1001 Albums Summary

Surprised how modern this album sounded! Incredible bass tones and really locked in performance by the whole band. It's funny his name is Elvis bc he sounds a little like Elvis. Clearly an influence on [[The New Pornographers]] and other indie hybrid synth/rockers. I'd give this album a 4 but I felt the underlying gender tension was uncomfortable. It seems there's been a lot of discussion about whether this album is misogynistic or at least adversarial towards women or whether he's simply assuming that persona/viewpoint as a chacter sketch (supported by the album cover). Either way it's something that might make me less likely to revisit what was otherwise a great album.

What I thought was many different blandly overproduced and homogenized musicians playing in the dance clubs of the 2010's was in fact mostly Adele, it would seem. I was surprised by how much I disliked something so polished

I really enjoyed this album, but it ran a little long and I felt like there was a lot of filler they probably could have edited out.

Enjoyed this quirky Teutonic robo adventure. Probably another album that sounds a little small by virtue of how much it influenced those that followed...

Hard to know how to rate a kind of same-y album of a genre you don't love that also features one of the best songs ever written ...

I liked this album a lot and am sad I missed the fun at the time. 40-50% too long tho

They are definitely technically and musically skilled and I appreciate the details and thought put onto each song. Props to them for drawing attention to the genocide of native Americans, although the song might come off to some as simply glorifying violence. But in the end not for me right now

I appreciate the overall premise but I didn't connect strongly with this on the first listen. I confess I listened to it only in my car which doesn't hlave the greatest bass fidelity

Better than expected. This is actually a "double" album, with the A and B sides being recorded in different years by almost totally different groups and which I would rate 5.5/3.5, averaging to 4.5, rounding up to 5 Pros: - def 95th percentile deepest lyrics I have heard in a punk or really any song ("Control") - this is the fastest that it is possible for music to go? - it is a beautiful punk/metal Rorschach test, with punk rockers splitting to A and metal heads B. I was amazed by how different the two sides feel with relatively minor differences (e.g., the evil demon voice on B, which turned me off some of those tracks)

I am so unsure how to rate this album, which is reportedly considered one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made? But as long as it gets in over under my thumb I think we'll be ok Also lol re: having two zeppelin samples in the first 3 tracks 😂

Ok, finally rating this album after lengthy procrastination... I would give Miles a 5 for what he plays but I feel like the other soloists miss the mark enough to deny this album 5ness overall :*(

I didn't really connect with this

This was a pretty challenging listen, even with multiple (multiple!) revisits. There were some moments of cool effect (in red riding hood I think) but it still kind of felt a little half-baked to me. The book does not successfully justify this album's inclusion imo

I like the instrumentation etc but it didn't really grab me in any way on the first listen. I might be wrong!

Although I didn't have time to see if I'd warm up to the more obtuse sides of this record, it was really inventive and interesting! Honestly debated a 4 and would have preferred a 3.5 but there you have it

His singing style on this album is pretty hard to get into but even on first listen it's clear some songs (e.g., Loom of the Earth) are really good. Maybe it would grow on you.

Face-melting

It surprised me that this is a big Bowie album! I liked the title track and the long ambient part of the album but haven't yet clicked with the rest

This album had a few songs I liked but wasn't something I'd really seek out on the balance

Dig it. Cool to hear this type of music in superlongform version. Would like to better understand the historical context of this album.

Interesting and enjoyable, but probably requires at least a few listens to not feel kind of all over the place. But might be worth a return!

This is a really nice album for putting on and listening to!

Don't waste your time listening to the bad anglicized versions, skip to the French half of the album which is way better

I was really expecting to come back and like this album and acknowledge that I was wrong and it is in fact a classic but actually no, I still don't like Brittany Spears

Starting out could have been a 4 for me but dipped somewhat. @Jono - you might have noticed this is not actually an Elis Regina album. Seems like it was an obscure compilation album erroneously included by the author/editor of the book

I enjoyed the album but let's be real, even I don't think anybody wants to listen to a bass solo on every single track

I liked this less than I wanted to overall, but lots to like nonetheless.

This album was hard for me to rank after only a listen or two. Although I'm not in a position to assess a rap album from a critical perspective I know Kanye's production is often very unique and original. Maybe with time I would have rated this much higher, but 3 is where I am at the moment.

I had a little trouble rating this one, as I preferred the end to the beginning. But on the balance, I suppose it is a 4!

This album is more significant historically than it is mind-blowing to listen to today imo. Mitch Mitchell, the drummer, dazzles me more than Jimi does.
