Rose Mountain

New Brunswick, New Jersey's finest. Maria Paternoster is a fucking demon on the guitar, all sick licks with just that right amount of overdrive. I hesitate because, on a personal note, I'm not sure this is something you "need" to hear. It's great, but it's a hard rock record with some seriously powerful vocals. But fuck it, this list is just a bonus list, and gotta give the hometown people their flowers. Someone throw some Gaslight Anthem or Thursday on this list, please. Favorite tracks: "Ripe", "Rose Mountain", "Criminal Image"

At this point I’ve accepted that I’ll enjoy basically every female punk rock album that I get on this list. Listening to this was a nice hit of crack for me.

Female singer with a great voice. Nice compact and (mostly) uptempo indie rock/post-punk songs with hooks and grungy guitar sound.

If a girl rocks really hard it’s an instant 4+ stars from me. I don’t make the rules.

This was awesome. Never heard of them, but kinda stoner rock, big fuzz Sabbath vibes. Big 90s grunge influence too. Basically a bunch of things I like. Catchy. 4/5.

Good add from one of the best DIY garage bands out there. More a fan of 2012’s ‘Ugly,’ but this LP is packed with highlights from the Screaming Females lengthy discography and some of their poppier, more accessible efforts. Always wild how this trio seems to produce the musical output of 5-6 people on every track. Marissa Paternoster’s strong vocals and insane guitar skills take the forefront, but the rhythm section is rock solid (especially the stable but frenzied drumming). It’s just solid garage rock at the end of the day, something that I feel has been dying out for a while. Case in point, these guys threw in the towel last year after 20 years of touring, recording, and publishing without a single manager or label. Saw them twice and each time was electric, they were one of the best touring rock bands out there and the scene just doesn’t feel the same without them!

I was curious, would this actually be females screaming? Not really, I would say it's more of one female singing with a pretty good voice. Overall I think this is pretty good, though nothing really stands out to me. 3 stars.

This was great, full of energetic rockers that don't stick around past their welcome. I wasn't sure about that vocal at first, but it grew on me. Fave Songs: Wishing Well, Rip, Rose Mountain, Empty Head, Burning Car

I listened a lot to bands this group toured with back in my college days so it's certainly adjacent to my tastes. I thought it was all right but the uniformly dour tone kind of dragged it down.

This had plenty of females and the right amount of screaming (minimal). This was a pretty enjoyable album of female indie rock with a little bit of punk flavor added on. Overall it’s a good album that has trendy styles and makes it a nice modern record. Not sure how much I’d revisit it but the quality is solid for a listen or two. 6.0/10

I was quite enjoying their music, but as the tracks progressed, I lost it. Suddenly it seemed intelligible to me, the pace accelerated unnecessarily, the vocalist takes her music in a continuous revolution and in my opinion persuades her musicians to do the same. The few songs that have a more relaxed rhythm work much better. They have good musicians, but overall I didn't really like it. 2.5 stars

Tight 35 minutes of fuzzy rock and roll. Saved to my library which is an auto 5 stars

I enjoyed this. But I don't think this is unique or special enough to really be on this list (which I don't factor in my score.) I think my favorite track is Triumph, which is interesting because it's not one of the higher played tracks.
