really hated this album. I just couldn’t connect with any of these songs. I know it was a transition time for them, but it seemed so disjointed. May’s guitar was great. Freddie’s voice was strong, just nothing seemed to go together. Hopefully we get some of their better work in the future.
Blues rock at its finest! Mark Knopfler’s guitar work is unmistakable. Always loved Sultans of swing, but never heard most of this album before now. Some great tunes here
I saw Ride touring with the Charlatans a few years ago and I think my ears are still ringing from it! Shoegaze definitely is something you either love or hate. I love the hard and raw vibe, but it can be a bit much after a while. Ride definitely brought the goods here. Some great tracks for a short lived genre.
This album was just a mess for me. It just couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. I know AD was innovative in early hip hop but it just seems like a lot of unnecessary noise now. It’s fun to go back for a listen, but it just didn’t hold up as to something I was happy to hear again. Tennessee will always be a radio favorite, but the rest I could leave behind.
This freshman effort launched Paige, Plant, Bonham and Jones into the stratosphere and they never looked back. The vocals, guitars and drums just flowed together like they had been doing it for years. So many iconic tunes from this album, only to be joined by so many more to follow on future albums. Zeppelin will always be the gold standard by which all other rock bands will be judged! Coming out of the gate this album rocks and just keeps on rolling!
A new artist to me but some fun tunes. Very 70s blues vibe for sure.
Old school country. Still not for me.
Grunge at its finest. This album lives up there with other epic releases from this era like Nirvana’s Nevermind and Pearl Jam’s Ten. So many massive hits like Cherub Rock, Today, Disarm and Mayonnaise, but the rest of the album is solid too. Forgot how much I used to love listening to this back in the day. It was such a refreshing change from all of the pop and glam rock that was all the rage at the time. This music moved me, spoke to me, made me feel alive! So blessed to have been part of this amazing era of rock music. The Pumpkin’s brought it and brought it hard!
Reminds me a bit of the Sex Pistols or the Clash. Not sure how I never heard them back in the 80s. An edgy UK punk vibe. I actually enjoyed it and would probably listen to it again.
This was torture to my ears. Sounded like some grandma got herself a guitar and a tape recorder and decided to make an album. How this makes this list is beyond me. I definitely could have gone my whole life never hearing this and it would have been fine, but now I have and it still sucked!
Big hair rock at its finest. Some epic rock ballads that you can’t help but sing along with like Wanted Dead Or Alive (used both in Young Guns Soundtrack and Deadliest Catch opening theme song) and Living On A Prayer(who hasn’t belted out “ohhh we’re half way there…”), both mammoth hits; along with the second track- You Give Love A Bad Name, another massive hit. The rest was just okay filler for me, but still fun to think about having those big long locks of hair and banging your head to the beat.
Coming off the success of Creep and being a potential one-hit wonder, this album reinvented Radiohead (for the first time) and launched them into the stratosphere as legitimate stars! There is a reason why I’ve listened to this album so many times and it is still in my rotation to this day. It never gets old. Timeless alternative rock at its finest. So many great tracks, and not just the ones with radio time. It is so deep and powerful, but not over pretentious. A true 5 star album!
This album came out the year I was born, but a few of the songs still stand the test of time. Mother’s Little Helper and Under My Thumb are both great songs, probably the best on the album. The rest are okay, but just couldn’t hold my attention like the others. The a Stones have a huge catalog of hits, a few here, but this wasn’t their best work.
I tried, but it really just sounded like random noises from around the house, repeating over and over. It was pure torture to make it through this album.
Another new band to me. Reminded me a bit of David Byrne and Talking Heads back in the day or Franz Ferdinand today. Didn’t hate it, but it didn’t really WOW me. No big standout songs. Just a fun listen.
Brings me back to my youth. Such an epic 80s album. I listened to this more times than I can count. Shout was an anthem of my youth! Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Head Over Heels were stellar as well. Roland and Curt just put it all together and made some incredible music.
The fact that there was a Scott 1, 2 & 3 before this album is baffling! Definitely could have done without hearing this in my lifetime.
Classic Indie band. Nothing outstanding or overly offensive. Just middle of the road. Didn’t hate it, but it’s nothing I’d be excited about diving into deeper. Felt very experimental a few too many odd beats or distorted vocals for me.
CCR is just classic Southern Rock. Fogerty’s scrachy voice is unmistakable. Green River, Bad Moon Risimg and Lodi are timeless classics. The rest of the album is like a smooth southern whiskey. Just goes down easy! Great album from an Hall of Fame band.
The 80s was such a great time to be alive and into music. Duran Duran were the perfect synthpop foursome. Roger Taylor’s drums were epic, Nick Rhodes keyboards were the glue that held it all together and made it unique, Simon Le Bon’s vocals were strong and he was the perfect frontman, Andy Taylor’s guitar and John Taylor’s bass were so complimentary to the rest of the band. So many great hits, Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, Save a Prayer, made famous by MTV (remember when they actually played music videos), but the rest of the album is great too. I had this album on vinyl and wore it out, got it on cassette and wore it out too. Knew all of the songs by heart. Still do! Maybe it’s just nostalgia or maybe it is still great, either way It will always be a favorite for me. And who didn’t love the incredible cover art from Patrick Nagel. His sharp edges and use of color to highlight a beautiful woman was second to none!
This album sounded more like a soundtrack to a Broadway musical. He voice was smooth and strong but just couldn’t digest the actual songs themselves. Definitely not for me.
These are the roots of modern rock n roll. Little Richard broke the rules and never looked back. The songs weren’t sophisticated, but many are memorable and carry forward to this day. Although I’m not a huge fan, I can’t deny his influence.
So good ole punk rock! I actually enjoyed this and loved the hard edge guitar and drums. Vocals were good, but not great, but didn’t detract enough to give a lower rating.
Stir it up is a classic. Other than that, I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of these tunes. Not his best work, but still smooth and soulful.
Great album of early grunge Forgot how good they were. Need to go back and have another listen.
Classic Who. This foursome was the best of The Who. Brilliant recording of so many early hits here. Saw them live in the late 80s and they were still great, but had definitely lost a bit by then. Glad I actually saw them live though. Daltry and Townsend will always be legends, but Entwisle’s keyboards and Moon’s drum were just as amazing.
Why?? This was beyond awful!! At no point in their rambling, incoherent music were they even close to anything that could be considered a rational song. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it!! If I could have awarded no points, I would have.
Old school hip hop. Some good rhymes, but vocals weren’t the strongest. Drum track sounded like the same one was used on about every song. Was ok to listen to in the background, but nothing that blew me away.
Have never been a huge Hendrix fan, but there is no denying his talent and influence on rock n roll. Jiminknew how to play guitar and was far ahead of his time. Too bad he died so young before we were ever able to see the depths of his talent. Some great hits on this album that I enjoyed hearing again.
The height of 80s hair bands and pop metal! 7 singles, a chart topping album, all with a one armed drummer. Listening to this brings me back to those days. I listened to a lot of Def Leppard back in the 80s, and it’s still nostalgic, but not as great as I remembered. Still fun to rock out to a bit here and there, but definitely not something I seek out for my old school rotation.
Some fun lovin hip hop! FLC is that great band you’ve never heard of. It was fun reconnecting with this album. Definitely have to listen to them more often. Scooby Snacks is always a fun tune, but so many more great tracks here.
Ironic that this shows up in the rotation on the day of Brian Wilson’s death. RIP. They perfected the surf genre. A few fun hits, but definitely not their best. There’s definitely better from them out there.
Another day of tribute to Brian Wilson. RIP. Some iconic classic s on this one: Wouldn’t it be nice, Sloop John B and Fox only knows. Still not their best work, but a fun listen.
Definitely not my vibe. Sounded like something I’d hear in a dance class
Take on me was one of my favorite 80s songs and definitely a favorite video on MTV. A few other fun follow up hits, but the rest of the album isn’t as memorable. Overall, not terrible, but definitely don’t want the top song on the album to be the first one. Hard for the rest to live up to.
Chuck D’s rhymes were solid and Flavor Flav provided the hype, but the album just didn’t hold up for me. The backing tracks just got repetitive and boring after the first few tracks and the rapping just couldn’t over power it. It was an icon in its time, but has lost its edge over time.
Just 4 rambling jazz songs that really seemed to have no point. Not sure why this is so important for us to hear. Definitely don’t ever need to hear it again.
Good old school 70s rock. The only flautist I’ve ever heard in rock n roll.
While I’m a fan of New Order, this was not my favorite album. I’ve listened to the Substance album more times than I can count, but this may be just the second or third time I’ve ever listened to this one. Not terrible, but nothing that I was really moved by.
I learned something over the past few weeks. I really don’t like jazz. This album didn’t change that opinion. This was a struggle to even get through. Masekela may be a master of his art, but not for me.
Amazing drums and percussion, raw guitar and bass, mixed with tribal style vocals Soma y great tracks here. Loved this in the 80# and still love it now.
I recognized one song here, Twisting the nigh away. This was a classic, just not my vibe.
Ironically, I’m an R.E.M. fan but have never really listened to this album. Knew Radio Free Europe and still love that tune, but enjoyed the rest of the album too. No real standouts for me, but worthy of a play while I work.
Incredibly boring and uninspiring! Write a line, repeat it 100 times, next song do the same. Boring!!
Very old timey country. If Sinatra had a cowboy hat and a twangy guitar, this could be it. Nice vocals, but just couldn’t get into it. Still not a country music fan!
Definitely not her best work.
Where the really made their mark. Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day, Two Hearts Beat As One, all epic. Then close it out with 40 as they’ve done at so many concerts over the years, what an album!!
Radiohead wanna be. Too Whitney for me though.
It’s like early Nine Inch Nails but really raw. A bit edgy but a bit too eccentric.
The original anarchists! Old skul punk rock! Every song is a gem! Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten were legendary! God Save the Queen….
Ambient Works is exactly what this was. It felt like something from a hip spa. I didn’t hate it and it was actually pretty chill.
Nothing life shattering here. Just some ordinary rap album. Didn’t recognize a single track.
The album where Ministry reinvented themselves. I have this in my collection and it still rocks. If you want something you can put on and just rock out to at a very loud volume, this is your album!
A classic
Some funky beats!
