Not for me. I’ve never liked 80s instrument effects and production. I find it very cheesy and gimmicky. This album is very cheesy and gimmicky. Which I guess 80s was the beginning of the digital era so it’s all new sounds but there’s a successful, timeless way to do it, this album is absolutely not it. I will not ever listen to this album again to be completely honest.
Compositionally, I didn’t find this album interesting, it also didn’t feel serious or genuine? Also, what’s with the off-key squelchy vocals?
1/5
3.5/5
Nice, solid British rock album. One iconic song in here. You definitely hear influences from the Beatles / Led Zeppelin / Rolling Stones / Cream and many other related groups for the late 60s 70s. Solid era for music imo, I grew up listening to this type of stuff lots so I may be biased.
The first bit of disc 1 which I assume was side A of the record, flowed together nicely. You can tell this was made during an era when people listened to albums not just disjointed singles.
The backup vocals oscillating going “Ah ah ah ah” in Christmas is pretty fuckin rad.
Some lyrics in We’re Not Gonna Take It were a bit gross, didn’t age well.
Overall enjoyed listening to this album as background music, not sure I’d go back to any song tbh, maybe the pinball wizard one cause the hook goes hard and it’s kinda funny. The Who and this genre has a lot of influence in my music making.
Yeah it’s pretty good. Idk if I’m a huge fan of the vocal style, very hard syllables and such. Musically not too bad either. Some of it felts a bit repetitive. I feel like this set the stage for punk music.
I feel like there are some songs by the clash that I really enjoy, some I just kinda find whatever. This album felt like whatever to me hahah. Nothing stood out really, neither good nor bad.
The Guns of Brixton sounds like a Gorillaz song, pretty sick.
And all of a sudden a ska song?? Wrong em boyo is so dif than the songs before it. Aight ok some reggae later on in the album. I guess it is 70 minutes of music it can’t all be the same rock songs throughout the whole album. So I’ll ask, why tf is this album so damn long?
Hell yeah this album huge for hip hop. This was definitely more than just music, a statement on police brutality, racism, perceptions, etc.
Instrumentals have hints of late 80s sprinkled in but since they’re mostly samples, it’s just good sounds from the 60s-70s. Simple drum beats. Classic hip hop.
There’s some huge names in rap on this album. Definitely wild to see the evolution from this to newer music they’ve made.
Some of these songs are so good, straight outta Compton, gangsta gangsta, fuck the police, express yourself, I ain’t tha 1. Some are pretty mid but whatever.
Prob should’ve listened on vinyl or headphones instead of my little bluetooth but whatever. This is more about the message than the hi fi.
Oh this is vibey right off the bat. Super dreamy first song.
Guitar effects are pretty neat for the first three songs. I find the drum tone a bit too reverb, feels like bad 80s drums. Compositionally these songs are so different than what I typically hear.
The first song I like, it was interesting and balanced, kicked off the album well. The others have been pretty bleh. As much as I’ve never been someone to deeply and consciously listen to lyrics, for some reason my brain turns that off, I usually just listen to vocal melody and cadence. I didn’t like these vocals. This doesn’t sound like it’s in English but just looked up lyrics, it is. I just realized it’s a heavy Scottish accent, it becomes more clear as the album goes on. The vocal delivery and performance feel disjointed from the music to me.
Songs 4 and 5 6, I thought for a moment oh maybe this will be good from the music intro but then the chord changes ruin it for me. I just really don’t care for it. And the vocal melodies overtop, nah, not it. I Wear Your Ring was foul lol. The harmonics in Road, River and Rail were not working for me. Seems like there’s key changes in Frou-frou song, and the instruments seem to lag with catching up to the vocals, when they finally do it’s not a bad outro.
Overall, it feels very 90s. First song was pretty cool, I can imagine popping that cd into a system and listening back in the 90s, but the rest of the album sharply went downhill for me. Went back to listen to the first song, cherry coloured funk, and it still stands as the best song on the album to me, still not something I’ll be adding to my playlists. To have honest I wish I could have just stopped there, listening to the rest of the album skewed how I hear that first song for sure.
2.5/5 as an album but the first song gets a 3.5
Why r these so long songs.
Glad sounds like a movie soundtrack and very much gospel music. I actually really enjoy this track.
Freedom Rider was pretty vibey. Weird sax take at one point in the song, you’d think they’d try for a better take, like it audibly sounded like a fuck up or missed notes lol. But whatever.
John Barleycorn sounds like a wannabe Led Zeppelin song so bad, down to the flute. This came out after Led Zeppelin as well, but this sounds specifically like stairway which came out after. Hmmm. The rest of the album was pretty tight and doing its own funky soul thing till this song came on. Feels like the first two songs on the album are a different artist.
Overall, not a bad listen but nothing special blowing my mind.
3.5/5
Im about to go off again, sorry yall.
A group of my Saskatoon friends love Pavement… for some reason.
90s punk I guess. Sounds like me on the drums back there. Although, I feel like I have better fills and beats to throw in at least though, idk maybe I’m over confident but it’s pretty lacking.
I’ve never understood the appeal of this type of punk and bands like this and Pup. It’s like noisemaking which I guess I do enjoy some aspects, the complete lack of not giving a single fuck is kinda satisfying. But idk the rest of it just feels like they gave a few fucks, but not enough to be actually good, and not little enough for it to carry that not giving a fuck vibe. Meh.
The drums continue to suck as I listen. They also are pretty poorly recorded/tuned. This is what happens when your music is meant to be listened to live and just absolutely blowing out people’s eardrums so you don’t actually notice that the tone sounds like ass. Kinda disappointing production.
Fame Throwa I had a physical reaction when the vocals came in with a “more of this shit huh” but the heavy drop was kinda cool.

Okay.
Skip.
No thanks.
Aight
Ba ba ba ba baaaaa. Guys this is hardcore.
Tbh I didn’t care to finish this album.
The drumming in this album compared to the last is insane. Whoever’s drumming is pretty cracked.
I really enjoyed this album. Some of the lyrics and whisk Muse vibe is a nooooo cringey but it didn’t ruin it for me. Overall the music is pretty neat, heavier than I usually listen to.
Hell yeah I fucking love this. So warm, that trumpet tone chefs kiss.
Feels like Christmas music too.
Vocals, of course, fucking on point. Jazz band on point. Music composition on point. We don’t write music like this anymore…
Sooooo many incredible songs on this album. Not even just like, good songs but songs that have become household songs that I feel like everyone in at least North America knows or has heard.
Definitely some very traditional gender role lyrics in here. Sucky, but unfortunately that was the time… “You’re only a maid, and I am only a man”, what.
Crazy how a few of these songs are so fucking good and so popular, and the rest are so fucking mid. As an album, not the best. But the couple singles on here slap.
2.5
I’m annoyed. The website didn’t save my write up from yesterday. Anyways some really good songs on here. Overall not bad. Some don’t sound like Aerosmith which is funny.
3.5
Is this what you call prog rock?
Ew. But also some of it is fucking sick?
Def some jazz influences in there that was cool.
This kept me in the edge of being fucking irritated for having to listen to it. But then some little like relief or something cool would come in and I’d be like okaaay I guess it’s not that bad. But overall I didn’t care for it. Idk if I even finished the album tbh.
2.7
Why’s this first song so damnnn quiet. Reminds me of the intro to my album that drives me fucking insane lol.
Driving around in my CAR
This album got me feelin like a STAR
3.5?
Maybe I’m in a good mood but I actually didn’t mind this. Usually this shit kinda sucks to me but it scratched an itch for me. Interesting late 80s punk.
Total Trash starts playing completely foul notes like 3 mins in but I fucking love it? Wtf
I think I need to be in the right mood to listen to this. Or it put me in that mood. …Which is anxious. But I actually fuck with this a bit.
Pre listen thoughts: OH HELL YEAAAAH. I was sent The Ocean years ago and have been in love with that song. I think I’ve listened to this full album before, we shall see.
That slide guitar mmmmmph. Folky, twang in all the right ways. Classic soul vocals, surfy, orchestral, deliciousness. All of the instrument tones are so fucking juicy and mixed so nicely. And the song compositions are fantastic and nice to listen to.
Definitely atmospheric as well. This music is bringing me to another world. Really enjoy listening to this. Actually listening through for a second time. Yeah I fucking love this. Dreamy. Makes me happy.
