The Fat Of The Land
The ProdigyAn immense album of beats and aggressive electronica. "Breathe" is the nearest "dance" has got to the Sex Pistols...brilliant stuff. Play it loud, ignore the neighbours, destroy a room.
An immense album of beats and aggressive electronica. "Breathe" is the nearest "dance" has got to the Sex Pistols...brilliant stuff. Play it loud, ignore the neighbours, destroy a room.
Technically sounds great. But I was very bored. Its just so lacking in charisma charm, guile.
Mmm...pub rock....you can see where Bon Scott got his shtick from.....minis on point for the tasteless "gangbang" 2
I like LDR. I bought the Born to Die album back 2012. I feel I was conned though. Lured in by the siren call. Thats probably massively sexist. Is it a bit style over substance? She's got hooks, the production is gorgeous. Its all a bit breathy, sad, 50s pastiche with edgy lyrics. This is similar. (Also, this is 7 (seven) albums in! SEVEN.) Its also probably too soon too soon to claim its one of the top 1000 albums when its only 2 years old. Don't know really. 3.5 Norman Fucking Rockwell is better.
Tight, distinctive, economic. Great bass that's used like a counterpunctual rhythm guitar. Cryptic and unusual lyrics. Brilliant stuff.. there are a couple of songs that wash over...but I like this a great deal. Solid 4.
The recording is great and its all very tight but it does kinda wash over me....The guitar solos are great... but tberes just not enough light and dark. Embarrassingly sorry.
Stream of consciousness here. I remember where "Start" was released. All my close football mates were new "mods" I liked Rush and Pink Floyd and shit British HEAVY METAL. I remember telling them it was a rip off of Taxman by the Beatles.. ( i read it in the NME)..."Start" went straight to number 1 in the charts. Thought they (Weller) wrote some great songs though hated the scratchy guitar and Wellers London accent...(this also put me off Albarn) Still don't like the band much but they were miles better than the bloody Style Council. Rant over. However "Thats Entertainment" is a 5* song.
Ok. I like this a lot....Love the sparseness of the production...I know nothing about the band/collective but will investigate more...as 50yo white male i realize that I may not be the average target/consumer of this. (am I racist to say that?) Anyway it has class and its amalgam of modern funk/soul/jazz is highly appealing. Great stuff.
Great concert....there are a lot of live Dylan albums out there...this one obviously is there because of the "Judas" "I don't believe you, you're a liar" confrontation in Manchester from the folk(ies) who thought he had "sold out".... it you like Dylan, it is a great gig. (Both acoustic and electric!)
Ok....I'm doing my best to listen to albums that I wouldn't normally touch with a barge pole (as the expression goes) Got through half of it...unremarkable Seattle cock rock/grunge with lotsa drug references...it all becomes a bit samey and depressing. I like the tone of the lead guitar. Won't pursue further....(this probably means I'm going to get a Pearl Jam album at some point doesn't it. .?)
This band are new to me. They are crudely a love child of the Velvet U and the Pogues and the Bad Seeds. Punk garage. Frantic but unremarkable songs. I'm unlikely to return to. Nothing awful, nothing essential. Prob really good live. Its gonna be a 3.
An immense album of beats and aggressive electronica. "Breathe" is the nearest "dance" has got to the Sex Pistols...brilliant stuff. Play it loud, ignore the neighbours, destroy a room.
First point is that half of tracks are "greyed"out on spotify so can't be heard. What's left is tight and funky. It also has that lovely dry production that you yearn for. The Temptations go into a funky-psychedelic phase with this album ...lots of intermittent effects laden guitar. Solid 3.5
Predictable I know but he's a bit dour and dull...I think the lyrics look great written down (hey, he was a poet first) Can you whistle a tune from this 2nd) album? Bird on a Wire? No, nothing! The words alone are not enough. If Len sounds bored singing it then surely I'm allowed to be bored listening to it. Also, too many tracks with a Jews Harp. (Is this still an acceptable term?) He looks really good in a hat though.
It probably shouldn't work but it does...a Johnny Cash on death's door covers some unlikely songs with immense gravitas. Hurt and Personal Jesus are both epic in their way. All praise Rick Rubin.
I've always had a problem with the Who...Moon was ace. Townshend is a bit too arrogant and Daltrey has a grating voice. The Kinks wrote better songs but didn't get the adoration (at the time..) I still don't get how this album is so revered. Its ok.
Don't know much about B&S except they seem a bit fey and bedwetting. However I quite like this...I did a bit of a Google and its considered their masterpiece....will try again with others. I like the different textures of the melody lines and the tunes are well hummable. Success. 3.5 but I'm gonna give it a 4. (Played it again. Still good. Still a 4)
Never heard of Hookworms. Comes in like a lost LFO track then turns into a psych pop art rock thing. Hard to pigeon hole really. Keyboards like Stereolab. Bit of Neu. Probably good live. Kinda throws the kitchen sink at everything in the recording studio. Not that keen really. (Unlike the music journalists who gave it 4 and 5 almost everywhere) Maybe it needs more listens...
Another album of historical interest. The Yardbirds were once the home of Clapton, Page and more significantly Beck. I think this is the only UK album.. This is full of meh psychedelic blues. Great sparse production. Solid 3.
I know 4/5 songs on this album and they are all decentish. (\"Without You\" does grind my gears though)Trouble is when you put them altogether on an album it all sounds a bit eclectic with no real flow. A real mish mash. Don't know what else to say. Nilsson had a longish career and this was by far his biggest album. He loved a beer or 7 with his pals Ringo and Moon...died in his 50s of a heart attack. Also rock stars died in his London flat. Another dull 3.
Great album...I like Bowie when he does the longer tracks. 4 of the 6 tracks are classics. The other 2 are good..Love the grooves, production is good, reference and reverence to Kraftwerk.. it all fits together well even though DB was coked up through it all! 4.5
REM debut album. Charming American jangle indie pop/rock. Going against the 5 star critical acclaim here as its very inoffensive but unremarkable . Stipes voice is distinctive and the guitar and rhythm are fine but it seems a bit meh.
Now I love this band so its a challenge to be objective but here goes...It's a brilliant album of obtuse lyrics and hummable tunes....some of them heartbreakingly beautiful. Alligator and Boxer are often seen as their strongest albums but this one shows s lot of maturity. Brilliant stuff. 4.
Weller. (Rolls eyes) Its all very well composed and produced but its all a bit dull. I was never a fan of his voice through all his bands and this problem remains while solo. He tries to achieve some degree of soulfulness and it doesn't hit the spot for me. I like the twanginess of Sunflower. MEHfather. MEH rock.
Well a quick glance at the reviews on give it either 1 or 5 stars so theres quite a lot of polarization. I remember the music press gave it 4s and 5s... here goes...Ok...I like a lot of the beats and dark electronica that backs lot of the tracks...it gives it a sense of urgency...however I I can't get past the 'pussy, dick, nigga" lyrics that permeate 90% of the album and the nauseating ego on tracks like 'I am a god" 2 star for the backing tracks.
Tight, distinctive, economic. Great bass that's used like a counterpunctual rhythm guitar. Cryptic and unusual lyrics. Brilliant stuff.. there are a couple of songs that wash over...but I like this a great deal. Solid 4.
Never heard of them. Pleasant but highly whimsical folk psychedelia that reminds me of Love but is lacking any killer tunes. Its only 28 mins long and the tracks are shortish but it still drags a bit The Wolf of the Velvet Fortune (5 mins) really outstays its welcome. 2.5
Ok upfront. I didn't think I was going to like this but its pretty ace. Inventive, it grooves, 2 classics and not a duff track amongst the rest. Solid 4. The rhythm is tight and driving and the songs are diverse but do work as a coherent album. Overall I will play this again and is the ultimate test of a 4 album.
Let's face it RH went weird after OK-C and a lot of people didn't like it. Me included. I've grown up now and know the new stuff is better. In Rainbows is at least a 4.5. It's hard to go back. Here goes. Listens. Do I prefer the newer stuff? Yes. Is this a great album?. Hell yes. Also isn't Bullet Proof brilliant. I appreciate the ones that were more fillers. Street Spirit however is godlike.4.5
Its fair to say that after 3 albums of singer-songwritery regular stuff she went a bit weird on this one. Die hard fans love it. ....and play....Yeah batshit crazy tbh. Suspended in Gaffa is pretty normal but the rest is a odd set of strange backing vocals, polyrhythms and angular tunes that take some patience (it needs several plays) I admire the ambition but it all sounds overly angry. It does mellow out towards the end of the 2nd half but then just to bring you back to Planet Bush a donkey appears. I'm an admirer of KB but still find parts of this impenetrable. Gonna be a 3.
God i hate that song!!!!!!the album version better not be longer... ok PLAY...8 and a half minutes!!!...Vincent is a lovely song but its all a bit wet. Dont know what else to say really. Its very earnest. He plays the guitar well but its all a bit meh..Still dislike the title track.
TBH it's pretty inoffensive lightweight 80s pop (though I am a miserablist) Not a big fan of the main backing singer whose tones grate on me. The lyrics are all a bit simple/banal. 4 hits though and I rather like (bit OTT, and orchestral) Victims which finishes it all off...2.5
The YYYs are a band I'm aware of but never really delved. Lots more dancey than i expected. Overall good though I think it will bite properly after several listens. Really liked Runaway. Engaging singing/lyrics from Karen O. Great production and distinctive unpredictable tunes.
Not a big listener of Rap and I hated Yeezus which was an offering a week ago.. this however is better. Good grooves. The lyrics portray an experience of growing up in the 'hood and are not a procession of ego posturings. No skits too. Solid 3. (It would prob be a 4 if I liked the genre)
Stoner rock dude. I know Songs for the Deaf and it doesn't grab me the same way but still it contain some great riffs and I may well play again. (Must explore the albums of Kyuss) Feel this is a 3.5..
Not all album i know. Brutal grinding riffs. Iggy has shouty yelping vocals that feel just right..The tracks don't overstay their welcome. Some people may find the production s bit scratchy but it just works. 3 seems harsh. 3.75
This is stuff I would never listen to normally. Its different, slightly proggy and refreshing. The production is wonderfully naturalistic. A double album is perhaps too much. I will return to it.
I know it well...This plus Massive Attack plus Portishead make the Holy trinity of Bristol Trip hop. A mixture of seductive beats and (mostly) nervy rap and soul Tricky, to his credit, is happy to drop into the background on some tracks. Its heady, intoxicating stuff. Solid 4
A sprawling double album written on cocaine. It didn't have the stature of its predecessor but is is still a solid album. Production is very tight.. *Those funeral dry drums) Sara remains my favorite Mac song (though on the on the original album it was hacked from 6 to 3 minutes) Sentiment says its a 4...but I think its really a 3.
This got some flak back in the day as Mr Moby had whored out most of tracks to adverts. Hes a good egg being all vegan and that but its a bit formulaic. Take an old blues vocal/lick sample is over a beat with a Fairlight. A disparate collection of tracks that don't really stand as a great album. I didn't like it then and and I'm not won over now. This sounds like a 2 review. Maybe I'm being too harsh. 3
I have a great deal of love for this album. The Irish folk rock sound so authentic compared the previous pomp. The voice, the lilt, th concept. Those violins. Its irresistibly happy in its approach. Mike Scott knows instinctively when its ok for a sing to run for 6/7 minutes. Yeah there are a couple of fillers but it gets away with it.
Raw American 69s garage. Lottsa screaming and sax....some original songs but lots of covers of rock n roll standards..upfront and honest. What it does it does well. Can't justify a 3. It's a 4 from me.
This has been on my shelf for decades. You need to be in the right mood but it is essential Eno and essential ambient...4 longish instrumental tracks that slowly evolve. Music to get lost in.
Yikes 90s American skate punk is not really me. Bit like Green Day. Bit angry and sweary and shouty. Gonna try my best bit may not last tbe whole album. Ok got to track 8 then gave up because I'm not enjoying it and lm a bit tired tbh..Hard to compare i know but I prefer it to that Slice in Chains album..
Thought this was gonna be proto grunge but its after the death of Cobain..(7th album appaz).a bit shoegazey tbh and the vocals are quite soulful. Quite a pleasing surprise...Some filler but I am encouraged to look at other ST albums.
A strange album bookends by 2 10 minute guitar wig out tracks.. The rest of the album contains more regular 3 minute songs that are frequently rocky but still contain some funky grooves.
Country. One on my least liked genres but hey open minded eh.... (also DP is just great as a person) Anyway kicks off with 2 bangers, the title track and Traveling man. Starts to drip into inaneness after. At least the songs are sort and the whole album is lass than 30 min. Ok picks up in the second half when it loses some the country tropes. ( Liked Here I am) Gonna be a 3
Wow. Never heard of him. Pop the Spotify in the car on the way to work and then a big warm bath of an album comes on. Soulful, Steeley Dan guitar licks. Orchestra. Chilled grooves. Experimental jams. Semi psychedelic funk. A voice from heaven. Brilliant stuff. 4
Ok....its not as good as Low. .but its still great. Its an uneven experience but Bowie can do that. Is Joe the Lion a decent song. No. Does some of side 2 wash over you.? Yes. Fripp on guitar is brilliant. Title track is a colossus...most of side one is epic in its angular awkwardness...lots of side 2 give me "feels". Easy 4
Ok 14 songs and a grand total of 15 minutes. I find this hard to appreciate . There are riffs.. the vocals are shouty. The lyrics are angry and rebellious. production is raw (yeah I know its supposed to be.) There is little to engage with. Don't get it....prob never will. 2.
Jazzy Latin Rock. 3 big tracks on here...C Santana is undoubtedly a great guitarist . I find it a bit wearing after a whole album (you need to be in the mood for that percussion) but it is solid stuff. 3
30 minute album. The voice. The backing. The soul The songs I'm pretty tight giving my 5s but let's face it she is the queen. The is apex Franklin. No messing.. Incredible. Five.
Prob the greatest KB album. Side one 5 solid 5 minute tracks. 4 of them were hits. Side 2 is a long suite of epic emotion and textures. Its hard to be critical except to say some of it sounds a bit 80s. (especially the overproduction drum sound and that overused fretless bass sound) Something warns me off a 5. But it is a 4.5.
Whoa...wasn't expecting this. I know the 4 album run from Trespass to Selling England. Never explored this... Ok half way in.... thing is I like i like prog and I find it a bit of a featureless landscape. I really think it needs several listens.. also those old sounding keyboard solos are becoming a bit wearing...on the positive note its good that they lost their lyrical whimsy. 2.75
Automatically assumed this was Fela Kuti.. Not good... Another classic example of how this project introduces music that you would not normally listen to. Vibrant Afropop. 73 mins is a bit long! You have to being the mood, but it is intoxicating stuff. Multilayered rhythm, brass, guitar and vocal. 3.75
I've had this album for 20 plus years but haven't played it for a decade at least. Its still pretty magical. The genre hopping that annoys some people works well for me. Hes equally good at fast and slow songs. An unpredictable joy. 4
I think its fair to say this is the least accessible of the 4 VU albums and often gets the most kudos. The Gift annoys me a bit as you don't really want to listen to the story more than twice. Sister Ray is s behemoth. The production is deliberately rough and ready. To think this is a 1968 album takes your breath away a bit. Also Reeds guitar on "I heard her call my name" Remarkable. I feel I should like it more than I do. Still, 4.
Really. 1980s American cock rock. One of the best 1000 albums of all time. Hmmmph. Impress me...I hope Jump isn't the best track cos I'm not a fan. Roth is an obnoxious arsehole. EvH is a great guitarist...but if I'm gonna lay into Yeezus for its lyrics its only fair to point out the shite that runs though this load a bollocks. (Hot for Teacher is exhibit #1) 2.
I mean. I could listen to it all day. Its just a bit bland and eeeezy listening. Lovely sax tone. A lot of maracas shaking. Its twee and its tuneful and a bit forgetful. Its hard to rate so I'm gonna give it a 3. Mellow man.
Not on my radar. Great suits! Before I listen/Wiki, I guess its a country-rock thang? Ah Gram Parsons. Died in his 20s of booze and drugs. Hit it! Ok I see that this album did poorly on initial release but now is held in quite high esteem. Its kinda washes over me. Workmanlike but unmemorable. 3
I wish I liked the Jam more, I unfairly have an issue with Wellers estuary accent. The album is solid though... little to actually dislike. Much like Sound Affects there some strong songs. Think I prefer this one. 3.75 rounded up to 4.
So many phases of PSs backstory. I only really know the (obv) dancey Screamadelica and the MBV mayhem of EXTRMNTR...(I know there is an early "jangle" period and that bluesy rock era too) This is is like a psychedelic film soundtrack. Some interesting stuff but not sure when I would play it. Ho hum.
The metal band loved by punks. Their most famous album named after their most famous track which Lemmy hated. It fast, heavy and a bit repetitive. Not for me.
First band I fell in love with. This is also the first album I bought. Its cheesy and a bit over produced. It also has great tune and a bagful of singles including Mr Blue Sky which seems to never age. Its got the usual strings and Lynne's falsetto layered backing vocals. Tempted to give it a 4. Nah.
Sounds like Free. Wiki's. Has same singer. Blues rock... solid...not really engaged with it. Bit showy and uneventful. Prob sounds better going down the motorway. Maybe not. 3
Must admit I've never explored DP albums. This is great. The 2 "hits" are epic...and there are other great tracks. . It holds together well as a thematic whole. Impressed. Its dark and driving. Ominous melody meets oppressive lyrics. Clear 4.
At last a 5 to add! For ages I used to think that this came after Ziggy. I brilliant collection of tracks that only Bowie could write. No duff tracks. (I don't mind Kooks at all) Classic. Its hard to pull a favourite. Life of Mars is eternal..FIVE.
Gene Clark is the former Byrds guy. Not a big fan of the Byrds jingle jangle. This is more laid back Dylanesque country folk with lots of harmonica. Nothing jumps out at you but it is pretty mellow and chilled. Hard to dislike. 3.5
Whooa. Loveless. Gonna love other peoples reviews here. The apex of shoe gazing. Walls of guitar that overwhelm and almost destroyed Creation Records due the Kevin Shields perfection seeking. I know it well. And playyyy...The sheer joy of "when you sleep" the magnificence of "soon" There is nothing like this album. 5.
Going to be difficult. This is my desert island Led Zep album..so good.. but it has flaws ...and playyyy. A band at their peak though I'm aware that the recordings were made over a couple of of years. Bonham is the greatest rock drummer. It rocks it rolls.. You could easily make a 5 star single album out of this double but I still give it a 4.5 and round it up! So many highlights. Flaws...? No flaws its a 5.
I do find this grunge genre really dreary. I think Nirvana worked because they used the Pixies blueprint. I feel no love for this. Its fast frantic and unmemorable. I don't actively hate it it just leaves me empty. Not much else to say.
Not a genre for me. I understand it's significance but I hate the interludes and the lyrics are just comic bravado. Love the kung fu soundtrack samples and how rhe different voices work together. I guess this polarized a lot of people but I'm gonna give it a 3.
I own this...and its prob tbe best CB album...intense and unrelenting big beat dance music...they know their stuff. Often a surprise round each corner. It ends with the big beat prog masterpiece of the Private Psychedelic Reel.. Thought this was going to be a 3 but its 4.
Massive album of the 80s. Contains big hit singles. And from my home city. I have problems. Although I like electric pop. 1 I haye the big drum sound. 2. The lyrics are a bit inane. 3. Oakey's voice is like nails down a blackboard to me. Will never love it. Sorry. Can't take away the big tines though. 3
Ah...,The Who. I whinge about the Who. My argument is that the Kinks were better. Townshend isn't a great guitarist. Daltrey always seems to sing on the edge. They seem to have created a mythology. Oh well. Surprise me..Plaaaayyy. Yeah...great drumming from Moon. Most songs are short. Meh. 2.75
Know of them....feel like I will say early Stones rip off....here goes...first thought are that the production is tight. Its ok you know . Would i play it much in the future probably no. Like the texture from the keyboard. Voice and guitars are strong. Still a 3.
Pop punk with attitude...great singles. Kid and Brass in Pocket. Love Private Lives that Grace Jones made famous. Some of side one is a bit anonymous. Hyndes voice is so distinctive. Its not groundbreaking but hey. Solid 3.5
I don't get the love. Its lame, lazy and tired. I can imagine it being played in the elevator of some cheap hotel. Country superstar plays non country songs. Hurrah Well done. I'm tempted to give it my first one. But won't 1.75. PS J Cash does this concept with balls.
A strong double album usually considered EJs best. Some massive singles and some weaker filler tracks... solid and bears a lot of repeated plays...I wonder if a double was too ambitious 3.5.
I usually get excited when you i get world music. I was surprised by the shortish 3-4 mins tracks and it didn't really grab me. There were no memorable hooks and it kinda washed over me. However there were plenty of funky grooves and instrumentation. Still, wanted more. 3
Rap. I always have a problem because rap is not a genre I listen to. The skits are annoying. The samples are fresh and sparse. The F-Ratr is v high. Lots of lyrics about tough life in the street. The album is also way too long . Some of th be tracks are kinda pleasing. 3
Massive fan of this album...Its a relentless bleak affair. On this (3rd) album they have lost all connections with trip hop and plough a epic sweep of electronica and Beth's vocals sound like she's on the edge of a breakdown. Some of it is downright terrifying. Not for the weak of heart. Great stuff. 4.
Ok never listened to a GM album but with a couple of exceptions this is quite a moody introspective work which i liked more than I thought. The long Cowboys and Angels in the middle was a highlight. 3.5
Not for me. I don't like Lovefool and I really dislike the Sabbath cover. The rest is very meh. Inoffensive wishy washy indie rock. I have no idea why it is on the list. Even the album cover looks like a mistake Solid 2
Mmm... to be honest....I don't really understand it....I don't mean French. Its just the nature of the vocal cabaret delivery. It puts me on edge in a bad way...If I was in Paris and it came out of a bar I would find a different bar. I'm sure it has cultural significance (it gets a lots of positive scores on here) but its lost on me so I can only give it a low mark as it is so unenjoyable. 1.75.
Its not subtle. Big Beat. Massive drum sound. Much repeated vocal samples. Rhythm pauses and big "drops" wherever possible. On top of that it contains 4 big hits and it sold in tons though it seemed that every copy was in a charity shop 5 years later.. Its full of joy admittedly but it all feels a bit cheap. 3.
Southern Rock from the good 'ol Boys of white boy boogie. Doesn't wear that well i feel though I know a lot would disagree. I guess its pretty strong for a debut. I remember getting Freebird on 12" vinyl way back in the 80s and I remember the lyrics spat with Neil Young.. Competent guitar work. The vocals have a clichéd drawl. Nothing stands out that much. 3
Thought I was going to hate this but it was ok(ish). Liked the distonal guitar sounds, production is quite tight. Vocals are bearable. Its aggressive and heavy Will I play it again? No. This stuff always feels like its listened to by high-school shooters. I know I'm not the target audience. 3
Mmm. Godfathers of industrial. It was made to disturb. As an art project I think its a 4/5 but it would need context. As an album of music it's a 1.
This is seriously good and looking at his discography I've got a lot of listening to do. Beautiful arrangement, some amazing blues especially on the first album, I love his use of backing vocals. The second album seems a bit more laid back...Strong.
Entertaining. Nothing that took my breath away. Its no Exodus. So much prefer the live version of No Woman NC. Solid 3.
Didn't know she died last year...bit taken aback. Not a massive fan but saw her at a festival once. Anyway. Very country. Lovely voice. Do the songs stand out? Ok to be honest, no. It is very listenable and I often say I don't like the genre much. 3
Good set of songs from the punky folkies. The Christmas song in the middle seems a bit odd (though maybe not at the time)
90 albums in. This is the worst thing I've heard. Its full of dull acoustic dirges with orchestration. Its almost like they said let's make an album hippies will like. Some of the lyrics are hysterically bad. (God, the one about Thomas Edison?) Dull bad dull bad. And its a bloody double album. Why? A disgrace. 1 (one)
I ve always felt i should love SY but I find them unlovable and smug. Bit vacant. I feel this with this. Slurry vocal, noisy guitars. 3
80s pap. Yeah there a couple of huge singles but its all a bit sham. The lead singer thinks he's a bit Bowie and doesn't pull it off The synth sound is really repetitive. It has a joyful vibe but its not for me. Not that great really. Lightweight. 2
Not a massive fan of the MSP. Their themes seem to overreach as much as Bradfield voice. The odd orchestration seems out of kilter too. I admire the ambition as some kind of Welsh punk Springsteen. but it doesn't work for me.
Ahggh. I know there is quite a few EC albums on here. Like the guy, lyrically good. Don't love the voice, I find it a bit annoying. Good set of songs that are diverse is style. Its a tad bland but it is solid. Difficult. Gonna be a 3.
Old skool hip hop!...feels like a album with a brilliant track and lots of obvious filler. (though Scorpio is interesting) I'm thinking that at this time rap "albums" were not really a thing. 12 inch extended mixes were where it was at. This strikes me as a cash in. 2
The opening salvo of 3 tracks are really good. Full of anger, energy and spittle It fades into a bit of repetition after that. Lyrics are always an issue. Not something I would choose to play but I see its value and its place in history. 3
I'm trying to look at albums I've lived and loved with fresh eyes. Nope, that doesn't work Led Zep debut. 1969. Tunes, hooks, Page, Bonham, energy. It is brilliant. Timeless. Essential. Classic. Solid 5.
Big fan of Moon Safari so had some hope for this. It is quite pleasing but it is a film soundtrack..so is incomplete without the visuals. Should it be here? Anyway there are some pleasing (repeated) themes but can't give it more than a 3.
Don't know why this doesn't gel with me maybe its a bit too snarky. And twee. 3/4 big hits from the middle of that awful Blair/Britpop era. Lots of clever smutty lyrics. A couple of songs drag on too long.Umm don't know what else to say really. 3.
VF. The sound is very distinctive (especially for the 80s) lots of dry acoustic guitar and bass with a skiffle drum. but I find it all a bit unlovable. The singer sounds a bit smug and the punk-folk thing doesn't do anything for me. Its workmanlike...3
I rather like this album. The beats are uncomplicated. The delivery is classic. Kanyes production is tight. The repetitive "i was a nobody but now I am important" is a bit repetitive but still it kinda fits. Girls(x3) seems a bit eye rolling. 3.
Old skool hip hop...a bit shouty. A bit repetitive at times...but the energy. Some classics. Solid 3
80s albums suffer badly in my rating. I love the era for pop singles. But, largely, the albums from the Human League to A-ha are unbearable. This however has guile, and certainly doesn't sound dated. I need to explore this guys body of work. well crafted songs with curiously intense lyrics. 4.
Always loved this. Experimental and accessible. Half way between his rock and ambient phase. Fripps guitar is astonishing. Brilliant. 5
Its hard to rate this. Brilliant voice, immaculate production. Everything polished. Decent songs but its all a bit smooth. Its very good at what it does but its all so safe and nice. 80s soul queen. 3.5
I like this album. The songs mostly jump into life and they are inventive. JHs work as astonishing. It feels like its recorded live which is good. Little Wing and the title track are classics. Its a tad indulgent at times but i think that is part of its charm. 4 I think.
Great soulful voice. Super production. Classy. Lost a bit of interest towards the end. No classics but solid throughout.
This looked intriguing. South African jazz. I was expecting some rhythms with lively brass. The upbeat opening track "Mandela" is ace. It then all becomes a bit dreary and unremarkable. Disappointed. 2
Its all a bit alien. Amazing voice and terrific rhythms. All sang in some Senegal language. The synth brass is cheap sounding and irritating after a while. The Bryan May type solo on the last track is a bit strange. Interesting but I'm sure I wouldn't play this again.
Nirvana third last and strongest album. Pulsing with riffs, angst anger and screams. Brutal but listenable. Strong 4.
Quite liked this. Is it nu-metal ? Strong vocals. Clean riffs. Bright production. I'd like to see more of the electronica in the mix. The turntablism seems a bit peripheral. No real killer tunes. 3
I admire the PSB though I've never listened to an whole album. Went though a bit of a rollercoaster. The songs are so well crafted and produced yet by midway I felt a bit ambivalent....then i approached the end and I feel a bit hooked on the sheer joy/melancholy of it all. Bit torn.
I understand its influential but it's all a bit silly. Spinal Tap in real life. All the Satanism stuff is a bit daft but Teachers Pet has lyrics that defy reading. It's a dumb and difficult album to finish as its so tiresome. Double finger horns! Shite. 1
I know this one and its still pretty magical. Soulful songs about bad relationships and broken hearts. Immaculate production. (From Ronson) The title track is a masterpiece. Clear 4.5
Debut. It's kinda a compilation of covers so we are really reviewing the voice and production here which is good. Just feels a bit fragmented. I'm hoping "Dusty in Memphis" comes up later as that is pure gold. This has fine moments but isn't anywhere near unified. 3.
Don't know what to think....I like the Albini production and the quiet/loud dynamics. Needs a few more memorable hooks. It probably needs more listens. I like how she puts everything into the lyrics... 3
My fave of their classic first 4 albums. They mastered the quiet/loud thing which Nirvana later nicked. The tunes are ace there are 4/5 classics on the this one. (Love Wave of Mutilation) Black Francis lyrics are weird and cryptic. Essential stuff. 4
Yikes. Somewhere between the Talking Heads and Devo. Some bits sound interesting. However his voice is like fingernails down a chalkboard to me. Enough. It's joyously art rock but not a great experience. 2 I'm afraid.
It's like the very sleazy 70's Stones...not sure its that great or important but it would sound better after a few more listens and preferably a couple of old fashions.
Poodle perm rock. Cringey pop tunes with clichéd sub par Springsteen lyrics. Dumb ass album that hit the charts with 2 massive songs. Competent but inane. 2
Never rated cream. Hate Claptons falsetto. Repetitive and over lauded as a guitarist. And an A-hole. The skittering jazz drum seems wrong. Its all flat and dreary.Couple of decent tunes up front. Not a believer. 2
I really like this in a cool indie shoegazey kinda way and WILL explore their back history. Its light and left field. Though to be objective im not sure what makes it one of the greatest albums. Hon a give it a standard 3.
When I first heard the 2 singles from the the 80s I thought it was a bit of a gimmick. . In retrospect it is way ahead of its time transposing Soweto rhythms with hip hop and Art of Noise dynamics. A solid 4 for its sheer exuberance. (And i usually hate 80s albums)
Charming but easily forgettable jangle pop. I feel this is another album that is on here because it is historically significant. Its so lightweight. Our Lips are Sealed is a great song but Terry Hall's (he co-wrote it) FB3 version is a lot better. Sorry Go-Gos, 2.
My first Stones album (on 1001 Albums) and prob my favourite. Superbly sleazy and here the band working like a machine in its fluidity. They are at the height of their powers. Gimme Shelter has the best intro of any song ever. You Can't Always Get... is a amazing album finisher. Lots of amazing stuff in the middle. No filler as they say. Clear 5
My second PJH album. This is is far more accessible and less visceral than the early Rid of Me. A good set of songs with a little bit of help from Thom York. Her voice seems more prominent yet more restrained. A solid 3 i think.
I only know the debut and the final (LA Woman) and tbh have considered them a rather overrated band especially with Morrison being lauded as a poet and guru. However I like the bluesiness of this especially the first side. The second side seems a bit lame in comparison. 3.
A strong jazz album. Unusual time signatures. Sparse bright production. Happy summery tunes.. Take Five and Blue Rondo are ace.. Hard to go wrong really.
Is there an album more English? Quirky, very 60s. Much underappeciated and possibly the greatest Kinks album despite not having any hits. God bless Ray.
Ok. A true landmark album. The first (proto)metal album. Side one is brilliant. BS, Wizard, NIB. Side 2 lags a bit. Unwanted covers and the Warning is way too long. All recorded over about 12 hours in the studio live. Love the band but gonna be a 3 I think.
I only really heard the 2 previous fan fave albums (Diff Class, and His'n'Hers) which both have hits have a glib humour about them. This is much darker and at times is brooding and gorgeous. Will play again. 4
I love the early Eno albums. This, the first, is massively diverse and doesn't contain the ambient bits that appear in later ones. On Some Faraway Beach is epic. I'm not a massive fan of a couple of the harsher ones (esp Blank Frank) It's still amazing. 4
Funeral was always going to be a hard album to follow and with this they do well. Its it is still anthems at times but doesn't fall into U2 type tropes. The production by the band in a church) sounds authentic ( whatever that means!) The new tunes hold their own (tbpugh one is nicked from an earlier e p.) As strong as the debut. 4.
Wow this album gets some bad reviews. SD are my massive comfort blanket. In some ways this album was their apex. Their lyrics, as always, are brilliant; full of sleaze and opulent grime. Production and muso wise it is immaculate (Go on, yawn) It may break no musical boundaries and may be the antithesis of 'Never Mind the Bollocks' (Same release year) but it's not lounge music. I love you SD. 4
Yay at last a rap album I can get behind. They can sing as well as rhyme. The beats have rhythm. The samples are interesting and the lyrics are not unpleasant. Prob still a 3 though.
Absolute bilge. Soft lounge hipster jazz..that just wafts away. Pleasant but totally without a memorable tune or ethos. A million special guests can't save it.. Why on this list? Bollox. 2
Yeah typical classic country. Those lonesome vocals; that steel guitar; its all a bit dour though feels authentic (he did go to jail) and consistent. (though it gets a bit more upbeat towards the end) Not for me. 3
Not sure what to think about this album. I like they took a harsher direction after the Joshua Tree. I like the more "indie" tracks (Fly, Zoo Station) "One" is brilliant. There are also some fillers. It's a solid 3.5!
I've tried so hard to like the TH. I've never got it. I like the double live album but the studio albums never gel. Maybe is the frenetic African rhythms. I don't know anyway. Its a solid 3.
Yikes classic alert. Haven't listened to the whole thing for 10 years. Here we go. Its America. Its wall of sound. Its blue collar mis/adventures. It's sequenced well. (Each side starts with a "up" song and finishes with a "down" song.) The tunes are epic, maybe too epic. Its hard to fault tbh. I notice it has a average of 3.6 so there a lot of people knocking down those 4s and 5s that really don't like Bruce And he saves Jungleland till the end. 4 or 5?
First album I've had that isn't on Spotify. Its a fine set of extended grooves. TBH it kinda droned on in the background (with YouTube adverts!) but didn't have any head turning moments.
Wish I could enjoy JM. I like singer songwriters. I like (some) jazz. I like some odd voices (N. Young, Hammill) However I can't gel with JM. Frustrating. I can't get along with the tunelines of her vocal delivery and I find the wandering bass very annoying. It all washed over me in a very unsatisfying way. Sorry. 2.75
Ok. Love the early LCD albums. Saw them twice then really went off them. Mostly because they made such a big deal of breaking up with big farewell gig, film, live album etc etc. then reforming a few years later. It all sucked. The 3rd album gave indication that they were running out of ideas and the magpie-ing of other artists was getting a bit wearing. Anyway. Play. I guess i wanted to really dislike this but its ok. There are lots of Berlin era Bowie references and slow Talking Heads funk. It doesn't have the killer tunes of Sound of Silver but its as good as the 3rd one. Decent.
A step beyond standard folk rock. Its clearly influenced by Sgt Pepper and the like. I'm not a big fan of the warble in his voice. Probably should be more recognized as an artiste.
I kinda dismissed this after the first couple of track but then kinda got drawn to its esoteric batshit nature. Her voice is great but her vision is pretty astonishing for a debut. Funk/soul is not really my genre but I have to admire.
Oddity. Jumps from chilled trip hop to easy listening to rap to Indian centric wailing. All with some kind of Nuclear weapons anxiety theme. It was nominated for the Mercury prize. Bland and annoying ar different times. Not for me. 2.5
I like the empowerment thing. As a 50 something male this is kinda not my thing....I also have an issue that something so recent has to be bloody special. Not sure this is. Its funky, souly and sweary...and quite short. Sorry. 2.
A strange amalgam of classical and folk that all falls a bit flat. Not sure who this appeals to really. Its not classical or pop or truely avant garde. The opening track is the stongest but it soon dips. Unmemorable. 2.
I used to like this kinda stuff when I was in my teens. I just find it a bit cheesy now. I mean it ticks all the classic heavy metal boxes but its all a bit meh. Post Sabbath riffs..angry vocals, iconic sleeve. Even a couple of hit singles.
My first Beatles (or Beatle related) album! Never heard this as I'm not that keen on the early stuff. Really competent 60s pop. Couple of great hits. Some filler tracks. Not for me.
Not a big fan of the album or the band. This is bloated, over reaching and as of these days a bit tasteless. Gotta admire the ambition but it misses.
Yuck, more 80s. Not a fan of the "Big" spacey sound with the massive drum. Some big hits the were massively overplayed. This guy always sounds (and looks) a bit sneery. 3.3. (This will sound really contrary but they made an album this year [The Tipping Point, 2022] which I've just listened to and I prefer it)
To my shame I only listened to this once after DBs death. Its a DB album like no other and is a mighty intoxicating thing. The rhythm of jazz guys, the invention of the songs.I will play more. Where the fuck did Monday go? RIP David. A strong 4.
Thus is lovely. County/Americana can be a bit suspect but this is sparse, haunting and leaves a warm feeling. 2 people picking acoustic guitars and GWs velvet voice. It all holds together well as an album. Will play again. Strong 4.
A long live album of Southern Rock blues. Blimey it goes on a bit. To be honest it could be one track that goes on for 2 hours. I wouldn't notice. It just turns into background noise. I mean they can play their guitars well....but really...i popped out to the local shop halfway through Whipping Post and the same guitar solo was still coming out of the speakers when I came back .....2.5.
Solid Smiths album that most consider the best. (I think I prefer Meat is Murder) Morrissey is an arsehole but well not judge the album on that. A set of strongs songs from an iconic band.
Uncanny. I've just had a Smiths album and commented that I wouldn't judge them on Morresey being such a twat. Well here we are Marr-less. Interesting. Its an OK...solid...would i listen to it again , probably no.
To be brief. They are a brilliant inventive band that write amazing music. This is their greatest album. This is a five.
As a teenager the Police passed me by. I like a lot of the singles by the screaming girls put me off with their adoration of 3 handsome blonde guys. This it their break up (and 5th) album. Its interesting. Sting can be a twat but he knows a tune (though lyrics can be banal) Love the drummer. I find it a bit lightweight. I have no idea what "Mother's is in the middle. 3
Its all about the voice. So smooth and enticing. But is it just disposable MOR? A lot of filler. I could listen to a greatest hits but there is some mush on here. And the Beatles cover is not helpful. 3
A FS album with a bossanova beat in the background. The combination with the lush strings seem a bit odd to me. 2
The Byrds lose their jangle and vo full country with Gram Parsons. Ridiculed by the country establishment at the time. Ots fine but it can be a tiresome genre with so many clichéd tropes.
Ah, shock rock. I'm always a bit skeptical of beat combos that have the "ooh a bit edgy" reputation as it makes up for a lack of tunes. This does little for me and especially not keen on the fun tracks about rape and necrophilia. Production socks too.
Pretty sure I bought this when it came out but didn't play it much. I thought i was gonna be dismissive but it's pretty damn good. The sweaty heavy blues must be great live in a small venue. Quite a lot of variety considering the genre. I can't give it a 3. It's too good for that Will explore more of their stuff.
Yeah...fast heavy metal. You gotta like thrash to like this. It's not for me but I kinda admire it the riffs as they have some joy in them. It's half way between a fast Sabbath and the Pistols. The production is surprisingly bright.. Is it a great album ? Prob not. 2
My problem with TR is that they bridge the whimsy of the 60s and hard guitar glam of the early 70s and it doesn't work for me. Bowie reinvented himself Bolan retains the flower power. The 2 singles that start both sides are strong but otherwise is all a bit meh. 3
Never loved Elvis. Never listened to an album. I Might prefer a more rocknroll 50's album than this as it is is mostly just smooth simpering pap. Great early stereo production.
New to me. The strong spoken political lyrics are distinctive. The lengthy backing tracks do get a bit repetitive at times but overall it stands out from standard gangsta hip hop. 3
Title track is ace. Otherwise its all a bit lame. The Hammond loses its initial love as you progress through the tracks. Similar slow plodding beats and some lazy covers. Not impressed. 2
I saw BDB live following the About a Boy release. My main memory was what a bad tempered arsehole he was. 18 years on i appreciate this more. I do think that less would be more. Running over an hour is impressive but stretching the patience. However the texture of the songs do vary. 3 5
Another album I bought some 15 years ago and didn't give much time to. On a listen in the car it swells with joy and rhythm. Very fond of Matty Groves. Sandy Denny sounds gorgeous and I will explore their other (2?) albums with her. 3.75
Tries my patience to be honest. All seems very adept and there are some interesting "textures" but orchestration is scatty and the often used vocal echo/reverb is oppressive. There is a lack of direction which may be due to cultural differences. Not for me and I don't think ill be exploring the extensiveback catalog. 2.5
Ol grumpy NY. Not on Spotify but I own this one. Always feels a bit drunken. It was written following the death of 2 band members that died through drug overdoses. It feels much more darker than the brightness of Harvest. A solid affair with gravitas. 4
Stoner hip hop rock? Peculiar niche genre. I know Huey from the radio and Scooby-Snacks was on a million compilation albums. Ok I guess. Kinda plods on in a laid back way.
Another C&W album. Its fine. I just find the genre tiresome. (Especially since I've been given Gillian Welch's Time) It's fine. I like WNs voice though nothing massively stands out. Prob wouldn't listen again.
I need to listen to more DM. I thought Violator was their greatest (I think I gave it a 4) but this is as good. The tracks merge into each other and it feels good. There is a sense of Joy Division type dread and the synth tones echo in your bones. Dark moody and damn good. Another 4.
Probably the first punk album I bought on Vinyl (in the 80s though) I know they were just a bit of a pub rock band that got caught up in the scene. The keyboards made them different. A punk Doors with ugly lyrics. "Sometime I'm gonna smack your face" Enjoyable punky pub rock. 3
I'm a sucker for this kinda thing. The harmonies, the horns, the strings. 12 minute of Papa was a Rolling Stones. Epic funk/Soul.
Not a massive fan of the genre but I like the rhymes and delivery. There's a desirable lazy sling to the beats. Quite a lot to admire. My enthusiasm did wain towards the end.
Bookended by 2 massive tracks this is an epic album. His voice isn't for everyone. 5
Big band music almost..? Not really my thing and to my shame I don't think I've ever explored Ray Charles. It all seems very adept. Swinging big band jazz. Solid 3 i think.
Another blindspot in my musical knowledge (and she has a big back catalog) She has a magical voice. Stripped down songs of life from South Africa. I like a lot of it...especially the slower ones.
Kinda think they would be great live but I find it totally unlovable in my front room. Thrash punk blues with flailing guitar and yelping vocals. Does nothing for me. 2 for its gusto.
Sad but only like the really popular REM phase. I don't really like the jangle stuff and I find Stipe annoyingly oblique at times. The One I Love is a banger. Dont like the list song. Everything else is solid but unmemorable. Played it again when i realized Spotify had put it in shuffle mode. There is some guile in the album but hey....Classic 3
PS's second solo album. 2 big tracks in Julio and Mother/Child Reunion. The rest are less memorable but have a sense of purpose. It all sounds chilled but can come across a bit lightweight. 3.5
Prince was a bit of a one off. Pop yet experimental. Funky yet hard rock guitar. Shite film and awful cover but an album of brilliance. Prob his best single album. 4
Ok love the debut. And Mezzanine is a masterpiece. This one is a bit wet. The long opening title track is excellent but it never returns to those heights. 3.
Synth driven art indie art pop that needs a few listens. The high male voices will turn some people off. I kinda like the vibe but there are are no killer tunes on there.
I guess this is post-riot grrrl....thought it was going to be shouty political throw away stuff but there is some guile and some banging tunes. Strong 3
U.S. Power pop including 2 massive singles from my youth. I don't hold it in such high esteem as others but it is a solid affair. Good production. Tails off a little on the second side. 3.5
One I know well. Saw the whole thing performed by the original guitarist plus others a month ago. Whimsical acoustic psychedelia. Alone Again Or is a key 60s track. It works well as an album. A strong 4.
The 4 run of albums from Paul's Boutique to Hello Nasty are really good. This one is pleasingly diverse, with crunching, funky pots of treasure. Great stuff.
Its all fine and competent. It doesn't have any killer tunes but if I was gonna play a non BM reggae album in the future I might come back. That all sounds so wet. Anyway its a 3.
An intense essential album. I'm not going to give it a 5 because it's a compilation of sorts. A dour drug recovering Cobain sounds totally on the edge. Interestingly choice of covers. Not totally acoustic as Cobain was uneasy. Strong and haunting
I have thus one on vinyl. I don't love it as much as I used to do. Nothing can Stop us is ace. The retro feel stop it aging. Is is twee at times by the melancholy balances it out. Though it was going to be a 3 but I've fallen in love with it again. 4.
Yikes. 80s. Irritating drum sound alert. Some massive singles though I'm not fond of the title track. The synth leads date really badly. I like Lennox as she is so distinctive. Sorry will never be tempted to play again 2.5.
5 massive post punk hits. Its a hard one to criticize. Brilliant vocals. Muscular guitars with pleasing rhythm lines. Stong 4 but is just a bit too bubble-gum to make a 5. Also a coule of the non-singles are skippable. Maybe I'm wrong. 4.5.
Don't know what to make of this. 60s folk prog jazz with Winwood distinctive vocals. Nothing massively grabs me but its all tight and has an enjoyable groove. Some of the instrumental passages remind me a bit of early King Crimson if they used regular time signatures! Bit baffled. 3
Yeah I find it washes over me leaving very little. There's nothing intrinsically awful about it ..... I'm just surprised he's 23 albums into his career. Stephen King reckon he's the best songwriter since Neil Young. I think Stephen King should just write novels. Massive Meh. 2.
Ok. Open minded but it's 77 minutes long which for any genre makes me roll my eyes. Interesting mix of funk and soul rap. Overlong. Not my thing.
Alex (from the Arctic Monkeys) side project. Feels more retro and orchestrated. Doesnt really leave a lasting impact ...its kinda a lush indy with usual AM sassy lyrics. 3
Always loved this album. New York art jazz punk from 1977. I love how they value the sound of each instrument especially between the two guitars. The melodies are so expressionate. Cruel but but all the other tracks (especially on side 2) are slightly in the shade of the magnificent title track. Strong 4
Strong debut from the AM. Very replayable and from my home city. Its probably a 3 but I prefer it over most of my 3s so its a 4. I don't think there is a bad track on the album. Mardy Bum!
Odd Brazilian psychedelia. I'm sure I've heard one of the earlier tracks in a Tarantino movie. Interesting but it kinda floated by like a fluffy cloud.
The Beatles were falling apart at this time. They created an album of near perfection. Masterful. Five.
Ok is this one of the greatest 1100 albums ever ? Probably not. Have I just been introduced to an artist that I've never heard of that I want to hear more of. Frickin YES! Electronic Folk. Bit of Stereolab bit of Broadcast bit of Steeleye Span. It pushes my buttons.
I'm not a fan of the SP. Corgans nasal vocals annoy me and the swooshy guitar sound isn't to my tastes. There are a couple of strong songs ...and some of the melodies are great but..I struggle. 3
Know this very well. It is a big warm bath of unchallenging melodic electronica. Perfect for a summer evening. Yeah it's a bit too nice and feature on hundreds of chill out compilations but is very lovely. 4
I tried this some years and found it hard to engage with...Let's go again....Yeah. I still don't understand the accolades. Its OK...Half baked tales of sexual liberation. Some sketchy guitar. No massive tunes.. i mean its bold and brash for a solo album but give me PJ Harvey anyday. 2.75
Strangely never felt the need to hear (beyond the obvious single) and its kinda just as I thought it. Not much to get youtr teeth in. Some 60s vibes. Failure has a good grind. It's a classic 3.
Yikes French. But just 28 mins. The first/last track is ripped onto a David Holmes album so I know and it works well. Ok I was a bit sneery but I think this is pretty awesome. The lyrics are a bit creepy...but the Cool as fuck background guitar. Those jazzy drums/bass The strings/choir when they come in!. 4
It grooves..(much like the second album that i am more familiar with). It gets a bit repetitive though it is also distinctive. I like the nassl tones of the main vocalust and the old school samples are warm. Would I play again, prob not. 3
Neo Jazz funk. There's a lot of aspirational Stevie Wonder leanings here and I thought I would dislike it but its pretty good as he experiments a bit. Great bass. I don't think it something I would follow up but a solid 3.3.
Mellow, smooth, cool. Dull. Smooth, Forgettable. 2.2 Also smooth.
Loved this band as a teenager. I played Child in Time so many times. Now I find them overly showy. I know that's the point. The Blackmore solos, the screeching of Gillan, the almost classical keyboard riffs. Its psyche heavy rock and it does little for me. The simplistic riffs of Sabbath and the purer blues of Zep trump it. This sounds like a band pulling in diff directions.
I like it when the generator throws these up. Really good production though the synthetic horns grate a bit. Didn't like the Imagine cover. Its over long. Some of the rhythmic strings are ace. 3
Brilliant improv solo piano played live on a decrepit piano he hated to a crowd in 1970 Cologne.. Long pieces that wander in interesting places plus occasional crowd noises plus moans from KJ. Staggeringly good. Feel the groove. Strong 4
Gotta admire this guys songwriting and especially the lyrics but tbh I don't find it that easy to listen to. There's quite a lot of politics going on here. Some basic piano some lush orchestration so it does bear repeated play .....its just so....serious. Maybe it means more if you are American? 3
God this is so good. And why have I not played it for so long....[embarrassed face]. DSs soulful vulnerable voice skates over heartfelt melodies, lyrics full of broken relationships and gorgeous strings. Some of the songs make me well up. Play in a low lit room with a single malt. Magical. I dont give many 5s. Best female solo album ever for me. Five.
Always struggle with this genre...never helps when the album starts with a shitty sweary skit. Gets better though. Immaculate production from Timbaland and in many ways it feels like his album. There are some deep grooves and plenty of well chosen guests to do some of the "singing". MEs choice of rhymes are a bit erratic at times...3.3
Heard this on CD (with Sunflower) a couple of years but found it insignificant. However although its no Pet Sounds it does have some interesting textures. Less vocal harmonies and more direct lyrics it requires repeated play. But for now it's a 3.
JD mean a lot to me. Their two albums are untouchable bedrock post punk classics Some people will complain that it is too depressing. They have not lived. This, the first of their two albums, is bleak, haunting and essential. "Here are the young men....the weight on their shoulders." These songs are born from despair. Utterly brilliant. Five
I'm a bit torn over this one. The involvement /appropriation of S. African \"world\" music was really different at the time. Some of the tunes are really good and I like PS. I find some of it a bit twee and some of the clunky 80s production affects some tracks. Its a 3.5.
The only thing I know about F Apple is that she had an album with a very long title. Thought I was going to be underwhelmed with some Tori Amos type thing. Nope. The textures (often jazzy) and the subtle experimentalism of the tracks grab me a lot. The tracks are diverse but hang together well. Needs several plays I think. And i need to explore the other albums...Four .
As a teenager I loved this band. Highway Star is possibly their greatest tune. Smoke on the Water is a bit of a dirge. There is less of Gillan's awful screams than In Rock but I still find it all a bit caveman. Lyrics are never going to win a Nobel prize and the constant keyboard/Blackmore duels tire. It's dated badly. I've lost the love. 3.
Its fine. Its funky. It has squawking guitar and horns. Not every track is s banger... a lot of it is ripe for a Tarantino movie. Everyday People is a memorable track.
Only got into MD about 5 years ago. At entry I only knew the reputation of "Blue" and "Bitches". Both are great however THIS is the apex of everything he did. Its hard to describe the feels it gives me. Outstanding. Moody, cool, understated, essential. FIVE.
Its a big sprawling epic that prob needs a bit of editing. A couple of ambitious spacy jams (eg "Merman") that seem to go in forever. JHs 3rd and final (double) studio album has some massive tracks "Voodoo Chile, Watchtower, Midnight Lamp, Crosstown Traffic" that gives it classic status. 4
I never really went with the adoration in the 90s but it's great set of angry songs with a good vocal delivery and some tunes that delivere hits. I want to dislike it but you have to admire the sheer force of nature. It doesn't merit a 5 but its damn good.4
Very raw proto punk. Not high on sophistication and has a brutal production. Its not for me but you have to admire the gusto.
If you like pneumatic drills, the sound of a 4 year old hitting some railings with a stick and Hitler shouting at you for 40 mins then this album is for you. Its not for me. Art statement 5. Enjoyment factor. 0.
One of MGs very sexy albums. It is beautifully produced, his voice is like velvet and it hangs together well as an album.....BUT...hate to say it but the 35 minutes wash over me and when it ends I feel a bit empty. (No sniggering at the back) I could have been one long track and I would have felt the same. Classic but a bit dull? 3.5
Nile Rogers is a bit of a genius. This is him...Lets Dance by Bowie is him. Like a Virgin is him. Also Chic, early hip-hop, the 80s, Daft Punk. He is a giant of late 20th century music. Anyway 4 massive hits on here that are joyfully stretched in their original form. I just don't know if 70s disco is s bit of a cheap art form. That sounds awfully snobbish. 3.5
New one for me. Smooth funky vibes that seems pretty ageless. Great production untarnished by the 80s. Can't really say much negative about it 'cept its not something I would normally choose to play. 3.5
There is no such thing as a "guilty pleasure" but SD is mine. They are a big warm hug of a band that never let you down from "Can't Buy a Thrill" to "Gaucho" 7 albums of brilliance. Everyone ranks them differently. This one is top 5 and has a couple of inessential tracks though the vibe is always there. 3.75
The two massive hits are brilliant. The rest is a bit wishy washy. The vocal harmonies give an interesting different texture but it also seems very twee.
Well, that was noisy. An American Bad Seeds? US noise punk. Scuzzy production. No clear tunes. Music for disaffected youth methinks. Means nothing to me. 2
I remember when these guys first came around the UK press called them an American Fall which annoyed M E Smith and S Malkmus. They are pleasingly different. Uneven chaotic songs with curious lyrics. A lot of it works but it will repel those that need more polish in their production. Perhaps not as good as the tighter follow up but it knows a tune. It is however too erratic at times
I've never listened to one of her albums. The title track is brilliant. Otherwise there are some catchy hits but it suffers from that bright/big drum 80s production which I really dislike and often whinge about. 80s albums average under 3 in my rankings. It's a shame as I always think of the 80s as a golden age of pop. 3 (It would have been a 2 without the title track)
A very strong album. Her voice is just amazing. The sparce arrangements take the while thing even more powerful. Overwhelming at times. 4.5
Ok. Wanted to dislike this but tbh its ok. It is, as they say, a bit "full of itself". The Oasis influence is clear. He comes across as a bit needy especially in the lyrics. Having said that there are some decent tunes and Angels is pretty timeless. Just take the 3 and piss off
Well this is a big warm hug of an album. (Apart from the drug addiction lyrical text!) The funk/soul orchestrations are sumptuous. CMs vocal delivery is unique. The production is everything (especially after listening to a series of 80s albums) 4
Becks depressing break up album is stripped down of samples but still contains some sumptuous orchestrations. The production is brilliant however its all a bit "woe is me" and the there are no stand out tracks. Its more mature than Odelay and Midnite Vultures but it is also more melancholic and tbh a little less fun. 3
Its a distinctive album of Van Morrison style Celtics soul with brass and folky violins. Come on Eileen is still ubiquitously annoying. Also K Rowlands voice is not for everyone. Full of gusto but its not something I lreally ove. A breath of fresh air in the sometimes naff 80s though.
I like this a lot. Its has an enduring innocence. The first half is a proto concept album. It has Moog on the first (proper) track. Bookends seems to be a bridge from the 60s to the 70. Sparseness and ingenuity. Its also chock full of tunes despite being under 30 mins long. What a rambling shitshow of a review. Just take the 4.
Unfortunately lumped in with the Britpop umbrella which the leader Luke Haines hated. Its likeable song driven guitar pop/rock that lost its way at the time. The bits of cello are nice. It kinda washes over me a bit but otherwise its all tickety boo.
Its fine. Workmanlike. Reggae, even the best, washes over me, much like country and western. Its pleasant but leaves me feeling a bit empty. A down the middle 3.
Ah, the albums that Radiohead changed tack. Its an important album but I hardly listen to it so here goes. Its jarring at times but its a powerful experience that was later distilled into brilliance. It's the sound of a band shedding its skin. I'm glad that its wasn't a double as Amnesiac was all recorded at the same time as Kid A. 4
Gotta admire the ambition of this. Double album of angular but melodic rock that varies over the 4 sides of vinyl. He plays everything on the first 3 sides. The last side is with a band performed live. Its a tad too smooth in the production for my tastes and I know TR backlashed against it saying he didn't want to be a male Carole King. Needs more than one listen. 3, I think
Very earnest singer songwritery from the 80s. Great voice and songs full of protest. Fast Car is great and there a couple of other good songs...there is alas some filler. None of her albums after this debut really made any impact. 3
Early UK acid house techno. It's very dense and is overwhelming intense in texture. It's intended for the dance floor, not my kitchen radio so I feel a bit lost. I love electronica but I like stuff that let's me breathe. 3
Must admit I didn't spend much time with this album. (Hey that's life.) And I thought it was going to be easily dismissible. But no. The genre 'dark caberet" fill me with dread but it seems musically inventive. You have to get over some of the screaming French vocals but its worth a further explore.
I really like the Getz/Gilberto album that has Astrid (and thd Girl from Ipanema). This is in a similar vein but a little too light and fluffy. I can't feel anything from the listening experience except thinking a must listen to more Stereolab (if you know you know) probably sounds better in a shady bar in Rio. In a freezing suburb of Birmingham it is a 2
I tried to get into FZ in the past. None of his musical phases do it for me. I like jazz, I like rock, I like prog. I don't like Zappa. This is no different. The opener, Peaches is fine then it becomes so tiresome. An indulgent wankfest. Sorry. Its probably me. 2
70s punk ska reggae thing that inspired a million Riol Grrrl things. It has an innocent charm and some of the song structure are unusual. Angular guitars in fractured rhythms. Groundbreaking and well worth a 3.
Pretty much a modern classic. They arrived as a force of nature. The album hold together well. Its epic in a U2 kinda way, it hit the loud quiet dynamic like the Pixies and it feels emotional. 4.5
The debut Pink Floyd album dominated by Syd Barrett before he lost his mind to LSD. A (the?) key album of British psychedelia. Whimsical and very much of its time. (Erm.. it sounds dated....) Songs about flowers and bicycles and some guitar freakouts. 3
I bought Parachutes when it first came out. Liked it but never thought they would become the current colossus now 9 albums in. Can't say why i lost interest. They are very NICE and have a bit of a cutesy U2 feel about them. This (the 2nd album) is frontloaded with big hits. They have a winning formula. It's fine. (shhhhhh.....it's a bit bland) 3
Bright, witty, bouncing happy jazz from the 50's. Dirty brass with a live sounding production. Not something I would usually play but it is a breath of fresh air compared to some of the albums that have rolled this way recently. 3
I'm not a great Hip Hop fan but this is good. The stripped down jazz with full acoustic bass rocks along and Q-Tips intelligent clean rhythmic non sweary delivery is excellent. Will probably return. Excellent 3.75
Dirty garage retro blues from Jack (and Meg) White. This was the 3rd album but the one that made them big on the indie scene. Still sounds really fresh. The sparse arrangement highlights the brilliant guitar from JW.
Kitch, oddly tuned guitars. As part of the post punk scene this always seemed a bit odd with its 50s throwback shieky vocals and visual styling. Rock Lobster was a college mainstay. 3 (i think)
A stunningly good Christmas album featuring that wall of sound. Can only be played for a couple of weeks of the year and Spector is a bit of a dick.
I am very fond of the Kinks. It annoys me that Ray Davies career slumped. I feel they were more creative and inventive than the Who. A fine set of songs in a jangle pop/rock mode. A tad twee but very British. It was compared to Tommy on release. I prefer this.
A well collated collection of acoustic songs that fit well together. Beautifully performed and produced.
Dark, beautiful and sad. Sparse and perhaps a little overwhelming in one sitting. One I will definitely return to.
Accomplished second album from band that rode the Britpop wave. Overlong but with inventive use of guitars. Needs more than one listen i think. Solid.
A beautiful neo-Soul album with elements of hip hop and reggae. She has an amazing voice and the production sits well. The album holds together thematically. Even the school talkie bits don't annoy me. Strong 4.
Well there you go, i thought H Nilsson wrote Everybody's Talkin'. Never heard of this guy. Not that fond really. Not keen on his voice and preferred Nilssons Everybodys Talking. Didnt like the 10 minute raga thing at the end Underwhelming
Elements of Led Zep, bit of Sabbath,, some grungy stuff. Loadsa massive riffs. Can't argue that Cornell has a great voice. A key 90s rock alt-album with a long running time. (77 min) and that feels too long. 3.5
Ok didn't think I was gonna like this but its pretty fly as they say. I feel that is Marvin Gaye was reborn he would make an album like this. Inventive soul/funk with different turns for every track. Like it a lot and and its not a genre I really listen to. 4
A live album. Her voice is amazing but her jazz trio is recorded way too far back in the mix. I find ithe over loud vocals quite off-putting as I want to hear the backing melody. A shame really. 2
Ummm. Solid Australian pub punk rock. Ramones vibes (especially from vocals). Unmemorable. 2.75
Wow, a personal favourite. Peak wilco. Joyous stuff. American with a bit of a ambient art rock edge. All signed off with Jeff Tweedys vulnerable vocals. Its a beautiful thing. 4 5
Classic heavy blues metal from my youth. Well above average. Loadsa vocal and guitar cliches but I guess thats what they are about. Relentless bad boy boogies.
Another solid set of songs from the glum duo. Some cracking singles especially Rent. A couple of the sings wash over me but its generally good and probable improves on replay
Mmmm OK. Lovely voice. Buuuuuttttt really lightweight insubstantial songs/grooves with few hooks and the interludes don't make it profound. Dont get it really. Underwhelming.
Love the Kinks and they rarely disappoint. There's a wonderful Englishness about them that sometimes feels a bit twee. Ray Davies voice has a wonderful vulnerability about it.
I've never got this band. Jason sings far too many woe is me lyrics and the delicate followed by the wall of sound seems too repetitive across the albums. Not for me
Bloody loved this and will explore the band more. Delicate chamber pop rock with invention. Great stuff.
Not sure why this Bollywood album was picked. Is it the greatest? I'm not an expert. Interesting but i would never play it again. Way too diverse. And a bit cheesy at times.
I love RH. This one has brilliant moments (There, There is my highlight) but there is baggage which makes it overlong. It also lacks the sonic thematic focus that makes OK, KidA, and especially Rainbows great. Could easily be a 4 but its a 3
Classic British metal id say... I saw them tour this album back in 82. Its tight and well composed. Distinctive twin guitars and Bruce's vocals. It owes a big debt to Sabbath. Not really my thing but I admire its craft.
I love the 4 "song" albums he made in the 70s. This is the last of the 4 and contains beautiful textures and contrasts that hold together as a whole. Thoughtful brilliant stuff. 4
Classic 70s Stevie Wonder. Funk, soul, guile, songs, politics and that voice. All great. Solid 4.5
Never heard this. Not as instant/commercial as Born to Run but its cut from the same cloth. Wholesome 'merican urban tales with muscular musical support and the Bosses throaty singing. Its unfamiliar after one listen (it demands more) but I think its pretty damn good. 4.3
Saw the Fall 4 times in 4 different decades. Always an interesting band. Chaotic at times. Never dull. For years I thought this, the debut was a live album! This pretty much sets a template for the future dozens of album. Very assured. It does what it does well.
This is a genre I like and I think would be brilliant on the dancefloor but in my house there is just too much similarity between tracks for me to gain interest. The drum tracks are especially unimaginative. Its a bit boring as a listening experience.
The second of IPs collaboration with Bowie ( though you be fair the DB album Tonight also has a lot of IP) and it shows. In not a massive fan of IPs drawl but there are some solid songs. As a student the Passenger was a indie disco mainstay. I feel it flags a bit on the 2bd side
Bit of a blues collaboration album that put some money in JLHs pocket. A tad overproduced but solid enough. A blues guitar album that doesn't break any ground.3
Thought I would like this but as the opener Roadrunner faded out the rest became a bit dreary and half arsed. Not impressed.
Very brass heavy cuban African jazz. It is intense and in your face. Can't think when I would ever play t except to annoy the neighbors.
I'm aware its one of their best and I really listened to it but its an endless tedious array of one dimensional power chords with that machismo directed vocals. Yeah, Sandman is a tune.
Well, if youve read some of my previous reviews you'd think I'd dislike this. 1. Intended for dance floor 2. Repetitive. 3 Over an hour long Wrong. Its bloody ace. 4
Yuk. One of those "change my mind moments." Never liked them. Never listened to a whole album. Here goes...Yeah no change. Hate the white boy funk swagger, dislike AKs voice. Lyrics are bollox. Guitarist is good. Massively overrated band.
We Kid A was intended as a double album. This is effectively Kid B. It is often seen as the runt Dublin but I think it is as good. Some electronic noodling and I know Thoms voice turns some people off. Essential 21st century music.
Thus was a compilation designed to boost their primotion/success in the UK so shouldn't be on the list so will be down marked. Fun throwaway indie band. Shouty and punky. Downvoted from 3 to 2.
Umm disappointing Sunday for a lazy Sunday...the title track is a banger as they they say. The rest depends into very lightweight cheezy pop. Insubstantial. 2
Old skool rap with a proto gangster styling. Prob shocking at the rime ( though not very sweary) better albums were to come from RDMC but this was historic i guess. 3
Self indulgent early-ish prog full of guitar and keyboard noodling. Several 10 min songs. Terrific jazz drumming. Gabriels offbeat lyrics and delivery. Obviously not for everyone. I was the music of my youth so can't be too harsh.
Iconic (only) album from the guy with the voice who died young. Overwrought at times, spectacular at others.A great set of songs with covers. It doesn't romance me the way it used to do but its still special.
The first 6 albums by LZ are all great. I find this one a little uneven but contains beautiful moments and more obvious standout moments.
Brilliant iconic album. Classic Dylan. Every track is great. A mix of electric (yeah) then acoustic. The more underlooked (by me) album that comes before the giants of Highway and Blonde. iconic album. Classic Dylan. Every track is great/good
Meandering chilled r'n'b much like a meandering Frank Ocean....which is no bad thing if you like that kind of thing. One of those I find tricky because its so out of my comfort zone.
Not a band I've explored in the past. Thought is was gonna be a bit Gang of Four but it underwhelmed a bit. Short punky sings with strong vibes/riffs but nothing really stuck in my head. A couple of songs that Elastica seemed to rio off.
Magnificent NT album that live/studio and acoustic/full band. Bookebded by Hey,Hey,My, My. In-between classics Powderfinger, Pocahontas Welfare Mothers. Brilliant stuff
Cartoon hip-hop that caused a fuss way back. Yeah maybe I'm a bit priggish but it doesn't amuse my and i just find it annoying. Hate all skits too. 2 for the guile of the production.
Yeah its fine but all a bit nice and underdemanding. I remember nothing after listening to it...but obvious guile has gone into writing these songs. Classic 3.
Fran is not Chris Martin lets be honest. Wishy washy indie with a couple of hits and a fortunate Glastonbury appearance. Now parked in the Where are They Now pile ?
Brilliant tight clear production. Some great songs. Classic disco. Not really my thing but clearly great.
Funky punky agit pop. A cut above the usual landfill indie that I feel I dismissed on its release. Solid album tracks beyond the singles. There is a genuine charm to this debut that I overlooked.
Pleasingly 79 psych throwbacks. 3 monster hits with epic riffs. Some of the the other stuff is a bit filler but I really like the vibe of this as it seemed so different at the time.
A more interesting rock/metal album from the 80s/90s with a vocalist i didnt totally love. One that needs more than one listen but I feel there are are some decent songs under the noise.
Lovely voice and production but its all a bit easy listening lounge music. Dull dull dull.
I album I love a lot. James sure does show his influences though. Bowie, Talking Heads, bit of Devo Their best album. It is that structured well and has an epic middle section. Strong 4.5
I like this but it just seems like a underpowered rehearsal for Loveless which I think is a 5 star masterpiece. This is the birth of shoegaze. So it may be a bit unfair to compare but hey!
Massivly accomplished album that arise during the Britpop era. Super smoothe production and ace songs with Ashcrofts resonating voice. It perhaps became a bit ubiquitous at the time but its a good album of pop rock.
Seems solid...however....not a genre I love. Contains way too much cursing and ...skits between songs. Never a good thing. A struggle to finish.
Brilliant live recording .and a great mix... does get a bit repetitive but enjoyable. Classic blues guitar.
I've always found TP a bit meh and this Heartbreakers debut is a bit Springsteen, a bit Steely Dan and a lot of meh.
Pleasingly produced classic Americana. There's something reassuring about the Band and this one of their best. Must explore more obscure stuff.
Well I normally hate 80s albums and Sade did get a bit of a reputation as coffee table/dinner party/wine bar music but you know its pretty fine. Her voice is great and the the production is not like s typical 80s album. 3.5
Its not Pet Sounds....some lovely high harmonies but it still in the bubblegum phase and it wears a bit.
Workmanlike. Washes over me a bit.
Laura Nyro is a blindspot in my musical knowledge. Initially came across as trying too hard and those constant tempo changes. However she has a brilliant voice and the production is ace... needs more than one listen.
Uninteresting US proto punk (pub rock) band. May be historically significant but not a great album.
Interesting debut album from JB with some OTT vocals from Rod S. Flamboyant heavy blues from JB which shows his expertise but the album lacks some focus.
EatB debut. I like this but Ocean Rain and Heaven up Here are better. Half way between Joy Division and the Doors(?) Macs voice is distinctive but the guitar of Sargeant is not fully formed.. Some strong songs but the best was yet to come.
Surprising muscular album from the C. (Whose discography I don't know apart from a few singles) This album was marked by the death of the keyboardist during its production. Echoes of classic Stones and Dylan. Decent.
Landmark debut from JH with a confidence and style. Guitae playing from another planet. Hey Joe Purple Haze, Wind Cried Mary. Still sounds fresh.
Angular shouty Punks vibes from the New York outfit....I don't totally love it but feel I should...maybe its the adoration from Pitchfork.
Wholesome C&W from a man and a guitar. Its a slightly ropey recording but I like the way he introduces each song. The 30 min experience just kinda washed over me but its always good to hear someone new. ( if you know what I mean)
Murky grungy guitar rock on a breakup theme...bought this 19 years ago because of its acclaim but didn't get it then either.
I saw Oasis in a tiny pub when their first single was released. They were crap. I feel warmer towards them now but they do magpie a lot of stuff. The swagger is good.
Jangle psychedelia from Robin Hitchcock outfit. Though this was gonna be one of my standard 3s but its pretty distinctive and I don't think there is s duff song on the album. 4
There's something about this album that reaches deep. The grimy textures and the late night feel. Always loved it.
Bono is a twat. However before they became stadium gods they made their greatest album with Eno. It is cinematic and is a highlight ( with the Pixies and Joy Division) of the eighties....I think the second side is greater. It is a bit pompous ar times but I feel it would be harsh to downgrade. I feel torn between 5 and 4.
They were always a live band and studio stuff always sounds a bit tame. Still its pretty pleasant soft country jangle rock. Lovely harmonies but all a bit bland.
Interesting and quite refreshingly diverse album. .swings from genre to genre which makes it a bit uneven but stimulating.
There is a charm to this rap album. Its feels so organic and reminds me of De La Soul. The balance of male/female vocalists is pleasing.
Late 50s early rocknroll. Culturally significant but itsxsll a bit twee. Doesn't do much for me
American poodle permed overproduced cock rock. Except they are from my home city of Sheffield in Yorkshire. Painfully awful. Utter shite. 1
Ignoring the fact that he was one hellova arsehole, this is an incredible piece of live rock n roll...it sounds edgy, the mix is great and the piano is brilliant. Spotify cuts it down from 37 to 22 minute so I feel a bit cheated. Strong 4
Spikey US heavy rock/punk with an edge of funk (but not in a shit RHCP way) It didn't do much for me but it was an interesting listen.
Expansive modern soul funk with occasional scat jazz and rap. Its that kinda album. Sge has a great voice. It meanders sometimes and pleasingly without gaps between tracks. The tunes are not always memorable but it doesn't always matter
I have listened to this album more than any other EVER. It is my bedrock. Electronica full of sun dappled childhood memories. Melodies that ache with nostalgia. Dream on. FIVE
I'm a big fan of the debut Lost Souls which has a woozy hypnotic feel. This follow up has some great moments but some of the slower songs feel a little tired in comparison. 3
Never heard this before but its a deep soulful fun rap album. The cuts/samples are lush soft and deep.. Its kinda a west coast rival to 3 Feet High and rising.
Yeeash.....this is dark, unsettling and to be honest difficult jazz. Its hard not to admire the ambition but that doesn't mean I love it. Its hard to penetrate (no tunes!) So will just give it a standard 3.
Absolutely fine. Never been a fane of RSs voice but essentially he's got the Faces behind him. Country rock n roll with a raw sound. Unlikely to play again.
Never got them. They are overly theatrical and almost too clever for the medium. They hit so many moods almost like a Queen album. Inventive but smug and irritating.
Blur in a more playful mood perhaps influenced by American indie. Not all the tracks work but at least they expanded their horizons a bit. Beedlebum and Song 2 open the set then it is a voyage of discovery. 3.5
Spacious funk episodes with bonkers lyrics. Hard to dislike but difficult to know when to play. Pleasingly no instrument dominates. Guitar, keyboards, brass all good on solo meanderings.
Its dense and long and probably needs several listens (which i can't give it). I adored Funeral and thought Neon Bible was v good. This however feels a bit laboured. That's probably a bit harsh. 3.5
Apparently DGs success meant Ed Shearan could emerge. So thanks for that! I dismissed this when it came out as a bit populist (I am a Snob) but its ok. Hus voice is decent and there is gome guile in tbe songwriting.
Never been a massive fan as u found him too dour however my son loved him and he has now passed away. On reflection it has a lot of soul. He weaves stories of mystery and yearning with sparse beautiful arrangements.
I think this is the 3rd RS album I've had...and its getting a bit tiresome....however this was the best so far. His voice still bugs me though.
Live primal US proto punk that has a reputation as an "inportant" album. (*which always makes me wary). Its fine, and the energy of the performance can be felt though the songs are not always great.
I always think the Who had a blessed career. The Kinks were better. Townshend is not a guitar God, Daltrey has a limited voice. (Moon was great though) The album projects were overblown. This is the only album I owned as a young person and is probably their best. (Full of offcuts i believe) A stronger set of songs.
Ummmm not my genre as I always say. Bit Kanye influenced. The production is very lush with strings.. his vocal delivery is very meh. Every track starts with a "uh" "all right" The Outro is tiresome.
Loose Southern Rock concept album about Alabama with lots a references to Lynyrd Skynyrd. And boy it's long. TBH I only heard the first hour but I'm sure the remainder was similar. I like the political slant but cmon guys it really does go on a bit too long....
Its more of a Bowie/IG joint album as he DB had a LOT of creative control on this one. Ddrug fuelled, influential and dark but not lovable. (For me at least)
Noise alert. Drum, bass and unintelligible shouting. Gotta admire the vision but its a nah from me.
There's a vibe, an attractive rhythm a overall vision. However thus is the 80s so is has that GODDAMN AWFUL PRODUCTION. AGGGHHHH...Take those drums away now.
Well, Waters is a asshole. Its the last great PF album. Its a bit overblown but it works as a concept. Gilmours guitar shines through the whole thing. There ard a lot of people that worship this but this but its not THAT good.
90s landfill indie. They obviously loved Wire cos they nicked some of their tunes.
Well I know where the Libertines got their shtick from now. Interesting power pop (proto punk?) that contains another Girl Another Planet. Languid vocals with strong backing.
The most musically lush of the 3 albums but I'm not sure the songs hold up as much. It is however pretty good (ignoring the fact that Mozzer is a twat).
Prob the greatest double album ever. Chock full of epic BD tunes at his peak. Brilliant.
Some interesting songs from the Genesis guy but I don't feel it holds together as a coherent album. Solesbury Hill and Flood are great tracks. He found his feet on later albums.
I've only heard the debut previously. This is a lot more radio friendly (as they say) Keeps the Beach Boys type melodies. Keeps the dour lyrics but drops the waves of hissing feedback. Pleasant.
My first TW album and I'm sure there will be more to come. I understand that TW has a consistent groove thing and I admire that, but it doesn't mean I like it. It puts me on edge and I suffer for his art. (Mostly because of his voice)
Fine album from SW. No massive hits on this one but it it oozes class and funk.
I find it difficult to criticize this without saying the word "twee" but it is. The first track (Nightflight) is the standout track but its all pretty solid folk.
I started off thinking this was quite interesting but it soon became a bit tiresome and overlong. Very white, bit funky, bit jazz, bit prog. All over the place really. Gotta admire the ambition though. I'm a Man is great.
Metal with a bit of a funk vibe (but not in a abhorrent RHCP way!) Front loaded with big tunes. The lead singer does sing down his nose a bit. I quite like.
Ok its a bit weird. Like a surreal hybrid of Sonic Youth and early Mercury Rev with an avant-garde MC. I remember them being played on the Peel show. Difficult to hate and love.
May have said this before but i bet it sounds great in a club....however in my car its its a but dull and repetitive. It (unlike, say, the first Aphex album) doesn't do enough to hold my attention. Disappointing. 2.5
She has a very special voice. The songs are sometimes a bit bland but the arrangements and production carry it through. But the voice....
Hard to fault tbh. Stairway, Rock'n'Roll, Levee, plus lots of lesser known tracks that are epic in different ways. 4.5
A bit of an oddity really ....it does sound like a soundtrack album. Not sure when I would want to play it but I see he went on to write soundtracks for real films so it was a bit of a gateway job application U guess. Sombre, dark and interesting.
As a spotty long haired youth i used to be a big fan but now I find them a cringingly spinal tappish combo. Gillan voice wears on me and Lords classical noodling seem to quaint. Still, if you buy one DP album this is the one.
I think I prefer Masters of Reality but this is a well crafted follow up with Iommis low tuned guitar which became influential with stoner bands of the future. Strong.
80 Scottish post punk jangle funk pop. Borrows from Talking Heads. Cohesively holds together with good sonic range. Its also good fun. Drag a bit towards the end but wholesome stuff.
The album where PG hits big. I'm not a massive fan of his faux-funk but its all sonically sound and holds together as an entity. Half the album are hits but i prefer more experimental stuff.
I picture them low down at a festival lineup while I line up for a shit vegan burger in the drizzle. US metal funk punk reggae. It doesn't really know what it is. The lead singer is able but too affected. Next
Its all very chilled in a 60s hippy way but I like the thematic consistency of the album. Not that memorable. Simple pleasing stereo production and the odd dodgy lyrics. 3.5
There's nothing quite like the CT and this, the 3rd album is pretty typical. They'd lost the punkyness of the first 2 and did the ethereal thing. Beautiful stuff.
I think its really easy to scoff at this. White guys going reggae. However the debut is not bad and its heart was in the right place. Later stuff was dogshit however. 3.
Strong second album from W. More Americana/alt-country than later ones. It sprawls a bit but its solid.
A fine album... I sometimes feel she pushes her voice too far but hey. Production fine and some enjoyable songs. Really like Bobby McGee.
Strong funk rock album with distinctive guitars. This band are a bit of blind spot in my musical knowledge but would listen again.
Low-fi US indie that reminds me of early Pavement and Guided by Voices. Fine but without the charm of either of those.
Massivly kitch and OTT operatic rock that is hard to take seriously but sold by the truckload through the 70s/80s/blouarara. Its like a stage musical (and that's where it ended up) 2.75
I'm surprised this has a rating over 3 tbh. I though it would alienate so many people. Masterful Latin heavy prog rock . Conceptual and the lyrics are mostly gibberish but but does it rock and hook and have drive and purpose. An utter force of nature. 4
The singles are ok and I quite like the African drum beat thing but tbh it is mostly a bit rubbish....(especially the pirate song.)
Love Wilco, like Billy B (though sometimes he sounds a bit flat) I find this a bit dreary though. Workmanlike and unmemorable.
Love this. The beats/samples are as cool as fuck and Q-Tips delivery is so laid back and in touch. Benefits from the early success of De La Soul and should have been as big.
A key album of the California flower power hippy psychedelia... it all sounds a bit dated. Love White Rabbit though.
Largely fine, couple of big hits....some predictable cheesy hippy tropes. Meh.
So many great tunes. I'm a bit of a sucker for this. At times it feels like a greatest hits.
I owned this one as a youth and loved the 20 min title track. I'm less fond now. The lyrics are ropey sci-fi guff and the tracks on the 2nd side feel mostly weak. (Though i like Something for Nothing) 3 for kindness.
Slightly proggy early album from EJ that contains everyone's favorite Tiny Dancer. If you like EJ you'll like it. It OK.
This is a quite dense affair that needs more than one listen. However Brett vocals overly dramatic vocals are a acquired taste no matter how many times you hear it . There are less Bowie-isns than the first album (which I liked)
Classic late 80s indie. Bjorn is there yelping her vowels. Some interesting rhythms. Bit of style over substance. Meh.
I find this really bland. Its all competent. Just dull.
Proggy and wholesome I'd say. Slightly put off as its Jeremy Clarksons fave album but it throws a lot of tunes on this album. Solid 3
An oddity. Bit proggy, bit like late Radiohead Very English. Almost whispered soft vocals. Its very dense and requires repeated listens. Unfortunately it doesn't win me over but I can see its attraction.
Love DB but I'm not a big fan of this "Plastic Soul" (DBs words) The two singles are great but Inbetween its a bit of a miss for me especially the Beatles cover.
80 Aussie post punk band that never really made it big. This later album doesn't really have any punk in it.s Its a tad over produced but earnest and sincere but not really doing anything for me. Strikes me as a bit of an oddity on this list.
Predictable review alert. Gotta admire the ambition. But despite few good songs, 3 hours ( which I didn't listen to) is too much. There is a lot of meh songs.3 hour 3 stars.
Interestingly sparse Cure album. Obv contains the full length classic A Forest. Otherwise there are some Eno type noodlings which perhaps leaves you a short changed on 35 min album.
I often gripe about production. This has 5* production...total credit to that dude. Tbh its a very listenable album. Some of the lyrics are a bit hokey and there are track (nobody's perfect) with a auto tune thing that i skipped. And American Pie was an execrable cover. Almost a 4.
Mmm... quite interested in this at the start....chill out electronica ...but the novelty soon wore off....especially that bloody accordion. Very French....very meh.
Gonna avoid genres here but this a wonderful dreamy Icelandic album that opened my mind and heart some 24 years ago. I've since seen them on 5 tours. Magical production glorious tunes and emotional heft. Head says 4. Heart says 5.
Never heard a Slade album but familiar with some of their 70s hits. Blues rock akin to some 60 Stones. Noddys vocals grate a bit. Couple of hits on the second side. Not that bad really.
Ah the Brian Wilson solo album.. Own it, haven't listened to for about 10 years. It is a beautiful masterpiece. Baroque pop with gorgeous production. Every track contains magic. 4.5
Oh God please don't make me listen to this again. I've just had Pet Sounds and I'm all chilled out. I've tried this twice in the past and it just annoys me. Ok here we go. Avant garde and chaotic and pretty much unlistenable. Hardest album to rate.
Enjoyable but the 2 big brilliant hits come 1-2 then you are left with quite a lot of ramblings which are not very satisfying. Interesting though.
Wow....Haven't been aware of this guy. This is brilliant. Reminds me a bit of Shuggie Otis. Great voice. 60s type production. Tunes. Ace.
Smoother and better crafted than previous PJH albums. Instrumentality and vocally less aggressive. It also holds together well as an album. So why don't I love it? No idea. 3
Always a great producer. He's also a dickhead. Debut album is full of decent tunes even if not a favourite genre of mine. I will always hate skits. Its. It's too long too.
This may be a bit of a sacred cow but it just sounds like like standard pub blues rock. The title track is a standout but otherwise very meh. EC is a cracist twat anyway
Yeah. Washes over me tbh. Not helping that he is a convicted under age rapist.
Classic 2nd album of the grumpy old goat NY....not on Spotify of course...lols Cowgirl in the Sand and Down by the River. Fine fine album...
On the day that Astrid died I get the wonderful Getz/Gilberto album. ( Astrid is uncredited) that launched her career. Brilliant summer vibes. Shimmering trumpet/piano with salsa vibes.
Solid anxty heavy rock with great vocals from Skin. There isn't really a stand out track with hooks and its not really a genre I like. Hard to be critical though.
Simple irish punky pop much beloved by John Peel. Short snappy working class songs about young love and council estates. Largely forgettable but to the point.
Is this a compilation? Half of it is missing from Spotify. What I hear i like...old style boogie woogie early rocknroll..
Mixed feelings about this one. Its kinda genreless which is good.. its a rap-funk-rock crossover but not in a RHCP shite way.. The debut is stronger. But I'm not won over by the songs but I kinda admire it . Second half is weaker.
I'm a bit hit or miss with LR albums. This one leaves me cold (not because of the dour lyrics) It's so lacking in inspiration. Thank God it was appended to a single album.
Always a cult band for the indie community. Its ok guitar rock.
Kinda love this band. The tunes are subtle but strong and all handgs together well. Not that chock full of hits but it doesn't really matter.
Well it's got the voice and the tunes. It also has a 80s production that really sucks balls and I find it really hard to get past.
I like PS. His voice is soothing and the music is not bland. His lyrics are always a bit quirky though the "Cars" song is a bit of a stinker.
Ok never listened to TS album. Its all very proficient and expertly produced and snappy but its all a bit sanitized. 3
Quite a few sniffy Americans not liking this but its pretty fine. There are enough hooks and the songwriting is fine. Hus voice is distinctive.
Triple album alert! Goes on way too long. Would have made a much tighter double. (Especuslly when tracks are repeated) There some good tracks but there are fillers too. Muddy production too.
I think this is my second FK album and I may have given the last one a 3. This one is just brilliant. It's also live (duh!) and the recording is ace. Intoxicating rhythms Quality Afrobeat. 4
I went into this album open minded but must admit I'm not a massive metal fan. I find it totally ridiculous in a Spinal Tap way. A stupid venture in all areas. 2
Thought i was gonna be a bit dismissive about this but it really is quite charming in its scope as a small scale concept album. Hard to fault even for someone who doesn't like any kind of rap/grime whatever. Wholesome
3rd album of proficient punk from TD. More musical and organized than you'd think from their media antics. (Remember them smashing up the Whustle Test studio promoting this album) Quirky power pop.
Top glam. Feels a bit lightweight at times but highly distinctive.
A long album that grieves the recent loss of his son. It was always going to be a difficult listen.
I own this in CD (not on Spotify) and really want to like it but I can't get past JMs vocal delivery which really grind my gears. That's all really. 3
Classic BM.
Quality album from CCR. Chocka vith big tunes. Humble and God affirming. Solid 4
I like some DS but this screams lowest common denominator and 80s kitch. Pop pap rock which is is a bit lazy at times. Catchy but banal.
Thus band massively suck. Overrated massively. American white boy funk rock really pisses me off. 2.
Iconic, essential, desperate, sometimes difficult to listen to. Prob the greatest post punk album. Easy 5
Great production. Songs just wash over me. And I hate the drearyness.
Classic 70s Dylan. And probably his last 5 star album. A joyous album of tales with tunes to match.
Never been a fan of EC; I find his vocals really grating. I did however like it more as I progressed through the album.
Yeah...despite the inventiveness of some of the album (Hello Stan), it is just lyrically unpleasant. The album also wears and is way too long.
I'm aware this is a bit of a sacred cow of 90s uk indie but it could do with a couple of tunes or hooks in the songs. Lots of morose suicidal lyrics do not make a great album. Not for me.
Its all fine but a bit bland. The 3 voices are great and it holds well as an album. The songs all seem to be about relationship troubles. Twang twang yeaaaah. Country.
Slightly wet peace folk rock song that moves past pleasantly but with lo lasting memories. Harmless...A lot of Js have been smoked to this i bet
Hypnotic and brilliant in its execution. I feel silly that this music exists but I never exposed myself to it. Joyous
30 years and holds up really well. I normally dislike US funk metal but this is a true original and inovator. It rocks hard...
Long time since I've heard this one. Its a bit like Daft Punks dirty sister. The beats are pounding and tbe distorted synths wear after a while. 3
The album that got me into SS. I have an emotional bond with it so its hard to be objective. Its long and possibly overreaching but is passionate orchestral indie folk that drives deep. 4
Really don't like this at all. Pompous overblown almost like a series of failed Bond theme songs. She has a great voice but the material/arrangements suck. 2
Fine album that's fine but not as good as the 2 albums that follow. Doesn't feel that cohesive.
80s US indie that does that doesn't do that much for me. Angular guitar rock with female vocals. Not terrible but doesn't move me
An album of proficient guitar blues.
Its all all about the riffage. Apparently its an important album in Genesis of grunge and shoegaze. Noise indie rock lacking some tunes.
Not everyone's cup a tea the Dan. I'm very fond and this has some cracking tunes but doesn't hold together as a album as well. Very good though but its no Aja or Scam.
Quite inspirational music really. Its a culture shock yeah but what they do they do really well. I have no scale to measure how this compares to "lesser" sufi music so I have to be trusting !
I dont really understand the inclusion of this. Its not awful but very predictable and dull and contains tired disco/dance tropes. And Daft Punks Discovery is not in???!!! 1.5
Not bad. I know he's rather overrepresented on this list but this list but I like several of his tunes despite never loving his voice. (Joni Mitchell Syndrone) Decent but I don't like him.
Slightly twee Ausie indie ..one of those that prob needs more than one listen. You don't get it. 3
Ok i guess. Love opening track Memphis but Hunters slurry affected vocals annoy me after a while. I don't have the love that Bowie had!
Clash debut. Prob more important than the Sex Pistols tbh. Songs and attitude. Strong 4
Its all a bit clean for my tastes. Interestingly I listened to some Crystal Castles before this and much preferred it Disappointing but OK
I know this one polarized people it doesn't me. Love the scope, love the guitar sound. Some ace tracks. However. His voice, that Cartman whine is difficult. Its also 2 HOURS. It would make a really good single album.
Yeah its ok. Early bluesy RS but its difficult not to raise an eyebrow at lyrics of Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb.
I've heard several Byrds album and found them a bit jungle jangle dull. Never heard thus and its really good. Will play again. Enjoy your 4 !
Debut FF album and nice guy D Grohl writes and plays it all. A bit dull and repetitive. Nice guy though. 2nd album should be on here instead of this.
Top level Kinks where they become slightly music hall but maintain classic songwriting. Highly underrated IMO. Waterloo Sunset finishes the album.
Ok I'm a bit torn here. Different and adventurous. Self indulgent and written on drugs. A difficult listen if not high. A 3 straight down the middle.
Fine album of singer songwritery workmanship with those harmonies of different egis pulling in diff directions. Our House is well twee and others mark the end of the 60s and Vietnam etc.
Like a lot. Pastoral, downtempo. Hints of Vashti Bunyan and 70s folk. It washes over a bit but I like the ride.
Yeah. Labdmark US new wave. It ticks ticks lots of boxes. Distictive. It's got that motorik tempo and part surf. I just don't find it very lovable. Maybe its the "humour"
Its ok but dull. Its kinda elevator-bland at times and this genre is approached much better by Herbie Hancock or Weather Report. Saved by the extended title track. 2.5
Really.? Bullshit boring rap album that does nothing new. Even the beats are dull. Ememem can't save it Unfathomable.
Ok ... I've it when world music comes up. Sounds fun. Not really my thing but respect given.
Better than I expected (and I didn't know is was so early in the decade) Decent guitar rock/pop with attitude.
Bought this on CD at least 20 years ago and never really got it. The backing tracks are very TH. The overlay of found voices may have been very original back then. Dont really find it an enjoyable listen.
Yeah. Nothing really wrong with it. Its long and just became a bit saney after a while and I got a bit bored. His 8/12 album so very earnest. Sounds a bit harsh but hey...
Written while Macca was depressed from the Beatles break up. IT IS mostly collection of underworked so-so songs with the massive exception of Maybe I'm Amazed. (Which is awesome though there are better versions)
Wow. I think I've just discovered a new favourite band. This does wear its influences on its sleeve with a bit of Dylan, Bruce and Wilco. Its ace. Laid back tuneful tracks with some Eno noodlings. Take a 4 my friend.
Heard this a lot when it was released. Pros The voice. The hits Not that 80s sounding. Cons Some tracks a bit bland.
Front heavy with hits. I find it all a bit meh and superficial. Maybe I've heard Mr Brightside too many times. I don't think it will go down in history as a classic.
I like CCR a lot they have a raw naturalism. (...and obv much better than the Eagles man) Whoa that sounds pretentious. The long tracks in this tend to run a bit too long. Safe 3
Meh...bubblegum pastiche Beatles half arsed twaddle. Is this on because they started to write their own songs? Lame
Not a fan of this band. Saw them on whe Plug in Baby was released. Feels like something Queen fan would like. I mean I like some 70s prog but this just sucks at times. I think it his voice and stupid lyrics (Some times I admire it) Go away.
Time to dust off the CDs. I'm a NY fan but I find this one a bit uneven especially with the 2 orchestrated tracks. Some classics but not in his 10 best IMHO.
Slightly quirky agit punk pop with sparse production. Few hooks. May need more than one listen but it won't get it. Left me a bit cold.
Shouty US fem punk rock. Strong in most areas TBH. It's just not my thing so find it hard to judge/compare. Washes over me.
Landmark rap album which is heavy on melody and humour rather than bitches and motherf*ckers. Intelligent samples and bears repeated plays. Gameshow skits are bearable. Gives me a lot of warm vibes.
I'm a big fan of NY but had really forgotten about this one. Its top tier.
I was aware that Miss Twigs was a big thing 10 years abmgi but u never dipped my toe in her. (Ermmmmmm..) Anyway its a bit Bjorn with Kid A glitch. It washes over a bit but interesting.
Peak Stones. Everything seems to work. Dodgy lyrics on Brown Sugar.
Groundbreaking turntablism. I can't think of anything like it. Majestic.
Yea.....more hip hop i like .... thoughtful intelligent beats and lyrics that bears repeated listens. Smooth.
I'm a big fan of IH. Hot Buttered Soul is epic. This is mostly instrumental but hits all the right spots with the Bar-Kays brass shining through. Indulgent but essential.
Double album....always tricky. 18th album by SW. Run out of ideas? Utterly brilliant. Inventive, tunes, production, politics, voice. Genius. Have a 5.
Ok thought I was gonna hate this but his delivery is so smooth and the (Dre) production is so slick. On the minus side tbe short in-between skits ate tiresome and the lyrics (though they seem a pastiche of themselves?) are wearing.
Super smooth classic disco. The upbeat tracks work a lot better than the slow ones.
This gets a lot of hate i see. The flutes are a big mistake (and Nico hated them) and once you accept her flat voice it becomes a sad chamber folk album that hits a spot. 3.5
They are a hard band to dislike. It is sometime a bit too nice and an overreaching desire to create anthems but otherwise its all fine
Landmark US punk deut album which to be honest is a bit dull and flat though I guess was ahead of its time. Sorry guys. A O Let's go. (...and review something more interesting...)
Difficult really. My ear is not tuned enough to appreciate this really si I'm not going to fawn or be negative. More than 15 mins is a difficult unless its subliminal in the background. Skillful though.
Often stated as some rap breakthrough album. Production is really nice. Lyrics are are still half arsed and offensive. Disappointing.
I know this well. Its kinda a big warm hug but listening objectively it is a bit bland. It doesn't match the best Dan and they are a 4.
Overhyped lager rock. Never a fan. Swagger does not equal greatness. There are a couple of good tunes but a I don't get the shtick and it ain't a masterpiece.
A monster of progressive trance. Moody and mighty. I feel if one Underworld should be chosen this iscthe right one. Sounds even better at night.
Garage psychedelia. Holds together well as an album.
Like MD but prefer the loosed extended jams where keyboards and guitar became integral to the sound....this is solid though.
70s instrumental program epic which tbe Virgin empire was built on. Some bits are a bit sketchy.
Landmark jazz album that kicks. A symphony of brilliance.
U.S. pop punk which was influential for the next 19 years and broke away from the grunge scene. Hard to dislike though not really my thing.
It was ok at times. Very Grateful Dead at times. Some of side 2 reminded me of late Doors.Long live jams but I'm not sure it merits being on the list.
Probably the greatest Cure album and it is a mighty thing. Sparkling, gloomy exhilarating, echoes of early New Order.
Brilliant dancefloor that (unlike many others) works well at home. Inventive and excellent production.
I'm a big admirer of KW and this is not the best as side B does not match the brilliance of side A so it all sounds a bit uneven. Revolutionary stuff though and their first classic. 4.
In not a fan of her vocal acrobatics and this double album seem to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks...There is too much to take in really and I guess her centre stage voice holds it together (a bit). Not for me
Nu-metal, rap-metal. I would like thus if u was younger but it just comes across as ranting kids with guitars and turntables. It is melodic at times and I remember the hits.
Interesting post punk off shook from the Buzzcocks that is remarkablely flamboyant at times.
Shouty doomy nonsense.
Not a metal fan but do admire the groove and proficiency.
Jolly Britpunk/pop by teenagers. I find it a bit insubstantial.
Masterpiece post-punk double album and the peak of the Clashs career. It's their Physical Grafitti (That would annoy them!)
AW debut and set a template for her short career. Louche and sexy. It holds together well as an album.
Neo-Donovan type stuff. Floats over leaves little impact.
Didn't think I was gonna like this but was pretty entranced. Will I play again prob not. Great voice, unusual opening track and sometimes I hearThom York.
Not a fan. Really dont like his French Jacque Brel style voice.. It really bugs me and the stream of songs about sex just irks me.
Short angular dirty grooved funk rock. Bit like Talking Heads dirty uncle.
Peak era Fall with repetitive riffs while MES squarks over the top. Joyous and single minded. Not my fave from the extensive discography ("Wonderful and Frightning") but still good
And at last a 80s album i like. Mostly (there are some dodgy handiclaps in there)Tunes (4 massive hits) and its got those orchestral bits linking stuff together. 3.75
Not this guy again! This is better. The production is immaculate as usual. Lyrics are mostly gobbledygook
Clunky uninspired dance album. A peculiar choice when there are so many candidates.
Lightweight pop dance crossover with a lot of half-arsed filler. Underwhelming.
Its ok I guess. Its a bit twee at times. I can see the Ray Davies influence. Its been revisited by critics and considered a classic but meh.
Overblown theatrical rock from a band I've never loved. I just don't get their swing of styles from metal to cabaret "Now I'm here" rocks though. 2.75
Quirky electro pop that lives or dies on her pixie childlike voice really. I'm ok with it mostly and it is unmistakable. I prefer the upbeat ones.
US proto blues metal. They're no Sabbath! However I like the narrow vision of basic hard blues. Bet they were great live
Strong blues Doors album and prob their best.
Not really a genre appeals to me but he has a great voice. This 'neo soul' just wishes over me.
Depends on how much you luke the flute i guess. Inventive melodic folk prog rock. Very livabke
Lounge downbeat triphop which is kinda ok.
I like Can a lot. They are hard to catalog. This one rarely comes out as their best but is probably their prettiest and most ethereal. The vocals often seem too far back in the mix. Lovely at times.
Honky tonk C&W. Can't really think of a genre I would dislike more. However its short and well produced. Not for me but a 3 down the middle.
Iconic Afrobeat. 2 tracks. 25 mins total Hard not love. 3.75
I know this one came first but musically I prefer the San Quentin prison album. However its still epic and his voice is immense.
Fine funky album by GM. I like how he allows the tracks to become longer to express his music
Slightly experimental album where NO put a foot in the dance scene. Sounds a bit dated and it lacks some decent tunes.
Peak 70s prog. I imagine this is a difficult album for many but this sits together well with the aggressive violins and Wettons distinctive vocals. 3.5
I want to like Bjork but this often just puts me on edge. Its experimental and I admire what she's done but its too much for one sitting.
Beloved less raw 2nd album from US indie darlings . Think I'm going soft but this gets a 4.
Jingle jangle guitar...sweet sounding vocals. Wishy washy songs. I'm getting a bit tired of Byrds albums. I must have had 4 or 5.
New band for me. (I knew about the eyeballs) Avant Garde? Its pretty terrible.
Above average rap album. Sorry thats all Ihave to say
Thumping dance rock rave hybrid thats not as good as the follow up (Fat of the Land) but contains Poison and Voodoo People
Wacky whimsical, dated annoying.
Not a bit fan of this genre but this held together well.
Loved it as a youth. Still love it. Still find Moby Dick a bit tiresome. Generally rifftastic. 4
Competent but clichéd hair rock.
I love Nick Drake though some of the orchestrated bits are bit shmaltzy.
Classic. Yellow Submarine sucks but it can't have a 4. 4.75.
Yeah. Its alright. I've never really understood the appeal of this band. His voice is pleasingly distinctive. Some of it washes over me.3
Thie very successful/lucrative country/rock hybrid of this band always sounds a bit cheesy to me. This (debut) is OK though. Prefer Creedence.
That old miserable bloke VM sounds sprightly here with plenty of the ol Celtic soul. Nice, though not as good as the more looser Astral Weeks. Imo
Very English classic album that not enough people know.
Never listened to this band before but aware they were part of the Seattle grunge scene. This doesn't have that sludgy sound. Full of interesting fuzzy riffs. Decent
Classic and iconic. The inspiration for a million other bands. The songs swing in tone from sweet to harsh yet it all seems tonaly together. Lou Reed is at the heart. 4.5
Landmark jazz album that as cool as fuck as they say.
This album was the bridge between the early synth pop success and the later sprawling jazz post-rock albums. Its more of the latter though. Delicate emotional stuff. Strong 4
ESs last album before his early death. Less acoustic but still delicate and gentle.
Some bits of this i like but they are outweighed by the cod fake reggae and roots songs that are cringeworthy at times. Not for me.
Perfectly fine though I think I was expecting a bit more. Funk soul with decent production but no killer tunes.
Tiresome, repetitive, dated. It has aged very badly. Its like listening to the Fresh Prince for a hour. Did not enjoy.
I'm not a fan but I've heard Ohio and that was harder. Coyple of tracks I liked, others were unmemorable. Love the drumming and those distinctive guitar squeals.
I know this is regarded as a classic... but.... Voice, production, mood, consistency all 5 star. But is does need a couple of tunes that I might remember. No? Its almost ambient. Maybe I need a lie down.
Jeez this is a hard listen. A bit like Brecht. Enough said.
High grade 80 electropop. Mick Karn's fretless bass and Sylvians vocals make this very distinctive
I like this era of MD but do feel it sprawls and is less focused that 'In a Silent Way' Its still pretty magical though.
Massive fan of Sandy Dennys voice. Some lovely moments.
Found this much more engaging than I thought. Decent rock album with no pretences.
Wow this gets a lot of hate in reviews. Its pretty decent singer songwriter stuff with good production. It doesn't breat new ground but if REM (which it resembles a bit) made it, it would sell in the millions.
Not a massive fan of JK solo but on reflection contains some decent songs. The title track sucks.
Pretty fabulous really. Not a fan of the skits. Love the reinvented covers.
I really want to like Bjork...and her music is diverse but it doesn't matter what music goes on behind I can't get her vowel twisting vocals that seem alien to the melody behind. Sigh.....
Yeah he was a bit odd....but lots a great songs, amazing production. Classic I guess.
Refreshing succinct British rap. No skits. 35 mins. Not my chosen genre but fine
Heard this before as its always had some legendary status. Its OK but I dont really understand the love. Couple of great tracks on the 2nd side but meh.
I confess I'm a massive fan. Hard to judge with distance. AS debut some of which he wrote when he was 14/15. Not ambient but thoughtful elecronica. Landmark stuff from a genius
I think finally I've seen the light with SW. I've tried before and it washed over. Today the commute was enriched by the guile and power of this album. Strong 4.
Bad eighties goth. Awful repetitive drum machine programming and Eldritch sounds like a panto villain. Give me Bauhaus any day.
Above average funk pop album. 3.5
Post hard-core classic im told. I like the dexterity more than the shouty vocals but thats me.
Too long. Too many shit skits and interludes. Some filler tracks. Stupid misogyny. Overwise really good. (Lol) /s
I know there is a bit of a (US) backlash about the amount of Britpop on here but this is quite bold and distinctive. There are obvious Bowie influences but it holds together well.
Quute like a few songs on here. As ever with EC the voice is my problem. It just isn't a pleasing experience.
Space folk jazz anyone. Much beloved album from JM which I like but don't love. Its seems so lightweight and unfocused (cept May you Never) maybe that's the attraction.
The only GD album I own. I find the studio albums a bit underwhelming but this (especially the first disc!) Is joyous. A band that feels each other in performance.
Ok. Never heard before and I predicted i would be critical of the length and skits and filler material. Its all pretty good. Much impressed.
I have to admire the diversity on this album. Its goes jazzy and proggy ar times. That said, it doesn't do much for me.
Acoustic African blues. I love the repeated riffs. It is masterfully chilled and beautiful. Will explore more. Also didn't feel like an hour of music.. 4.4
Iconic MG album that oozes class.
The singles are great but a lot of the rest seems a bit half arsed. Stings voice irritated me and the cod-reggae thing sounds very dated
Interesting US hardcore...with twiddling bits. Worth another listen.
My 2nd JM album in a couple of weeks. Don't like the jazzy/dubby feel ti this one. Hasn't dated well.
Even better the Folsom Prison. I like how they had the faith to leave a lot of the dialog in. Great songs, amazing atmosphere.
A hyped album that was good. Overloved by the British music media but it does everything right. Songs, production, stripped back playing. Strong
Fine album of thoughtful twangy rock before they came mega famous.
Bollox soft rock from unpleasant guy. Wet lazy stuff. 1.5
Three is a lot to like about this album. Production is satisfyingly bright. Vpice is good. Decent songs. It just needs a bit of an edge. Its all a bit nice even when singing about despair.
Great voice and production. But is seems to be a collection of non-songs that rely on voice/production to do the heavy lifting. Sorry Bey. No for me
Quirky adventurous Welsh indi pop thars diffucultvyi dislike. a joy at times
Perhaps the ultimate Britpop album. I like the diversity and experimental bits. I dont like the geezer thing or tbh Albarn's vocals. 3.5
Will be much better on the dancefloor but it doesn't do much for me on my sofa. I like the hits but it generally sounds a bit faux. 2.75.
Love the voice. Obviously got the epic monolith of "Nothing Compares" Otherwise the songwriting is a bit slight. I think it would have gone under the radar without the big one.
I'm not a country fan but there is something warm and vulnerable about this. Will explore more.
One I owned long time ago and it still sends shivers down my spine. Unpleasant at times. Brutal anti-rock that feels edgy. Big fan. Also....just a thought....is there a bit of late King Crimson in there. No? OK. As you were......4.5 Brutal and fucking ace.
Dark strange angular Gothic. Post punk and inventive. Like a lot. See the eighties did create good albums 3.75
I should like this more than I do. All about my home city and he's a great guy. Its all a bit maudlin. The Ocean is solid 5/5 though.3 5
Not a Eagles fan. Its all a bit too American. I can see why they were massive but it doesn't tick my boxes. Cheese. 2.8
Umm. Space sitar psychedelic rock. Interesting. I can't decide whether its better or worse with the 2 covers...
SR was almost a symbol of abuse way back. Safe 80s funk with a couple of hits. The pint sized ginger guy has a voice but its all so nice. Not a fan of the Heaven cover.
I like this. Its fun but not world stopping. Breezy Scorsese rock/pop/blues. Its like the Coral with sax. Fresh and honest.
80s albums come out very low in my rankings. I owned this one and love lots about it. The ethic the songs and I think it holds together well as a album. Go Sheffield. 3.75.
Twee eccentric stuff. You gotta be in the mood for it. Acoustic sitar with thingy noise and odd song structure.
Nothing special US post punk hardcore. Unremarkable.
Largely dull 2nd album from Britpop indie Verve. History is ok. Most songs have the same rhythm and are too long.
Mid era Beck which has some echoes of a (slightly more sophisticated) Odelay jumping from genre to genre. Decent.
She has a beautiful voice and some of the arrangements are lovely however nothing is memorable.
Never fell for this stupid cock rock. Is it supposed to be ironic? Ridiculous voice. Comedy value.
Uk garage rock revival. Not a fan of those scratchy guitar and ropey songs. Lots of UK hype for the druggy antics. Meh ...Thank God the Arctic Monkeys came along soon after.
Its fine. Her voice is very lovely. Laid back ekectro beats. Similar tempos All the scenarios I imagine it playing are in tbe background which is not that flattering.
Terrific 2nd album by BS. Smashes on side A. Lesser known but excellent tracks on B. Birth of metal. Rifftastic. 4.5
Jazz for people that don't like jazz...maybe. Feels a bit bland and dated at times. Amazing bass playing.
Never listened to a BJ album and kinda loved this. Storytelling through engaging songs. It just works. 3.75.
This one seems to polarize people and Americans don't get it. Very Essex. The guy is a poet and his band are really tight. Quirky groovy fun.
A great debut album. Very distinctive. Tremendous brass. A couple of hits. I much prefer it to his gypsy folk stuff that came after I realize his voice will alienate some.
Mmmm. Like most TW I can't decide if its genius or just terrible. I'm certainly not in the mood for the cod drunken rambles in some pseudo jazz club. Maybe if I was bleary eyed I would appreciate it. 10am on a bright Saturday morning doesn't work.
Shouty angular us punk. Sounds ok. Will never play again. Short!
VMs Celtic soul classic. Holds together brilliant as an album. The acoustic bass shines through as do Van's vocals. Lovely.
Fun ingenious sample heavy musical travelog.
Spotify being an ass on this one. Seems to hit a sweet spot of country ricj psychedelic groove. Bit twee at times.
Cool jazz trio. I washes over in a pleasant way.
Great voice, so-so songs. Not keen on all the synths.
Decent songs and arrangements. Lovely voice. Country vibes.
I love Portishead though I feel the famous debut is the weakest of the 3 albums. Moody electronica with a torch singer.
Kraftwerk had a brilliant run of albums in the 70s. Thus is one of them. Way ahead of its time and beautiful.
Know a couple of tracks of this bit never listened tobthe whole thing. It holds together well but it is not a sound that draws me in. Influentisl and heavy
I admire the ambition of this album. I read and remember the accolades it recieved. It has an aura of greatness. It is distinctive and original. However. I don't like it much and God I've tried.
Hard to rate as it's so (too) long and tbh i listened to the best of on Spotify. The voice is magical but its all a bit nice.
I could be really snobby about this coke addled album but it is a great collection of songs produced well. I'm a bit of a miserablist so I'm gonna say that "Oh Daddy" is a bit naff. 4
Yeah its one of those albums that every grown up indie kid is supposed to like. But is a bit of a slog of uninteresting music behind a poet throwing religious imagery around. Mmmm...3
Magical 80s album that hits all the right spots. Heartfelt tuneful and memorable.
.Much underrated band with excellent run of electro pop albums.
Pleasant poppy yacht music. Recent so I raise an eyebrow. Meh.
I wanted to call this bland and dull but its pretty good. She has an amazing voice and writes a decent song.
I know Nick Drakes 3 albums very well. He is brilliant. I was going to give this a 4 as it is a bit dour and v short. However it is staggeringly good. Five.
I have a nostalgic love of prog and didn't expect this here. Like Meddle and 2112 the second side seems inconsequential. (Though lovely couplet "Why did he lose/six million Jews"!) I'm not a massive fan of ELP. Everything revolves around Emerson indulgent keyboards. (Though I love Lakes voice) Not even for me. 2.5
I know there are a lot of EC albums on here and on all I will say his voice grates on me a bit. This debut has some spikey pop songs released at the birth of punk. It washes over me a bit.
Shoegaze central... Its all a bit murky and muddy and just doesn't hit like Loveless. Could do with better production. 3
Debut from the Captain. Swamp rock mayhem that sounds way ahead of its time.
Often cited as a British classic. You've been fooled. It opens with 3 bangers and finishes with a piece of brilliance. Inbetween there is a lot of meh. Wake up! Great at times but massively flawed. 3.5
Was expecting this to be a bit meh.. but this has won me over a bit. The NY songs rise above the others but the variety and production are excellent. 4
Classic DB album fro the Berlin/Eno trilogy. It oozes class even though the record company initially hated it. A couple of the 2nd side mood pieces sag a bit. 4.2
Prob their best album. Lovely sondwriting and production. Dont like Sidewinder.
Essential ground breaking hip hop. 2nd by PE. It still sounds fresh. Yeah boyyyyyy.
I think I've finally found a Bjork album that I can tolerate.
For my sins I only discovered this about 5 years ago. It has immaculate production. It is close to God at times. Yeah, the spoken bit on side 2 goes on a bit too long but it IS a album of indulgence. Can only be a five...
New to me. Kind of modest jazz with electinuca ans years. It hels my attention and reminded me of recent Floating Points.
Bit torn on this one. I think its good well produced pop album. However she thinks her voice is better than it is. The album is a bit scattergun and it's way too long.
It's fine. It's not really my thing. The recording is good. Washes over me a bit.
Sprawling drum'n'bass album that grinds its own groove. Accessible but I can see how some people find it a bit indigestible.
It's OK. I know Silent Shout by the Knife and I think that is similar but superior. Mood pieces that rely on the vocal line but often lack any kind of riff/tune.
This one is always going to alienate people. Slightly mad and one side that is just "sounds" I love the sometimes shambling nature of this band. Halleluwah is magnificent (especially the drumming) Strong
Wanted to dislike this and tbh I found them a bit bland but there is a grudging respect deserved to them. The songs are good....it just needs a bit of fizz.
I realise they are influential but it feels way too long as the songs tbh seem a bit unmemorable. A long time ago I saw Bob Moulds follow up band Sugar. And they were a bit dull too.
Massively underapreciated punk album. Highly listenable. Up there with first Clash album and Bollocks.
Upbeat, fun and sometime slightly wacky hip hop dance thing. Not for me.
Wanted to like this more. It's interesting but overproduced and over complicated at times. Chucking the kitchen sink at things isn't always a winning formula. Title track is ace though.
Debut from S&B. Lots of scratchy guitar and surprising mature. Good production too. Her voice is a bit Marmite and the sings are not that memorable.
50s harmonic folk that tells stories. It's all fine and good though I would never choose to play it.
I don't know what you think of this one. Seems almost too tender after the rawness of Loaded. Some lovely moments but I feel a bit empty after a listen. Prob needs another listen.
Technically brilliant I'm sure but I was well bored by the third song. Samba/Salsa heaven if you like that kinda thing. THREE!
Cheesy C&W that does the usual stuff the songs are string and it held my attention on my commute.
Didn't like it when it came out. Still think it's a bit lightweight. 2000s sci-fi rock electro indie. It's all a bit wet. 2
This probably needed more than one listen but it didn't get it. Nothing grabbed me though it all seemed very workmanlike. Chamber pop.
It all comes down to the voice really. I'm not a big fan of that creaky thing she does. Production is not great either. Couple of cracking songs
It's good but not great. It's too long. All the hits are in the first 15 mins then it's a way of attrition with those bloody vocal harmonies.
Never been a Who fan. Massively overrated. Quite polite the concept here but it would get annoying like skits on rap albums. Meh... 3
Not a band I warm to. Priduction is good. Bonos emotional wailings put me ofcedge a bit. They started to get more interesting when they worked with Eno
Thought this was going to be a grind to listen to but there were several tracks that turned my head. Enjoyable dirty rock.
Hello Youtube. I'm not a big fan of JM (its the voice....Blue does nothing for me) but I feel the jazzier ones fit her style better. (Though the jungle one is a bit grim)
Wow this gets a lot of bad reviews although I came awW without remembering any tunes. The extended soul/funk/rock track give a good vibe. 3.5.
Sheer class JB early and live. Electric what a time to be alive. (though a rough recording.)
I find this band very hard to get excited about. What's the deal ?
Technically sounds great. But I was very bored. Its just so lacking in charisma charm, guile.
Early UK punk? I see it been retrospectively given accolades that rank it alongside the Clash s/t and "Bollocks" I say no. It's ok but just a bit of unremarkable pub rock.
The influential debut which began that bedwetter indie genre. Delicate and lovely at times. I don't think it breaks new ground. It's a nice thing even though it had its haters.
Always really disliked this band so hard to be objective. Dislike the dampness the genre hopping, the harmonies, even May's guitar tone....and I really hate B. Rhapsody. Yuk. Can't give it 3.
Seems great. I don't listen to massive amount of jazz but this seems bloody good.
Very 60s. Very whimsical but a tad annoying especially on side 2.
Never listens ti this band before but the guitarist is really good and there's something about the sing structure and production that caught my ear. Will explore more.
Historically important but intrinsically a bit repetitive and vacant.
Bought this when it came out. It's a strange experimental mix that just works. I thought it would possibly date but it still works. Strong.
It's OK you know. He's always an interesting guy but I don't feel the need to listen to it again. Think I miss some early Ehite Dtripes rawness.
Bland.
Nice voice. Dull unimaginative songs though I'm probably in an Irritated mood. Randomizer. Stop giving me country albums. Yesterday Dwight Yoakum today this. YOU ARE PUSHING ME OVER THE EDGE......STOP NOW!!!!!
Not really. This is dark enough. Gentle night music with the soon to die LCs poetry over a sparce melodic background. You've really gotta be in the right mood for this.
Bloody love this. Where have you been all my life. So Seventies. Also it's sample heaven. GO BONGOS.
Probably peak E@tB. Lovely orchestration. I do think there are some weaker tracks which brings the score down a bit.
I used to be a massive prog fan so making objective calls on albums like this is tricky. I guess this is their 1st proper one, though the next 2 achieved more. It pains me but I think its a 3.
It certainly doesn't have the punch of the debut and sometimes feels like its running out of ideas Ok.
Early French proggy electronica. Split into 6 movements it is uplifting and is a bit of a Scifi soundtrack.
Not going to listen to this as it is ingrained on my soul. It is perfect. Perfectly sequenced brilliant tracks that takes you on a journey. 5
I love this band. They can't do wrong for me. This is lovely (though I prefer the two previous albums) Its kitch and harmonic and French and Retro.
I realise it's culturally important and I like Dylan but a prefer the more electric stuff. Good though.
Funk jazz hybrid. *(More funk than jazz!) Engaging. 1st side better than second.
African blues folk. It's very listenable. Includes Ry Cooder.
I'm a bit obsessed with this. ANd a quick Google on Reddit tells me they have several album just as good as this one. Mind blown as I've never heard of them.
I think I prefer the Soft Bulletin but this is good psych indie fun stuff.
Quite liked the cheery singles back in the 80s but now I just find the trumpets really annoying. Sorry
Jingle jangle. Dylan civer. Jingle jangle. Distinctive sound. Jingle jangle. Bit dull. Jingle jangle....repeat.
Rather likeable. Great voice and some Dyerly Dan feels in the music. Shame it's a compilation but will explore a bit more.
It's just a bit dull (though highly proficient) It didn't turn my head.
Wow this take a genre I don't like (rap-nu-metal) and makes it worse and it spews out for 70 minutes.
It's all very wholesome but her warbles bring on a migraine. Not for me
Guilty pleasure as they say. 4 massive hits on here. Some of the others are a bit wet.
Joyful scuzzy indi. Bit of a joy. Better was to come though.
Pretty much a joy from start to finish. Great production. Classic blues guitar. Loved it.
I was ready to give thus a lambasting but its ok. I guess it tries to go back to a classic era in some ways. Not a patch on Joshua or Achtung but decent.
Meh. Tight, well produced. Bland.
Love the honesty of this band. Nothing contrived. Feels right.
Yay...and he's back on Spotify the miserable old goat. I love the man and this is one of his best. Every track is golden. Straight 5.
French rap?.Actually quite good. I like the jazz based rhythm/beats. Hopefully he's not rapping about Uzis and mf hoes cos that would be a bit negative....Strikes a good vibe 3.5
Workmanlike drumnbass that wears thin after a while.....though I feel the link takes you to the wrong album. And its a compilation....
Pleasant wine bar cool jazz type vibe. Washed over me a bit.
It was ok. Earnest. Sounded like C,S and N off cuts tbh. Also weaker on 2nd half Some murky production..
This one feels a little more mature than the previous 1001 ABBA album but is a bit too nice and tbh sickly. It is bravely beyond pop at times.
Beautiful timeless English folk. Brilliant. 5 star.
Classic proto punk. Dirty ugly and hits the spot. The long slow song is a bit dull.
I don't feel the love at all. Nondescript rnb...with a tight production but meh.
I used to really dislike this band as they seemed to aspire to be U2 type stadium rockstars but a delve into their early and mid period and the quality is really high. Here there is a optimistic assurance in the music that brilliantly holds together. Great 80s rock/pop.
I think this is quite beautiful.
Try as I do, I never really enjoy Sonic Youth. And I tried again. Don't get it. Loud indie guitar rock. Obligatory guitar squeal...
Above average hip hop/rap album. It's a genre a dislike but the production is ace and the jazzy backing is distinctive.
Public Enemy. Angry rap. Predictable beats. Not for me bit I understand its position.
It's the master piece of Yes and probably of prog. I can see how some people will hate it bit its pretty much perfect is its scope ambition and influence.
Mmm...pub rock....you can see where Bon Scott got his shtick from.....minis on point for the tasteless "gangbang" 2
You know it's probably been made in his bedroom and is technically very well done but it bores me to tears and reminds me of the stuff wankers play loudly from their cars in summer.
Bit like a laid back Fun Lovin Crims. Gets a bit tiresome after a while.
Not a genre I really like but there is an honesty to this. The storytelling is good and the music doesn't fall into the tropes of bad country. I bit Dylanny at times.
Well it would be the best Beatles album if you cut it down to a single album...some brilliance (Ussr, Guitar Weepss)and some chaff.(Rocky Raccoon, Bungalow Bill etc) Its gonna be a 4 obviously.
Still the alure of this guy alludes me. Don't get it. Nope. Nada. Dour songs that usually mention pain, whisky, death, despair etc.
Post indie psychedelic....I love the vibe though I think its pretty low on ideas. 3.5 My Girl however echoes though my head like some far-away dream.
Political and poetic. The voice grabs me but musically I find it a bit flat. Sorry.
Think there's a bit of Emperors nee clothes here. Often marked as a key post punk album. The single is good. Most of the rest is poor. You've been conned. (Metal Box is better)
Terrible, terrible music.
Punk glam indie metal?. Seen to say MF a lot. Shock value ? Dont really get it.
It is a masterpiece of Keautrock.
Eels debut puts catchy rock/pop with often despairing sweary lyrics and it does a bit of that Pixies loud quiet thing. Good stuff.
Nreconsyructed overachiever glam metal album with 3 monster songs that rode a wave briefly before the crash. Do I love it? no. Is it a 4. Nah. 3.5
Yeah. Its really lovely. His voice is pure nice. The sings are nice. It's got a gently nice production. Nice. Lovely. Nice. Lovely. Who listens to this? It's all a bit too nice. Nice. 3. Bless.
4th album. I dont know which are on here but the previous 3 are all better than this. Still like it a little though.
Proficient but dull.
Classic and classy 80 synthpop album that doesn't date and holds some delightful tunes.
Never heard a TS album so was prepared to dislike. It's got the National's fingerprints all over it and so it feels familiar. Enjoyable 3.5
There is very little variation on the theme of short, loud and fast. Unimaginative metal. Prob great live if you are there though.
I like MG a lot and this is a quality album but he does tend to plough the same furrow over and over again. I'd class this as troubled soul as he's obviously very sorry about his relationships.
Throwaway sample high DJ album. Like the Judy Tzuke one but then I liked the original. Ok
Quirky bedroom made nonsense that grabbed the music presses attention. Doesn't add up to much. Pass
Psychedelic science fiction jam. The mix is not good. I like the ambition but the SF spoken bits are a bit hokey. File under Sounds better when high
I'm not a fan of many 80s albums but this is something special and otherworldly. I love the angular rhythms and McKenzies voice. Strong.
Ah. The Boos were always my Britpop/Shoegaze band and i loved them though I felt the previous album Everything's Alright Forever was their masterpiece. This however is very good though it may suffer from the usual double album issues. Imaginative pop.
A bit Led Zep, a bit RHCP. It's ok.
A difficult listen. Obviously influenced by Tom Waits. Scuzzy post punk dirty goth blues with Nick Cave throwing all kinds of vocal shapes. Not a fan.
Old laughing Len.... more misery from the poet of pain. The words are art. The delivery is dreary. Some people like this stuff.
Very long but the sings are very short. I groaned when Wiki said they were American punk. It's brilliantly inventive creative and diverse. Take your 4 !
Meh. Cheese. U.S. cheese rock. Meh.
Massively good fun. Is it a great album. Yeah probably.
There's something quite venerable and beguiling about this beautiful piece of American indie. Often sparse, it occasionally takes your breath away with stunning harmonics. Big fan.
Massively satisfying rock n roll track on RS debut. Lot of covers though. Ageless.
Classic Bowie. I think I take it for granted really. It's the glam Dark Side of the Moon. Easy 5
I've always loved Rush. They went a bit popbonnthus one and its a lot of peopes favourite. Strong.
It's a bit of a happy mess.
Pleasant but seems but superficial and irrelevant now. Landfill soul funk pop whatever.
Hard one this. I like the reinvention again it the tracks are often too long and outstanding their welcome. It bombed on release but does have a vision. Mixed bag.
I member buying this on the the strength of "Default". Didn't play it much. It's a bit unnemorable but still engaging The vocals very much remind me of the Beta Band. Decent.
Ah. Metal. Like Rap, you've really got to do something a bit different to stand out. Does do much for me. Tight though. Q mag said. Arise remains their thrash high water mark, sounding like an angry man throwing tools at a urinal while reading the Book of Revelations.
I like some prog and I find this tiresome after a while though you've gotta admire the ambition.
There something about this album that feels so warm. The songs feel like friends without knowing them. Magical.
I think I bloody love this and need to explore Bill and Smog more. Total love. 4
Firstly it does work as a coherent double album. Secondly the 80s production really sucks (especially the synth sound) Not a fan of this one.
Yikes more 80s. Wow there is a lot of courts and filler on an album with 3 number 1s. Half baked. Massive input by Trevor Horn
I like this but it is just missing some decent hooks which were rich in the De La Soul debut.
TBHh this is outrageously good fun. Considering their shtick is pretty they do what they do really well and it never seems boring. Souther boogie brilliance. I feel generous. 4.
It's very 80s and I think with other artists I would complain about the production with similar artists but this seems to work. There is some filler in the middle, but is feels special at times.
Starts on a high. Then drops. Not sure it's aged well but I remember it being pretty radical at the time.
Mmm. Loved the EPs, loved the 1st album quite liked the second . This one's ok.
Warm gorgeous songs of love.
Wonderful alt country indie with echoes of Wilco. Pretty fabulous and the band is completely new to me. Nice
A band I feel I should love but leave me a bit cold. This though I feel is the best. And I'd probably calk Expressway as my fave SY track of all
Overproduced decent pop album. By this time I find his vocal tics/clichés a bit annoying. Som filled bit plenty of hits. Not got me.
Apex of early Radiohead. Strong if overfamiliar.
God he's a bit of a bore. Liked the Smiths but his solo albums are just massive vanity affairs. (Your Arsenal is probably better.) Finished it though.
I dont nk this or the previous album match the impact, innocence or tunes of the debut which I much love. Its decent but seems a poorer re-hash. Sorry.
Unremarkable punk/rock with a rocknroll slant. Prob better live
Landmark early electronica.
Once a culture darling/favourite. She rubs people up the wrong way but her musuc is different and interesting.
A hypnotic beautiful album of sensuality and guile..
Not on Spot. Not really on YT either. Heard bits. Cuban rap funk thing. Sounds messy. Why this?
Historically significant for some reason! Heavy psychedelia. Side A is dull. And the lead title track is just a jam with a drum solo.
Loose and ragged dirty pub rock'n'roll. Stay with me is 5 star but the rest doesn't hold up
God I dread C&W albums. This is no better no worse. At least it's short.shirt. 2
Above average WuTang related rap album with the Kung fu samples.
Mmm usual gangsta rap with usual tiresome tropes. Good delivery. Lots of annoying skits. Decent production.
Spotify only seems to have 5 tracks of this album so I'm basing it on that. I thought it was going to be terrible but in the end it was ok. They are something more than a hair metal band. Definitely glam.
Above average punk driven songs about love and desire. Pete Shelleys vocals are a bit Marmite. Very tight guitars. I like
Rough and ready raw debut Maiden.
It's a bit like a countryfied Low. Twangy slow core and quite decent.
Engaging dark and sometimes gothic kitch soundtrack stuff. Hard to categorize tbh. It is good though.
It's a bit boring tbh. The songs don't merit going on on for so long. Also where is the bass?
I know this is someone you are supposed to like but I find his voice annoying and the jazz leanings a bit twee.. not for me. Interesting guest line up
Well crafted underrated indie. Such a move on from the notorious debut. Greater than tbe sum of its parts. Brilliant hooks.
Ok I'm not a Zappa fan and I think this is historically significant but what an absolute mind fuck thus would have been in 1966. I think that it is an epic chunk of avant-rock. Take your 4.
Well this is way better than the Me-Talica album I just had. Is does something a bit more interesting. Yeah it's a bit shouty but has some really interesting moments.
Yeah it's a Elton/Beegees/Disco pastiche but it's bloody gorgeous/sexy/hit laden.
I like prog but this is pretentious rubbish. Brain Salad Surgery would have been a better submission.
Don't know what the original was like but the recent directors cut sounds v dated. Not impressed. You had to be there I guess.
I really want to like and appreciate this but it kinda washes over me without leaving an impact. She's not Kate Bush. /s
Not sure what yo think about this.. its cross genre part folk/country/psych/rock. It's v pleasant but doesn't tmrock my world . Solid 3
Metallica spin off. Interesting at times. Goes on a bit
Ageless beautiful electonica.
Early Beatles album. Slightly lame at times.
Ummm. Part AC/DC part Stones. It's done well but so derivative.
Sparse beautiful songs about joy and despair.
A sludgy mess of styles and a double at that. I was weary after the 5th track. Its Stills so musically very competent....but meh
I appreciate the troubled history and I remember critics wetting themselves but it just has a giddy moronic happiness that wears after a while. That's possibly too harsh but so what...
Alt punk country. It's ok.
Wow this polarize people in their reviews. Brilliant quirky indie.
Nirvana influenced indie rock that was massively overhyped by the Btitish music press. Ok.
Majestic Ealy trip hop though their peak (Mezzanine) is strangly absent from here. Cool funky and dark
Above average rap. Some predictable tropes. Nice production.
Quirky but rather brilliant at times.
I really want to like XTC and the production and lyrics are great but it does come across a bit twee.
Cheesy country rock. Really Really not my thing. However he hates Trump and has been married 7 times. Not sure that is important but have a ***
Early experimental. Really interesting but im unlikely to replay. Have a *** for your spunk.
Absolute bullshit from Weller here. Who the fuck did he think he was. Jesus
I'm a bit taken aback by just how good this is. The songwriting is off the scale. His voice can be a bit abrasive. It's a strong 4.5
Interesting German American protopunk.
Ah. The cult of Kurt. More pished than the debut but I think not as good as the final. Still its a magnificent mix of radio friendly and hardcore. Solid 4
Wow pervo psycho rap. Can be quite tasteless. Not for me. Out to shock. 2
Recorded/released 2 decades after the peerless Loveless. Some of the tracks seem to be a homage of that album though there are some more interesting tracks near the end. Seems worthy but also irrelevant.
Funky sample filled cod indie from cartoon funsters. My kids loved it. It doesn't sound as radical as it did on release. The following 2 albums are better.
Landfill indie. Sorry lads.
Its talen me a lot of my life to appreciate peak Talking Heads It's all about the rhythms. Great stuff. 4
I may be getting to like SY after so many years. Still can't tell the albums apart though. Decent songs
Sparse beautiful songs of love and loss. Vulnerable voices in economic songs. Better at night but mighty
Early 70s baroque pop that doesn't really pull be in though I admire it's ambition.
Surprisingly strong. Electo/SF grooves. Very little filler. Way ahead of the game.
I'm ofter quite snotty about the repeated tropes of metal and rap but this is just astonishing. . Take your 4 you big beautiful beast of terror.
It's no "Pill Thrills" but you can see the origins of that success. The tunes are not that memorable.
Another one of those classic country artists reborn in late career rebirth albums. Voice/production is good. Just a bit dull.
Massivly beautiful dream pop.
It's not bad. 2 decent singles. Some good album tracks. He is an arsehole though.
I've never got Spiritualized. I should but it's all so overwrought with angst and emotion that i find it difficult to like. This album is lighter but there are only so many songs about broken hearts I can cope with.
Don't want to sound mean but this is just a hip Simply Red isn't it. Lounge coffee table music.
It's fine. I do feel there are too many Byrds albums on the list.....and I can't remember rhe other ones
Ummm. Making Movies and Love over Gold are way better..poor choice....Knopflers guitar licks are gorgeous but the songs are a bit half baked.
Brutal, bleak and probably essential.
May be one of those that requires repeated listens but it kinda washed over me without leaving an impression. Good production though.
Classic stuff from his golden period.
After listening to the wrong one on Spotify I listed to the superior version on YouTube. Its a lovely experience and will revisit
Twee gentle Scottish Donovan inspired inoffensive samey cardigan wearing filkie rock. Hard to dislike. Difficult to love.
OK here it is.... the behemoth of great albums. It is of course very heavily flawed. Good Morning and Mr Kite are nonsense. Ringos song is naff and that sitar thing at the start of side 2 is a big mistake. Having said that it is revolutionary and epic. Easy 4.
It's a bit of a glorious double album mess but it delivers dirty rock and roll in an epic way
Masterful jazz that I was totally unaware of. Sumptuous stuff.
Punky Irish folk with attitude and edge.
Unsurprisingly this is very Can. Bits that's a good thing. It's a bit uneven but requires repeated listens. Quirky enjoyable stuff.
Dreary dirges done in a Lenny Coen stylee. Just too much.
I don't really get this crooner thing. It does nothing for me. A bit French in a way.
British indie 60s psychadelia throwback. It's fine but unremarkable
Stoner indie. Not as drawn out and tedious as his Spiritualized stuff but still a bit of a dull drone
The iconic punk album. 4 big hits and some filler.
Amazing voice, fab production. It's all just a bit overwhelming in drama and emotion.
I prefer Live Through This. Nothing matches Doll Parts. It's a tad too over produced and that kinda goes against the skuzzy ethic of the band. Ok FM rock though.
Nice voice. It is really boring. Dull country tropes. Next.
Interesting dark gothy album with great vocals from Bunnymac. The problem is that the first 2 tracks are by far the strongest so after that just seems an anticclimax.
They got better but white boy rap produces an effective memorable rap album. Kick it!
Moody influential early post rock. Feels somewhere between King Crimson, Tool and Nick Cave. Memorable and haunting.
Lo fi beautiful acoustic folk with stunning guitar. Echoes of Nick Drake.
I may have turned a corner. I found myself driving to work actually liking some of this. In the past TW has just sounded like a man barking at the moon. I think I get it.
Strong PG album. His voice is cold but the production/rhythms make this very relistenable.
Amazing stuff.
It's fine but nowhere as good as when they started using rhythms with Eno.
Decent US power pop indie from a band u know little about.
Mmm decent though t it also very much a Daniel Lanois album. His production is special and it warps BDs voice. Too long though.
Interesting choice. Bit world music. Bit of ravey bliss. Bass heavy of course. Some 80s tropes. (God there are some bad synth trumpets) Refreshing.
Great 70 funk. Loved it.
Manchester bonkers funk rock with that Ryder vocal. It still find it disorienting.
I'm a bit drunk but there's something quite spiritual (and autumnal) about this album. It entrances me me like Bon Iver and Mudlakes Occupanther.
I don't feel the love. Vedder doesn't do it for me like Cornell or Cobain. The rock guitar is fine. Hive me Nirvana
Shouty US punk. Not many memorable tunes but I guess that's not the point...
Strange imaginative psychedelia that leaves a lasting image.
A bit like Can but possibly more experimental. Interesting at times.
You can just list listen to an "average" track on this and it just slays everything you've listened to in the previous week. Joyous.
Thought thiscwas a bit tiresome initially but then I kinda give in the lonesome groove. Probably needs a few listens.
It sounds amazing. Trouble is the big band technique makes so many songs sound similar. It needed mixing up a bit. Great though.
Just odd. Tom Waits feels...(but way before.....bit rootsy, by psychedelia. Will play again.....
Classic era DB. first after Ziggy and this one is def "glam rock". Slightly messy production but it is still v good.
Beautiful bittersweet acoustic songs that I find a bit too sad.
Irish pop punk with decent tunes and tight playing.
I'm no fan but I can admire the sheer ferociousness of the thing. Landmark metal.
Stong debut agit-fem rock from PJH.
Patchy psychedelia rhat hasn't aged well. Big drop off in quality on second side..
The Nirvana/Pixies tribute band you never asked for. tbh. Some of the songs are too long too.
Bit of a pop/country crossover but interesting enough.
Interesting early psychedelic concept album with some interesting sonic experiments. Decent.
This would be easy to dismiss as meh guitar pop but it way better rgab that. Songwriting, production and invention are pretty outstanding. Take a 4 you gorgeous bastard.
Yeah the guitar is great. BUT. It is over produced poodle permed cock rock with some lazy filling. Good but not great.
This one has dated badly. Too much drugs and lazy beats.
Quality akt-country Americana. Brilliant voice.
Strange post rock album that lacks some heft
Rockabilly 90s US punk. Probably great live.
Well this is a bit different. Beautiful at time but it did ultimately become background music.
I bloody love SD and this debut is great though far from the best. Strong
Never heard this band. I have no idea what to think about it. It's a mixture of soft indie and various bits of world music.
Just lovely. Classic soul
Never Loved Queen. Hate the vocal overdubs. Dislike Mays guitar tone. Means nothing to me.
Rather uninteresting electronica.
Yay we've moved on from that weird shit 80s N Young and found the garage grungy stuff. Fuck yeah! Lovely stuff
RA debut impressed Elton appaz. No so much I. Singer songwriter alt country Americana. Nothing stands out. Also he's a bit of a dick.
Ok. It's intense and theatrical and ambitious but I just don't enjoy it. Sorry.
He's a bit shit. Don't understand the inclusion. Cereal Milky.
Yeah. Some intelligent rap. Ace rhythms. No cussing or misogyny. It's a bit like early Kanye but smoother. Highly recommended.
Really annoying vocal style. Does she have to hold notes lite that every time.. She rips the souls out of the songs. Expensive sounding production. A struggle to get though. Not good.
A landmark prog album. There's nothing really like it. God I love the drumming. All amazing except the 10 mins of pointless noodling on side 2. It's a 5 otherwise.
It's not the best but still great. A couple of classics and some dirty rhythm n blues.
Tom gets out his pots and pans and barks at the moon. (I know it gets worse) Its quaint at times ('Neighbourhood") but on the whole it's not a great listen (for me)
Fun shoegaze indie pop.
Doesn't feel as urgent as Black Planet or Nation of Millions. But still good.
Never heard of this band. Kinda like a sleepy Low, Wilco Americana. Decent. May explore more.
Culturally significant politically and as early funk but tbh I find it washes over me a bit.
Starts off well but soon descends into a shambling mess. As did his life.
I don't care about the singles. I really can't abide 80s hair metal. Thar voice, those lyrics and that production massively suck. Shite
Inane blues rock that aspires to be Mick n Keef but just end up being a bit shite. Bored.
Wow. Thought I was going to hate this as ' Industrial Metal" does not appeal to me. However after after 2 days of hair/cock rock this was quite refreshing. Impressive. Have a 4
It's kinda a morose Wu-Tang album. Very enjoyable.
Think this more enjoyable than other EC albums I've heard but I find it hard to get past his voice which kinda grates on me.
An unusual choice I think. By now her voice has largely gone and you can hear it. One of her last albums. Sounds glorious at times
Debut album of covers. Sounds great but I never loved him.
It's live, it's a double album which covers some of thd highlights of his career. I must admit I was skipping through some tracks. Decent
Big beat debut the Chems. Think I prefer the second album but it's engaging stuff.
Ok. Never loved Elvis. However the production on this one is just lush. Have a 4 you old devil.
Even though I wouldn't listen to this on a day to day basis it nothing but magnificent.
I like the guy but there's something a bit plastic and cheesy about it which really turns me off.
Prog heaven really. Big fan.
First album where the Fab 4 start to get interesting. It is flawed (see tbe last song) but pop wise rather it's rather epic.
What an absolutely gorgeous album. In love with it after one spin. Will explore more of thus guy.
