Dr. John
1/5
I had to google the author of 1001 to establish his age. There is a disproportionate amount of content from '67 '68 '69. I was wondering if he was 18 around then. Some of it was a golden age but this type of album does not compare with other eras. Maybe it was the drugs.

One listen sufficient. There is a reason this didn't get released widely in 1985. Not shocking, but not good.

Sufjan Stevens
5/5
Never heard of this artist before. I knew the song Chicago but not who sung it.
This is an excellent album and one I will return to and recommend to others.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
2/5
When it is good, it is excellent but too many weaker tracks take away from the album. If this had been on vinyl they would have to have edited down to 10 or 11 tracks. This would improve it a lot.
Paul Weller
2/5
Nothing poor but nothing stand out. It felt like background music after a while. Dont feel I will be rushing back.
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
When I saw this popping up today my 1st reaction was really? Growing up in the 80s, Come On Eileen was a ubiquitous anthem of every disco. However I enjoyed this a lot. Just not sure of its classic status.
The Roots
1/5
Experimental and incoherent. Tried this a few times but very little memorable or remarkable.
5/5
Classic album that arguably changed the music world forever. It is an album that you can revisit again and again. .
It is brilliant but not their greatest for me. Musically i think many songs lack the sophistication of other albums: Rubber Soul, White Album, abbey Rd, Revolver.
Still head and shoulders above the majority of this list and features one of my all time favourites: A Day in The Life
Steely Dan
3/5
3.4/5 so I will give it the 3
Easy listening no one offended. 70s soft rock or AOR. "reeling in the years" and "do it again" the highlights
Glad I heard it but just don't feel after this solid days listening that I will return to it or seek out more Steely Dan. Can't empathise with anything in the lyrics.
The cover is an abomination. 1/5
The Stooges
1/5
Interesting one. It sounds like a few guys who have just heard velvet underground, and are bluffing their way to record an album. It doesn't match VU or Doors by a long way.
We will fall: What were they thinking. pretentious gobbledeygook. John Cale influence and as one reviewer called it - padding.
Lyrically these fellows didnt stretch themselves!!! Listening to some of their other stuff I'm not sure they had the ability.
However all said, it is ahead of it's time and inspired alot of music I love. Great idea but very weak in parts.
Cover art: generic atyle photo but it expresses some tension. Like the band logo. 2/5
The Temptations
1/5
Pants. Flared pants. Who chooses these. Not impressed with the definition of classic.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Was looking forward to Bob Marley but I was expecting an album with more of his hits.
On repeated listens it has kept growing on me. Good reggae vibe.
Cover art 3.2/5
Eagles
4/5
Classic. Really enjoyed the exploration of the theme of the destruction of paradise, loss of innocence etc. Much more urban than their earlier cowboy themes. Gets better with every listen.
Cover art: 4.5/5 iconic cover picking up on musical themes.
Def Leppard
3/5
It has dated quite a bit. It is too long at over 60 mins and they were stretching it to release 7 singles.
I smiled when I didnt see the lyrics on spotify; they must not have thought them worthy of posting them. 😂 they are pretty corny and the snippets of Reagan and Thatcher date this album.
However it bears some re-listening.
Cover art 2/5
Metallica
2/5
Curious about this one. But ultimately it disappoints. it aspires to be epic but apart from a few singles it is quite forgettable.
I listened a few times but inevitably it became background to whatever I was doing.

Torture. Painful listening
Cover art: my favourite in a week 4/5
Led Zeppelin

Class. Everything a classic album should be.

Love Dylan. But a live album is a bit if a fraud. Like having a greatest hits on the list.
Cover art 1/5
Radiohead
5/5
What an album. Radiohead produce music that is like no one else. It is contemporary and challenging. They push every boundary. But ultimately rewards repeated listening.
Cover art 5/5
The Undertones
4/5
Unexpected but enjoyable. Raw, fresh, naive, 50s pop combined with new wave. Sound like a bunch of lads who have just got their instruments and having a blast. Simple direct songs. No over production going on here.
Cover art 1/5
Abdullah Ibrahim
1/5
Not sure how this achieved Classic status. It is entirely forgettable. I was hoping for the south African jazz equivalent of Graceland. But there is not a whisper of Africa to my ears.
Cover art 2/5 nice colours
Beach House
2/5
I had never heard of them and I always welcome a new discovery with the promise of a back catalogue to explore.
However so far they make all of the right sounds but I'm yet to be engaged. The reviewers who reference a shoegazing musical style must come from California. This is much more cheerful version of life.

Pants. Flared pants.
I think I possess 1001 better albums which are not on this list. It should have been consigned to the archives a long time ago.
Cover art 1/5
The Offspring
1/5
Sounds and riffs are good at times. But it doesn't engage me. I am probably not the demographic they were thinking of. To my ears it feels vacuous and staged emotion. it has no relation to punk for me.
Cover art 2/5 corny
Aretha Franklin
2/5
Doves
5/5
Classic album. excellent guitar led rock. Pounding on of my top 10 songs.
Cover art 3/5
Otis Redding
3/5
A (largely) covers album makes it feel closer to a greatest hits, is this cheating when compared to most of this list.
That said Otis makes many of these tunes his own. The power of his voice and interpretation is excellent. I think the inclusion of Satisfaction was a mistake.
Cover art 1/5
Everything But The Girl
2/5
Bought this back in the day. I had to, I needed the cash and had to break a record voucher so i found this in a bargain bucket. I resented it ever since and gave the tape away.
1 song album for me. It is non contentious easy-going music that doesn't grab me musically or emotionally in any way. Not a patch on a contemporaneous album and genre such as Steve McQueen by Prefab Sprout.
Cover art: 2/5
The Kinks
2/5
The Kinks are a great band with unique hits full of character and lyrical talent. I expected to discover more here. The recording sounds dated. It has a few stand out tracks but that is it.
Cover art: 2.5/5 odd one this. Psychedelic Victorian. At least they made some effort.
Dr. John

Sarah Vaughan

It's fine. The lady can sing but are there not 101 of these albums? What makes this special enough to be on the list?
Cover art 3/5
Steely Dan
1/5
This one is making 1001 feel really long. Not sure I get the entitlement of bands like this to have multiple entries on the list.
Released in 1977 I'd suggest this helped inspire punk.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Didn't know what to expect. Coherent album well produced with excellent vocals.
Cover art 1/5. Took them about 30 mins to do
Fela Kuti
2/5
Not his best record and a little bit long for me. African rhythms plus jazz are a good combination.
Cover art: 4/5
Paul Simon
3/5
Introspective and sometimes melancholy Paul Simon. It's fine but not his best by a long way. For me the better versions of some of the tracks are on the bonus edition and not on the original release. Simon articulates his lyrics beautifully, other artists could learn from his clarity.
Cover art 3/5
The National
4/5
Solid 4. Can't be a 5 because I can't figure out what he is singing about on any track. Bloodbuzz is a classic and the highlight of the album.
Cover art (original cover) 5/5 you can always rely on 4ad
The Incredible String Band
1/5
0/5 Ahh now. Up there with the worst.
Whoever put this on the list needs to get out more. This kind of rubbish undermines the entire list. It doesn't even deserve a 1.
Folk is far from my favourite genre, but this would not rank in any list of important folk albums.
"I cant dream well because of my horns."
Cover art 1/5 hippy commune family photo
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
1/5
Niche blues album playing blues standards. Not one in my "before I die category. "
Cover art 1/5 5mins effort. Redeemed slightly by the choice of the beano by Clapton
FKA twigs
1/5
Pretentious nonsense squeaking
Cover art: 3/5
Death In Vegas
4/5
Saw DIV live back in the day. A musician friend had to leave, he was worried about permanently damaging his hearing. it was a great gig. Couldn't believe how many people were on stage.
The idea of a guest vocalist was pretty original when it was released. Nowadays every other tune seems to be doing some type of collaboration. These were not driven by marketing and sales but by finding the voice/character/mood to match the song.
Iggy pop absolutely nails Aisha. On the next album Paul Weller and Liam Gallagher create works they never would have on their own and equal to their best.
Cover art 3.5/5
Arctic Monkeys
5/5
Absolutely refreshing take on all music that had preceded it. Poppy, punk, indie, catchy and danceable all at once. Some of the most arresting songs of the decade. All on a debut album.
Cover art 3/5. Striking in its own way and explains the attitude on the album
Mike Oldfield
4/5
Certain parts remind me of Sufjan Stevens, mmmm , I wonder how that works. Maybe it is the other way around, separated by 40 years. Ahead of it's time is clearly an understatement.
The lyric 'vocals' on side 2 undermine it a little for me.
Cover art: 5/5 iconic
Suicide
1/5
Reckon it is on here because it pursues an idea ahead of it's time. But it is doesn't compare to other electronics or what is about to emerge with Joy Division.
It is the shortest album I have reviewed at 32 mins and this is already 7 mins too long with the shocking track that is Frankie.
Lyrics exceptionally weak all round.
Cover art 4/5
The Velvet Underground

Iggy Pop
2/5
Mediocre album made possible by Bowie who is responsible for most of the good bits.
Mekons

One listen sufficient. There is a reason this didn't get released widely in 1985. Not shocking, but not good.
Stereolab

Maybe I'm mixing up this list with a classic albums list. This might be 1 to listen to once.
Cover art 1/5
The Cars
4/5
Whopping debut album. Knew most of the tracks but never realised it was from 1978!!! I would have guessed '82 or '83.
Cover art 5/5
The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
A few excellent tracks but a bit long. It would be a 4 if I thought I would go back to it more.
Cover art: 3/5
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
Excellent. I'd never heard this album. I had figured it was gonna be from the 80s but really impressed that it was 76-78. It absolutely captures the migration from acoustic to guitar based rock.

Classic. As an Irish person it is impossible to vote this down. Slows a bit in the middle. According to the stats go...1 in 4 houses had a copy of the album. Although I think I had 2 😂

Very eclectic and respect to a concept album. it is too long. Yet another from the digital era which would have benefited from a vinyl mindset. When it's good its excellent.

Fells like they invented a nee genre with this album. If it has a weakness it is that is lacks an emotional theme that resonates with me. Red squirrels etc.

Jimi Hendrix
3/5
Best three piece in the world possibly. BUT not the greatest songwriter by a country mile. Jimi should have just covered songs for his short life. These just don’t stand the test of time lyrically. As instrumentals they are brilliant.
Cover art : Jimi asked for the original cover to be changed to this for US release. Don’t love it but it captures the era and movement and probably the state of his mind at times.

Album 3 by Pixies and they are still crunching out fresh whopper tunes as tho it’s their 1st album. There are many references to a best debut category. If there was a best first 3 albums band it could only be Pixies.

Back to psychedelic rock. When it’s not us new wave from 1979 NY, it’s the summer of love. Someone on Spotify is wondering when they will ever get to archive this stuff, if 1001 keep make people listen to it.
Would drugs even help?

It starts and ends excellently. Admittedly had been worried. 2 Brian Eno produced records in a row doesn’t seem like the 1000 best albums. however by song two it descended into farce. It’s an ep at best. Did no one have an editor back then.

First thoughts: Boom 5* Out and out thumper of a record. This is what I expected to find every 3 days.
First 5 tracks as good as any album
On relistening it’s probably more of a four. The lyrics in many parts seem pretty vacuous. After those 5 tracks the 2nd halve fades off rapidly.

Couldn’t see a ranking for this, which makes me wonder if it’s new to the list. If so why? Doesn’t strike me as a seminal addition to the 1001. Echoes at times of fleet foxes, pink Floyd and most of all psychedelica. And we know the author loves this genre!

If this is #20 on the top 40 ‘cosmic rock’ albums, does this mean:
A. I have another 19 to listen to
Or
B. I am only half way cos if feels like I’ve done 20 already
Speaking of 19 or 20. Are the tracks really that length!
Prince
5/5
Reviews are interesting. I think I most agree with the view that it is not a totally memorable album in the sense of a classic you keep returning to. More of a 4 star. However in the context of this list it may deserve 5.
R.E.M.
5/5
Feel guilty having given prince a 5 star for an album with 4 hits but a few fillers. Admittedly open and closing track on purple rain are stonking.
However with Document we have a gold standard 5 star classic. Start to finish every track matters on this album. This is the kind of classic that you can hold any other against.

David Bowie

I am a huge Bowie fan. And he deserves a rake of albums in the 1001 list. However, he does not deserve automatic entry just because he released an album in 2014. I think entries like this do a disservice to the list and new artists, there are artists who remain relevant in old age, but he wasn’t one of them and that wasn’t a problem because he was a genius at his height
PS this is his worst album cover

Absolute classic. I don’t think there is value comparing Document, life’s rich patent and automatic for the people, each are classics. It often just depends on at what point you discovered REM. For me I’d heard document and saw them live. But the album I bought was Green. Truly transformative.
Love everything they’ve ever done. Right up to the end they produced classic contemporary and challenging music.
Green is a proper album. Nothing out of place and every track worth another listen. Head and shoulders above most of this 1001 journey. All topped off with an iconic cover.

900 albums until I reached one of the finest of them all.
Much has been written already. 2 additional reasons to make this one of the all time best.
1. The first time I heard side 2 of this album was on the radio in 80s. I was blown away.
2. You must watch Get Back. Apart from brilliant tvo, they compose most of this album too
Radiohead
5/5
Unbelievable 2 stonking classics in a row. (Abbey Road yesterday) I’m on the last 100 so maybe this is where the good stuff is hidden.
OK is a transformative album for the band, rock/indie music and me!
Grizzly Bear

Buzzcocks

I was sceptical. Especially based by a double hour and special edition recording. I immediately suspected that the double album was result of the special edition rather than the original, to be honest I didn’t bother researching more. The end pleasantly surprised not all brilliant, but it’s better than the bad week I’ve been having so I’m gonna give them four stars even though really it’s a tree.

Delighted to see Belle and Sebastian on the list. BUT why this album. I reckon 100 albums on the list are wrong choices made for the right reasons. Like he was trying to hard. Just choose the ones with the hits that everyone loves.
Neneh Cherry

Live albums are cheating and I was totally ready to trash this one. The word psychedelic appears in the genre and that’s enough to set me off.
You have to ignore the guff voice over tracks. Next you need to try to block out the memory of This Is Spinal Tap. If you can do both it’s not bad.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2/5
Live albums are cheating. This is the 2nd album in a row that’s live from within 2 years of the 70s. Thankfully not a double.

One of my favourite albums of all time. Probably the best double album on this list. It just keeps giving, song after song. When you think you know it go back and look at the lyrics, so rich and clever, more that you expected from some rock and roll tunes.
John Lennon
